Here we report on 16 microsatellite loci designed for the damselfish Dascyllus aruanus. All loci were tested on 98 individuals and were polymorphic (seven to 35 alleles). Expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.705 to 0.942. Six loci showed Hardy-Weinberg disequilibrium due to the occurrence of null alleles. Cross-species amplifications conducted within the genus Dascyllus (D. carneus, D. strasburgi, D. trimaculatus) lead to polymorphic fragments in 32 out of 48 tests. These 16 loci will enable future research into the behavioural ecology and population ecology of Dascyllus aruanus throughout the Indo-Pacific. 相似文献

The ability of two common, site‐attached coral‐reef fishes to return to their home corals after displacement was investigated in a series of field experiments at One Tree Island, southern Great Barrier Reef. The humbug Dascyllus aruanus was displaced up to 250 m, with 42% of individuals returning home, irrespective of body size, displacement, direction (up or across currents) and route complexity, while for the lemon damselfish Pomacentrus moluccensis 35% of individuals returned overall, with 33% from the greatest displacement, 100 m along a reef edge. Given that the home range of both species is <1 m2, over their 10+ year life span, the mechanisms and motivations for such homing ability are unclear but it may allow resilience if fishes are displaced by storm events, allowing rapid return to home corals. 相似文献

A very distinct semilunar spawning cycle was found in a population of the damselfish Dascyllus aruanus on the coral reefs of Sesoko Island, Okinawa. Spawning occurred from June to September, only in the early morning, during
a period of 2–4 days immediately before or around the time of the new and full moon. Males cared for the eggs deposited on
the substrate for 2.5 days until hatching. Hatching occurred just after sunset, i.e., at the high tide of spring tide; the
strong ebb current then would rapidly disperse the newly hatched larvae offshore. Females tended to synchronize spawning in
a male's nest, also because multiple clutches in a nest would be more likely to survive until hatching. Thus, the distinct
semilunar spawning cycle may favor females in reducing mortality of both eggs and larvae.

ABSTRACT When studying the acoustic signals of animals, it is often necessary to obtain the precise time structure of the frequency. It is also useful to extract the envelope of a signal or to modify a signal to obtain its frequency modulated part. This can be achieved digitally using the analytic signal concept. We deal here with the method. Definition and computation are described, its application is discussed and the performances are compared to those of sonagraph and zero- crossing methods. This paper presents a method enabling precise AM and FM analysis of different animal vocalisations. The method has also been used for the purpose of synthesis by extracting the frequency modulated part of a signal. It is found to be a powerful means of modifying some parameters of a natural signal without altering other features. 相似文献

We studied the diel timing of spawning in the demersally spawning Hawaiian damselfish, Dascyllus albisella, from mid-June to late-September 1997 at two small patch reefs in Hawaii. Our objectives were to elucidate daily timing of spawning in relation to water temperature, diel timing of hatching, and short-period spawning synchrony. Spawning occurred every 5–7 days at both reefs, with all spawning on a reef concluded either within a single day (1-day spawning) or within two successive days (2-day spawning). Spawning began in early morning and continued for most of the day. There was a significant, positive linear relationship between mean daily average water temperature (= daily average temperature averaged over the period starting from the day following the last spawning day of the preceding nest cycle till the day before the first spawning day of the current cycle) and peak spawning hour of day, for 1-day spawning, and the first and second days of 2-day spawning at both reefs. The relationship between mean daily average water temperature and peak spawning hour of day was comparable among all spawning-day classes and reefs. Hatching occurred on the fourth day of development throughout the study despite the 26.5–29.1°C change in water temperature during the study period, and hatching was restricted to within two hours after sunset. We propose that D. albisella's peak spawning time is positively correlated with increased water temperature because it maintains the benefits of synchronous spawning within two constraints: the narrow daily period of hatching, and the inverse relationship between water temperature and embryo developmental time. 相似文献

Two Dascyllus reticulatus populations from Madang, Papua New Guinea exhibited diandric protogyny. In both populations, gonads began as undifferentiated, and then developed oocytes in the primary growth stage and an ovarian lumen. From this ovarian state or from more developed ovaries containing oocytes beyond the primary‐growth stage, some gonads developed into testes. The first sign of testicular development was degeneration of oocytes, degeneration of oocytes in the primary growth stage in ovarian gonads and degeneration of oocytes of all growth stages present including the primary growth stage in ovaries, which was then followed by development of spermatogenic tissue. In both populations, most of the fish that had gonads with degenerating oocytes were smaller than the smallest mature females, indicating that development towards testes was mostly initiated in immature gonads containing only pre‐vitellogenic oocytes. On some occasions, however, females as large as other mature females also had gonads with degenerating oocytes, suggesting that development towards testes may have occurred in mature ovaries as well. This latter notion is further strengthened by the discovery of a fish having a gonad that contained both degenerating vitellogenic oocytes and developing spermatogenic tissue. Taken together, these results suggest that D. reticulatus can exhibit diandric protogyny, because testes in D. reticulatus developed from juvenile gonads as well as from mature ovaries. 相似文献

Settlement and recruitment of three damselfish species: larval delivery and competition for shelter space 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Spatial patterns of settlement and abundance of older life stages were examined for three species of damselfish in the genus
Dascyllus by monitoring natural colonization of standard amounts of initially empty juvenile microhabitat (anemones for D. trimaculatus; branching coral for D. flavicaudus and D. aruanus) transplanted to a series of sites within lagoons of Moorea, French Polynesia. Large spatial differences in larval colonization
were observed, which were temporally consistent but different among the species. At the whole-island scale, D. trimaculatus settled primarily on the northern shore, while settlement of the other two species was greatest at the southern end. The
three species also showed different patterns of settlement within lagoons: D. aruanus settled mainly nearer to shore, D. flavicaudus primarily on offshore lagoon portions and D. trimaculatus colonized equally across the lagoons. Among sites around the island, the relative abundance of older juveniles after 10 months
was a curvilinear function of the relative abundance of settlers for two species (D. trimaculatus and D. flavicaudus). There was no relationship between patterns of settlement and abundance of older juveniles for D. aruanus, although juvenile abundance was inversely related to that of juvenile D. flavicaudus. At the within-lagoon scale, settlement mirrored almost exactly the relative abundance of older lifestages of D. trimaculatus and D. flavicaudus, whereas there was just a qualitative match for D. aruanus. A competition experiment revealed that juvenile D. flavicaudus had a greater effect on population growth of D. aruanus than vice versa, and this mechanism helped explain why the modification of settlement patterns was greatest in D. aruanus. Interspecific variation in abundance of older stages was shaped to differing extents by both patterns of larval delivery
and subsequent density-dependent processes involving competition for shelter space.

Gonadal development and non-functional protogyny in a coral-reef damselfish, Dascyllus albisella Gill 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
All gonads of the Hawaiian dascyllus Dascyllus albisella , irrespective of the final sex of individuals, developed an ovarian lumen and primary-growth-stage oocytes after an initially undifferentiated state. From this ovarian state or from more differentiated ovaries, some gonads redifferentiated into testes. None of 117 individuals examined had a gonad containing degenerating vitellogenic oocytes and proliferating spermatogenic tissue. Eleven individuals had gonads containing degenerating cortical-alveolus-stage oocytes and developing spermatogenic tissue. The size of these individuals overlapped with the female size range in which the majority of the females were still in the middle of the maturation process. They were absent from the larger size range where the majority of females had vitellogenic oocytes. This indicated that the transition toward maleness is likely to have occurred after the onset of cortical-alveolus stage, but before final oocyte maturation and spawning as females. Therefore the protogynous pattern of gonadal development was non-functional. There was no dimorphism in the sperm duct configuration, and all the testes were secondary testes reported for diandric, protogynous species with undelimited gonads. Very early development of an ovarian lumen appeared to have resulted in a secondary-male configuration in all testes, although redifferentiation into males appeared to have occurred before sexual maturity and spawning as females. 相似文献
