The intensity of selection exerted by brood parasites on their hosts depends on the proportion of nests that are parasitized and the fitness costs of parasitism. Nest detection by brood parasites influences the probability of parasitism, and we propose that the difficulty faced by brood parasites of finding nests on the ground may make ground‐nesting species subject to lower levels of parasitism, causing a reduction in levels of defence compared with species breeding in shrubs, trees and elsewhere above the ground. We tested the prediction that the rejection rate of Common Cuckoo Cuculus canorus eggs by hosts is inversely related to the frequency with which they build nests on the ground, both at local and at continental scales. First, we used estimates of the rejection rate of non‐mimetic model eggs experimentally introduced into the nests of 26 potential host species breeding in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of southern Spain. Most species tested in the Sierra Nevada showed high rejection rates of both mimetic and non‐mimetic eggs, whereas the European Robin Erithacus rubecula, with a low rejection rate, was the only species that was regularly parasitized. At the continental scale we used all available published information on rejection rates of non‐mimetic models by European hosts of the Common Cuckoo. The frequency of ground‐nesting explained interspecific variation in rejection rate of non‐mimetic model eggs both for the species tested in the Sierra Nevada and for all European hosts after controlling for all other life‐history variables known to affect rejection rates. An effect of the abundance of trees in a particular habitat, previously shown to affect parasitism by the Common Cuckoo, was only apparent from analyses of continental‐scale data and not from the Sierra Nevada mountains, suggesting that particular properties of mountainous areas affect Common Cuckoo parasitism. Ground‐nesting species showed lower rejection rates than species breeding in bushes or trees. These results suggest that species nesting on the ground may have suffered lower parasitism pressures in their historical coevolutionary interactions with the Common Cuckoo.  相似文献

Physical disturbance, such as falling debris, is an important cause of mortality to rain forest seedlings. I used artificial seedlings to quantify physical disturbance in a rain forest at the Crater Mountain Biological Research Station in Papua New Guinea. Single (N= 418) and clustered artificial seedlings (N= 428) were placed on eight transects spanning varied topography to assess the area's disturbance regime, to test if ground slope affected disturbance, and to test if clustering affected the incidence of damage. Two transects showed a significant departure from random in the spatial distribution of damaged seedlings within the transect, suggesting that some areas of experience more disturbance than others. Artificial seedlings on level ground experienced damage less often than artificial seedlings on slopes; disturbance increased with ground slope. Artificial seedlings in dry washes experienced the greatest probability of damage. Artificial seedlings in clusters experienced significantly less damage than single ones, suggesting clustered seedlings might be less vulnerable to damage than lone seedlings. The disturbance rate at this site (34.7% damaged in one year) was markedly lower than that measured at the La Selva Biological Reserve in Costa Rica (82.4%).  相似文献

Three new trechine species of the genus Pilosaphaenops Deuve & Tian, 2008, P. qianzhii n. sp. from cave Lubian Dong in Pingtang County, southern Guizhou Province, P. mengzhenae n. sp. and P. weiguofui n. sp. from cave Xia Dong in Nandan County, and cave Shenlong Gong in Huanjiang County respectively, northern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, are described and illustrated. A key to all known species of this genus is also provided.

Abstract

To determine what environmental factor is the Zeitgeber for the annual change in mass, California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi) were exposed to several regimes of temperature and length of day. The squirrels were captured when age 4–5 months, kept individually in cages with excess food and nesting material. The temperature was varied with a 6‐month phase shift (SH). The length of day was the same as Santa Barbara (SB) or 6‐month phase shift (SH). The light was provided by cool white bulbs at 10–600 lux.

The first experiment consisted of keeping squirrels at either SB or SH length of day and at constant temperature (20°) for three years and then changing to SH temperature for 3 years. None entrained although at age 6, 2 might be entrained. The second experiment repeated the first except that the SH temperature started at age zero. None has entrained by age 5. None of a third group, placed at SH temperature and SB length of day, has entrained by age 3. The conclusion is that these regimes of temperature and length of day, which resemble natural conditions, do not entrain the annual change of mass.  相似文献

Mechanical loading of the spine has been shown to be an important risk factor for the development of low-back pain. Inertial motion capture (IMC) systems might allow measuring lumbar moments in realistic working conditions, and thus support evaluation of measures to reduce mechanical loading. As the number of sensors limits applicability, the objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the number of sensors on estimates of L5S1 moments.Hand forces, ground reaction forces (GRF) and full-body kinematics were measured using a gold standard (GS) laboratory setup. In the ambulatory setup, hand forces were estimated based on the force plates measured GRF and body kinematics that were measured using (subsets of) an IMC system. Using top-down inverse dynamics, L5S1 flexion/extension moments were calculated.RMSerrors (Nm) were lowest (16.6) with the full set of 17 sensors and increased to 20.5, 22 and 30.6, for 8, 6 and 4 sensors. Absolute errors in peak moments (Nm) ranged from 17.7 to 16.4, 16.9 and 49.3 Nm, for IMC setup’s with 17, 8, 6 and 4 sensors, respectively. When horizontal GRF were neglected for 6 sensors, RMSerrors and peak moment errors decreased from 22 to 17.3 and from 16.9 to 13 Nm, respectively.In conclusion, while reasonable moment estimates can be obtained with 6 sensors, omitting the forearm sensors led to unacceptable errors. Furthermore, vertical GRF information is sufficient to estimate L5S1 moments in lifting.  相似文献

Fetal squirrel monkeys of Bolivian and Colombian origin were exposed to 100 rad cobalt-60 radiation in utero and carried to term by the dams. Body weight, head circumference, crown–rump length, and food intake were measured during the first 28 postnatal days. Significant subspecies differences were noted in both mothers and offspring, the Colombian squirrel monkeys being generally larger than the Bolivians. The irradiated offspring weighed significantly less, had significantly smaller crania, and consumed significantly less food than control animals. A statistically nonsignificant decrement was also evident in the crown–rump length of radiation-treated infants.  相似文献

Question: Can prescribed winter burning compensate atmospheric nutrient loads for dry heathlands? What effects does prescribed burning have on nutrient balances, particularly as regards the limiting nutrients N and P? Location: Lueneburg Heath, NW Germany. Methods: In two burning experiments (in 10/15 year old Calluna‐stands) nutrient balances (for N, Ca, K, Mg, P) were calculated by analysing nutrient inputs (atmospheric deposition, ash deposition), nutrient stores (above‐ground biomass, organic horizon) and nutrient outputs (biomass combustion, leaching). Results: Atmospheric nutrient deposition amounted to 22.8 kg.ha‐1.a‐1 for N and < 0.5 kg.ha‐1.a‐1 for P. Nutrient stores in the above‐ground biomass were 95/197 kg.ha‐1 for N and 5/13 kg.ha‐1 for P (first/second experiment, respectively). From these stores 90/53% (for N) and 25/14% (for P) were removed by burning. Effects of leaching on nutrient balances were low. In the first two years after burning, leaching rates of N increased by about 4/6 kg.ha‐1, whereas leaching rates of P did not change significantly. Input/output‐ratios showed that prescribed burning leads to positive nutrient balances for N, Ca and Mg in the long term. For example, the amounts of N removed by prescribed burning are equivalent to ca. five years of atmospheric inputs. Applied in ten‐year cycles, this measure alone cannot prevent N accumulation in the long term. Conclusion: Regarding 10/15 year old Calluna‐heaths, we assume that prescribed burning cannot compensate for atmospheric N inputs, thus making long‐term changes in the nutritional state inevitable. Therefore, prescribed burning should be applied in combination with high‐intensity management measures.  相似文献

The Delmarva fox squirrel, Sciurus niger cinereus, is a federally listed endangered subspecies whose range has been reduced by 90%. In an attempt to increase both population size and range, translocation sites were established beginning in the 1960's by moving squirrels from the natural range to sites outside the current range. Although translocations have served as the primary component of the DFS recovery program, there has been very little post-release examination of the genetics of the translocation sites. In this study, we developed ten microsatellite loci, screened the three polymorphic loci, and sequenced a 330 bp fragment of the mitochondrial control region in order to assess levels of genetic variation in natural and translocated regions of Delmarva fox squirrels and to compare them to Southeastern fox squirrels (S. n. niger). Although we found low levels of microsatellite polymorphism, there were no differences in heterozygosity between natural and translocated regions, or between Delmarva and Southeastern fox squirrels. We found high levels of polymorphism in the mitochondrial control region. Our patterns of haplotype diversity suggest incomplete lineage sorting of the two subspecies. In general, our data suggest that the current levels of genetic variation in the translocated sites are representative of those found in the natural population, and we encourage the continued use of translocations as a major component of Delmarva fox squirrel recovery.
