Live (i.e. rose Bengal stained) benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the 0–1 cm layer of multiple core samples were examined at three contrasting sites in the northeast Atlantic as part of the Natural Environment Research Council Deep Ocean Benthic Boundary Layer (BENBO) Thematic Programme. Sites A (3600 m water depth) and C (1900 m) were located in the Rockall Trough while Site B (1100 m) was in the Hatton–Rockall Basin. Wet-sorting sediment residues (>125 m fraction) revealed more abundant (98–190 individuals/10 cm2) and diverse (71–99 species /27 cm2) assemblages than found previously in studies employing dry-sorting techniques. At all three sites, the assemblages were numerically dominated by delicate soft-bodied and agglutinated species, most of which are undescribed. Calcareous taxa formed a relatively small proportion of the assemblages (23% of individuals at Site B, 13% at Site C and 7% at Site A). Conversely, the agglutinated hormosinaceans (mainly Reophax species) became more prominent with increasing depth and accounted for 8% of the assemblage at Site B, 33% at Site C and 51% at Site A. Foraminifera represented 67–81% of the fauna in the samples and greatly outnumbered the metazoans. The assemblage at Site A has similarities with abyssal assemblages, while those at Sites B and C contain characteristic bathyal species. At Site B, Uvigerina peregrina and Melonis barleeanum are abundant, suggesting that there are high organic carbon inputs at this site. Reduced species diversity was observed at Site A following the spring phytodetritus bloom due to the presence of large numbers of juvenile Hoeglundina elegans, although it is not clear whether this species is responding to phytodetritus inputs. 相似文献

The low density, detergent-insoluble membrane fraction (LD-DIM), where gangliosides are likely to be highly enriched, was prepared from sperm of two sea urchin species, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus and Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. Immunoblotting showed the presence in the LD-DIM of two receptors for egg ligands, a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored protein, and four proteins which may be involved in signal transduction. Co-immunoprecipitation revealed that at least three proteins, the speract receptor, the 63[emsp4 ]kDa GPI-anchored protein and the subunit of a heterotrimeric Gs protein, are localized in the LD-DIM. This suggests that the LD-DIM fraction may be a membrane microdomain for speract–speract receptor interaction, as well as the subsequent signal transduction pathway involved in induction of sperm respiration, motility and possibly the acrosome reaction. 相似文献

In the present study the genetic structure of Dicentrarchus labrax (14 samples from the Mediterranean) was analysed at six microsatellite loci, in order to test the hypothesis that some enzymatic loci undergo selection between marine and lagoon habitat. Eight of the 14 samples were analysed at both microsatellite and allozyme markers. The analysis of the genetic variation among the Mediterranean samples showed that (i) &Fcirc;ST values obtained with the six microsatellite loci were much smaller than those obtained with the 28 allozymes and (ii) microsatellite loci seemed to reflect more the geographical proximity than an ecological one. Thirteen enzymatic loci exhibited moderate to high values compared with microsatellites. This was interpreted as evidence that these allozymes are non-neutral. However, only six loci seemed to be implicated in differentiation between marine and lagoon samples, the causes of selection being unknown for the others. A possible scenario of population dynamics of the sea bass between marine and lagoon habitat is suggested. 相似文献

A 50 bp region from -194 bp to -144 bp of the arylsulfatase gene (HpArs) of the sea urchin, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus, is related to the temporally regulated expression of this gene. This region contains a Sox (Sry-related HMG box)-binding site, and the introduction of sequence mutations to this site significantly reduced the activity of the HpArs promoter, even in the presence of the C15 enhancer, which consists of HpOtx and CAAT motifs. A protein that binds to the Sox-binding site in the 50 bp region of the HpArs gene was detected in nuclear extracts of mesenchyme blastulae and a protein synthesized in vitro using SoxB1 cDNA of another sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, also bound to this Sox site. These results suggest that HpSox, which is maternally expressed and remains abundant by the pluteus stage, is clearly implicated in regulation of the HpArs gene. The presence of a negatively acting cis element in this 50 bp region has also been detected. 相似文献

In sea urchin embryos, the rate of respiration, as a result of electron transport through the mitochondrial respiratory chain, was enhanced after hatching without any change in the intrinsic capacity of electron transport in mitochondria. The increase in respiratory rate after hatching was accompanied by an evident decrease in intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentration without any change in intracellular levels of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and adenosine monophosphate (AMP). Adenosine triphosphate is proposed to fortify acceptor control of respiration at high concentrations and to reduce the respiratory rate even in the presence of ADP, the acceptor. The relationships between the respiratory rate and intracellular ATP concentration in embryos were the same as those in mitochondria isolated from embryos, obtained in the presence of ADP at the same concentration as in the embryos. Probably, the respiratory rate is enhanced after hatching because of the decrease in the level of ATP. In embryos kept in a medium containing adenosine, intracellular ATP concentration increased especially after hatching, without any change in the ADP level, and the respiratory rate after hatching was made as low as the rate expected, based on the relationships obtained on isolated mitochondria. The respiratory rate in embryos probably depends on intracellular ATP concentration, irrespective of the developmental stage in early development. 相似文献

A large number of mycolate actinomycetes have been recovered from deep-sea sediments in the NW Pacific Ocean using selective isolation methods. The isolates were putatively assigned to the genus Rhodococcus on the basis of colony characteristics and mycolic acid profiles. The diversity among these isolates and their relationship to type strains of Rhodococcus and other mycolate taxa were assessed by Curie point pyrolysis mass spectrometry (PyMS). Three major (A, C, D) and two minor (B, E) groups were defined by PyMS. Cluster A was a large group of isolates recovered from sediment in the Izu Bonin Trench (2679 m); Cluster C comprised isolates from both the Izu Bonin Trench (6390 and 6499 m) and from the Japan Trench (4418, 6048 and 6455 m). These Cluster C isolates showed close similarity to Dietzia maris and this was subsequently confirmed using molecular methods. Cluster D contained isolates recovered from a sediment taken from a depth of 1168m in Sagami Bay and were identified as members of the terrestrial species Rhodococcus luteus. Clusters B and E had close affinities with members of the genera Gordonia and Mycobacterium. The presence of Thermoactinomyces in certain of the deep-sea sediments studied was indicative of the movement of terrestrial material into the ocean depths.16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence analyses produced excellent definition of most genera of the mycolata, and indicated that the among the deep sea isolates (1) were novel species of Corynebacterium, Gordonia and Mycobacterium, and (2) a Sea of Japan isolate the phylogenetic depth of which suggests the possibility of a new genus. Polyphasic taxonomic analysis revealed considerable diversity among the deep sea rhodococci and evidence for recently diverged species or DNA groups. 相似文献

Genetic diversity and population structure in two species of sea cucumber: differing patterns according to mode of development 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The population structure of two species of sea cucumber was examined based on mitochondrial DNA sequence analysis. Cucumaria miniata , a species with pelagic nonfeeding larvae lasting less than 2 weeks, and C. pseudocurata , a brooding species lacking a pelagic phase, both occur over similar wide ranges of the northeastern Pacific between Alaska and California. No significant genetic structuring was observed among C. miniata samples with 95% of the observed nucleotide variance attributable to that within population samples. Conversely, only 3.4% of the observed variance was attributed to that within C. pseudocurata population samples, with sampling sites typically greater than 100 km apart. At a finer scale, two C. pseudocurata population samples taken 5 km apart were not statistically different. A significant genetic disjunction was observed among populations of the brooding species, but not in species with pelagic larvae, north of Vancouver Island, Canada, corresponding to the splitting of the California and Alaska currents. Given the observed high levels of genetic diversity in northern samples, this genetic break indicates survival in northern, as well as southern, Pleistocene refugia. At present, researchers propose that over 14,000 seamounts exist and, like their terrestrial analogues, function like islands. In addition, seamounts are described as oases, biodiversity hotspots, and lush coral/sponge gardens. Here I discuss the extent to which these tenets regarding seamounts may be inappropriate, suffer from a lack of support, and be over-generalizations of a broad range of environmental types encountered on seamounts. Ultimately, for seamount science to progress, we need to challenge our conventional wisdom on these habitats and the extent to which all seamounts function in a similar manner.
