ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Between July and September 2005, a preliminary sampling of the elderly population of Hizen-Oshima Island, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan was conducted by the local hospital's nursing staff. RESULTS: Reported here are preliminary results from this sample of 27 individuals with an average age of 71 years. Their ages ranged from 51 to 82 years, with a standard deviation (sd) of 7.4 years. In total, 33 aspects of physical and physiological variation were assessed on these 15 women and 12 men. As expected from previous studies of Japanese elders, our sample shows slightly elevated average blood pressure (142/81 mmHg, sd 16/10), but they are relatively lean (waist/hip = .9: sd 0.06) when compared to European or American standards. However, their average total cholesterol (TC = 210 mg/dl, sd = 42.8) is high compared to standards, as is their high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc = 55.4 mg/dl, sd = 15.1). Means, standard deviations (sd), ranges, and upper bounds for quartile cut-points for all 10 variables used in the calculation of allostatic load (AL) were assessed. The overall average estimate for AL in this sample is 3.1 (sd = 1.58) and ranges from 1-7. CONCLUSION: AL shows variability across men and women, has little correlation with age, and is associated with physiological variation in blood glucose, dopamine, and uric acid.  相似文献

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacterial (PGPR) strains were isolated from different agro-ecosystems of Tamil Nadu, India, and were tested for their efficacy against the sheath rot pathogen Sarocladium oryzae under in vitro, glasshouse and field conditions. Vigour and a relative performance index (RPI) were used to assay the growth promotion and antagonistic activity of Pseudomonas strains against S. oryzae under in vitro conditions. The results revealed the significant performance by strains Pf1, TDK1 and PY15 compared to other strains. Further, the combination of Pseudomonas strains Pf1, TDK1 and PY15 was more effective in reducing sheath rot disease in rice plants compared to individual strains under glasshouse and field conditions. Quantitative and native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) analysis of peroxidase (PO), polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and chitinase activity in rice plants showed an increased accumulation of defence enzymes in the treatment with a combination of Pf1, TDK1 and PY15 compared to the treatment with individual strains and untreated controls. The present study revealed the probable influence of antagonism, plant growth promotion and induced systemic resistance (ISR) by the mixture of Pseudomonas bioformulations in enhancing the disease resistance in rice plants against sheath rot disease.

摘要 目的:研究运动想象训练联合三维旋进式振动疗法对脑卒中偏瘫患者平衡能力、上肢功能及日常生活活动能力的影响。方法:研究对象来源于苏州市立医院康复医学科2019年4月~2022年4月期间收治的80例脑卒中偏瘫患者。入院后按照计算机产生随机数进行随机分配为对照组和研究组,每组各40例。对照组患者接受运动想象训练,研究组患者接受三维旋进式振动疗法联合运动想象训练。对比两组疗效、上肢功能、平衡能力及日常生活活动能力。结果:两组患者干预2周后、干预4周后Fugl-Meyer上肢运动功能量表(FM-uL)、上肢动作研究量表(ARAT)评分均升高,且研究组均高于对照组同期;改良Ashworth痉挛量表(MAS)评分均下降,且研究组低于对照组同期(P<0.05)。两组患者干预2周后、干预4周后Berg平衡量表(BBS)评分均升高,且研究组高于对照组同期(P<0.05)。两组患者干预2周后、干预4周后Barthel指数(BI)评分均升高,且研究组高于对照组同期(P<0.05)。结论:运动想象训练联合三维旋进式振动疗法干预脑卒中偏瘫患者,可有效改善患者的平衡能力、上肢功能及日常生活活动能力。  相似文献

Objective: To determine the association of sarcopenic obesity with the onset of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) disability in a cohort of 451 elderly men and women followed for up to 8 years. Research Methods and Procedures: Sarcopenic obesity was defined at study baseline as appendicular skeletal muscle mass divided by stature squared <7.26 kg/m2 in men and 5.45 kg/m2 in women and percentage body fat greater than the 60th percentile of the study sample (28% body fat in men and 40% in women). Incident disability was defined as a loss of two or more points from baseline score on the IADL. Subjects with disability at baseline (scores < 8) were excluded. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to determine the association of baseline sarcopenic obesity with onset of IADL disability, controlling for potential confounders. Results: Subjects with sarcopenic obesity at baseline were two to three times more likely to report onset of IADL disability during follow‐up than lean sarcopenic or nonsarcopenic obese subjects and those with normal body composition. The relative risk for incident disability in sarcopenic obese subjects was 2.63 (95% confidence interval, 1.19 to 5.85), adjusting for age, sex, physical activity level, length of follow‐up, and prevalent morbidity. Discussion: This is the first study, to our knowledge, to indicate that sarcopenic obesity is independently associated with and precedes the onset of IADL disability in the community‐dwelling elderly. The etiology of sarcopenic obesity is unknown but may include a combination of decreases in anabolic signals and obesity‐associated increases in catabolic signals in old age.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Vegetative storage proteins (VSPs) are commonly bioactive in herbaceous plants but few VSPs with bioactivity have been identified in trees. In addition, information on the characterization of VSPs in evergreen trees is limited. The objective of this study was to characterize the VSPs with bioactivity in evergreen trees. Methods The VSP in lychee (Litchi chinensis), an evergreen fruit tree, was characterized by a combination of cytological, biochemical and molecular biological techniques. KEY RESULTS: The VSP in lychee was a 22-kDa protein. It accumulated in the large central vacuoles of protein-storing cells (PSCs) in two distinguishable forms, granular and floccular. The PSCs were of a novel type. The 22-kDa protein is distributed in mature leaves, bark tissues of branches, trunk and large roots, paralleling the distribution of PSCs. Its homologues were present in mature seed. During young shoot development and fruiting, the 22-kDa protein decreased apparently, suggesting a nitrogen-storage function. The 22-kDa protein had several isoforms encoded by a small multigene family. One gene member, LcVSP1, was cloned. The LcVSP1 had no intron and contained a 675 bp open reading frame encoding a putative protein of 225 amino acids. LcVSP1 was homologous to Kunitz trypsin inhibitors. The 22-kDa protein inhibited trypsin and chymotrypsin, but had no inhibitory effect on subtilisin. CONCLUSIONS: Lychee is rich in a 22-kDa VSP with trypsin inhibitor activity. The VSP plays an important role in nitrogen storage while its possible defensive function remains to be elucidated.  相似文献

Freshwater ciliates of the genusEuplotes change their morphology in response to the presence of predators. The morphological transformations limit the ability of the predators to ingest the ciliates. Induction of defensive morphology by the predatorsStenostomum sphagnetorum (Turbellaria),Lembadion bullinum (Ciliata),L. magnum, andAmoeba proteus (Rhizopoda) was studied inEuplotes aediculatus andE. octocarinatus. The results suggest the possibility of natural occurrence of predator-induced defensive morphology inEuplotes. A density of 1 predator ml−1 was sufficient to induce significant changes in the morphology ofEuplotes. L. magnum was found at natural population densities of 5 individuals ml−1. Transformations can take place within 2–4 h. Morphological changes are induced by signal substances released from the predators; direct contact between prey and predators is not necessary. The extent of transformation depends on the concentration of the signal substance. The size frequency distribution of the populations only had one peak that was related to predator density. All individuals of a population ofEuplotes changed their morphology according to the predator abundance. This may reduce energy costs for the prey by prevention of unnecessary morphological changes.Amoeba proteus induces morphological changes inE. octocarinatus, but not inE. aediculatus.  相似文献

The Australian stingless bee Trigona carbonaria sometimes displays a striking collective behaviour, known as a ‘fighting swarm’ in which thousands of workers fight and die. Molecular analysis of eight naturally-occurring fights showed they almost always comprise just two colonies, one of which is located within 2 m of the fight. Fighting swarms were experimentally triggered by manipulating colonies so that they received non-nestmate workers.
