Balancing forest conservation with resource extraction by local people is challenging. In the mountain forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, this was addressed by permitting regulated access to certain forest products in specific areas by authorized local people. However, it remained unclear whether harvest levels were biologically sustainable. Here, we used matrix population models and long‐term data to examine the impacts of bark harvesting on population dynamics of two important medicinal plants, Rytigynia kigeziensis and Ocotea usambarensis, in Bwindi. Only 4% of R. kigeziensis and 3% of O. usambarensis stems (>1.3 m height) showed signs of bark harvest, mostly mild harvesting. We found that the harvested populations of both species appeared stable or will moderately grow in the long run. Modelled population growth rates were mostly determined by survival probabilities. Similarity between the stable stage distributions predicted by the model and observed population structures suggests that our estimated vital rates (growth, recruitment and survival rates) are a reasonable representation of actual values in these populations. Thus, recent harvest levels of R. kigeziensis and O. usambarensis appear sustainable. Nonetheless, monitoring of harvested and unharvested populations by tagging, marking and remeasuring individuals should continue for both species.  相似文献

Cross‐border studies offer unique situations to study the impact of different land‐use regimes on ecosystems. Along the Angolan and Namibian border formed by the Okavango River, the environmental conditions and traditional land‐use practises are the same on either side of the river. However, decades of civil war in Angola led to a stagnant development while political stability in Namibia fostered a recent socio‐economic transformation. We investigated the impact of spatially diffuse land use on plant diversity of the dry tropical woodlands covering the vast, sandy hinterlands of the river. As accessibility is the major factor governing land use, we used distance to road as a proxy for land‐use intensity. Based on 58 vegetation plots sized 20 m × 50 m, we showed that species richness increased with distance to road in Angola while in Namibia it remained constant on a lower level. Evenness showed an inverse pattern to species richness and Shannon diversity index showed no response. Analysing diversity patterns according to life forms revealed that these patterns are primarily driven by woody species. The study showed that spatially diffuse land use has a measurable effect on plant diversity and illustrates that roads act as vectors of change.  相似文献

Agricultural conversion of tropical forests is a major driver of biodiversity loss. Slowing rates of deforestation is a conservation priority, but it is also useful to consider how species diversity is retained across the agricultural matrix. Here, we assess how bird diversity varies in relation to land use in the Taita Hills, Kenya. We used point counts to survey birds along a land‐use gradient that included primary forest, secondary vegetation, agroforest, timber plantation and cropland. We found that the agricultural matrix supports an abundant and diverse bird community with high levels of species turnover, but that forest specialists are confined predominantly to primary forest, with the matrix dominated by forest visitors. Ordination analyses showed that representation of forest specialists decreases with distance from primary forest. With the exception of forest generalists, bird abundance and diversity are lowest in timber plantations. Contrary to expectation, we found feeding guilds at similar abundances in all land‐use types. We conclude that whilst the agricultural matrix, and agroforest in particular, makes a strong contribution to observed bird diversity at the landscape scale, intact primary forest is essential for maintaining this diversity, especially amongst species of conservation concern.  相似文献

Dopamine D2 receptors (D2Rs) consistently emerge as a critical substrate for the etiology of some major psychiatric disorders. Indeed, a central theory of substance use disorders (SUDs) postulates that a reduction in D2R levels in the striatum is a determining factor that confers vulnerability to abuse substances. A large number of clinical and preclinical studies strongly support this link between SUDs and D2Rs; however, identifying the mechanism by which low D2Rs facilitate SUDs has been hindered by the complexity of circuit connectivity, the heterogeneity of D2R expression and the multifaceted constellation of phenotypes observed in SUD patient. Animal models are well‐suited for understanding the mechanisms because they allow access to the circuitry and the genetic tools that enable a dissection of the D2R heterogeneity. This review discusses recent findings on the functional role of D2Rs and highlights the distinctive contributions of D2Rs expressed on specific neuronal subpopulations to the behavioral responses to stimulant drugs. A circuit‐wide restructuring of local and long‐range inhibitory connectivity within the basal ganglia is observed in response to manipulation of striatal D2R levels and is accompanied by multiple alterations in dopamine‐dependent behaviors. Collectively, these new findings provide compelling evidence for a critical role of striatal D2Rs in shaping basal ganglia connectivity; even among neurons that do not express D2Rs. These findings from animal models have deep clinical implications for SUD patients with low levels D2R availability where a similar restructuring of basal ganglia circuitry is expected to take place.  相似文献

With its ease of availability during adolescence, sweetened ethanol (‘alcopops’) is consumed within many contexts. We asked here whether genetically based differences in social motivation are associated with how the adolescent social environment impacts voluntary ethanol intake. Mice with previously described differences in sociability (BALB/cJ, C57BL/6J, FVB/NJ and MSM/MsJ strains) were weaned into isolation or same‐sex pairs (postnatal day, PD, 21), and then given continuous access to two fluids on PDs 34–45: one containing water and the other containing an ascending series of saccharin‐sweetened ethanol (3–6–10%). Prior to the introduction of ethanol (PDs 30–33), increased water and food intake was detected in some of the isolation‐reared groups, and controls indicated that isolated mice also consumed more ‘saccharin‐only’ solution. Voluntary drinking of ‘ethanol‐only’ was also higher in a subset of the isolated groups on PDs 46–49. However, sweetened ethanol intake was increased in all isolated strain × sex combinations irrespective of genotype. Surprisingly, blood ethanol concentration (BEC) was not different between these isolate and socially housed groups 4 h into the dark phase. Using lickometer‐based measures of intake in FVB mice, we identified that a predominance of increased drinking during isolation transpired outside of the typical circadian consumption peak, occurring ≈8.5 h into the dark phase, with an associated difference in BEC. These findings collectively indicate that isolate housing leads to increased consumption of rewarding substances in adolescent mice independent of their genotype, and that for ethanol this may be because of when individuals drink during the circadian cycle.  相似文献

通过对不同基因型甜菜土壤有机氮利用及吸收效率的筛选和差异分析,为土壤有机氮高效基因型甜菜的栽培及品种选育提供理论依据。2014-2015年选取100份不同基因型的甜菜材料通过室内及田间试验在甜菜的不同发育阶段比较并分析土壤有机氮效率,筛选出对有机氮利用及吸收效率均显著差异的高效和低效基因型甜菜材料。结果表明,初步筛选得到的有机氮高效基因型甜菜材料KWS8138、HI0466和有机氮低效基因型甜菜材料BETA176、T230苗期全株及根部有机氮利用效率(Organic Nitrogen Use Efficiency,ONUE)差异显著;之后通过田间试验对有机氮吸收效率(Organic Nitrogen Assimilation Efficiency,ONAE)做了进一步筛选,发现KWS8138不但对ONUE有显著优势,还具有较高的有机氮素吸收能力,包括苗期之后对土壤有机氮素的运转量较高,合理的根冠比等。有机氮低效基因型甜菜材料BETA176的有机氮素吸收利用能力很弱、氮素转运能力过低等限制了植株对有机氮素的合理利用,不利于有机氮效率的提高。因此确定KWS8138为有机氮高效基因型材料,BETA176为有机氮低效基因型材料,均可作为进一步试验的材料。有机氮高效基因型甜菜较高的土壤有机氮转运量及合理的根冠比促进了其对有机氮素的吸收,是有机氮高效的基础。较高的干物质生产效率反应了甜菜对有机氮素的高效利用,是有机氮高效的关键。  相似文献

目的:研究药剂科积极参与下中西药联合使用对消化内科患者用药合理性的影响。方法:选取我院2014年1月至2015年12月收治且确诊为消化性疾病患者184例,通过随机数表法将患者平均分为对照组和实验组,对照组给予临床常规中西药联合治疗,观察并统计临床反应;实验组给予中西药联合治疗,由本院药剂科参与人员、临床医师联合管理。统计并分析两组疗效、用药合理性及不良反应。结果:对照组总有效率为82.60%,明显低于实验组的94.56%(X~2=5.944,p=0.015);对照组用药合理率为77.17%,明显低于实验组的89.13%(X~2=5.102,p=0.024);对照组不良反应合理率为61.96%,明显低于实验组的88.04%(X~2=18.026,p0.001)。结论:药剂科的积极参与提高了中西药联合使用对消化内科患者的疗效,也降低了不良反应的发生率。  相似文献
