The breeding biology of the Eurasian Kestrel Falco tinnunculusin nestboxes in farmland was studied to test for differences between artificial and natural sites. We report on the direct effect of nestbox provisioning on some life-history traits and how nestbox use affects nest predation and parasitism. Five types of nest-sites were available: nestboxes on poles and trees (artificial sites), stick nests on trees, stick nests on pylons and holes in buildings (‘natural’ sites). The Kestrel population increased from 23 pairs in 1993 (prior to nestbox installation) to 55 in 1998 as nestboxes were provided. In general, pairs breeding in trees started to lay later than those nesting in nestboxes on poles or in building holes, but this difference was probably associated with habitat quality rather than nest type. Differences in clutch size were found between nest-sites in some years, and were associated with laying date and, probably, with variation in territory quality. Using only data from successful nests, pairs breeding in nestboxes produce more fledglings than those in building holes or pylons. The frequency of nest predation was higher in natural sites than in nestboxes. The number of fledglings from pairs breeding in nestboxes was higher than from those breeding in old stick nests in trees when all nests were considered. Nestbox provisioning had no effect on the occurrence of the ectoparasite Carnus hemapterus, but chicks from nestboxes showed higher intensity of infection. Our results suggest that nestbox provisioning increases reproductive success and the frequency of nest predation or intensity of parasite infestation in Kestrels.  相似文献

Vagrant non-breeding ravens frequently attract conspecifics to rich ephemeral food sources. There, grouping may allow them to overcome the defence of territorial breeders. Here, we focus on ravens making use of regular food supplies in a game park, where they divert food from the provision of park animals. We investigated if ravens foraging in the Cumberland game park (Grünau, Austria) are attentive towards one another when they experience some unpredictability in food provisioning. We confronted a group of 30–50 ravens with two different treatments. Ten minutes ahead of the feeding of either wolves or wild boars we showed buckets containing pieces of meat to the ravens flying overhead. In the reliable cue treatment (RCT), the meat was placed next to one of the two enclosures, whereas in the unreliable cue treatment (UCT), the buckets were placed simultaneously in front of both enclosures though only in one of the enclosures were the animals fed 10 min later. Thus, during RCT but not during UCT, ravens could predict where food would become available. Only during UCT, ravens moved in large groups between the two feeding sites. Many ravens moving at the same time in the same direction may indicate some co-ordination in space and time, which is most likely achieved by social attraction among individuals. Furthermore, the number of ravens approaching and leaving, respectively, a feeding site cross-correlated with a temporary increase in the rate of a food-associated call, the yell. This suggests that in addition to watching each other, calling may have contributed to group formation. Possible benefits of group formation during food inspection are discussed. Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis is a powerful tool for population genetics, pedigree reconstruction and phenotypic trait mapping. However, the untapped potential of SNP markers to discriminate the sex of individuals in species with reduced sexual dimorphism or of individuals during immature stages remains a largely unexplored avenue. Here, we developed a novel protocol for molecular sexing of birds based on the detection of unique Z- and W-linked SNP markers. Our method is based on the identification of two unique loci, one in each sexual chromosome. Individuals are considered males when they show no calls for the W-linked SNP and are heterozygous or homozygous for the Z-linked SNP, while females exhibit both Z- and W-linked SNP calls. We validated the method in the Jackdaw (Corvus monedula). The reduced sexual dimorphism in this species makes it difficult to identify the sex of individuals in the wild. We assessed the reliability of the method using 36 individuals of known sex and found that their sex was correctly assigned in 100% of cases. The sex-linked markers also proved to be widely applicable for discriminating males and females from a sample of 927 genotyped individuals at different maturity stages, with an accuracy of 99.5%. Since SNP markers are increasingly used in quantitative genetic analyses of wild populations, the approach we propose has great potential to be integrated into broader genetic research programmes without the need for additional sexing techniques.  相似文献

Capsule We report large declines among summer populations between 1968–80 and 2000.

Aim To assess changes in the status of breeding populations of birds in pastoral uplands.

Methods Volunteer observers revisited 13 areas of marginal upland in Britain where Common Birds Census data were collected during 1968–80. This allowed the status of 35 bird species to be examined over about 20 years and to make a comparison between grassland-based and woodland-based species.

Results For 12 species the decline in abundance was significant, particularly among passerines, such as Skylark Alauda arvensis, Wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe, Whinchat Saxicola rubetra, Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava and Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella, each of which declined by over 80%. Redshank Tringa totanus, Yellow Wagtail, Dipper Cinclus cinclus, Whinchat, Wheatear, Ring Ouzel Turdus torquatus and Yellowhammer were found on less than half the number of plots on which they were originally recorded. Most declining species were associated with grassland for nesting and foraging, compared to those species that increased (Wood Pigeon Columba palumbus, Pied Wagtail Motacilla alba, Carrion Crow Corvus corone, Jackdaw C. monedula and Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis) that were less specialized in their habitat requirements. Woodland or woodland edge species showed no significant change in status, suggesting that population declines among grassland species were not due to lower observer effort between recording periods.

Conclusion Long-term changes to grassland ecosystems in marginal upland areas of Britain may have influenced the status of bird populations.  相似文献

The ecology of the nocturnal black shore skink, Leiolopisma suteri, was studied on a boulder beach at Cable Bay, Motutapu Island, for 19 months. Distributions over a stable beach (Motutapu Island) and an exposed beach (Cuvier Island) were compared, and the effects of storms on the Cable Bay population were noted. Density, aggression, thermal preference, feeding, and fat reserve fluctuations were also studied. The L. suteri population at Cable Bay has, in favourable areas, one of the highest densities (13/m2) recorded for a lizard species. Spatial distribution of this population varies between the different age classes: adults congregate in the most stable areas, whereas hatchlings are commonest in the least stable areas. Storms cause changes in the beach structure and in the spatial limits of the population.  相似文献

Dropping live mussels (Mytilus sp.) onto hard substrata by Carrion Crows (Corvus corone) and Hooded Crows (Corvus cornix) to access their flesh is a commonly observed behavior from late summer to spring in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Despite previous studies, several aspects of prey‐dropping behavior remained incompletely understood. From September 2008 to January 2010, we determined the heights of drops, likelihood of shell breakage from drops at different heights, effect of mussel size on breakability, energetic costs of flying to drop heights, and the energetic costs of transporting mussels from mussel beds to dropping sites. We studied Carrion Crows on the Isle of Cumbrae, Scotland, and Hooded Crows in Cork Harbor, Ireland. Initial experiments were carried out with mussels to determine breakability in relation to size and drop height, and to estimate mussel energy content. Sizes of mussel shells at Hooded Crow dropping sites were compared with those of live mussels from source mussel beds. Adult Carrion Crows (N = 10) dropped mussels from a mean height of 4.7 m, and adult Hooded Crows (N = 21) from 4.8 m. These heights were close to the minimum (4–4.8 m; determined experimentally) required to break all mussel shells on the first drop. Dropping mussels from the minimum height that guarantees breakage reduces handling time and, by minimizing the size of the resulting debris field, likely reduces the risk of kleptoparasitism. Juvenile Hooded Crows (N = 13) dropped mussels onto suboptimal substrates (gravelly mud) from variable heights (mean = 6.1 m) with a low success rate (0% on first drop). This inefficiency could reflect either inexperience or exclusion from prime hard‐substrate dropping sites by adults. Foraging Hooded Crows selected larger mussels, dropping no mussels <32‐mm shell length. Energetic calculations indicate that a Hooded Crow lifting a medium‐sized mussel (55‐mm shell length) to a height of 5 m incurs a cost of only 0.3% of energy assimilated from that mussel, whereas travel to and from a mussel bed 200 m away costs 5.8% of that energy. These results suggest that choice of mussel dropping height by crows is determined by shell breakability rather than the cost of flying up to the dropping height.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Although survivable injuries have been documented in several species of birds, little is known about the social and reproductive consequences of such injuries. We examined relationships between injuries and group composition, reproductive output, and paternity of male breeders in 27 family groups of American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) using 96 broods sampled from 2004 to 2009. Injuries and permanent disfigurement of wings or feet were sustained by 25.9% (7/27) of dominant male breeders. Injured male breeders had smaller broods (2.13 vs. 3.38 nestlings per brood for injured vs. uninjured breeders), lost more paternity (48% vs. 13% extrapair young per brood), and had more adult male auxiliaries in their groups (1.63 vs. 0.65 auxiliaries per group) than uninjured birds. Some of the variation in reproductive partitioning, extrapair paternity rates, and group composition among American Crow family groups can therefore be explained by injuries to male breeders. These results suggest that injuries could account for some of the unexplained variation in the rates and distribution of extrapair paternity across populations and taxa, as well as some of the variation in reproductive skew among cooperatively breeding birds.  相似文献

Spectrograms of calls given by Carrion and Hooded Crows in the Italian Alpine hybrid zone have been tested for differences between the two subspecies by univariate and multivariate techniques. Vocalizations of the two Crows are similar and composed of 2–15 caws, each usually made up of two harmonics, separated by short intervals. However, one-way ANOVA and discriminant analysis showed that they were differentiated with respect both to temporal and frequency parameters. We suggest that differences in vocalizations reflect mostly the phylogenetic divergence between Hooded and Carrion Crows. The results are in keeping with previous ecological, morphological and molecular data and would confirm that the present designation of the two Crows as distinct subspecies is correct. Differences in vocalizations, together with others regarding ecology and behaviour, may result in assortative mating and homotypic flocking and, therefore, may contribute to reinforcement of the reproductive isolation between the Carrion and the Hooded Crow in the Alpine hybrid zone.  相似文献
