1. We examined 7–12 years of monthly to quarterly historical data from 15 lakes in FL, U.S.A. to determine the extent and outcome of invasion by the alien cladoceran Daphnia lumholtzi Sars. 2. The alien species was found in 10 of the 15 lakes, including Florida’s three largest lakes: Okeechobee, George and Apopka. All the surveyed lakes had resident populations of the smaller native species Daphnia ambigua Scourfield. 3. In most of the lakes, D. ambigua occurred seven to ninefold more often in plankton samples than D. lumholtzi, and at 10‐ to 100‐fold higher maximal densities. One exception was a small lake in central Florida (Lake Jesup), where D. lumholtzi attained high densities on several occasions in the 10 years of sampling. 4. In Lake Okeechobee, where data were of sufficient quality and quantity to perform statistical analyses, the results of canonical correlation analysis indicated that high densities of D. lumholtzi were correlated with lower concentrations of suspended solids, high algal biomass and higher temperature, whereas the opposite conditions were correlated with high densities of D. ambigua. 5. Based on the majority of data, D. lumholtzi has successfully invaded many lakes in Florida, yet it has not become a substantive component of the zooplankton. Additional research is needed to determine whether resources, fish predation or some other factor is responsible for this outcome of invasion.  相似文献

Abstract Organisms are often confronted with multiple enemy species. Defenses against different parasite species may be traded off against each other. However, if resistance is based on (potentially costly) general defense mechanisms, it may be positively correlated among parasites. In an experimental study, we confronted 19 clones from one Daphnia magna population with two bacterial and three microsporidian parasite species. All parasites were isolated from the same pond as the hosts. Host clones were specific in their susceptibility towards different parasite species, and parasite species were host-clone specific in their infectivity, spore production, and virulence, resulting in highly significant host-parasite interactions. Since the Daphnia 's resistance to different parasite species showed no obvious correlation, neither general defense mechanisms nor trade-offs in resistance explain our findings. None of the Daphnia clones were resistant to all parasite species, and the average level of resistance was quite similar among clones. This may reflect a cost of defense, so that the cumulative cost of being resistant to all parasite species might be too high.  相似文献

In contrast to the stable ionic composition of the oceans, inland waters show striking diversity, possessing salt concentrations varying from I mM to 5 M. Although species diversity is highest in fresh water, some lineages have colonized hypersaline environments where they encounter elevated levels of both ultraviolet (UV) radiation and osmotic stress. This study compares rates of evolution in halophilic and freshwater taxa for two groups of microcrustaceans, anostracans and daphniids, from Australia and North America. The results establish that halophilic species show consistent rate acceleration, involving elevated levels of both insertion/deletion events and of nucleotide substitutions. The elevated pace of molecular evolution does not appear to be linked to selection or to other agents that are known to influence the supply rate of mutations, such as UV exposure, generation length, or shifts in metabolic rate. However, variance in ionic strength, which is known to have potent effects on DNA-protein interactions as well as on the structural properties of DNA and proteins, might account for the lowered fidelity of DNA replication in life from hypersaline settings. Regardless of its cause, the consistent rate acceleration in halophiles suggests that past efforts to employ sequence divergences to date events, such as the age of asexual lineages in Artemia, have resulted in serious overestimates. More generally, the results indicate that coordinated shifts in rates of molecular evolution may occur in lineages exposed to extreme environmental conditions.  相似文献

Nonadditive genetic variation and genetic disequilibrium are two important factors that influence the evolutionary trajectory of natural populations. We assayed quantitative genetic variation in a temporary-pond-dwelling population of Daphnia pulex over a full season to examine the role of nonadditive genetic variation and genetic disequilibrium in determining the short-term evolutionary trajectory of a cyclic parthenogen. Quantitative traits were influenced by three factors: (1) clonal selection significantly changed the population mean phenotype during the course of the growing season; (2) sexual reproduction and recombination led to significant changes in life-history trait means and the levels of expressed genetic variation, implying the presence of substantial nonadditive genetic variation and genetic disequilibrium; and (3) Egg-bank effects were found to be an important component of the realized year-to-year change. Additionally, we examined the impact of genetic disequilibria induced by clonal selection on the genetic (co)variance structure with a common principal components model. Clonal selection caused significant changes in the (co)variance structure that were eliminated by a single bout of random mating, suggesting that a build-up of disequilibria was the primary source of changes in the (co)variance structure. The results of this study highlight the complexity of natural selection operating on populations that undergo alternating phases of sexual and asexual reproduction.  相似文献

Daphnia pulex clones originating from twelve small pond habitats were exposed to chemical cues from a size-selective predator, larvae of the phantom midge Chaoborus. Exposure delayed the onset of reproduction and increased the size at first reproduction. On the other hand, the neonates produced by these larger mothers were slightly smaller than the neonates produced by the smaller control mothers. In cladocerans, neonate size is usually positively correlated to the size of the mother. Thus exposure to Chaoborus kairomone apparently had direct effects on neonate size counterbalancing the maternal effects. Daphnia clones collected from Chaoborus-free and Chaoborus-rich environments exhibited different responses. In first adult instar, the clones from Chaoborus inhabited environments increased their offspring size under Chaoborus exposure whereas clones from Chaoborus-free environments did not. This may reflect clonal adaptation to the predation prehistory of their original habitat since larger neonates more quickly reach a size protected from the predator.  相似文献

Food limitation was tested in the laboratory by individual growth and reproduction of two cladoceran species, Ceriodaphnia richardi and Daphnia gessneri, from the shallow tropical Brazilian Lake Monte Alegre. The cladocerans were fed cultivated green alga Scenedesmus spinosus in concentrations of 0.20, 0.10, 0.05, and 0.025 mg C l−1. Higher biomass and growth rates occurred in the two highest-food concentrations; the two lowest ones negatively affected clutch size and first reproduction. The threshold food concentration is lower than 0.025 mg C l−1 and the incipient limiting level is a value between 0.10 and 0.20 mg C l−1. The largest species, D. gessneri, was more sensitive to low food concentrations. The effects of low and high temperatures (19 and 27°C) were evaluated by life table experiments with three cladocerans from the lake—Daphnia ambigua, D. gessneri, and Moina micrura—with no food limitation (1 mg C l−1 of S. spinosus). Higher population growth rates for the three species were found at 27°C; better performance in most life table parameters was observed for the former two species at the highest temperature, D. gessneri being the most sensitive to the lowest temperature. There are indications that temperature is an important abiotic factor that constrains populations of cladocerans for a short period in winter in the lake, when temperature decreases to 18–19°C. However, its influence cannot be separated from a biotic factor such as food, whose effect is stronger in the cool season, when concentrations are lower and contribution of inedible algae is relatively higher.  相似文献

为了检验已记录的4个溞属种类((隆线溞Daphnia carinata、透明溞D. hyalina、蚤状溞D. pulex和大型溞D. magna)的系统分类, 用试剂盒法分别提取4种溞类的基因组DNA。利用特异性引物, 通过PCR扩增了4种溞属种类的16S rDNA和COⅠ基因部分序列, 并与来自GenBank中每个种类相似度较高的同种序列进行分析。结果表明, 基于16S rDNA和COⅠ基因, 4个溞属种类的平均种间相似度分别为85.56%和80.67%, 碱基中A+T含量均明显高于G+C含量。基于COⅠ基因, 巢湖隆线溞与来自GenBank上的拟同形溞((Daphnia similoides AB549199))相似度为99%, 分歧度为0.4%0.9%。就16S rDNA和COⅠ基因而言, 巢湖透明溞更接近于盔形溞(Daphnia galeata)。基于16S rDNA和COⅠ基因构建的NJ树和贝叶斯树, 两者的主要分枝基本一致。结果暗示, 巢湖隆线溞与拟同形溞为一个种, 透明溞应属于盔形溞。由于缺乏核基因的研究, 有关巢湖溞属的分类地位还需进行更深入的探讨。    相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assay to qualitatively detect the kinetics of benzo[a]pyrene (B[Ma]P)-induced DNA effects in the water flea Daphnia magna exposed to 25 and 50 µg l-1 B[a]P for 7 and 6 days, respectively. Mortality was recorded on a daily basis in both experiments, and RAPD analysis was performed on samples collected every day following isolation of genomic DNA. The main changes occurring in RAPD profiles produced by the population of Daphnia magna exposed to 25 and 50µg l-1 B[a]P was a decrease and increase in band intensity, respectively. Most of the changes occurring in the RAPD patterns were likely to be the result of B[a]P-induced DNA damage (B[a]P DNA adducts, oxidized bases, DNA breakages) and/or mutations (point mutations and large rearrangements). In addition, reproducible changes also occurred in the profiles generated by control Daphnia magna. The results lead us to suggest that, in addition to B[a]P-induced DNA damage and mutations, factors such as variation in gene expression, steady levels of genetic alterations and changes in metabolic processes could induce some changes in RAPD patterns. Nevertheless, our data suggest that DNA damage and mutations appear to be the main factors influencing RAPD patterns. This study also emphasizes that unexpected variation in control profiles is not always associated with artefacts.  相似文献

It has recently been suggested that the expression of parasite virulence depends on host population density, such that infected hosts have a higher sensitivity to density, and thus reach their carrying capacity earlier than uninfected hosts. In this scenario, parasite-induced reduction in fitness (i.e., virulence) increases with host density. We tested this hypothesis experimentally, using outdoor mesocosm populations of Daphnia magna infected by the microsporidian Octosporea bayeri. Contrary to the prediction, virulence was independent of host density. In a competition experiment with initial prevalence of 50%, O. bayeri reduced the competitive ability of infected Daphnia within the asexual growth phase independent of initial host population density. In an additional experiment we set up populations with 100% and 0% prevalence and followed their population dynamics over the whole season. Consistent with the competition experiment, we found no difference in population dynamics within the asexual growth phase of the host, suggesting that infected hosts are not more sensitive to density than uninfected hosts. The additional experiment, however, included more than the initial growth phase as did the competition experiment. Eventually, after 100 days, 100% infected populations assumed a reduced carrying capacity compared to uninfected populations. We identify and discuss three reasons for the discrepancy between our experiment and the predictions.  相似文献

The stomach contents of adult brown trout Salmo trutta from Lake Sorell, Tasmania, were analysed during 6 years of increasing turbidity to follow changes in the diet associated with dramatic changes in water clarity. Brown trout were sampled from 1996, when turbidity was 26 NTU, to 2001 when turbidity was 141 NTU. The mean relative volume of stomach contents decreased progressively to 2001, by which time it was only one sixth of that in 1996, and the mean diversity of prey in stomachs decreased from an average of more than six species per stomach in 1996 to one species in 2001. The species composition of stomach contents shifted from domination by the phreatoicid isopod Colubotelson sp., to the galaxiid fish Galaxias auratus and the amphipod Austrochiltonia australis , and then the cladoceran Daphnia carinata . To give an indication of diet changes over a typical yearly cycle in the current turbid state of the lake, a sample was taken from each season from December 2000 to September 2001. Two basic diets were found during the year; brown trout specialized on D. carinata in summer and autumn, and G. auratus in winter and spring. Mean diversity of prey was less than two species per stomach in all samples from 2000 to 2001, except for the sample from spring 2001 when it was 2·2 species per stomach, and the mean relative volume of stomach contents was more than three times greater in winter than any other season. The ways in which high turbidity may have influenced the changes in the brown trout diet observed since 1996 and the patterns evident during the seasons of 2000–2001 are discussed.  相似文献
