In situ radiographic analysis of the maxillary canines ofMacaca fuscata was conducted on 88 specimens in 44 individuals (23 dry skulls and 21 live animals) in order to examine the number of roots. The left canines were then extracted from ten female skulls for measurement, further radiographic examination, and visual morphological observation. The results showed a clear sexual dimorphism in root morphology: all male canines were clearly distinguished as single-rooted from the radiograph, whereas more than 40% of the female canines were double-rooted. Variation was also found among the single-rooted female canines, in that some of these teeth appeared to have a bifurcated canal. This sexual dimorphism in the number of maxillary canine roots and the individual variation found among the females in root and canal morphology are previously unreported for this species. No observations were attempted on mandibular canines, however, because of the incomplete nature of the sample.  相似文献

Summary The relationship between odontoblasts and pulp capillaries in the process of dentinogenesis was studied in rat lower incisors, both on the labial and lingual sides, using light and transmission electron microscopy. The odontoblasts showed remarkable differences from the apical to the incisal end. Near the apical end of the tooth, immature odontoblasts, which were thought to be involved in the formation of the mantle dentin, were arranged in a single layer, and continuous capillaries were located just beneath the odontoblasts. In the middle of the tooth, mature odontoblasts with highly developed cell organelles and notable processes formed a pseudostratified layer; fenestrated capillaries were found between these cells close to the predentin. The height of the odontoblast layer and the rate of dentin deposition on the labial (enamel-related) side was significantly greater than that on the lingual (cementum-related) side. Near the incisal end, cementum-related odontoblasts gradually decreased in height and number to become post-odontoblasts that produced atubular dentin; continuous capillaries were located subjacent to the post-odontoblasts. On the labial (enamel-related) side, however, odontoblasts retained their pseudostratification; fenestrated capillaries were still observed in the odontoblast layer. No atubular dentin was formed on the labial side.  相似文献

A fluidized-bed biofilm reactor using activated carbon particles of 1.69 mm diameter as the support for biomass growth and molasses as the carbon source is used for wastewater denitrification.The start-up of the reactor was successfully achieved in 1 week by using a liquor from garden soil leaching as the inoculum and a superficial velocity u(0) = 5u(mf). Typical biofilm thickness is 800 mum; therefore covered activated carbon particles have 3.3 mm in diameter.Reactor hydrodynamics was studied by tracer (KCl solution) experiments. The analysis based on residence time distribution theory involved a model with axial dispersion flow and tracer diffusion with linear adsorption inside the biofilm. Peclet numbers higher than 100 were found, allowing the plug flow assumption for the reactor model.Experimental profiles of nitrate and nitrite species were explained by a kinetic model of two consecutive zero-order reactions coupled with substrate diffusion inside the biofilm. Under the operating conditons used thick biofilms were obtained working in a diffusion-controlled regime.Comparison is made with results obtained in the same reactor with sand particles as the support for biomass growth. Activated carbon as the support has the following advantages: good adsorptive characteristics, homogeneous biofilm thickness along the reactor, and easy restart-up of the reactor. An experimental reactor consisting of two chambers, separated by a porous ceramic immobilization matrix, was constructed to measure the effective diffusivity of different compounds and the consumption rates of acetate in developing biofilms. In initial experiments, effective diffusivities for acetate, propionate, isopropanol, and lithium salt through the ceramic immobilization matrix in the absence of biofilm were determined to be 40% to 50% less than in water at infinite dilution. The effective diffusivity of the lithium salt was similar to that of acetate. The effective diffusivity of the lithium salt through biofilms of thickness in the range of 200 to 1200 mum was essentially constant with a value of approximately 7% of that in water at infinite dilution. Acetate consumption in the biofilm was linearly proportional to biofilm thickness up to a biofilm depth of 800 mum. Deviation from linearity appeared in biofilm thicknesses greater than 800 mum. Results of these experiments support previous reports that immobilized cell reactors have significantly higher bioconversion rates than suspended cell systems.  相似文献

The question of nonthymus-derived lymphocyte-mediated cytotoxicity was investigated with T and B cell subpopulations separated from the blood of normal donors. Mononuclear cells, T cells (E-RFC), and cell preparations enriched for B cells (non-E-RFC) by depletion of E-RFC gave negligible cytotoxic responses when incubated with either human melanoma or lung fibroblast target cells. In contrast, EAC and ZC rosetting cells separated from this same B-rich population consistently gave cytotoxic responses which were not dependent on either antibody or phagocytic cells. The cytotoxic effector cells appeared to be nonthymus-derived lymphocytes as characterized by C3 receptor rosetting and presence of surface membrane immunoglobulin on the majority of cells. In addition, supernatants from EAC-RFC cultures contained lymphotoxin (LT) activities which were eightfold higher than those of control E-RFC cultures. These findings suggest the existence of a nonthymus-derived cell cytotoxic effector mechanism, induced by the binding of membrane C3 receptors, which is independent of antibody.  相似文献

Observations on the sequence and timing of gingival tooth eruption are reported for six species of Madagascar lemurs. Complete sequences of eruption were obtained for the deciduous dentition, and partial to complete sequences were recorded for the permanent dentition. In Cheirogaleus medius and in four species of the genus Lemur, the deciduous teeth erupt in front-to-back sequence, with the toothcomb emerging near birth as an integrated complex. In Propithecus verreauxi the same pattern is exhibited, but the small peglike lower canine and dp3 erupt last. Eruption of the permanent dentition in Lemur species takes place in two distinct stages. In the first stage the upper incisors, toothcomb, and first two molars penetrate the gingiva. After an interval of 3 to 4 months, the remaining permanent teeth erupt. Deciduous premolars erupt when young animals are being weaned. The eruption of the deciduous toothcomb appears unrelated to feeding or grooming behavior. In L. catta and L. fulvus, the first stage of permanent tooth eruption occurs at approximately 6 months of age, when the growth rate slows down and (in wild populations) the rainy season is ending. This suggests that eruption of the anterior molars is timed to coincide with a shift from a more frugivorous to a more folivorous dietary regime, which occurs during the dry season. No further tooth eruption occurs until approximately 1 year of age, when the growth rate increases and the rainy season returns for wild populations. Thus, the second wave of permanent tooth eruption in these species again appears linked to changing climatic conditions which lead to a shift in dietary preferences.  相似文献

The types of mouse parthenogenones obtained in a medium modified with respect to Ca2+ and/or Mg2+ ions were investigated in “spontaneously” activating eggs after culturing cumulus masses in vitro for 5 hr. The second meiotic division was affected in eggs cultured in medium lacking Ca2+ and Mg2+ or Ca2+ alone, resulting in suppression of second polar body extrusion in a high proportion of cases, giving rise to two pronuclear eggs or eggs that underwent immediate cleavage. Extrusion of the second polar body occurred normally when the cumulus mass was cultured in complete medium and, in a high proportion of eggs, when Mg2+ alone was lacking in the medium. The results are discussed with reference to the second meiotic division. The method provides an efficient way for obtaining a large number of different types of parthenogenetic embryos.  相似文献

Four skeletal series (Corinth, Greece; Gran Quivira, New Mexico; Semna South, Sudanese Nubia, and a large group from scattered sites in England) were coded for sex, jaw, tooth group, dental attrition, dental caries, site and time period. Through thec concepts of a basal level of caries and a cariosity gradient, a single model was found which best described the occurrence of this disease in these samples. All factors were found to contribute significantly to the model. Within the possible subsamples the general characteristics are that the profiles of males, of the mandibulae and of those with light attrition are more likely to have lower overall dental caries levels and to be relatively more carious in the back of the mouth than the front when compared to the pooled sample of all teeth and caries. The opposite is also found to be generally true; the teeth of females, maxillae and heavy attrition are associated with more caries, especially toward the front of the mouth. These results imply that samples appearing otherwise homogeneous display much variation. They also reveal distinct regularities in the reactions of diverse human groups to dental caries.  相似文献

The level of molar wear can be estimated reliably by measuring the cusp height. A correlation between age and the level of molar wear, expressed by a normalizing index (TWI) of cusp height, was found to exist in a sample of modern Igloolik Northwest Territories Eskimos. Not only was it possible to derive linear regression models to test the degree of correlation in the sample of 46 female and 39 male maxillary casts of Igloolik Eskimos, but the models were capable of accurately predicting the age of natives of the neighboring Hall Beach community. Sexual dimorphism in molar wear, perhaps attributable to differential bruxism, was demonstrated for the Igloolik sample. Based on the combined estimate of slopes for each maxillary molar pair for females and males, it was discovered that the male maxillary molars are worn approximately 30% more rapidly than female maxillary molars.  相似文献

AIMS: Bacteria are important residents of water systems, including those of space stations which feature specific environmental conditions, such as lowered effects of gravity. The purpose of this study was to compare responses with modelled reduced gravity of space station, water system bacterial isolates with other isolates of the same species. METHODS AND RESULTS: Bacterial isolates, Stenotrophomonas paucimobilis and Acinetobacter radioresistens, originally recovered from the water supply aboard the International Space Station (ISS) were grown in nutrient broth under modelled reduced gravity. Their growth was compared with type strains S. paucimobilis ATCC 10829 and A. radioresistens ATCC 49000. Acinetobacter radioresistens ATCC 49000 and the two ISS isolates showed similar growth profiles under modelled reduced gravity compared with normal gravity, whereas S. paucimobilis ATCC 10829 was negatively affected by modelled reduced gravity. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that microgravity might have selected for bacteria that were able to thrive under this unusual condition. These responses, coupled with impacts of other features (such as radiation resistance and ability to persist under very oligotrophic conditions), may contribute to the success of these water system bacteria. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Water quality is a significant factor in many environments including the ISS. Efforts to remove microbial contaminants are likely to be complicated by the features of these bacteria which allow them to persist under the extreme conditions of the systems.  相似文献
