Trap sampling over reefs in deep (mean = 20 m) and shallow (mean = 10 m) waters along c. 1500 km of coastline in tropical north‐western Australia during both day and night and in wet and dry periods yielded 23 377 fishes, representing 32 families, 58 genera and 119 species. Individuals of the Serranidae, Lutjanidae, Lethrinidae and Carangidae contributed 88·9% to the total catch. The ichthyofaunal compositions of the Kimberley, Canning and Pilbara bioregions were relatively discrete. Species composition was influenced far more by location (latitude) than by water depth, period and time of day, and underwent a gradational change southwards. The latter change reflected differences in the trends exhibited by the relative abundances of certain species with increasing latitude and the confinement of other species largely to particular regions. The three most abundant species, i.e. Lethrinus sp. 3, Lutjanus carponotatus and Lethrinus laticaudis contributed 34·8, 20·8 and 11·6% to the total catch, respectively. The first species was rarely recorded in the two most northern locations and was abundant in the four most southern locations, whereas the last two species were relatively more abundant in northern than in southern locations. Lutjanus bitaeniatus and Lutjanus johnii were found exclusively at the two locations in the Kimberley region, whereas Abalistes stellatus, Pentapodus emeryii and Lethrinus nebulosus were not caught in this region but were found in both locations of the Canning and Pilbara regions. The species composition in deep and shallow waters at each location almost invariably differed significantly between day and night and between dry and wet periods, with species such as L. bitaeniatus, L. johnii, Lutjanus sebae and A. stellatus being more abundant over deep reefs, whereas L. carponotatus, L. laticaudis, Siganus fuscescens and Lethrinus lentjan were more numerous over shallow reefs. Species such as L. johnii and Lethrinus atkinsoni were relatively more important in night‐time than daytime catches, whereas the reverse applied to Lethrinus lentjan, L. laticaudis and Choerodon cyanodus. Lethrinus sp. 3 and L. laticaudis were relatively more important in catches during the dry than wet period.  相似文献

The effect of the antibiotics thiostrepton and micrococcin on EF-Tu-catalyzed (ribosome-dependent) GTP hydrolysis in the presence of A-Phe, C-A-Phe, or C-C-A-Phe (related to the sequence of the 3′-terminus of aminoacyl-tRNA)(System I) or by methanol (‘uncoupled GTPase’, System II) was investigated. In System I, thiostrepton increases the binding affinities of the effectors to the EF-Tu·GTP·70 S ribosome complex, as well as the extent of the GTP hydrolysis, while the KGTPm is virtually unchanged. Similarly, in the uncoupled system (System II) and in the absence of effectors, thiostrepton significantly increases VGTPmax, whereas KGTPm remains unaffected. Micrococcin is without any effect in both systems. The ‘uncoupled GTPase’ (in System II) is also strongly inhibited by C-A-Phe. The results indicate the crucial role of the EF-Tu site which binds the aminoacylated C-C-A terminus of aminoacyl-tRNA in promoting GTP hydrolysis. It follows that the binding of the model effectors (such as C-C-A-Phe) to that site is favorably influenced by the interaction of thiostrepton with the 50 S ribosomal subunit, whereas thiostrepton, per se, does not influence the affinity of EF-Tu for GTP.  相似文献

In patients suffering from Parkinson's disease (PD), we analyzed correlations between the parameters of contingent negative variation (CNV) and data of variational pulsometry (according to the measurements of R-R ECG intervals). Studies were carried out on 35 patients (group PD), 49 to 74 years old, with the stage of disease of 1.5 to 3.0 according to the Hoehn-Yahr international classification. In the course of CNV recording (i.e., in the state of a certain functional loading), we observed significant negative correlations between the integral magnitude (area) of this potential and indices of variational pulsometry (RMSSD, SDNN, C. var, and HF) that characterize the intensity of parasympathetic (respiratory) influences on the cardiovascular system. In the control group, such correlations were absent. We found significant correlations between the autonomic balance, CNV magnitude, and stage of PD reflecting the level of generalization of the pathological process. In the subgroup of patients with the PD stage 1.5 to 2.0, significant changes in the mean values of indices of parasympathetic influences during recording of the CNV were not observed, while in another subgroup (the PD stage 2.5 to 3.0), these values increased significantly (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01). If the estimates of the PD stage were low, the CNV area demonstrated greater values (P < 0.01). The disturbance of coordination of muscle-to-muscle interactions in the PD group is, probably, an important factor responsible for parasympathetic dysregulation and suppression of the CNV generation. We found positive correlation between the intensity of parasympathetic influences in the course of CNV recording and the level of postural disorders (r = 0.37, P < 0.05). On the contrary, the CNV magnitude demonstrated a negative correlation with the intensity of these disorders (r = −0.36, P < 0.05), as well as with the level of postural instability (r = −0.55, P < 0.001). We hypothesize that alterations of the autonomic balance and the activity of those cerebral structures, which are responsible for the motor readiness, result, to a significant extent, from weakening of the activity of the noradrenergic system due to degenerative processes developing in cells of the locus coeruleus. The impairment of the latter structure, together with degeneration of neurons of the substantia nigra and a decrease in the level of nigro-striatal dopamine, underlies the pathomorphological pattern of PD. Synopsis Experiments were carried out to study the feeding rates of the predator fish Therapon jarbua (Forsk) on mullet juveniles, before and after treatment with DDT. Mullet juveniles treated with a subacute concentration, were refused by the control predators, whereas predators treated with a subacute concentration consumed more mullet juveniles. In the present study crescent perch T. jarbua were exposed to subacute and acute concentrations of DDT, and their behaviour was compared with that of the control predators. There were changes in oriented behaviour and co-ordinated movements, and in feeding, aggression and comfort behaviour of the fish. Inflammation in the gills, and caudal fin serration, were noticed in treated fishes. The findings presented here throw light on fundamental pathways by which pollutants interact with the behaviour of fishes.  相似文献

A developmentally homogeneous neural crest cell population has been used to assay the role of environmental factors in regulating crest cell differentiation. If cultured on tissue culture plastic, virtually all of the cells of this population differentiate into melanocytes. In contrast, when these cells are cultured for 3 or more days on substrata “conditioned” by somite fibroblasts, the proportion of cells undergoing melanogenesis decreased and the proportion expressing formaldehyde-induced fluorescence (FIF), characteristic of catecholamine-containing cells, increased. For a limited period of culture on somite-conditioned substrata, some cells in the population exhibit both pigment granules and fluorescence. Collagen-coated substrata decreased the number of cells that formed pigment but did not stimulate FIF. In contrast, optimum doses of exogenous cellular fibronectin mimicked the effect of somite-conditioned substrata, suppressing melanogenesis and promoting FIF. Glycosaminoglycan-derivatized substrata (i.e., hyaluronic acid, various chondroitin sulfate preparations, and heparin) did not alter the differentiative homogeneity of the cultured crest cell populations. The choice and expression of phenotype by some members of a cultured crest cell population can, therefore, be affected by environmental stimuli provided in the form of certain substrate-attached macromolecules. We suggest that optimal concentrations of some extracellular matrix components produced by embryonic tissue and normally encountered by migrating crest cells may elicit the expression of FIF in crest cells that would otherwise follow a different developmental pathway.  相似文献

Variable levels of acetic anhydride have been recommended for addition to one of two reagents used in the glyoxylic acid method for the determination of tryptophan. For use of this reagent immediately after preparation it was shown that a minimum of 16% (v/v) of acetic anhydride should be included in the formulation to obtain near-maximum sensitivity. It was further demonstrated that reagent formulations with and without acetic anhydride changed with exposure to light. The observed changes are manifest as changes in the relative sensitivities of the assay. Several modifications are recommended to improve the sensitivity and stability of the acetic anhydride-containing reagent in this assay.  相似文献

As an extension of our previous work we not only evaluated the relationship between acidosis and lipid peroxidation in rat's kidney homogenate, but also determined for the first time the potential anti-oxidant activity of diphenyl diselenide, diphenyl ditelluride and ebselen at a range of pH values (7.4–5.4). Because of the pH dependency of iron redox cycling, pH and iron need to be well controlled and for the reason we tested a number of pH values (from 7.4 to 5.4) to get a closer idea about the role of iron under various pathological conditions. Acidosis increased rate of lipid peroxidation in the absence Fe (II) in kidney homogenates especially at pH 5.4. This higher extent of lipid peroxidation can be explained by; the mobilized iron which may come from reserves where it is weakly bound. Addition of iron (Fe) chelator desferoxamine (DFO) to reaction medium completely inhibited the peroxidation processes at all studied pH values including acidic values (5.8–5.4). In the presence of Fe (II) acidosis also enhanced detrimental effect of Fe (II) especially at pH (6.4–5.4). Diphenyl diselenide significantly protected lipid peroxidation at all studied pH values, while ebselen offered only a small statistically non-significant protection. The highest anti-oxidant potency was observed for diphenyl ditelluride. These differences in potencies were explained by the mode of action of these compounds using their catalytic anti-oxidant cycles. However, changing the pH of the reaction medium did not alter the anti-oxidant activity of the tested compounds. This study provides evidence for acidosis catalyzed oxidative stress in kidney homogenate and for the first time anti-oxidant potential of diphenyl diselenide and diphenyl ditelluride not only at physiological pH but also at a range of acidic values.  相似文献

Activation of the sympathetic system by phencyclidine (PCP) should result in catecholamine release from the adrenals. However, adrenalectomy does not reduce PCP-induced hypertension. In an attempt to rectify this inconsistency, the direct effects of PCP on the bovine adrenal medulla were examined. At (3×10?6M), PCP reduced the acetylcholine-(ACh)-induced catecholamine release by 50%. Surprisingly, barium-induced secretion of catecholamines was also reduced by PCP. ACh-induced catecholamine release was not altered by 10?3M 4-aminopyridine (4 AP), the potassium channel blocker. Thus, calcium antagonist actions of PCP and consequent block of catecholamine secretion from adrenal medulla may explain the lack of effect of adrenalectomy on PCP-induced hypertension. Possible contributions of calcium and/or potassium channel blockade to other manifestations of PCP overdosage are discussed.  相似文献

The interaction of several N-acetyl-d-glucosamine analogs and of sialyl lactose with the lectin wheat germ agglutinin was studied by nuclear magnetic resonance. N-2H3-acetyl-d-gluocosamine was synthesized and found to displace the N-acetyl methyl signal toward its free chemical shift in N-acetylglucosamine and N-acetylneuraminic acid demonstrating common binding sites for the latter two compounds. The N-acetyl methyl signal of the α-methylglucoside of N-acetylglucosamine could be titrated but a 3-deoxy analog could not, the latter exhibiting very weak binding and demonstrating the importance of the 3-OH group in the binding process. Sialyl lactose (an N-acetylneuraminic acid analog) was rather tightly bound to the lectin. N-F3-acetyl-d-glucosamine was synthesized and its binding to the lectin was studied at pH 4, 4.5, 5.1 by 19F NMR. The two anomers were found to bind with nearly equal Kd′s but exhibited a pH and anomer dependent Δ (total bound chemical shift). The -CF3 analog was found to bind considerably stronger to the lectin than the -CH3 compound. The clear resolution of the α and β anomers of this molecule make it a very useful probe of the lectin binding site.  相似文献
