Application of fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry to chlorogenic acids

The technique of positive- and negative-ion fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry has been shown to be capable of producing molecular mass and useful fragmentation information for the structural elucidation of chlorogenic acids. The mass spectra of chlorogenic acid and the related compounds 3′-O-methylchlorogenic acid, neochlorogenic acid, 4,5-dicaffeoyl quinic acid and 1,5-dicaffeoyl quinic acid are compared with those obtained by electron impact mass spectrometry.     

Lignans from Piper cubeba

From the hot petrol extract of Piper cubeba ftuits, six lignans were isolated. Two of these, which have been obtained from a natural source for the first time, have been characterized as (2R,3R)-2-(3″,4″,5″-trimethoxybenzyl)-3-(3′,4′-methylenedioxybenzyl)-1,4-butanediol [(?)-dihydroclusin] and (3R,4R)-3,4-bis-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl)tetra-hydro-2-furanol [(?)-cubebinin]. (?)Cubebin, (?)-hinokinin, (?)-clusin and (?)-dihydrocubebin were also found in this plant. Only (?)-cubebin has been reported so far from this source.     

Phytotoxins from Alternaria helianthi: radicinin,and the structures of deoxyradicinol and radianthin

A novel compound, radianthin, with phytotoxic activity was isolated from liquid cultures of Alternaria helianthi and identified as a pyrone related to radicinin. A second metabolite was identified as radicinin itself while deoxyradicinol is described for the first time as a natural product.     

Specific detection of α-amylase activity in crude plant extracts after isoelectric focusing

A new method which utilizes Procion Red MX 2B amylopectin for the detection of α-amylase in crude plant extracts is described. The substrate is specific only against α-amylase hydrolysis and β-amylase does not attack it. Paper containing Procion Red MX 2B amylopectin applied to gels after isoelectric focusing reveals α-amylase isoenzymes as white bands. When this technique is used, heat-inactivation of β-amylase is not required.     

Hirsutinolides,glaucolides and sesquiterpene lactone from Vernonia species

The investigation of nine Vernonia species afforded in addition to known sesquiterpenes 28 new ones. The structures were elucidated by high field ¹H NMR spectroscopy and the configurations were determined by NOE difference spectroscopy and, in one case, by X-ray analysis. The results indicated that configurations of several previously reported sesquiterpene lactones have had to be revised. In addition to known types two new ones, the jalcaguaianolides and the vernojalcanolides, are described. Furthermore some unusual reaction products are presented which, in part, led to some natural occurring lactones.     

Diterpenoids from Caesalpinia pulcherrima

Three new furanoditerpenoids of the caesalpin-type have been isolated from the roots of Caesalpinia pulcherrima. The structures of these compounds, vouacapen-5α-ol, 6β-cinnamoyl-7β-hydroxy-vouacapen-5α-ol and 8,9,11,14-didehydrovouacapen-5α-ol, were elucidated through interpretation of their spectral data. Sitosterol was also obtained.     

Prenylated bianthrones and vismione F from Psorospermum febrifugum

The roots of Psorospermum febrifugum collected in Malawi contained together with the known vismione D and geranyloxyemodin four new compounds: vismione F and the three bianthrones A₁, A_3a and A_3b. All the isolated compounds contained C- or O-geranyl substituents and showed a close biogenetic relationship.     

Review article number 6 : Plant molluscicides

A review on the application of plant molluscicides in the control of schistosomiasis is presented. Laboratory bioassays are discussed, together with criteria for activity. An attempt has been made to provide a comprehensive list of known molluscicidal natural products.     

Kinetic properties of IAA oxidase from mung bean cotyledons

A crude enzyme preparation from mung bean cotyledons was separated into peroxidative and non-peroxidative IAA oxidase on a DEAE-cellulose column. Both fractions differed in their pH optima, K_m and V_max. The K_m and V_max of non-peroxidative IAA oxidase were higher than those of peroxidative IAA oxidase. Peroxidative IAA oxidase showed a linear increase in absorption at 247 and 254 nm after a short lag of 2–3 min. The addition of catalytic amounts of hydrogen peroxide eliminated the lag period and also enhanced the rate of IAA degradation. The non-peroxidative IAA oxidase fraction, however, did not exhibit any significant increase in absorption at 247 and 254 nm and showed a lag period of 5 min which was not affected by hydrogen peroxide. Instead, addition of the same catalytic amount of hydrogen peroxide inhibited the rate of IAA degradation. The peroxidative IAA oxidase fraction exhibited the reaction kinetics characteristic of peroxidase-catalysed IAA degradation. The rate of IAA oxidation by purified non-peroxidative IAA oxidase was very low. The slow rate of catalysis shown by non-peroxidative IAA oxidase appears to be due to the presence of inhibitor(s).     

The effect of air-borne ammonium sulphate onPinus nigra var.maritima in the Netherlands

Summary As a result of air pollution, considerable deposition of ammonium sulphate occurs on vegetation and soil in the vicinity of chicken farms and fields dressed with animal slurry. A clear relation exists between this ammonium sulphate deposition and the distance to certain agricultural activities. Field investigations and ecophysiological experiments both show that the needles ofPinus nigra var.maritima (Ait.) Melville take up ammonium and excrete potassium, magnesium and calcium. This often results in potassium and/or magnesium deficiencies and may lead to premature shedding of needles. The high levels of nitrogen in the needles are strongly correlated to fungal diseases.Whether the observed cation leaching will result in disturbed nutrient budgets depends mainly on soil conditions. Leaching of K, Mg and Ca from the soil, caused by ammonium sulphate, may further inhibit nutrient uptake.Field investigations show a clear correlation between increased ratios of NH₄ to K, Mg and Ca in the soil solution and the damage to pine forests.
