Plants of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and orchard grass (Dactylus glomerata) were grown in controlled environment chambers at two CO2 concentrations (350 and 700 μmol mol-1) and 4 constant day/night growth temperatures of 15, 20, 25 and 30°C for 50–90 days to determine changes in growth and whole plant CO2 efflux (dark respiration). To facilitate comparisons with other studies, respiration data were expressed on the basis of leaf area, dry weight and protein. Growth at elevated CO2 increased total plant biomass at all temperatures relative to ambient CO2, but the relative enhancement declined (P≤0.05) as temperature increased. Whole plant respiration (Rd) at elevated CO2 declined at 15 and 20°C in D. glomerata on an area, weight or protein basis and in M. sativa on a weight or protein basis when compared to ambient CO2. Separation of Rd into respiration required for growth (Rg) and maintenance (Rm) showed a significant effect of elevated CO2 on both components. Rm was reduced in both species but only at lower temperatures (15°C in M. sativa and 15 and 20°C in D. glomerata). The effect on Rm could not be accounted for by protein content in either species. Rg was also reduced with elevated CO2; however no particular effect of temperature was observed, i. e. Rg was reduced at 20, 25 and 30°C in M. sativa and at 15 and 25°C in D. glomerata. For the two perennial species used in the present study, the data suggest that both Rg and Rm can be reduced by anticipated increases in atmospheric CO2; however, CO2 inhibition of total plant respiration may decline as a function of increasing temperature  相似文献

A Scottish isolate of cocksfoot streak virus (CSV-S) was found to have flexuous filamentous particles which, in sap of infected cocksfoot plants, had a modal length of 712 nm. It was transmitted from infected to healthy cocksfoot plants in a non-persistent manner by Myzus persicae and by mechanical inoculation of infective sap extracts containing an anti-oxidant. Apart from cocksfoot, mechanical inoculation of infective sap succeeded in infecting only four of 22 plant species tested. The infectivity of sap extracts containing 0.2% thioglycerol was lost after heating for 10 min at 55oC but not 50oC, storage at room temperature for 48 but not 24 hours, and after diluting 10-2to 10-3. Highly purified preparations of CSV-S particles sedimented as a single component with a sedimentation coefficient of 139S and had a buoyant density in rubidium bromide of 1.31 g/cm3. Virus particles were composed of one protein and one ssRNA species with estimated Mr of 31 000 and 3.2 times 106respectively. In ELISA, an antiserum prepared to CSV-S detected the virus in all aerial parts of infected cocksfoot plants and, when present in the ratio of 1 infected leaf: 1000 healthy leaves. Both CSV-S-infected and -uninfected cocksfoot also contained a previously undescribed virus with isometric particles c. 30 nm in diameter. This virus, named cocksfoot cryptic virus (CCV), was seed-borne in two cvs of cocksfoot tested and its particles contained two dsRNA species of estimated Mr of 1.14 times 106and 1.27 times 106. Despite the fact that particles of CSV-S were largely free from CCV particles following exclusion chromatography on agarose beads prior to immunisation, immunoelectron microscopy (IEM) showed that the antiserum prepared to CSV-S also contained some antibodies to CCV. Evidence from IEM suggested a possible distant serological relationship of CCV to ryegrass and beet (BCV 1 or BCV 2, or both) cryptoviruses, all members of sub-group A of crypto viruses.  相似文献

The mechanisms responsible for fluctuations in species composition of semi-natural grassland are not well understood. To identify plant traits that determine the poor competitive ability of Festuca pratensis compared to Dactylis glomerata especially during summer, the growth of both grasses was monitored over time and at different temperatures and photoperiods. Plants of both grasses were grown from seed with non-limiting nutrient supply at three day/night temperatures (11/6, 18/13 and 25/20°C) and two photoperiods (16 and 12 h). F. pratensis had a significantly lower relative growth rate than D. glomerata, mainly due to its lower specific leaf area and reduced nitrogen productivity. At high temperature, F. pratensis had a considerably lower root weight ratio than D. glomerata leading to substantially slower root growth. F. pratensis responded to a shorter photoperiod with an increase in the net assimilation rate, whereas D. glomerata responded with an increase in specific leaf area. The low competitive ability of F. pratensis compared to D. glomerata was mainly associated with its lower specific leaf area and nitrogen productivity. The stronger decline of its competitive ability during summer was probably related to the decreased allocation of dry matter to the roots at higher temperatures which leads to slower root growth compared to D. glomerata. Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz. is the dominant filamentous algae of the river Ilm, Thuringia, Germany. For most of the year it can be found at open as well as at shaded sites. Photosynthetic acclimation of C. glomerata to different light intensities was detected by chlorophyll fluorescence measurements and pigment analysis. Cladophora glomerata from highlight sites showed decreased values of efficiency of open photosystem II (Fv/Fm) as compared with C. glomerata from low‐light sites. Winter populations revealed higher Fv/Fm values than summer populations. A light‐induced decrease in efficiency of the closed photosystem II was observed at increasing irradiance intensities. The decrease was higher in C. glomerata from shaded sites compared with plants from open sites. Differences in the photosynthetic electron transport rate of different populations of C. glomerata were shown by photosynthesis–irradiance curves. Summer populations from high‐light sites yielded higher maximum electron transport rates than plants from low‐light sites, whereas winter populations exhibited significantly decreased values compared with the summer populations. Results of the analysis of photosynthetic pigments corresponded with data from chlorophyll fluorescence measurements. In addition to these long‐term acclimation effects, C. glomerata expressed its ability to cope with rapid changes in the light environment by the de‐epoxidation of violaxanthin during exposure to high light intensities.  相似文献

1. The study reported here examined growth and developmental interactions between the gregarious larval koinobiont endoparasitoid Cotesia glomerata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and two of its hosts that vary considerably in growth potential: Pieris rapae and the larger P. brassicae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae). At pupation, healthy larvae of P. brassicae are over twice as large, in terms of fresh body mass, as those of P. rapae. 2. Clutch size of C. glomerata was manipulated artificially, and the relationship between parasitoid burden and the maximum weight of the parasitised host (= host–parasitoid complex) was measured. In both hosts, the maximum complex weight was correlated positively with parasitoid burden. Compared with unparasitised hosts, however, the growth of P. rapae was increased at significantly lower parasitoid burdens than in P. brassicae. Emerging wasp size was correlated negatively with parasitoid burden in both host species, whereas development time was less affected. 3. After larval parasitoid egress, the weight of the host carcass increased slightly, but not significantly, with parasitoid burden, although there was a strong correlation between the proportion of host mass consumed by C. glomerata larvae during development and parasitoid burden. 4. Clutch size was generally correlated positively with instar parasitised in both hosts, and greater in P. brassicae than in P. rapae. Sex ratios were much more female biased in L1 and L2 P. rapae than in all other host classes. Adult parasitoid size was correlated inversely with host instar at parasitism, and wasps emerging from P. brassicae were larger, and completed development faster, than conspecifics emerging from P. rapae. 5. The data reveal that parasitism by C. glomerata has profound species‐specific effects on the growth of both host species. Consequently, optimality models in which host quality is often based on host size at parasitism or unparasitised growth potential may have little utility in describing the development of gregarious koinobiont endoparasitoids. The results of this investigation are discussed in relation to the potential effectiveness of gregarious koinobionts in biological control programmes.  相似文献

We investigated the causes of among-plant variation in the parasitism rate of Pieris melete larvae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) by the parasitoid fly Epicampocera succincta (Diptera: Tachinidae). The rate of parasitism by E. succincta was much higher on the bitter cress Cardamine appendiculata than on any other cruciferous plants. Adult female flies were found to be more attracted to C. appendiculata than to other cruciferous plants for searching for hosts. The parasitoid appeared to be unable to distinguish P. melete from an alternative host, Pieris rapae larvae, that coexisted with P. melete on most crucifer plants. Similarly, E. succincta failed to avoid P. rapae parasitized by the braconid wasp Cotesia glomerata. C. glomerata is a superior competitor to E. succincta if occupying the same host, killing the host before the E. succincta larva can grow and depriving the larva of the chance to survive. E. succincta attacked P. rapae larvae on most cruciferous plants, many of which were already occupied by C. glomerata; only on Cardamine appendiculata was E. succincta free from interspecific competition, because only P. melete was found on this particular plant. However, the strong preference for the hosts on C. appendiculata incurred heavy intraspecific competition among larvae on this plant, killing as great a proportion of larvae as interspecific competition did on the other plants. The balance between the strength of intraspecific competition on the preferred plant and of interspecific competition on the other plants appeared to maintain plant preference by E. succincta. It is essential to predict the impact of elevated Pco2 on marine organisms and habitats to anticipate the severity and consequences of future ocean chemistry change. Despite the importance of carry‐over effects in the evolutionary history of marine organisms, few studies have considered links between life‐history stages when determining how marine organisms will respond to elevated Pco2, and none have considered the link between adults and their offspring. Herein, we exposed adults of wild and selectively bred Sydney rock oysters, Saccostrea glomerata to elevated Pco2 during reproductive conditioning and measured the development, growth and survival response of their larvae. We found that elevated Pco2 had a negative impact on larvae of S. glomerata causing a reduction in growth, rate of development and survival. Exposing adults to elevated Pco2 during reproductive conditioning, however, had positive carry‐over effects on larvae. Larvae spawned from adults exposed to elevated Pco2 were larger and developed faster, but displayed similar survival compared with larvae spawned from adults exposed to ambient Pco2. Furthermore, selectively bred larvae of S. glomerata were more resilient to elevated Pco2 than wild larvae. Measurement of the standard metabolic rate (SMR) of adult S. glomerata showed that at ambient Pco2, SMR is increased in selectively bred compared with wild oysters and is further increased during exposure to elevated Pco2. This study suggests that sensitive marine organisms may have the capacity to acclimate or adapt to elevated Pco2 over the next century and a change in energy turnover indicated by SMR may be a key process involved.  相似文献

Abstract Parasitoids have long proven to be model organisms in studying resource‐related constraints on immature development. Here we examine the relationship between host cocoon (= pupal) size in the gregarious endoparasitoid wasp, Cotesia glomerata, and development time and adult size in the solitary idiobiont hyperparasitoid, Pteromalus semotus. Little is known about the biology or ecology of this ecto‐hyperparasitoid species, although it is one of the major secondary hyperparasitoids of C. glomerata. The size of the adult wasp covaried with the size of the host cocoon at parasitism. Moreover, female wasps were larger than male wasps for a given cocoon size. Adult wasps have remarkably long life‐spans, 3 months on average. Longevity did not significantly differ with sex. We also examined how larvae of P. semotus exclude other potential competitors. P. semotus is protandrous, with females taking significantly longer to complete their development than males. In experiments where several eggs of P. semotus were placed on individual pupae of C. glomerata, newly hatched hyperparasitoid larvae moved rapidly over the surface of the host and destroyed the eggs of any conspecifics by biting them before they would initiate feeding on host tissues. Our results are discussed in relation to those with other studies with solitary ichneumonid idiobiont hyperparasitoids of C. glomerata.  相似文献
