Summary Recent studies suggest that diet quality is responsible for differential survivorship of vole cohorts (Boonstra and Boag 1987) and spacing behavior of females (Ims 1987). These phenomena have been related either to a lack of or a deterioration in the quality of the preferred food. To test this hypothesis, we compared foods habits, food quality and health status of meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) from high and low population density phases. In this study, seven plant species represented the main food items used on a regular basis and biomass values of preferred species decreased with browsing pressure. In addition, food quality of the main dietary items changed between phases forcing females to adjust their feeding strategy accordingly. Health of voles changed also opening the way to speculations on competition for high quality food resources and survivorship.  相似文献

The flow of carbon from plant roots through the microbial biomass is one of the key processes in terrestrial ecosystems. Roots release considerable amounts of organic materials which are utilized by microbes as substrate for biosynthesis and energy supply. The fate of photosynthates and other organic material in the soil-root environment under different conditions was studied using14C-tracers. Soil structure and texture had a large effect on the turnover of the14C-labelled materials through the microbial biomas. Finer, clayey soils tended to be more preservative than coarser, sandy soils,i.e., larger amounts of14C were incorporated in microbial biomass and soil organic matter fractions in clayey soils than in sandy soils.The soil nutrient status also appeared to affect organic matter turnover. At limiting plant-nutrient concentrations the utilization of14C-labelled photosynthates seem to be hampered. Plant roots influenced the transformation of glucose and crop residues and the effect was attributed to plant-induced changes in mineral nutrient status. The mechanisms of this process and the consequences are discussed.A number of areas for future research are identified, including the potentials for manipulating rhizodeposition.  相似文献

Blood group active fucolipids of human meconium have been shown to correlate to the ABH and Lewis blood groups and to the secretor status of the corresponding children. Using a monoclonal anti-Leb antibody and an antibody to chromatogram binding assayy the presence of Leb antigens in meconium of a phenotypically A Le(a+b) non-secretor indivual is here demonstrated. Phenotype was determined on cord blood and saliva obtained 2 years after birth.  相似文献

The divalent-cation ionophores A23187 and ionomycin exert dose-dependent suppressive effects on the stimulatory actions of luteinizing hormone in ovarian cells invitro. Micromolar concentrations of both A23187 and ionomycin can inhibit the production of progesterone and the stimulation of ornithine decarboxylase activity. Inhibitory concentrations of these ionophores deplete total cell content of calcium, and also seem to suppress protein synthesis.  相似文献

1. In Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides the Qx absorption band of the reaction center bacteriochlorophyll dimer which bleaches on photo-oxidation is both blue-shifted and has an increased extinction coefficient on solubilisation of the chromatophore membrane with lauryldimethylamine-N-oxide. These effects may be attributable in part to the particle flattening effect.2. The difference spectrum of photo-oxidisable c type cytochrome in the chromatophore was found to have a slightly variable peak position in the α-band (λmax at 551–551.25 nm); this position was always red-shifted in comparison to that of isolated cytochrome c2 (λmax at 549.5 ± 0.5 nm). The shift in wavelength maximum was not due to association with the reaction center protein. A possible heterogeneity in the c-type cytochromes of chromatophores is discussed.3. Flash-induced difference spectra attributed to cytochrome b were resolved at several different redox potentials and in the presence and absence of antimycin. Under most conditions, one major component, cytochrome b50 appeared to be involved. However, in some circumstances, reduction of a component with the spectral characteristics of cytochrome b?90 was observed.4. Difference spectra attributed to (BChl)2, Q?II, c type cytochrome and cytochrome b50 were resolved in the Soret region for Rhodopseudomonas capsulata.5. A computer-linked kinetic spectrophotometer for obtaining automatically the difference spectra of components functioning in photosynthetic electron transfer chains is described. The system incorporates a novel method for automatically adjusting and holding the photomultiplier supply voltage.  相似文献

A procedure is described for the purification of nuclei and identification of chromatin proteins in transformed epithelial cell lines from mammalian bladder and salivary gland. Nuclear purification was performed by homogenization, in hypotonic buffer containing polyamines to stabilize the nuclear structure, followed by 0.1–0.2% Triton X-100 washing and centrifugation through 2.2 m sucrose. Chromatin was liberated from nuclei by freeze-thawing in hypotonic buffer and the chromatin proteins were extracted with 7 m urea/3 m NaCl. The chromatin proteins were identified using NEPHGE two-dimensional electrophoresis and fluorographic autoradiography. This procedure enabled detection of histones and a range of basic nonhistone chromatin proteins, following cell culture in the presence of low levels of l-(4,5-3H)leucine.  相似文献

Comparative limnology of nine lakes of Jammu and Kashmir Himalayas   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
Two lakes in the lower Siwalik Himalayas, five in the Kashmir valley and two situated in the high mountains of the Kashmir Himalayas were investigated for their physico-chemical and biological features. The lakes, differing significantly in their morphology and in thermal behaviour, rank from the subtropical monomictic to the dimictic type. The lakes at high altitudes (> 3000 m) have very low electric conductivity which increases with the decrease in altitude. The most dominant ions in water are calcium and bicarbonate. The macrophytic vegetation of the lakes does not show any definite relationship either with altitude or with physico-chemical milieu. In the lakes with low fertility the phytoplankton is dominated by diatoms and Chlorophyceae but in eutrophic lakes Cyanophyceae predominate. The zooplankton population of the lakes is mainly comprised of rotifera. On the basis of general limnological features and the rates of phytoplankton production most of the lakes may be categorized either as eutrophic or in the process of rapid evolution. Only one lake is oligotrophic.  相似文献

Specimens of ocean skaters Halobates were collected off the south coast of Japan in the East China Sea in 1995, and from the Kumano‐nada Sea to the East China Sea in 1998 and 1999. Three species were identified: H. micans, H. germanus and H. sericeus. We found two species co‐occurring in comparable densities in different years, a phenomenon not hitherto reported in other regions of the ocean. We discuss distributions of the three Halobates species with special reference to the influence of the Kuroshio Current, temporal variations of sea‐surface temperature, and monsoonal winds.  相似文献

Relationships between taxonomic composition of shallow epilithic algal communities and nine environmental variables in 32 lakes of different trophic states in Ireland were explored using gradient analysis. A canonical correspondence analysis using four representative environmental variables, alkalinity (correlated with pH and conductivity), maximum phytoplankton chl a (CHLmax) (correlated with total P, total N, and chl), turbidity, and water color explained 21% of the variance in taxa distributions. The first two axes were significant and accounted for 77% of the variance in the periphyton–environmental relationship. The first axis was strongly related to alkalinity and color, which reflected geology and land use in the watersheds. The second axis was most correlated with CHLmax, and separation of lakes corresponded to their Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) trophic classification based on water chemistry. Eutrophic lakes were characterized by cyanobacteria taxa and Stigeoclonium sp. Diatoms and desmids were generally more abundant in oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes. Values for diatom trophic indices were poor indicators of trophic state. Weighted averaging regression and calibration techniques were used to develop transfer functions between 84 taxa and total P, total N, and CHLmax. The total P inference model predicted OECD trophic classification correctly for 84% of the lakes. Values for taxa preferences resulting from such models can provide the foundation for biomonitoring schemes using extant periphyton communities. The turnover time of periphyton taxa should integrate changes in environmental conditions at a temporal scale intermediate to surface‐sediment fossil diatom assemblages and water column variables, which may be more appropriate for detecting annual changes.  相似文献

In spatial competition between individuals, neither fish sex nor body mass affected dominance status in masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou . In contrast, resting metabolic rate ( M R) was significantly correlated with dominance status, indicating that a high metabolic rate can increase the dominance rank of juvenile salmon. Whole animal growth rate was significantly correlated with M R, but not with initial body weight. This suggests that the body size of masu salmon is not a cause, but rather a consequence, of dominance status which is closely related to M R. The increment width between otolith daily rings was also significantly correlated with M R. Thus, the size of the Otolith may indicate the degree of M R.  相似文献
