The selfish DNA hypothesis predicts that natural selection is responsible for preventing the unregulated build up of transposable
elements in organismal genomes. Accordingly, between-species differences in the strength and effectiveness of selection against
transposons should be important in driving the evolution of transposon activity and abundance. We used a modeling approach
to investigate how the rate of self-fertilization influences the population dynamics of transposable elements. Contrasting
effects of the breeding system were observed under selection based on transposon disruption of gene function versus selection
based on element-mediated ectopic exchange. This suggests that the comparison of TE copy number in organisms with different
breeding systems may provide a test of the relative importance of these forces in regulating transposon multiplication. The
effects of breeding system also interacted with population size, particularly when there was no element excision. The strength
and effectiveness of selection against transposons was reflected not only in their equilibrium abundance, but also in the
per-site element frequency of individual insertions and the coefficient of variation in copy number. These results are discussed
in relation to evidence on transposon abundance available from the literature, and suggestions for future data collection.
With their immense variety of breeding systems, plants will be extremely important for comparative studies and for sorting
out the forces influencing...variation.

We studied in the rat the effects of the drug etretinate (Tigason), given at three doses 3, 10, and 30 mg/kg body wt for 1 mo, on the concentrations of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, S, P, Cu, and Zn in the plasma, brain, thymus, heart, liver, lung, kidney, testicle, muscle, and bone. The elements were simultaneously determined in tissues after nitric acid dissolution by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry using a JY 48 instrument. At the dose of 3 mg/kg, etretinate did not induce any statistically significant modifications of the element distribution. At the dose of 10 mg/kg, the main observed modifications were in plasma an increase of copper (+38%) and a decrease of zinc (-25%). At the highest dose of 30 mg/kg, some variations of the concentrations of elements in tissues were observed. But, on no account did retinoids induce an alteration of the mineral composition of bone, despite obvious macroscopic bone alterations. 相似文献
For the past years, different therapies based on steroid hormone supplementation or modulators of estrogen receptors have
been used after menopause to prevent or manage osteoporosis. Although these treatments seem to be beneficial, they have some
negative effects in the uterus and breast. The objective of this study was to assess variations for the concentrations of
K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Se in uterine tissue of Wistar rats. Ovriectomized rats were subjected to estrogen, progesterone,
raloxifene, and tibolone supplementation and compared with nonovariectomized control animals. Elemental contents determined
by the particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique revealed major alterations in Fe, Ca, Mn, and Se in the uterus of
ovariectomized rats relative to control animals. After ovariectomy, a significant increase in Ca and Fe and a significant
decrease in Mn and Se contents were determined in the uterus. For the ovariectomized groups in which animals, received raloxifene,
tibolone, estrogen, and estrogen combined with progesterone supplementation, an overall recovery in Mn, Fe, and Se contents
was verified. Elemental concentration in the progesterone-supplemented group did not significantly differ from ovariectomized
animals receiving placebo. The alterations found for ovariectomized animals receiving placebo and progesterone suggest tissue
impairment and trace element imbalance, contrasting with the remaining supplemented groups where an enhancement of tissue
activity might justify similar concentration levels relative to controls, because most of the elemental contents altered after
ovariectomy. 相似文献
This study is aimed to investigate the transfer of potentially toxic trace elements from soils to plants grown under the impact of Alaverdi's mining complex and assess the related dietary exposure to local residents. Contamination levels of potentially toxic trace elements (Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Hg, As, Cd) in soils and plants were determined and afterwards, transfer factors, estimated daily intakes, target hazard quotients, and hazard indexes were calculated.
Some trace elements (Pb, Zn, Cd) exceeded the maximum allowable levels. EDIs of Cu, Ni, Hg for the majority of studied fruits and vegetables exceeded the health-based guideline values. Meanwhile, in case of combined consumption of the studied food items, the estimated cumulative daily intakes exceeded health-based guideline values not only for the aforementioned trace elements but also for Zn in the following sequence: Zn > Hg > Ni > Cu. HI > 1 values highlighted the potential adverse health effects for local population through more than one trace element.
Detailed investigations need to be done for the overall assessment of health risks, taking into consideration not only adverse health effects posed by more than one toxic trace element but also through other exposure pathways. 相似文献
X-chromosome inactivation (XCI) was first suggested as an explanation for the variegated phenotypes in mice heterozygous for X-linked colour genes or for X-autosome translocations involving autosomal coat colour genes. The effects seen in X-autosome translocations led to the suggestion of an X-inactivation centre (Xic) from which the inactivation was initiated, and this suggestion has led to major advances in understanding. Another feature of X-autosome translocations is incomplete inactivation of the attached autosomal segment, implying that the X-chromosome is enriched in features favouring inactivation. Interspersed repeat elements, and in particular long interspersed elements (LINEs), have been suggested as the relevant enriching features. Recent evidence concerning this hypothesis is discussed. 相似文献
