External morphology of spicules in several species of Trichodoridae was studied by scanning electron and light microscopy. The bristles on the spicules observed in the light microscope in several species were revealed as small scales forming a sheath which covers most of the spicule body. Some species have smooth spicules, whereas other species exhibited complicated structures formed by projections. In all of the species studied, either a ventro-terminal or terminal opening of the spicules was observed.  相似文献

Abstract

Three marine sponges Neopetrosia similis, Xestospongia testudinaria and Petrosia nigricans from the Gulf of Mannar, Southeast coast of India were compared based on their morphometric parameters and their biochemical and elemental composition. These sponges showed differences inspicule : protein (spongin) ratio of 5:1, 11:1 and 13:1, respectively. Xestospongia testudinaria possessed the longest oxeae, 3.05 times than P. nigricans and 1.47 times than N. similis. Spectral analysis revealed that the spicules of these sponges are mostly composed of O (>50%) and Si (29–45%), whereas Al and Ca (4–5%) were additionally detected only in the spicules of P. nigricans. In contrast, the percentage elemental composition in pinacodermal sections was significantly different as O and Si were the maximum (23–50%); followed by Cl and Al as moderate (1–17%); and Na, S, Fe and Ca in minor quantities (0.2–6%). Cluster analysis and traditional taxonomic arrangements show that X. testudinaria and N. similis have a close relationship whereas P. nigricans was hypothesized to be their sister group. The present findings could be the key for identifying sponges in situ as well as determining whether sponges could be used to assess pollution in the sea.  相似文献

The megasters of T. aurantium and T. citrina consist, in their mature stage, of spherasters and spheroxyasters respectively. A study of the ratio between the ray length and the diameter of the centre (R/C), which determines the megaster shape, has been carried out on spicules of different size.
While the small megasters of these two species have a similar shape, successive stages show in T. aurantium an isometric growth and in T. citrina an allometric growth with rays growing faster than the centre. The two species differ also in the mean size, size frequency distribution and number of rays of the asters. Differences in the mean total diameter and shape were also detected among spicules coming from different regions of the sponge body. The taxonomic and evolutionary meaning of these phenomena are discussed.  相似文献

The lengths and widths of at least 100 spicules from each of 126 specimens, comprising at least 12 species of haplosclerid sponges, mainly from Church Island and Rhosneigr, Anglesey, North Wales have been measured. It was found that spicule dimensions by themselves would be unreliable in the identification of species. The sample means, medians and maxima, when plotted using width and length axes, form specific clusters that overlap, sometimes to a considerable extent. The correlation coefficients for width against length varied widely, even when single species were considered. The variation arises from differences in the numbers of juvenile spicules in various samples. The best correlation coefficients exceeded 0.8 and the regression constants for linear correlation in such samples could be useful in the diagnosis and taxonomy of the species. The coefficients of variation for length and width also yielded parameters for species characterization. In general the coefficient for length tended to increase as the mean length increased, whereas that for width tended to decrease with increasing mean width. Some species stood apart from the general trends, however. The coefficients varied widely from one sample to another of the same species, identified using a variety of diagnostic features. To some extent the variation was linked with the date of collection. When all the data were combined, the average coefficient for width decreased markedly in May. The same was true for two species that were separately considered. The decrease was not simply caused by a change in mean width, changes in standard deviation also being involved. There was a tendency for certain species, in particular Reniera rosea and Gellius angulatus , to produce thin spicules in the spring, which became incorporated distally in the primary spicule bundles in July-August.  相似文献

Abstract: The palaeoloricate ‘polyplacophorans’ are an extinct paraphyletic group of basal chiton‐like organisms known primarily from their fossilized valves. Their phylogenetic placement remains contentious, but they are likely to include both stem‐group Polyplacophora and stem‐group Aplacophora. Candidates for the latter position include ‘Helminthochitonthraivensis from the Ordovician of Scotland, which we redescribe here through a combined optical and micro‐CT (XMT) restudy of the type material. The 11 specimens in the type series are all articulated, presenting partial or complete valve series as well as mouldic preservation of the girdle armature; they demonstrate a vermiform body plan. The valves are typically palaeoloricate in aspect, but differ in detail from all existing palaeoloricate genera; we hence erect Phthipodochiton gen. nov. to contain the species. The most notable feature of the fossils is the spicular girdle; this is impersistently preserved, but demonstrably wraps entirely around the ventral surface of the animal, implying that a ‘true’ (i.e. polyplacophoran like) foot was absent, although we do not exclude the possibility of a narrow solenogastre‐like median pedal groove having been present. Phthipodochiton thraivensis presents an apparent mosaic of aplacophoran and polyplacophoran features and as such will inform our understanding of the relationship between these groups of extant molluscs. An inference may also be drawn that at least some other palaeoloricates possessed an ‘armoured aplacophoran’ body plan, in contrast to the ‘limpet‐like’ body plan of extant Polyplacophora.  相似文献
