Sexual parasitism, a remarkable mode of reproduction unique to some members of the deep-sea anglerfish suborder Ceratioidei, in which males are dwarfed and become permanently attached to much larger females, is described in a number of previously unreported specimens and taxa. Although generally attributed to all ceratioids, and despite more than a sevenfold increase in the number of known parasitized females in collections throughout the world in the past 50 years, the phenomenon is surprisingly confined to few taxa within the suborder. To date, permanently attached males have been found in only 5 of the 11 ceratioid families, 10 of the 35 genera, and 23 of the 160 recognized species. Notes on taxonomic content, available material, occurrence of sexual parasitism, gravid females and ripe males, the development of eyes and nostrils of the males, the ability of males to capture and ingest food independently of the female, occurrences of multiple attachments of males to a single female, and the nature of the fusion between coupled males and females are given for each ceratioid family. This information is then summarized and discussed. Evidence is presented to reaffirm the presence of three reproductive modes: obligatory parasitism, facultative parasitism, and temporary nonparasitic attachment. Additional evidence is provided to reaffirm the hypothesis that sexual parasitism has evolved separately at least three and perhaps five or more times within the suborder.  相似文献

The nature and extent of mutational pleiotropy remain largely unknown, despite the central role that pleiotropy plays in many areas of biology, including human disease, agricultural production, and evolution. Here, we investigate the variation in 11,604 gene expression traits among 41 mutation accumulation (MA) lines of Drosophila serrata. We first confirmed that these expression phenotypes were heritable, detecting genetic variation in 96% of them in an outbred, natural population of D. serrata. Among the MA lines, 3385 (29%) of expression traits were variable, with a mean mutational heritability of 0.0005. In most traits, variation was generated by mutations of relatively small phenotypic effect; putative mutations with effects of greater than one phenotypic standard deviation were observed for only 8% of traits. With most (71%) traits unaffected by any mutation, our data provide no support for universal pleiotropy. We further characterized mutational pleiotropy in the 3385 variable traits, using sets of 5, randomly assigned, traits. Covariance among traits chosen at random with respect to their biological function is expected only if pleiotropy is extensive. Taking an analytical approach in which the variance unique to each trait in the random 5-trait sets was partitioned from variance shared among traits, we detected significant (at 5% false discovery rate) mutational covariance in 21% of sets. This frequency of statistically supported covariance implied that at least some mutations must pleiotropically affect a substantial number of traits (>70; 0.6% of all measured traits).  相似文献

Summary The distribution of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)- and neuropeptide Y (NPY)-immunoreactive(IR) nerve fibers in the pineal complex was investigated in untreated rats and rats following bilateral removal of the superior cervical ganglia. In normal animals, a large number of TH- and NPY-IR nerve fibers were present in the pineal capsule, the perivascular spaces, and intraparenchymally between the pinealocytes throughout the superficial pineal and deep pineal gland. A small number of TH-IR and NPY-IR nerve fibers were found in the posterior and habenular commissures, a few fibers penetrating from the commissures into the deep pineal gland. To elucidate the origin of these fibers, the superior cervical ganglion was removed bilaterally in 10 animals, and the pineal complex was examined immunohistochemically. Two weeks after the ganglionectomy, the TH-IR and NPY-IR nerve fibers in the superficial pineal gland had almost completely disappeared. On the other hand, in the deep pineal and the pineal stalk, the TH-IR and NPY-IR fibers were still present after ganglionectomy. These data show that the deep pineal gland and the pineal stalk possess an extrasympathetic innervation by TH-IR and NPY-IR fibers. It is suggested that the extrasympathetic TH-IR and NPY-IR nerve fibers innervating the deep pineal and the pineal stalk originate from the brain.  相似文献
