Nitrogen losses from perennial grass species 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Nitrogen losses from plants may occur through a variety of pathways, but so far, most studies have only quantified losses of nutrients by above-ground litter production. We used 15N pulse labelling to quantify total nitrogen losses from above- and below-ground plant parts. Using this method we were able to include also pathways other than above-ground litter production. To test the hypothesis that species from nutrient-poor habitats lose less nitrogen than species from more fertile soils, six perennial grasses from habitats with a wide range of nutrient availability were investigated: Lolium perenne, Arrhenatherum elatius, Anthoxanthum odoratum, Festuca rubra, F. ovina and Molinia caerulea. The results of an experiment carried out in pots in a green-house at two fertility levels show that statistically significant losses occur through pathways other than above-ground litter production. In the low fertility treatment, most (70%) losses from L. perenne occurred by litter production, but in Ar. elatius, F. rubra, F. ovina and M. caerulea, more than 50% of labelled N losses took place by root turn-over, leaching or exudation from roots. When nutrient supply increased, the 15N losses in above-ground dead material increased in all species and in Ar. elatius, A. odoratum and F. rubra the 15N losses via other pathways decreased. Ranked according to decreasing turnover coefficient the sequence of species was: L. perenne, A. odoratum, F. rubra, F. ovina, Ar. elatius, M. caerulea. These results suggest that species adapted to sites with low availability of nutrients lose less nitrogen (including above- and below-ground losses) than species adapted to more fertile soils. 相似文献

Environmental conditions are becoming increasingly challenging in managed ecosystems, especially in agricultural fields, where environmentally friendly solutions are urgently needed. Fungal symbionts offer great opportunities to enhance crop production and ecosystem sustainability under environmental stress. Some fungi are relatively well investigated (e.g., arbuscular mycorrhiza) and regularly used in commercial products, while others, such as fungal endophytes, are not well-known in this market, yet. Here, we review I) the characteristics and benefits, II) the advantages and challenges of principal isolation, preservation, inoculation, and field applications methods, and III) the environmental stress resistance mechanisms for different beneficial fungi. Utilization of mycorrhizae is still facing many challenges, particularly in terms of acquiring pure cultures and successfully establishing their symbiosis in the field. Effects of mycorrhizal associations on the above-ground organs through molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. Although biochemical values of some endophytes are well recognized, molecular mechanisms involved in endophytic-induced stress tolerance are poorly known. Fungal endophytes present several important advantages over mycorrhizal fungi including broader host range as well as straightforward isolation and application protocols. Further studies are necessary for selecting the best strains and communities, producing inoculum on a large-scale, and understanding the potential environmental hazards. 相似文献

Male katydids produce mating calls by stridulation using specialized structures on the forewings. The right wing (RW) bears a scraper connected to a drum‐like cell known as the mirror and a left wing (LW) that overlaps the RW and bears a serrated vein on the ventral side, the stridulatory file. Sound is generated with the scraper sweeping across the file, producing vibrations that are amplified by the mirror. Using this sound generator, katydids exploit a range of song carrier frequencies (CF) unsurpassed by any other insect group, with species singing as low as 600 Hz and others as high as 150 kHz. Sound generator size has been shown to scale negatively with CF, but such observations derive from studies based on few species, without phylogenetic control, and/or using only the RW mirror length. We carried out a phylogenetic comparative analysis involving 94 species of katydids to study the relationship between LW and RW components of the sound generator and the CF of the male's mating call, while taking into account body size and phylogenetic relationships. The results showed that CF negatively scaled with all morphological measures, but was most strongly related to components of the sound generation system (file, LW and RW mirrors). Interestingly, the LW mirror (reduced and nonfunctional) predicted CF more accurately than the RW mirror, and body size is not a reliable CF predictor. Gross primary production (GPP) is the largest flux in the carbon cycle, yet its response to global warming is highly uncertain. The temperature dependence of GPP is directly linked to photosynthetic physiology, but the response of GPP to warming over longer timescales could also be shaped by ecological and evolutionary processes that drive variation in community structure and functional trait distributions. Here, we show that selection on photosynthetic traits within and across taxa dampens the effects of temperature on GPP across a catchment of geothermally heated streams. Autotrophs from cold streams had higher photosynthetic rates and after accounting for differences in biomass among sites, biomass‐specific GPP was independent of temperature in spite of a 20 °C thermal gradient. Our results suggest that temperature compensation of photosynthetic rates constrains the long‐term temperature dependence of GPP, and highlights the importance of considering physiological, ecological and evolutionary mechanisms when predicting how ecosystem‐level processes respond to warming. 相似文献

Gas exchange and dry-weight production in Opuntia ficus-indica, a CAM species cultivated worldwide for its fruit and cladodes, were studied in 370 and 750 μmol mol−1 CO2 at three photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD: 5, 13 and 20 mol m−2 d−1). Elevated CO2 and PPFD enhanced the growth of basal cladodes and roots during the 12-week study. A rise in the PPFD increased the growth of daughter cladodes; elevated CO2 enhanced the growth of first-daughter cladodes but decreased the growth of the second-daughter cladodes produced on them. CO2 enrichment enhanced daily net CO2 uptake during the initial 8 weeks after planting for both basal and first-daughter cladodes. Water vapour conductance was 9 to 15% lower in 750 than in 370 μmol mol−1 CO2. Cladode chlorophyll content was lower in elevated CO2 and at higher PPFD. Soluble sugar and starch contents increased with time and were higher in elevated CO2 and at higher PPFD. The total plant nitrogen content was lower in elevated CO2. The effect of elevated CO2 on net CO2 uptake disappeared at 12 weeks after planting, possibly due to acclimation or feedback inhibition, which in turn could reflect decreases in the sink strength of roots. Despite this decreased effect on net CO2 uptake, the total plant dry weight at 12 weeks averaged 32% higher in 750 than in 370 μmol mol−1 CO2. Averaged for the two CO2 treatments, the total plant dry weight increased by 66% from low to medium PPFD and by 37% from medium to high PPFD. 相似文献

Streptomyces murayamensis carries two aspartate kinase (AK) genes: one for the biosynthesis of lysine, threonine, and methionine, and the other (nspJ) contained in the biosynthetic gene cluster for the secondary metabolite, 4-hydroxy-3-nitrosobenzamide, for catalyzing the first reaction. AKs involved in the biosynthesis of amino acids are often regulated allosterically by the end products. In the present study, we characterized NspJ to investigate whether AKs involved in secondary metabolism were also allosterically regulated. NspJ was in α2β2 and (α2β2)2 heterooligomeric forms, and was insensitive to all the compounds tested including lysine, threonine, and methionine. The reduction in the activity following the removal of ammonium sulfate, which induced subunit dissociation, suggests that the β subunit may be involved in stabilizing the structure of the α subunit in order to exhibit its activity. This study has provided the first example of a feedback-insensitive α2β2-type AK, which is involved in the secondary metabolism. 相似文献

Chlorella is a promising alternative resource of lutein (xanthophyll) production as it can be cultivated heterotrophically in fermentors.
In this paper, a kinetic model for lutein production by heterotrophic Chlorella pyrenoidosa was developed based on batch cultivations in 250-ml flasks and a 19-l fermentor. The model was validated by experimental
data from two fed-batch cultivations performed in the same fermentor. The dynamic behavior of lutein production by C. pyrenoidosa with various concentrations of glucose and nitrogen was analyzed based on the kinetic model. Model-based analyses suggested
that glucose concentrations between 5 and 24 g/l and nitrogen concentrations between 0.7 and 12 g/l during the cultivation
were favorable for lutein production by heterotrophic C. pyrenoidosa. It also showed that fed-batch cultivations are more suitable for efficient production of lutein than batch ones. The results

The scincid lizard Chalcides sexlineatus is endemic to the island of Gran Canaria, within which it shows a pronounced phylogeographical pattern. Understanding the maintenance of this pattern requires knowledge of nuclear DNA structuring. Eleven polymorphic tetranucleotide microsatellite loci were isolated from a library constructed from genomic DNA enriched for AAAG repeat sequence. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 12 to 19, and expected heterozygosities spanned from 0.738 to 0.933 (n = 30). The majority of these could be cross‐amplified in other endemic Canarian Chalcides. The loci will be used to investigate gene flow between the principal mitochondrial clades within C. sexlineatus. 相似文献
