Stomatal conductance of individual leaves was measured in a maize field, together with leaf water potential, leaf turgor, xylem ABA concentration and leaf ABA concentration in the same leaves. Stomatal conductance showed a tight relationship with xylem ABA, but not with the current leaf water status or with the concentration of ABA in the bulk leaf. The relationship between stomatal conductance and xylem [ABA] was common for variations in xylem [ABA] linked to the decline with time of the soil water reserve, to simultaneous differences between plants grown on compacted, non-compacted and irrigated soil, and to plant-to-plant variability. Therefore, this relationship is unlikely to be fortuitous or due to synchronous variations. These results suggest that increased concentration of ABA in the xylem sap in response to stress can control the gas exchange of plants under field conditions.  相似文献

The effect of dietary iron loading on biliary iron excretion was investigated with male Wistar rats aged 6 wk. The rats were fed purified diets with either 174 or 1740 mg FeSO4. 7H2O/kg diet and demineralized water for 6 wk. Blood haemoglobin, hematocrit, and iron concentrations in kidney and heart were not affected and iron concentrations in liver, spleen, and tibia were significantly raised after feeding the high-iron diet. The high-iron diet did not raise biliary iron excretion, suggesting that biliary iron excretion does not play an important role in regulating iron metabolism in rat after dietary iron loading.  相似文献

Summary We studied seed size, seed nutrient status and seedling growth of two closely related fynbos Proteaceae species-pairs growing on juxtaposed soils of different nutrient and moisture status. Seeds had a greater mass and higher phosphorus and nitrogen contents for species occurring on limestone (higher nutrient and moisture contents) than those on the colluvial sands (lower nutreints and moisture). This trend was found within, but not across genera, stressing the importance of phylogeny in interpreting adaptations. It would be difficult to test for the effects of either nutrients or moisture separately, since the same advantage of enhanced seedling size, and hence survival in a stressed environment, applies to both factors. The increased root: shoot ratios (using lengths) of the Leucadendron species relative to the Protea species are interpreted as an attempt to overcome a phylogenetic constraint that results in smaller seed size in the former genus.  相似文献

This paper describes tuberculosislike lesions affecting the spine of Neolithic skeleton found in Arene Candide cave (Liguria, Italy) and representing one of the earliest cases of this disease in Europe. The burial is attributed to middle Neolithic (square-mouthed pottery culture) whose layers date, by 14C, to the first half of the fourth millennium BC. The skeleton, well preserved in the postcranial portion, belongs to a male aged about 15 years having a very light body build. Resorptive lesions localized to the lower thoracic and upper lumbar vertebral bodies, collapse and angular kyphosis, resulting from complete destruction of T11 and T12 and partial destruction of T10 and L1, are the main pathologic features. The morphology of the lesions, sites involved, and age of the specimen are consistent with a diagnosis of tuberculous spondylitis (Pott's disease). The extreme gracility of the skeleton, along with other signs of stress (Harris lines, enamel hypoplasia) suffered during the last years of life, and the limited bony regeneration point to a disease process in its late phase having arisen at the beginning of adolescence. The funerary ritual suggests that the social integration of this adolescent was not prevented by the severe infirmity.  相似文献

Parenchymal cells from normal adult rat liver, prepared with high yield (30 × 106 cells/g liver) and viability index (>96%) by a non-perfusion method, were maintained in non-proliferating monolayer culture. Several metabolic functions were investigated for 7 days to evaluate functional integrity of the cultured hepatocytes. Leucine was linearly incorporated into protein for 4.5 h at each day of cultivation and the incorporation rate increased up to 2-fold after 3 days. Urea production was maintained at a rate of 0.5 μmoles/mg protein × h for at least 7 days, and its amount was enhanced 2-fold within 24 h by the addition of 3 mM NH4Cl. Glucose was formed during the first days by the hepatocytes and was then taken up with increasing amount from the surrounding medium. Lactate consumption, on the other hand, was replaced by lactate production after one day of cultivation.Variations in enzyme levels of lactate dehydrogenase, arginase, glutamine synthetase and glucose-6-phosphatase were also studied during the whole culture period. Cell leakage, which was detected only in the case of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), occurred through the 4th day along with a concomitant loss of intracellular LDH activity. After 4 days, however, the enzyme activity returned to the initial level. Arginase was maintained throughout the cultivation period and was stimulated 2- to 3-fold within 24 h by NH4Cl. Glutamine synthetase declined within the first 4 h of cultivation and then remained in the hepatocytes with a transitory rise after 2 days. Its activity was also found to be inversely related to the concentration of glutamine in the culture medium up to 4 mM. Glucose-6-phosphatase gradually decreased during the cultivation period, the enzyme activity, however, was stimulated by glucagon within 24 h.  相似文献

Klausner has hypothesized that female-headed households are less efficient in the use of energy than male-headed households because they are less disciplined and ordered. The present study used multivariate analyses to determine whether female-headed households were less efficient in the use of electrical energy than male-headed households in a representative sample of 4638 Anglo, Spanish-speaking, and black homeowning Texas households. The results indicated that, after controlling for the effects of other variables known to affect the use of electricity, sex of household head had nostatistically significant independent effect on electricity consumption in any ethnic or marital status group. The authors compare their results to those obtained by Klausner and discuss implications for social organizational theory of household energy consumption.  相似文献

A maximum of 22 bands comprising four esterase subgroups—acetylesterase, carboxylesterase, cholinesterase, and acetylcholinesterase—were detected following electrophoresis of lesser snow goose sera on polyacrylamide gels. A minimum of seven structural genes was surmised to be involved in the biosynthesis of these enzymes following physiochemical characterizations. The genetic variability of these loci was calculated to be 1.25% average heterozygosity, while 14.3% of the loci were polymorphic. These estimates of genetic variability were substantially lower than those reported for other vertebrate species. The low degree of genetic variability found in snow goose serum esterases coupled with the extensive protein multiplicity observed may possibly reflect an adaptive strategy based on biochemical plasticity rather than genic heterozygosity for this species. The nature of evolutionary forces acting upon multiple enzyme systems such as esterases is discussed. Digestion is associated with gastric secretion that leads to an alkalinisation of the blood, termed the "alkaline tide". Numerous studies on different reptiles and amphibians show that while plasma bicarbonate concentration ([HCO(3)(-)](pl)) increases substantially during digestion, arterial pH (pHa) remains virtually unchanged, due to a concurrent rise in arterial PCO(2) (PaCO(2)) caused by a relative hypoventilation. This has led to the suggestion that postprandial amphibians and reptiles regulate pHa rather than PaCO(2). Here we characterize blood gases in the South American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus) during digestion and following systemic infusions of NaHCO(3) and HCl in fasting animals to induce a metabolic alkalosis or acidosis in fasting animals. The magnitude of these acid-base disturbances were similar in magnitude to that mediated by digestion and exercise. Plasma [HCO(3)(-)] increased from 18.4+/-1.5 to 23.7+/-1.0 mmol L(-1) during digestion and was accompanied by a respiratory compensation where PaCO(2) increased from 13.0+/-0.7 to 19.1+/-1.4 mm Hg at 24 h. As a result, pHa decreased slightly, but were significantly below fasting levels 36 h into digestion. Infusion of NaHCO(3) (7 mmol kg(-1)) resulted in a 10 mmol L(-1) increase in plasma [HCO(3)(-)] within 1 h and was accompanied by a rapid elevation of pHa (from 7.58+/-0.01 to 7.78+/-0.02). PaCO(2), however, did not change following HCO(3)(-) infusion, which indicates a lack of respiratory compensation. Following infusion of HCl (4 mmol kg(-1)), plasma pHa decreased by 0.07 units and [HCO(3)(-)](pl) was reduced by 4.6 mmol L(-1) within the first 3 h. PaCO(2), however, was not affected and there was no evidence for respiratory compensation. Our data show that digesting rattlesnakes exhibit respiratory compensations to the alkaline tide, whereas artificially induced metabolic acid-base disturbances of same magnitude remain uncompensated. It seems difficult to envision that the central and peripheral chemoreceptors would experience different stimuli during these conditions. One explanation for the different ventilatory responses could be that digestion induces a more relaxed state with low responsiveness to ventilatory stimuli.  相似文献

Scent-marking behavior has been well documented in many primate species. Three common functions attributed to scent-marking in males of multi-male/multi-female lemur species include: 1) advertisement of individual identity, 2) territorial defense, and 3) reproductive suppression. We examined the average number of scent-marks per hour exhibited daily by adult male sifakas (Propithecus edwardsi) and found that patterns of scent-marking changed with season, natal status, and dominance status. Males in single-male groups scent-marked at the highest rate, followed by dominant males, males of equal status, and subordinate males. Non-natal males generally scent-marked at higher rates than natal males, and adult males living in a natal group without a parent marked at higher rates than males living with a parent. All males scent-marked at higher rates in the migration season compared to the other seasons. These patterns were consistent with territorial defense and advertisement to females, and the suggestion that these chemical signals impart information concerning status. Since scent-marking behavior tracked seasons and varied with both dominance and natal status, it may serve multiple functions in males.  相似文献
