A host specificity study conducted in South Africa between 2000 and 2004 showed that the leafhopper, Barela parvisaccata Young, performed as well on some of the indigenous Lippia spp. as on the target weed Lantana camara L. During adult no-choice tests, B. parvisaccata reproduced on eight species of the two closely related genera, Lantana and Lippia. Although B. parvisaccata has a restricted host range, its reproductive performance on the indigenous Lippia scaberrima Sond. during the adult multiple-choice tests was unacceptably high. It was therefore concluded that B. parvisaccata was not sufficiently host-specific to be released against L. camarara in Africa.

A survey was conducted todetermine the present status of five biocontrolagents established on Lantana camara L.(Verbenaceae) in South Africa. Three ofthe five agents, Calycomyza lantanae(Frick), Ophiomyia lantanae Froggatt andTeleonemia scrupulosa Stål areestablished throughout the range of L.camara. The two hispine beetles, Octotomascabripennis Guérin-Ménevilleand Uroplata girardi Pic are restrictedto the warm, subtropical regions in the easternrange of the weed, and are unable to cope withthe plants becoming seasonally leafless in dryand temperate areas. The two beetles and T. scrupulosa are rated as the most damagingagents on L. camara. The impact of O. lantanae is uncertain, and due to lowpopulations, the impact of C. lantanae isnegligible. Insect populations typicallyaccumulate to maximise their impact on plantsby midsummer, giving plants the opportunity tocompensate for the cumulative agent damageaccrued at the end of the previous growingseason. A number of parasitoids were rearedfrom U. girardi, O. lantanae andC. lantanae, but only those adapted toC. lantanae are expected to significantlyreduce its field density. The agents feed anddevelop on a wide range of lantana varieties, and where two or more varieties co-exist,insects occurred in equal abundance on thedifferent varieties. The importance of varietalpreferences appears to have beenover-estimated, but needs consideration whennew candidates are evaluated. The impact ofthese biocontrol agents is insufficient toreduce L. camara to a manageablesituation, and additional candidates arenecessary to control this weed in South Africa.

Two new olean-12-ene triterpenoids, camarolic acid (1) and lantrigloylic acid (2), have been isolated from the aerial parts of Lantana camara, along with ten known triterpenes, namely, camaric acid, lantanolic acid, lantanilic acid, pomolic acid, camarinic acid, lantoic acid, camarin, lantacin, camarinin, and ursolic acid. The new compounds have been characterized as 3,25-epoxy-3alpha-hydroxy-22beta-{[(S)-3-hydroxy-2-methylidenebutanoyl]oxy}olean-12-en-28-oic acid (1) and 3,25-epoxy-3alpha-hydroxy-22beta-[(3-methylbut-2-enoyl)oxy]olea-9(11),12-dien-28-oic acid (2) through spectroscopic studies and a chemical transformation. Seven of the constituents, namely pomolic acid, lantanolic acid, lantoic acid, camarin, lantacin, camarinin, and ursolic acid, were tested for nematicidal activity against root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita. Pomolic acid, lantanolic acid, and lantoic acid showed 100% mortality at 1 mg/ml concentration after 24 h, while camarin, lantacin, camarinin, and ursolic acid exhibited 100% mortality at this concentration after 48 h. These results are comparable to those obtained with the conventional nematicide furadan (100% mortality at 1 mg/ml concentration after 24 h).

Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae) is a weed of major importance in South Africa. It invades indigenous forests and veld, valuable commercial and agricultural forests, plantations and orchards, as well as river-catchment areas. Several natural enemies, including insect and pathogen species, have been released in South Africa, some of which established successfully. These do not exert sufficient control and additional natural enemies are required. Leptostales ignifera Warren (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), one of several new species being investigated as potential biocontrol agents, was collected in the subtropical parts of Florida, USA and Mexico. Host specificity trials indicated L. camara to be the preferred host plant of this quick-developing, voracious leaf-feeder, with some of the African indigenous Lippia species qualifying as very marginal hosts. The possible preference that L. ignifera might have for different South African naturalized L. camara varieties was studied during quarantine laboratory preference trials. Variety 029WP was the most suitable host for L. ignifera, although the other four tested varieties were able to support viable populations of the insect. Not taking other abiotic and biotic factors such as climate and predation into consideration, once released, L. ignifera should be able to establish on all five of the tested varieties in the field and contribute to the biological control of the complex of L. camara as a whole. Based on the above studies, permission has been granted for the release of L. ignifera in South Africa.

The russet mite, Aceria anthocoptes (Nal.), is the only eriophyid that has been recorded on Canada thistle, Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. It has been noted in several European countries and recently in the USA. With its apparent host specificity and because of the damage it causes to its host plant, A. anthocoptes is being studied as a potential candidate for classical biological control. The aim of the present study was to examine quantitative morphological traits in four populations of A. anthocoptes living on two infraspecific host plant taxa (C. arvense var. arvense and C. arvense var. vestitum) in two geographically separate areas of Serbia in order to test the hypothesis of absence of the possible host plant impact on mite morphology. MANOVA analysis revealed significant differences between populations from different localities in Serbia. Populations of A. anthocoptes inhabiting two thistle varieties in the vicinity of Belgrade differed significantly from mites inhabiting the same two host varieties in the vicinity of the town of Ivanjica. Canonical discriminant analysis showed that the trait which best discriminates the populations of A. anthocoptes is the number of dorsal annuli. It was not possible to ascribe morphological differences to the impact of the host plant.

Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. is a perennial herb indigenous to Eurasia that is now present throughout temperate regions of the world where it is considered one of the worst weeds of pastoral and agricultural systems. Classical biological control has been attempted in both North America (NA) and New Zealand (NZ). However, nearly 50 years after the first agent releases there are no indications of successful control. We review the status of the five agents deliberately released for control of C. arvense in NA and NZ, plus the species unintentionally introduced, and the occurrence of insects native to NA on C. arvense. We retrospectively evaluate C. arvense as a target weed, critique the agents selected for release, and contrast the different situations in NA and NZ. In retrospect, we see justification for the agents released in NA, but it is evident that these agents would not meet the more stringent host specificity requirements necessary to be released today. The failure of the program in NA is attributed to compromised safety, and lack of impact. Non-target impacts by one of the released agents, Rhinocyllus conicus, have raised safety concerns for native thistle plants. The other released agents either failed to establish, or if established, had no impact on the weed. In contrast, the situation in NZ is quite different because there are no related native thistles (Cardueae), and thus little chance of non-target impacts. Thus far, failure in NZ is attributed to lack of effectiveness due to non-establishment, or no impact, of released agents. In the past, the same agents that were released in NA were subsequently released in NZ, without considering whether or not these were the best choices. Thus, the past failure in NZ might be due to the previous lack of a NZ-specific approach to biocontrol of thistles in general and C. arvense in particular. A new approach taking into consideration the absence of native Cardueae has resulted in the release of agents more likely to be effective, and has potentially set NZ on track towards successful biological control of C. arvense, and other thistles.

The distribution and abundance of Ophiomyia camarae was determined in three ecological regions, i.e., highveld, middleveld, and lowveld of Swaziland. Within each region, sites were selected based on Lantana camara L. density, with 10 plants randomly chosen per sampling site. Ten leaves from each shrub were collected and assessed for any damage caused by the herringbone leaf-miner. Relative abundance, based on the number of shrubs damaged by the herringbone leaf-miner, was scored per site. Three lantana varieties were observed during the sampling period. There were significant differences in mean leaf damage due to leaf-miner activity between varieties (P=0.0162), with 46±4.89% leaves of the pale pink variety damaged compared to 23±5.56 and 21±3.53% leaves of the orange and pink varieties, respectively. While there were no restrictions in terms of distribution, the highest levels of O. camarae populations were observed in the middleveld (P=0.0012), suggesting that this region had the most suitable environmental conditions for this natural enemy. Overall, the abundance was significantly different between regions (P=0.006) and months (P=0.000), with April scoring the highest population levels. Based on our observations, the variation in environmental conditions has an influence on the activity of O. camarae, with the middleveld having the most suitable conditions
