In this study, two forest sites located in Finland were compared by means of predictions of Gini coefficient (GC) obtained from airborne laser scanning (ALS). We discuss the potential of the proposed method for identifying differences in structural complexity in relation with the management history of forests. The first study site (2200 ha), the Koli National Park (NP), includes areas where human intervention was restricted after 1907, in addition to forests which were protected only after the 1990s. The second study site in the municipality of Kiihtelysvaara (800 ha) has been under intensive management. These are commercial forests which include areas with different types of ownership: a large estate owned by an industrial company together with smaller private properties. We observed that GC predictions may be used to evaluate the effects of management practice on forest structure. Conservation and commercial forests showed significant differences, with the old-protected area of Koli having the highest, and the most intensively managed area in Kiihtelysvaara the lowest GC values. The effect of management history was revealed, as the 1990s’ extensions of Koli NP were more similar to unprotected areas than to forests contained within the original borders of the 1907s’ state property. Yet, their conservation status for almost two decades has been sufficient for developing significant differences against the outside of the NP. In Kiihtelysvaara, we found significant differences in GC according to the type of ownership. Moreover, the ALS predictions of GC also detected differences near lakeshores, which are driven by limitations on logging governed by Finnish law. Estimating this indicator with ALS remote sensing allowed to observe its spatial distribution and to detect peculiarities which would otherwise be unavailable from field plot sampling. Consequently, the method presented appears to be well suited for monitoring the effects of management practice, as well as verifying its compliance with legal restrictions.  相似文献

Pinsapo fir (Abies pinsapo Boiss.) is an endangered Mediterranean conifer that has raised strong conservation interest as a paradigmatic example of species characterized by small and fragmented populations. We studied an old reforestation stand composed of A. pinsapo, Pinus nigra and Pinus sylvestris established in the 1910s in central-eastern Spain (about 500 km north of the species native distribution range), with the aim of evaluating the stand’s suitability as an ex situ conservation unit for the fir. To this end, we investigated the long-term performance of the stand and assessed genetic diversity of A. pinsapo. Tree-ring width (TRW) and carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C) were used to characterise growth dynamics and intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi), respectively. Furthermore, 42 pinsapo firs were genotyped at five microsatellite loci to compare their genetic variation with published data on natural populations. A. pinsapo showed ca. two-fold higher radial growth than pines in the last 80 years; however, a growth decrease was observed for all species from the 1990s onwards. Indexed TRW was positively associated with Δ13C at the species level, denoting inter-annual growth dependence on water availability. Overall, Δ13C was higher for A. pinsapo compared to pines, indicating lower WUEi, but Δ13C significantly decreased over the last 50 years for all species, likely as the result of tighter stomatal regulation of water loss, resulting in WUEi increases of about 25 %. Recently, however, A. pinsapo showed reduced WUEi increase in concord with growth slowdown, suggesting a threshold response for stomatal regulation. Although genetic diversity of A. pinsapo was about half of natural populations, the old-planted stand could be important for the conservation of this endemic species considering its good long-term growth and physiology. The latest decrease in performance of A. pinsapo, however, asks for urgent management measures aimed at reducing the competition for water and promoting growth and natural regeneration. This study illustrates the potential of combining tree-ring-based long-term physiological information with genetic data to ascertain the prospects of artificial stands for conservation purposes.  相似文献

Pinus Massoniana is the most widely distributed coniferous species in southern China and one of the most distributed species for plantation in China. It is not uncertain about the responses of tree growth to the combined effects of regional drying and the increase in the intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) due to increased atmospheric CO2. This study addressed this issue by comparing the tree growth patterns as represented by three tree-ring width chronologies with climate variables and three iWUE series derived from three tree-ring stable carbon isotope discrimination chronologies (Δ13C) from Pinus Massoniana in Daiyun Mountain, central Fujian province of China. Among these chronologies, we reported the first tree-ring carbon isotope discrimination chronologies (Δ13C) from Fuzhou area spanning last 210 years. It was found that tree radial growth is mainly limited by dry condition from May to October. Growth limitation by cold condition was only found in one high altitude site (780m) in early spring and late autumn. The tree-ring carbon discrimination was enhanced under conditions with low relative humidity and sufficient sunshine in late summer and autumn. In general, the iWUE showed a significantly increasing trend since the 1850s for all the sites in response to the increase in atmospheric CO2. However, the growth promotion of the increased iWUE on tree growth could not compensate the growth limitation caused by drought. Especially since the 1960s, a growth decline was found at two drought stressed sites at low altitudes. On the other hand, the increase in temperature of spring and autumn and iWUE has most likely enhanced tree growth at the high altitude site.  相似文献

The availability of whole-genome data has created the extraordinary opportunity to reconstruct in fine details the 'tree of life'. The application of such comprehensive effort promises to unravel the enigmatic evolutionary relationships between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Traditionally, biologists have represented the evolutionary relationships of all organisms by a bifurcating phylogenetic tree. But recent analyses of completely sequenced genomes using conditioned reconstruction (CR), a newly developed gene-content algorithm, suggest that a cycle graph or 'ring' rather than a 'tree' is a better representation of the evolutionary relationships between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. CR is the first phylogenetic-reconstruction method to provide precise evidence about the origin of the eukaryotes. This review summarizes how the CR analyses of complete genomes provide evidence for a fusion origin of the eukaryotes.  相似文献

Browsing by livestock has been identified as an important factor preventing tree regeneration in wooded pastures. Two field experiments were performed to investigate the effects of cattle browsing on tree sapling growth in a mountain-wooded pasture. Two size classes (ca. 12–17 cm and 41–59 cm) of each of 4 species (Picea abies, Abies alba, Acer pseudoplatanus and Fagus sylvatica) were exposed to zero, low and high grazing intensities. We measured the proportion of saplings browsed and the effect of browsing on growth. A mowing treatment within the zero grazing intensity treatment showed no significant effect on sapling growth. One percent of the large saplings but 25% of the small saplings escaped browsing. Saplings were better protected when surrounded by taller vegetation. The proportion of saplings browsed was not significantly different among species although evergreen tree saplings lost a larger proportion of biomass than deciduous species when browsed. Under grazing, average current-year shoot production and total aboveground biomass of all species were significantly reduced. Browsing effects tended to be smaller at the lower grazing intensity. Because the deciduous species were least reduced in aboveground growth, especially under the low grazing intensity, we conclude that at least in short-term, deciduous species are less affected by cattle browsing.  相似文献

From 1999 to 2003, a range of carbon fluxes was measured and integrated to establish a carbon balance for a natural evergreen forest of Castanopsis kawakamii (NF) and adjacent monoculture evergreen plantations of C. kawakamii (CK) and Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata, CF) in Sanming Nature Reserve, Fujian, China. Biomass carbon increment of aboveground parts and coarse roots were measured by the allometric method. Above- and belowground litter C inputs were assessed by litter traps and sequential cores, respectively. Soil respiration (SR) was determined by the alkaline absorbance method, and the contribution from roots, above- and belowground litters was separated by the DIRT plots. Annual SR averaged 13.742 t C ha−1 a−1 in the NF, 9.439 t C ha−1 a−1 in the CK, and 4.543 t C ha−1 a−1 in the CF. For all forests, SR generally peaked in later spring or early summer (May or June). The contribution of root respiration ranged from 47.8% in the NF to 40.3% in the CF. On average, soil heterotrophic respiration (HR) was evenly distributed between below- (47.3∼54.5%) and aboveground litter (45.5%–52.7%). Annual C inputs (t C ha−1 a−1) from litterfall and root turnover averaged 4.452 and 4.295, 4.548 and 2.313, and 2.220 and 1.265, respectively, in the NF, CK, and CF. As compared to HR, annual net primary production (NPP) of 11.228, 13.264, and 6.491 t C ha−1 a−1 in the NF, CK, and CF brought a positive net ecosystem production (NEP) of 4.144, 7.514, and 3.677 t C ha−1 a−1, respectively. It suggests that native forest in subtropical China currently acts as an important carbon sink just as the timber plantation does, and converting native forest to tree plantations locally during last decades might have caused a high landscape carbon loss to the atmosphere.  相似文献

树鼩作为多种人类疾病研究模型的可能性已受到广泛关注,但尚缺乏研究其免疫功能的基本标志以及单克隆抗体。该实验首先以树鼩外周血总RNA为材料,通过RT-PCR扩增得到长度为1365bp的树鼩CD4全长编码序列,并确定了数据库中缺失的两个片段,进而通过ClustalW等软件对其序列和分子特征进行分析,发现树鼩CD4氨基酸序列胞外和胞内域保守性较好,且与人类和猴的亲缘关系较近。虽然树鼩和人CD4分子表面大部分区域均带正电荷,但与人CD4胞外域D1相比,树鼩CD4D1结构区域表面带负电荷较多,且多出两个N-糖基化位点。这些差异对抗体的结合可能存在影响。该研究为今后树鼩CD4单克隆抗体制备及功能研究奠定了基础。  相似文献
