BACKGROUND: Genital tract infections are common during pregnancy and can result in adverse outcomes including preterm birth and neonatal infection. This hypothesis‐generating study examined whether these infections are associated with selected birth defects. METHODS: We conducted a case‐control study of 5913 children identified as controls and 12,158 cases with birth defects from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (1997–2004). Maternal interviews provided data on genital tract infections that occurred from one month before pregnancy through the end of the first trimester. Infections were either grouped together as a single overall exposure or were considered as a subgroup that included chlamydia/gonorrhea/pelvic inflammatory disease. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using unconditional logistic regression with adjustment for potential confounders. RESULTS: Genital tract infections were associated with bilateral renal agenesis/hypoplasia (OR, 2.89; 95% CI, 1.11–7.50), cleft lip with or without cleft palate (OR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.03–2.06), and transverse limb deficiency (OR, 1.84; 95% CI, 1.04–3.26). Chlamydia/gonorrhea/pelvic inflammatory disease was associated with cleft lip only (OR, 2.81; 95% CI, 1.39–5.69). These findings were not statistically significant after adjustment for multiple comparisons. CONCLUSIONS: Caution is needed in interpreting these findings due to the possible misclassification of infection, the limited sample size that constrained consideration of the effects of treatment, and the possibility of chance associations. Although these data do not provide strong evidence for an association between genital tract infections and birth defects, additional research on the possible effects of these relatively common infections is needed. Introduction
In North-West Europe, cardiovascular disease is still a major cause of death and despite several efforts (e.g. European guidelines and conferences) cardiovascular risk factors are still inconsistently diagnosed and treated.Methods
We evaluated the first consultations of patients in two cardiovascular referral clinics in France and the Netherlands, while evaluating the differences in national guidelines and between the profiles of patients at their first consultation.Results
Notable differences exist between the two locally used guidelines in their programmes of cardiovascular risk assessment and their definition of LDL-cholesterol target levels. With regard to the LDL-cholesterol levels, more patients are ‘on target’ when using the French guideline than when using the Dutch guideline. Evaluation of the patient’s profile at first presentation showed that the LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly lower in the Dutch patients (n = 77) compared with the French patients (n = 119). Dutch patients used significantly more statins than French patients.Conclusion
Despite the small study population included in this study, we found that comparison of daily care (as part of a primary prevention programme) is rather difficult due to several national differences in the approach to patients. All these factors combined should be taken into account, when discussing and extrapolating results obtained from analysis of cardiovascular prevention programmes. 相似文献864.

Caveolin-1 (Cav-1) isoforms, including Cav-1α and Cav-1β, were identified as integral membrane proteins and the major components
of caveolae. Cav-1 proteins are highly conserved during evolution from {itCaenorhabditis elegans} to human and are capable
of interacting with many signaling molecules through their caveolin scaffolding domains to regulate the activities of multiple
signaling pathways. Thus, Cav-1 plays crucial roles in the regulation of cellular proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis
in a cell-specific and contextual manner. In addition, Cav-1 is essential for embryonic development of vertebrates owing to
its regulation of BMP, Wnt, TGF-β and other key signaling molecules. Moreover, Cav-1 is mainly expressed in terminally differentiated
cells and its abnormal expression is often associated with human diseases, such as tumor progression, cardiovascular diseases,
fibrosis, lung regeneration, and diseases related to virus. In this review, we will further discuss the potential of Cav-1

Bacteria present in ejaculates can impair sperm function and reduce male reproductive success. Thus, selection should favour the evolution of antimicrobial defences to limit the detrimental effects of sperm-associated bacteria. Additionally, current hypotheses suggest that ornamental traits may signal information about the infection status of an individual or the ability of an individual to resist bacterial-induced sperm damage. However, despite the evolutionary implications of ejaculate antimicrobials, and the putative importance of pathogens for the evolution of male ornamentation, tests of these hypotheses are lacking. We examined the antibacterial activity of semen from mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and tested whether the bactericidal capacity of semen was associated with bill coloration, a sexually selected trait. We show that mallard semen exhibits significant antibacterial activity, as measured by the in vitro capacity to kill Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, we demonstrate that males with more colourful bills have semen with superior bacterial-killing ability. These results suggest that females could use male phenotypic traits to avoid sexually transmitted pathogens and acquire partners whose sperm suffer less bacteria-induced damage. 相似文献

The problem of micronutrient deficiencies in the diet of indigenous people of Imo State can be solved not only by improving the diet, but also by identifying nutritious foods as well as making such foods available both in quantities and qualities that needed to improve health. Plantain is widely consumed in many ways such as baked, fried, boiled, steamed, dried or eaten raw and the management demand for plantain make production expensive and out of the reach of resource for poor indigenes. Plantain production must cope with numerous environmental challenges particularly with fungal, bacteria, viral and nematode pathogens as well as pests and non-pathogenic diseases which reduce plantain production. Plantain is highly rich in iron, zinc and β-carotene whose deficiencies are commonly reported in children and women of reproductive age. The most serious disease of plantain is the black Sigatoka caused by Mycosphaerella fijiensis. Others include Fusarium wilt, anthracnose, bacteria wilt, fruit rot, burrowing nematode Radopholus similis and bract mosaic. There had been scientific approaches to combat these diseases such as use of chemicals, biological enhancement, crop sanitation, use of alternative and collateral hosts as well as genetic manipulations. 相似文献

Trunk diseases are a potential threat for the almond industry in Northern Iran. In a survey on fungal agents associated with almond die back and decline in East Azerbaijan province, located in Northwest of Iran, acremonium-like hyphomycete isolates with hyaline and simple conidiophores and hyaline cylindrical phialides with a finely pigmented apical region and deep, flaring collarettes were repeatedly recovered from symptomatic tissues. Fungal isolates were identified as Calosphaeria pulchella based on cultural and morphological characteristics. The identity of the species was further confirmed based on the sequence data from LSU and ITS rDNA regions. A phylogeny inferred using ITS sequence data, clustered the Calosphaeria isolates together with Calosphaeria pulchella isolates in GenBank known from Prunus persica and Prunus avium. The results of pathogenicity assay using an excised shoot method showed that Calosphaeria pulchella is highly pathogenic on almond. The distribution and host range of this new pathogen on almond and the impact of the disease on almond industry in this region remain to be studied. 相似文献
