Knowledge of the larval ecology of winter-spawning fish from the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada, remains scarce due to the seasonal ice cover that prevents ichthyoplankton sampling using conventional methods. Two winter-spawning species, Atlantic halibut (AH, Hippoglossus hippoglossus) and Greenland halibut (GH, Reinhardtius hippoglossoides), support the most important groundfish fisheries of this area. In March 2020, the authors captured 10 halibut larvae ranging in size from 5 to 14 mm during an opportunistic survey in the GSL onboard an icebreaking vessel. Of these, eight were AH and two GH. Judging by their very small size, the larvae were only a few days old, suggesting that the spawning grounds are close to the capture sites. This effort constitutes a first step in validating the putative spawning areas for these two important GSL stocks. This knowledge is important for the conservation and sustainable management of these fisheries.  相似文献

It has been well documented that animals (and machines) swimming or flying near a solid boundary get a boost in performance. This ground effect is often modelled as an interaction between a mirrored pair of vortices represented by a true vortex and an opposite sign ‘virtual vortex’ on the other side of the wall. However, most animals do not swim near solid surfaces and thus near body vortex–vortex interactions in open-water swimmers have been poorly investigated. In this study, we examine the most energetically efficient metazoan swimmer known to date, the jellyfish Aurelia aurita, to elucidate the role that vortex interactions can play in animals that swim away from solid boundaries. We used high-speed video tracking, laser-based digital particle image velocimetry (dPIV) and an algorithm for extracting pressure fields from flow velocity vectors to quantify swimming performance and the effect of near body vortex–vortex interactions. Here, we show that a vortex ring (stopping vortex), created underneath the animal during the previous swim cycle, is critical for increasing propulsive performance. This well-positioned stopping vortex acts in the same way as a virtual vortex during wall-effect performance enhancement, by helping converge fluid at the underside of the propulsive surface and generating significantly higher pressures which result in greater thrust. These findings advocate that jellyfish can generate a wall-effect boost in open water by creating what amounts to a ‘virtual wall’ between two real, opposite sign vortex rings. This explains the significant propulsive advantage jellyfish possess over other metazoans and represents important implications for bio-engineered propulsion systems.  相似文献

Conservation of water under semi-arid conditions is of supreme importance to combat forthcoming water scarcity. Crop residue mulches are the key interventions in this regard. Simulation models are emerging as strong analytical tools to study the effect of agronomic interventions but their use to study effect of mulches in Austria is limited. To bridge this knowledge gap, we planned a study to evaluate the efficacy of CropSyst for studying response of lucerne mulches in succeeding lucerne crop. CropSyst is a user-friendly, conceptually simple but sound multi-year multi-crop daily time step simulation model. Above ground biomass and soil water content from field experiments carried out near the city of Vienna, Austria (2007–2008) were compared with simulated results to determine the suitability of CropSyst in regarding mulch. Adequacy of model to regard mulch is demonstrated while pros and cons of disagreement between experimental and modeling results are discussed with a way forward for future research.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Long-term monitoring programs must use informative yet cost-effective methods. Occupancy estimates that incorporate detection probabilities are used with increasing frequency to describe species status and make management recommendations. Estimating changes in the occupancy of points over time in response to management actions or environmental changes may be especially useful for management of the Palm Springs round-tailed ground squirrel (Spermophilus tereticaudus chlorus), a subspecies covered under the Coachella Valley Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan and Natural Community Conservation Plan. In 2002 and 2003, we estimated occupancy and detection probability of ground squirrels across lands modeled as ground squirrel habitat by the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Habitat Conservation Plan and tested a priori hypotheses about how occupancy varied among vegetation and substrate types. In the 2003 study, we asked whether these associations were affected by winter rains after the 2002 drought year. Occupancy in 2003 was estimated at 0.99 (SE = 0.01) in Western honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) on dunes and hummocks, and occupancy of the remaining modeled habitat was best described by distance to mesquite, with the occupancy probability decreasing with increasing distance from mesquite on dunes or hummocks. The best-supported model in 2002 described the distribution of ground squirrels as a function of only vegetation and substrate type. However, the best-supported models in 2003 suggested that distance to mesquite was a component of the occupancy of non-mesquite vegetation. Mesquite seems to provide high-quality habitat that can support ground squirrels at high occupancy probabilities that may breed successfully every year. In contrast, other vegetation types provide low-quality habitat that can only support ground squirrels at low occupancy probabilities that may only breed occasionally. Mesquite could be an essential refugium during drought years, and the 4 best-supported models in 2003 suggest that restoration of mesquite beginning near currently occupied mesquite patches could be critical for maintaining ground squirrel populations on the preserves.  相似文献

Six infant squirrel monkeys were reared in social isolation. They responded differentially to playbacks of two species-specific alarm calls. The reaction to the alarm peep, the warning call to bird predators, was a prompt flight to the mother surrogate and essentially resembled the respective behavior of mother-reared infants. The responses to yapping, the alarm call to terrestrial predators, were less clear-cut and habituated soon. However, when yapping was played back in connection with the presentation of a reference object, both subjects tested in this way clearly avoided the object and preferred contact with the mother surrogate while they thoroughly explored an object presented with a control tone. From this it can be concluded that the perception of both alarm calls is innate. In addition, the method of behavior-contingent playback of vocalizations simulates the learning process by which the visual perception of terrestrial predators of the habitat is acquired.  相似文献

The molecular geometry, spectral luminescence properties, proton acceptor ability during the formation of H bonded complexes and monocation formation have been studied for a series of the new near-UV efficient laser dyes: 1,2,5-triphenyltriazole-1,3,4 (TPT) derivatives. It has been shown that the initial proton attachment to TPT molecules is directed to the triazole cycle imine nitrogen atom. The possible reason for the observed abnormally high fluorescence Stokes shifts typical of TPT neutral and cationic forms is discussed. The static mechanism has been demonstrated for TPT fluorescence quenching in acidic media.  相似文献

1. Plants take nutrients for their growth and reproduction from not only soil but also symbiotic microbes in the rhizosphere, and therefore below‐ground microbes may indirectly influence the above‐ground arthropod community through changes in the quality and quantity of plants. 2. Rhizobia are root‐nodulating bacteria that provide NH4+ to legume plants. We examined bottom‐up effects of rhizobia on the community properties of the arthropods on host plants, using a root‐nodulating soybean strain (R+) and a non‐nodulating strain (R?) in a common garden. 3. R+ plants grew larger and produced a greater number of leaves than R? plants. We observed 28 species of herbivores and three taxonomic groups of predators on R+ and R? plants. The herbivorous species were classified into sap feeders (12 species) and chewers (16 species). 4. The species richness of overall herbivores, sap feeders, and chewers on R+ plants was greater than that on R? plants. Rhizobia positively affected the abundance of chewers. 5. The community composition of herbivores was significantly different between R? and R+ plants, although species diversity and evenness did not differ. 6. Rhizobia‐induced bottom‐up effects were transmitted to the third trophic level. The abundance, taxonomic richness, and diversity of the predators on R+ plants were greater but evenness was lower than those on R? plants. The community composition of predators was not affected by rhizobia. 7. These results indicate that the below‐ground microbes initiated bottom‐up effects on above‐ground herbivores and predators through trophic levels.  相似文献

This paper deals with the functioning and malfunctioning of maternal behavior in relation to external and social conditions. During developmental studies in captive squirrel monkey groups, 49 mother-infant pairs were observed. There were several cases of maternal inadequacy subsequent to (1) postnatal transportation, (2) exaggerated social investigation by immatures,and (3) premature allomothering. Brief mother-infant separations by humans did not yield such failures. One female consistently prevented nursing with at least three of her five viable offspring. Complete or partial failure of maternal behavior did not preclude subsequent recovery and/or adequate allomothering. Dedicated to Prof. Dr. Med.
