Leaf nitrogen content per area (Narea) is a good indicator of assimilative capacity of leaves of deciduous broad-leaved trees. This study examined the degrees of increase in Narea in response to canopy openings as leaf mass per area (LMA) and leaf nitrogen content per mass (Nmass) in saplings of eight deciduous broad-leaved tree species in Hokkaido, northern Japan. Five of the species were well-branched species with a large number of small leaves (lateral-growth type), and the other three species were less-branched species with a small number of large leaves (vertical-growth type). The degrees of increase in Narea were compared between the two crown types. In closed-canopy conditions, leaves of the vertical-growth species tended to have a lower LMA and higher Nmass than those of the lateral-growth species, which resulted in similar Narea for both. LMA increased in canopy openings in the eight species, and the degrees of increase were not largely different between the lateral- and vertical-growth species. On the contrary, Nmass was unchanged in canopy openings in the eight species. As a result, Narea of each species increased in canopy openings in proportion to the increase in LMA, and the degrees of increase in Narea were similar in the lateral- and vertical-growth species. Therefore, this study showed that the degrees of increase in Narea were not correlated with the crown architecture (i.e., the lateral- and vertical-growth types).  相似文献

We have constructed a highly useful phage-displayed human antibody repertoire with limited cloning efforts. Our strategy was to maximize diversity during the first steps of library construction through the use of various lymphoid sources from several donors, inclusion of different immunoglobulin isotypes, and performance of multiple separate amplification reactions with all possible combinations within a complex primer set. The resulting variable region collections were cloned to form a moderate size library, composed by 4.25x10(8) single chain antibody fragments. This repertoire was successfully used to retrieve binders to seven model antigens: six proteins and one 12 aa peptide. Binding affinities reached nanomolar and even subnanomolar range. Sequence diversity and V-gene usage variability among binders were proven. Our approach was not focused on absolute library size, but on a high quality sampling of variable regions from the human antibody repertoire.  相似文献

In a recent paper, Wright et al. (2003) argue for the hypothesis that greater biologically available energy elevates the rate of molecular evolution. However, their results are also consistent with alternative hypotheses that invoke either environmentally driven variation in effective population sizes, or natural selection, or both. The available energy gradient cited by Wright et al. is linearly correlated with temperature fluctuations, and the observed rate heterogeneity could be a consequence of this environmental variability. The distribution of phylogenetic branch lengths alone is insufficient to distinguish between the hypotheses, and complementary approaches are suggested.  相似文献

Although factors influencing androgen deposition in the avian egg and its effects on nestling fitness are recently receiving considerable attention, little is known about the potential costs of high testosterone levels in the females. Our study aimed at determining the effect of injections of testosterone (T) in female zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), on clutch size, egg mass, yolk mass, and yolk androgen content. Females were given a single bolus injection of T in a range of doses after laying the first egg. Results show that administration of T negatively affected clutch size; the strength of this effect increased with increasing doses of T. Females injected with the highest testosterone dose showed suppressed oviposition of the third and the fourth eggs. Interestingly, testosterone administration made females produce eggs with relatively large yolks, suggesting that T may mediate the trade-off between number and size of eggs. Testosterone injection resulted in elevated levels of androgen in the eggs, in contrast to control clutches, which showed a decreasing pattern of androgen concentration along the laying sequence. We conclude that high androgen investment in eggs may be limited by physiological requirements of the ovulatory process.  相似文献

The renaissance of interest in sexual selection during the last decades has fuelled an extraordinary increase of scientific papers on the subject in spiders. Research has focused both on the process of sexual selection itself, for example on the signals and various modalities involved, and on the patterns, that is the outcome of mate choice and competition depending on certain parameters. Sexual selection has most clearly been demonstrated in cases involving visual and acoustical signals but most spiders are myopic and mute, relying rather on vibrations, chemical and tactile stimuli. This review argues that research has been biased towards modalities that are relatively easily accessible to the human observer. Circumstantial and comparative evidence indicates that sexual selection working via substrate-borne vibrations and tactile as well as chemical stimuli may be common and widespread in spiders. Pattern-oriented research has focused on several phenomena for which spiders offer excellent model objects, like sexual size dimorphism, nuptial feeding, sexual cannibalism, and sperm competition. The accumulating evidence argues for a highly complex set of explanations for seemingly uniform patterns like size dimorphism and sexual cannibalism. Sexual selection appears involved as well as natural selection and mechanisms that are adaptive in other contexts only. Sperm competition has resulted in a plethora of morphological and behavioural adaptations, and simplistic models like those linking reproductive morphology with behaviour and sperm priority patterns in a straightforward way are being replaced by complex models involving an array of parameters. Male mating costs are increasingly being documented in spiders, and sexual selection by male mate choice is discussed as a potential result. Research on sexual selection in spiders has come a long way since Darwin, whose spider examples are reanalysed in the context of contemporary knowledge, but the same biases and methodological constraints have persisted almost unchanged through the current boom of research.  相似文献

Lake Budzyńskie is shallow, freshwater lake with a well-developed and differentiated macrophytic vegetation. Zooplankton samples were collected from five stations: two of them in submerged macrophytes (Chara and Myriophyllum), one in the zone of floating leaves (Potamogeton), a rush station (Typha) and one in the open water surrounding the vegetation beds. The mean Rotifera densities differed significantly between the lake parts. Furthermore, different habitats were characterised by differences in body size with the exception of the middle body size group (Keratella cochlearis, Polyarthra vulgaris and Trichocerca similis), which was dominated by limnetic representatives. However, in all the other size-dependent groups both stands of submerged macrophytes were characterised by much higher densities than other zones. Additionally, body size within the examined habitats significantly differed. Thus, the size structure of Rotifera communities was directly related to morphological and spatial structures of the substrata. Two groups of habitats were distinguished: the first one consisting of open water and two vegetated zones of less complicated structure (Potamogeton and Typha), and the second of more complex submerged macrophyte species (Chara and Myriophyllum). The differentiation of the architecture of macrophytes affected the nutritional conditions and refuge effectiveness of these habitats.  相似文献

The adaptive significance of nuclear DNA variation in angiosperms is still widely debated. The discussion mainly revolves round the causative factors influencing genome size and the adaptive consequences to an organism according to its growth form and environmental conditions. Nuclear DNA values are now known for 3874 angiosperm species (including 773 woody species) from over 219 families (out of a total of 500) and 181 species of woody gymnosperms, representing all the families. Therefore, comparisons have been made on not only angiosperms, taken as a whole, but also on the subsets of data based on taxonomic groups, growth forms, and environment. Nuclear DNA amounts in woody angiosperms are restricted to less than 23.54 % of the total range of herbaceous angiosperms; this range is further reduced to 6.8 % when woody and herbaceous species of temperate angiosperms are compared. Similarly, the tropical woody dicots are restricted to less than 50.5 % of the total range of tropical herbaceous dicots, while temperate woody dicots are restricted to less than 10.96 % of the total range of temperate herbaceous dicots. In the family Fabaceae woody species account for less than 14.1 % of herbaceous species. Therefore, in the total angiosperm sample and in subsets of data, woody growth form is characterized by a smaller genome size compared with the herbaceous growth form. Comparisons between angiosperm species growing in tropical and temperate regions show highly significant differences in DNA amount and genome size in the total angiosperm sample. However, when only herbaceous angiosperms were considered, significant differences were obtained in DNA amount, while genome size showed a non-significant difference. An atypical result was obtained in the case of woody angiosperms where mean DNA amount of tropical species was almost 25.04 % higher than that of temperate species, which is because of the inclusion of 85 species of woody monocots in the tropical sample. The difference becomes insignificant when genome size is compared. Comparison of tropical and temperate species among dicots and monocots and herbaceous monocots taken separately showed significant differences both in DNA amount and genome size. In herbaceous dicots, while DNA amount showed significant differences the genome size varies insignificantly. There was a non-significant difference among tropical and temperate woody dicots. In three families, i.e., Poaceae, Asteraceae, and Fabaceae the temperate species have significantly higher DNA amount and genome size than the tropical ones. Woody gymnosperms had significantly more DNA amount and genome size than woody angiosperms, woody eudicots, and woody monocots. Woody monocots also had significantly more DNA amount and genome size than woody eudicots. Lastly, there was no significant difference between deciduous and evergreen hardwoods. The significance of these results in relation to present knowledge on the evolution of genome size is discussed.  相似文献

Under local mate competition, sex ratio theory predicts that increasing numbers of ovipositing females (foundresses) on a site should lead to higher proportions of males in their broods. Fig pollinators have confirmed this prediction. It is also predicted that with decreasing clutch size, solitary foundresses should produce increasing proportions of sons. We show this to be true. Further, when several females compete, brood size decreases. As a result, the proportion of males increases, and this could provide a mechanistic explanation of sex ratio response to numbers of colonizing females. Therefore, sex ratio data on fig wasps need to be reassessed to determine whether females 'count' other foundresses, as is generally accepted, or whether they simply 'count' the number of eggs that they lay.  相似文献

We examined inter- and intra-clutch egg-size variation in the bluethroat (Luscinia s. svecica), an open-nesting passerine breeding in the sub-alpine region in southern Norway. By removing first clutches shortly after egg-laying, we induced laying of a repeat clutch. Females significantly reduced the number of eggs from the first to the second nesting attempt, but increased mean egg size. Females in good condition laid significantly larger eggs than those in poor condition. Consistent with predictions of the brood survival hypothesis, assuming an adaptive investment in last eggs to ensure survival of all eggs in the clutch, we found that the size of the last eggs in first clutches was generally larger than the mean egg size of the clutch, and that the relative size of the last egg increased with clutch size. However, a large last egg reflected a general increase in egg size throughout the laying sequence rather than a specific investment in the last egg only. Egg size was not significantly influenced by sex or paternity (within-pair versus extra-pair) of the embryo. In repeat clutches the last egg was not consistently larger than the mean for the clutch. We conclude that female bluethroats face resource limitations during egg formation early in the season, and that the patterns of increase in egg size with laying order for first clutches, and from first to repeat clutches, can largely be explained by proximate constraints on egg formation.  相似文献
