Local adaptation of parasites to their sympatric hosts has been investigated on different biological systems through reciprocal transplant experiments. Most of these studies revealed a local adaptation of the parasite. In several cases, however, parasites were found to be locally maladapted or neither adapted nor maladapted. In the present paper, we try to determine the causes of such variability in these results. We analyse a host–parasite metapopulation model and study the effect of several factors on the emergence of local adaptation: population sizes, mutation rates and migration rates for both the host and the parasite, and parasite generation time. We show that all these factors may act on local adaptation through their effects on the evolutionary potential of each species. In particular, we find that higher numbers of mutants or migrants do, in general, promote local adaptation. Interestingly, shorter parasite generation time does not always favour parasite local adaptation. When genetic variability is limiting, shorter generation time, via an increase of the strength of selection, decreases the capacity of the parasite to adapt to an evolving host. 相似文献

Geographic and interannual variability of the number of annuli and the radius of the first scale annulus, as well as the retrospective length of year-old walleye pollock from the western, northern, and eastern parts of the Bering Sea, was examined using data for the years 1995, 1996, 1998, and 1999. The characteristics of the first scale annulus were varying. By these parameters, walleye pollock from the western Bering Sea significantly differs statistically from walleye pollock of the eastern Bering Sea. With respect to number of annuli, the radius of the first ring, and the retrospective length of year-old specimens, the walleye pollock from the Navarinskii region occupies an intermediate position between fish from the western and eastern parts of the Bering Sea. Abstract. Species pools are increasingly recognized as important controls of local plant community structure and diversity. While existing approaches to estimate their content and size either rely on phytosociological expert knowledge or on simple response models across environmental gradients, the proposed application of phytosociological smoothing according to Beals exploits the full information of plant co‐occurrence patterns statistically. Where numerous representative compositional data are available, the new method yields robust estimates of the potential of sites to harbour plant species. To test the new method, a large phytosociological databank covering the forested regions of Oregon (US) was subsampled randomly and evenly across strata defined by geographic regions and elevation belts. The resulting matrix of species presence/absence in 874 plots was smoothed by calculating Beals' index of sociological favourability, which estimates the probability of encountering each species at each site from the actual plot composition and the pattern of species co‐occurrence in the matrix. In a second step, the resulting lists of sociologically probable species were intersected with complete species lists for each of 14 geographical subregions. Species pools were compared to observed species composition and richness. Species pool size exhibited much clearer spatial trends than plot richness and could be modelled much better as a function of climatic factors. In this framework the goal of modelling species pools is not to test a hypothesis, but to bridge the gap between manageable scales of empirical observation and the spatio‐temporal hierarchy of diversity patterns. 相似文献

Winter survival is an important characteristic of oilseedBrassica that is seeded in the fall in northern climates,and it may be affected by genetic variation for other cold-regulated traits,such as freezing tolerance and vernalization responsive flowering time. Weanalyzed immortalized populations of oilseed Brassica rapa(recombinant inbred lines) and B. napus (double haploidlines) derived from crosses of annual and biennial types in order to comparethe map positions and effects of quantitative trait loci controlling wintersurvival, nonacclimated and acclimated freezing tolerances, and flowering time.The B. napus population was evaluated in multiple winters,and six of the 16 total significant QTL for winter survival were detected inmore than one winter. Correspondence in the map positions of QTL controllingdifferent traits within species provided evidence that some alleles causinggreater acclimated freezing tolerance and later flowering time also contributedto increased winter survival. Correspondence in the map positions of QTLbetween species provided evidence for allelic variation at homologous loci inB. rapa and B. napus. The potentialrole of some candidate genes in regulating these traits is discussed. 相似文献

The problem of scale has three components: (a) direct measurement is usually confined to small areas and brief periods, (b)
the most pressing issues occur at the scale of ecosystems and decades, but (c) direct scale-up fails when pattern and process
at small scales differ from those at larger scales. Recognition of this dilemma has grown exponentially since around 1980.
The problem of scale is particularly acute for seabirds, which inhabit one of the most extensive habitats on the planet—the
surface of the ocean. The application of power laws is a promising solution to the problem. Power laws have a long empirical
tradition, are readily estimated from data, and now have a theoretical basis. Power law behavior (with nonintegral exponents)
appears in systems with episodically warring exponential rates. In marine ornithology, examples of areas where power laws
can be applied include patchy spatial distributions, the association of predator with prey, the scaling of food intake to
body size, and fractal habitat structure. Scaling theory and power laws are applicable to a wide variety of ecosystem phenomena
and dynamics, including fluxes of material and energy.

Local niche complementarity among species (the partitioning of species based upon niche differentiation) is predicted to affect local ecosystem functioning positively. However, recent theory predicts that greater local diversity may hinder local ecosystem functioning when diversity is enhanced through source–sink dynamics. We suggest community assembly as a way to incorporate both the local and regional processes that determine biodiversity and its consequent effects on ecosystem functioning. From this, we propose a hump-shaped relationship between diversity and ecosystem functioning at local scales, but a linear increase of functioning with diversity at regional scales due to regional complementarity. 相似文献

Documented demographic bottlenecks resultingfrom introductions of the dice snake to severallakes in Switzerland provide a rare opportunityto study the effect of serial bottlenecks onthe genetic properties of Natrixtessellata populations. We investigated twointroduced populations using informationderived from eight microsatellite markers. Bothintroduced populations had significantlyreduced levels of allelic diversity relative tonon-bottlenecked populations. We investigated the effect of an injected bolus of 5 mg kg- heparin at one circadian stage (08:30 to 11:00) on blood coagulation during different months of the year. Activated clotting times (ACTs) were assessed before and 5 min after heparin dosing to ensure extracorporeal circulation during open-heart surgery. The ACT data of 1083 presumably day-active Turkish patients (816 men and 267 women, mostly older than 46 years) who underwent coronary bypass surgery between 08:30 and 11:00 in the years from 1994 to 1997 were analyzed for annual rhythmicity. The ACT values obtained just before and 5 min after heparinization were subjected to cosinor analysis using a 365.25-day period to assess seasonality in basal ACT level and heparin effect. A small-amplitude annual rhythm with a wintertime peak was documented in the morning ACT in the group of 1083 patients. Rhythms of similar magnitude and staging were also detected in heparin effect on ACT in the 1083 patients and in subgroups categorized by gender. Circannual rhythmicity in the heparin effect on ACT was also documented in the elderly (≥ 45 years old), but not young (18-45 years old) patients. The annual mean effect of heparin on the ACT was statistically significantly greater in younger than older patients. The relatively low-amplitude circannual rhythm in heparin effect on ACT (∼10% of the annual mean) is not viewed as being meaningful in patient preparation for bypass surgery for the 5 mg kg-1 level of heparin dosing. 设计了垂直平板定时转动培养方法暗培养丛枝菌根真菌(Gigaspora margarita Becker & Hall)孢子,发现培养基上生长的营养菌丝较少分枝,培养基转动前后生长的菌丝之间有一明显的折点,定时转动所形成的众多折点将延伸菌丝分成若干个节段,使形成的菌丝面局限在易观察的小范围内。此法是诱导菌丝定向生长、测量菌丝长度和生长速度的好方法,为菌丝理化特性和生物学特性的研究提供了实验依据。活跃生长的菌丝,每天生长7.7±0.9mm。试验证明:丛枝菌根真菌菌丝延伸生长部位是菌丝尖端,其生长的向地性是对地心引力的感应,感应的敏感部位也在生长菌丝的尖端。 相似文献
