Climate warming has been shown to affect the timing of the onset of breeding of many bird species across the world. However, for multi‐brooded species, climate may also affect the timing of the end of the breeding season, and hence also its duration, and these effects may have consequences for fitness. We used 28 years of field data to investigate the links between climate, timing of breeding, and breeding success in a cooperatively breeding passerine, the superb fairy‐wren (Malurus cyaneus). This multi‐brooded species from southeastern Australia has a long breeding season and high variation in phenology between individuals. By applying a “sliding window” approach, we found that higher minimum temperatures in early spring resulted in an earlier start and a longer duration of breeding, whereas less rainfall and more heatwaves (days > 29°C) in late summer resulted in an earlier end and a shorter duration of breeding. Using a hurdle model analysis, we found that earlier start dates did not predict whether or not females produced any young in a season. However, for successful females who produced at least one young, earlier start dates were associated with higher numbers of young produced in a season. Earlier end dates were associated with a higher probability of producing at least one young, presumably because unsuccessful females kept trying when others had ceased. Despite larger scale trends in climate, climate variables in the windows relevant to this species’ phenology did not change across years, and there were no temporal trends in phenology during our study period. Our results illustrate a scenario in which higher temperatures advanced both start and end dates of individuals’ breeding seasons, but did not generate an overall temporal shift in breeding times. They also suggest that the complexity of selection pressures on breeding phenology in multi‐brooded species may have been underestimated.  相似文献

We quantified rates of soil respiration among sites within an agricultural landscape in central Iowa, USA. The study was conducted in riparian cool-season grass buffers, in re-established multispecies (switchgrass + poplar) riparian buffers and in adjacent crop (maize and soybean) fields. The objectives were to determine the variability in soil respiration among buffer types and crop fields within a riparian landscape, and to identify those factors correlating with the observed differences. Soil respiration was measured approximately monthly over a two-year period using the soda-lime technique. Mean daily soil respiration across all treatments ranged from 0.14 to 8.3 g C m–2 d–1. There were no significant differences between cool-season grass buffers and re-established forest buffers, but respiration rates beneath switchgrass were significantly lower than those beneath cool-season grass. Soil respiration was significantly greater in both buffer systems than in the cropped fields. Seasonal changes in soil respiration were strongly related to temperature changes. Over all sites, soil temperature and soil moisture together accounted for 69% of the seasonal variability in soil respiration. Annual soil respiration rates correlated strongly with soil organic carbon (R = 0.75, P < 0.001) and fine root (<2 mm) biomass (R = 0.85, P < 0.001). Annual soil respiration rates averaged 1140 g C m–2 for poplar, 1185 g C m–2 for cool-season grass, 1020 g C m–2 for switchgrass, 750 g C m–2 for soybean and 740 g C m–2 for corn. Overall, vegetated buffers had significantly higher soil respiration rates than did adjacent crop fields, indicating greater soil biological activity within the buffers.  相似文献

The effects of eight different sodium salts on the activation of spores of Bacillus stearothermophilus NGB101 at 30°C were examined. Sodium nitrite was a potent activator spores of NGB101. Complete activation of spore populations was obtained after 6 h or less at 30°C. Activation of spores of NGB101 in solutions of sodium nitrite, like activation in distilled water, was temperature dependent, with optimal activation at 30°C. While a potent activator of spores of NGB101 at 30°C, sodium nitrite was ineffective as an initiator of germination at 65°C. Activation of spores of NGB101 produced marked increases in colony forming spores compared with nonactivated populations. Spore populations activated in solutions of sodium nitrite gave higher plate counts compared with spores activated in distilled water.  相似文献

Ecotones mark zones of rapid change in ecological structure at various spatial scales. They are believed to be particularly susceptible to shifts caused by environmental transformation, making them key regions for studying the effects of global change. Here, we explored the variation in assemblage structure of aquatic primary producer and consumer communities across latitudinal transects in northeastern North America (Québec‐Labrador) to identify spatial patterns in biodiversity that indicated the location of transition zones across the landscape. We analyzed species richness and the cumulative rate of compositional change (expressed as beta‐diversity) of diatoms and chironomids to detect any abrupt shifts in the rate of spatial taxonomic turnover. We used principal coordinates analysis to estimate community turnover with latitude, then applied piecewise linear regression to assess the position of ecotones. Statistically significant changes in assemblage composition occurred at 52 and 55°N, corresponding to the transition between closed‐ and open‐crown forest, and to the southern onset of the forest tundra (i.e., the forest limit), respectively. The spatial distribution of ecotones was most strongly related to air temperature for chironomids and to vegetation‐ and soil‐related chemical attributes of lake water for diatoms, including dissolved organic carbon content and water color. Lakes at mid‐ to high‐latitudes currently face pressures from rapidly rising temperatures, accompanied by large increases in organic carbon inputs from their catchments, often leading to browning and its associated effects. The biota at the base of food webs in lakes located in transition zones are disproportionately affected by the cascading effects of these multi‐factorial changes, concurrent with pronounced terrestrial greening observed in these regions. Similar patterns of biotic shifts have been observed along alpine aquatic transects, indicating the potential for widespread restructuring of cold, high‐altitude and high‐latitude freshwater communities due to global change.  相似文献

In higher‐latitude trees, temperature and photoperiod control the beginning and end of the photosynthetically active season. Elevated temperature (ET) has advanced spring warming and delayed autumn cooling while photoperiod remains unchanged. We assessed the effects of warming on the length of the photosynthetically active season of three provenances of Pinus strobus L. seedlings from different latitudes, and evaluated the accuracy of the photochemical reflectance index (PRI) and the chlorophyll/carotenoid index (CCI) for tracking the predicted variation in spring and autumn phenology of photosynthesis among provenances. Seedlings from northern, local and southern P. strobus provenances were planted in a temperature‐free‐air‐controlled enhancement (T‐FACE) experiment and exposed to ET (+1.5/3°C; day/night). Over 18 months, we assessed photosynthetic phenology by measuring chlorophyll fluorescence, gas exchange, leaf spectral reflectance and pigment content. During autumn, all seedlings regardless of provenance followed the same sequence of phenological events with the initial downregulation of photosynthesis, followed by the modulation of non‐photochemical quenching and associated adjustments of zeaxanthin pool sizes. However, the timing of autumn downregulation differed between provenances, with delayed onset in the southern provenance (SP) and earlier onset in the northern relative to the local provenance, indicating that photoperiod at the provenance origin is a dominant factor controlling autumn phenology. Experimental warming further delayed the downregulation of photosynthesis during autumn in the SP. A provenance effect during spring was also observed but was generally not significant. The vegetation indices PRI and CCI were both effective at tracking the seasonal variations of energy partitioning in needles and the differences of carotenoid pigments indicative of the stress status of needles. These results demonstrate that PRI and CCI can be useful tools for monitoring conifer phenology and for the remote monitoring of the length of the photosynthetically active season of conifers in a changing climate.  相似文献

Infectious disease emergence has increased significantly over the last 30 years, with mass mortality events (MMEs) associated with epizootics becoming increasingly common. Factors influencing these events have been widely studied in terrestrial systems, but remain relatively unexplored in marine mammals. Infectious disease‐induced MMEs (ID MMEs) have not been reported ubiquitously among marine mammal species, indicating that intrinsic (host) and/or extrinsic (environmental) ecological factors may influence this heterogeneity. We assess the occurrence of ID MMEs (1955–2018) across extant marine mammals (n = 129) in relation to key life‐history characteristics (sociality, trophic level, habitat breadth) and environmental variables (season, sea surface temperature [SST] anomalies, El Niño occurrence). Our results show that ID MMEs have been reported in 14% of marine mammal species (95% CI 9%–21%), with 72% (n = 36; 95% CI 56%–84%) of these events caused predominantly by viruses, primarily morbillivirus and influenza A. Bacterial pathogens caused 25% (95% CI 14%–41%) of MMEs, with only one being the result of a protozoan pathogen. Overall, virus‐induced MMEs involved a greater number of fatalities per event compared to other pathogens. No association was detected between the occurrence of ID MMEs and host characteristics, such as sociality or trophic level, but ID MMEs did occur more frequently in semiaquatic species (pinnipeds) compared to obligate ocean dwellers (cetaceans; χ2 = 9.6, p = .002). In contrast, extrinsic factors significantly influenced ID MMEs, with seasonality linked to frequency (χ2 = 19.85, p = .0002) and severity of these events, and global yearly SST anomalies positively correlated with their temporal occurrence (Z = 3.43, p = 2.7e‐04). No significant association was identified between El Niño and ID MME occurrence (Z = 0.28, p = .81). With climate change forecasted to increase SSTs and the frequency of extreme seasonal weather events, epizootics causing MMEs are likely to intensify with significant consequences for marine mammal survival.  相似文献

Many gram‐positive bacteria produce bacillithiol to aid in the maintenance of redox homeostasis and degradation of toxic compounds, including the antibiotic fosfomycin. Bacillithiol is produced via a three‐enzyme pathway that includes the action of the zinc‐dependent deacetylase BshB. Previous studies identified conserved aspartate and histidine residues within the active site that are involved in metal binding and catalysis, but the enzymatic mechanism is not fully understood. Here we report two X‐ray crystallographic structures of BshB from Bacillus subtilis that provide insight into the BshB catalytic mechanism.  相似文献

Mammalian endogenous circadian rhythms are entrained to the environmental day-night cycle by light exposure. Melatonin is involved in this entrainment by signaling the day-night information to the endogenous circadian pacemaker. Furthermore, melatonin is known to affect the circadian rhythm of body temperature directly. A striking property of the endogenous melatonin signal is its synthesis pattern, characterized by long-term elevated melatonin levels throughout the night. In the present study, the influence of prolonged treatment with the melatonin agonist S20098 during the activity phase of free-running rats was examined. This was achieved by giving S20098 in the food. The free-running body temperature and activity rhythms were studied. The present study shows that enhancement of the melatonin signal, using S20098, affected the free-running rhythm by gradual phase advances of the start of the activity phase, consequently causing an increase in length of the activity phase. A well-known feature of circadian rhythms is its time-dependent sensitivity for light. Light pulse exposure of an animal housed under continuous dark conditions can cause a phase shift of the circadian pacemaker. Therefore, in a second experiment, the influence of melatonin receptor stimulation on the sensitivity of the pacemaker to light was examined by giving the melatonin agonist S20098 in the food during 1 day prior to exposure to a 60-min light pulse of 0, 1.5, 15, or 150 lux given at circadian time (CT) 14. S20098 pretreatment caused a diminished lightpulse- induced phase shift when a light pulse of low light intensity (1.5 lux) was given. S20098 treatment via the food was sufficient to exert chronobiotic activity, and S20098 treatment resulting in prolonged overstimulation of melatonin receptors is able to attenuate the effect of light on the circadian timing system. The dried peripheral area of pond Idumban (62 ha) increased from 3.2 ha in January to 3 1.9 ha in April. Pila globosa, which were abundant in the littoral area, did not commence aestivation during this period, perhaps due to low temperature and/or high dissolved oxygen content. The number of aestivating snails averaged 0.5/m2 in May, 1973 (3.6% of the total population) and it increased to 1.1/M2 in September (26.2%). Biomass of the snail increased from 3.5 to 19.9 g dry weight (including shell)/M2. Number of aestivating snails increased from 0.4/m2 (5.2% of the total population) in May 1974 to 0.8/m2 (11.1%) in July and the biomass from 4.1 g/m2 to 10.7 g/m2. Availability of dried area for aestivation increased from 5.3 to 23.7 ha in 1973 and from 13.5 to 30.2 ha in 1974.Monthly observations made on the marked snails forced to aestivate at 7.5, 15.0, 22.5 and 30.0 cm depth in the pond during May, revealed that temperature above 35°C and moisture below 5% were critical. Mortality and weight loss decreased in the snails forced to aestivate at increasing depth. Random observations indicated that 83% of the aestivating snails buried themselves at 15 cm depth in the pond. On the whole, 98,480 snails (592 Kg) and 115,270 (758 Kg) died during aestivation in 1973 and 1974 respectively. Of the total weight loss, the energy lost via metabolism contributed only a small fraction of 2.2% (12 Kg) and 2.1% (15 Kg) during these years. Considering the total aestivation area, the snails which succumbed averaged only 0.4/m2/year (2.5 g/m2/year). On an average, dry substance equivalent to about 2.6 mg dry weight/ g dry weight of snail/ day (3.7 gcal/ g live snail/ day) was lost on metabolism by the aestivating snails, i.e. the metabolic level of the aestivating snail was about 1 / 18th of that of the actively feeding snail.  相似文献
