The solubility of calcium, magnesium, and zinc in model solutions based on the low molecular weight components of bovine and human milks was examined over a pH range similar to that found in the human digestive system. Zinc was removed from solution in all models as calcium phosphates precipitated. The pH at which precipitable calcium phosphates formed was altered by the concentration of inorganic phosphate. All calcium and zinc in a model based on human milk remain in solution up to pH 6.5 while in a model based on bovine milk they were in solution up to pH 5. The use of simple model solutions may provide information useful for understanding the different bioavailabilities of minerals from skimmed bovine and human milks.  相似文献

The model described is an extension of a previous model of the optic tectum (Arbib & Lara, 1982; Lara, Arbib & Cromarty, 1982; Lara & Arbib, 1982) and takes into consideration anatomical, physiological and behavioral studies in anurans, as well as earlier modelling efforts (Ewert & Von Seelen, 1974; Didday, 1976). Computer simulations were conducted to analyze how interactions among retina, optic tectum and pretectum may give frogs and toads the ability to discriminate between prey and predator stimuli. Results from simulations have allowed us to reproduce empirical observations, to suggest new experiments, and to postulate what neural mechanisms might be involved in some phenomena related to prey-catching orienting behavior, with direction invariance of prey-predator recognition being a consequence of tectal architecture, and size preference and response latency depending on the motivational state of the animal.  相似文献

Plasma and urinary levels of MHPG were determined in six normal volunteers. Samples were obtained at 3-hour intervals for plasma and at 12-hour intervals for urine. Acrophase, amplitude and period were determined for plasma MHPG levels. A sinusoidal pattern was obtained for diurnal plasma MHPG with a peak at 15:00 hrs. +/- 46 min. Urinary MHPG, corrected for creatinine levels, correlated with both 9 AM plasma MHPG and with baseline plasma MHPG. Furthermore, the relationship between plasma and urinary MHPG was linear when the rhythm of urinary levels was assumed to lag 6.2 hours behind the plasma rhythm. It was concluded that free MHPG is evenly distributed in the total body space and that conjugated MHPG is largely restricted to the blood.  相似文献

Arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism by infarcted canine myocardium was studied and correlated with matched histologic analyses following permanently occluded or reperfused infarction. Histologic analysis of tissues from reperfused infarcts showed a marked acceleration of inflammatory cell invasion and of granulation tissue formation when compared to the occlusive infarct. In the reperfused infarct, polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) were very prominent at one day after infarction while in the occlusive infarcts the neutrophilic invasion was less intense but more sustained. At one day following reperfused infarction the major arachidonate product, which co-migrated by thin layer chromatography with the mono-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (HETEs), was significantly elevated (254 ± 49 pmoles/gm wet weight, n=3) when compared to normal tissue (48 ± 6 pmoles/gm n=19). This occured at a time when the number of PMNs was maximal in the infarcted tissue. Addition of the calcium ionophore A23187 caused a further marked stimulation in HETE production in the one day reperfused infarct but not at the other time points studied. The production of HETE was not significantly different in the infarcted tissue than in the normal tissue at three and seven days following reperfused infarction or at one, three, or seven days after occlusive infarction. The identity of this HETE product was investigated using reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and found to be predominantly 12 - hydroxy - 5,8,10,14 - eicosatetraenoic acid (12-HETE) with a small amount of 15-HETE. Thus the production of 12-HETE parallels the number of neutrophils invading the infarcted area of the heart.  相似文献

Two experiments examined the effect of food deprivation on choice in a discrete-trials self-control paradigm, choice between a larger, more-delayed reinforcer and a smaller, less-delayed reinforcer. In Experiment 1, four pigeons were each deprived to 65%, 80%, and 90% of their free-feeding weights, and the delay to the smaller reinforcer was varied. Deprivation level did not affect choice, but the rate of ineffective key pecks made during the reinforcer delays increased as deprivation increased. In Experiment 2, four pigeons were exposed to conditions in which they were fed up to their 80% free-feeding weights following experimental sessions, and in which they were given no postsession feedings. Both the pigeons' weights and their latencies to insert their heads into the food hopper when food was available were lower when the pigeons were not fed following experimental sessions. Choice showed no change. Deprivation level affects response rate and eating behavior in these procedures, but not choice.  相似文献

Spleen cells from WF rats immunized to allogeneic lymphoid cells or to syngeneic colon carcinomas and from unimmunized controls were separated by countercurrent distribution in aqueous two-phase systems. The cells were assayed for cytotoxicity to allogeneic fibroblasts or syngeneic colon carcinoma cells and to syngeneic fibroblasts in a 24-hr 51Cr-release assay. Cells from immunized rats which selectively lysed the specific target cells were repeatedly found in one area of the distribution separate from the majority of cells, which nonselectively lysed syngeneic fibroblasts as well. A similar subpopulation which nonselectively lysed all target cells assayed was recovered from the spleens of unimmunized rats. The cells were also assayed for the ability to lyse antibody-coated thymocytes in a 4-hr 51Cr-release assay. The peak of K cells was found to overlap partially that of cells with nonselective cytotoxicity.  相似文献

Parenchymal cells from normal adult rat liver, prepared with high yield (30 × 106 cells/g liver) and viability index (>96%) by a non-perfusion method, were maintained in non-proliferating monolayer culture. Several metabolic functions were investigated for 7 days to evaluate functional integrity of the cultured hepatocytes. Leucine was linearly incorporated into protein for 4.5 h at each day of cultivation and the incorporation rate increased up to 2-fold after 3 days. Urea production was maintained at a rate of 0.5 μmoles/mg protein × h for at least 7 days, and its amount was enhanced 2-fold within 24 h by the addition of 3 mM NH4Cl. Glucose was formed during the first days by the hepatocytes and was then taken up with increasing amount from the surrounding medium. Lactate consumption, on the other hand, was replaced by lactate production after one day of cultivation.Variations in enzyme levels of lactate dehydrogenase, arginase, glutamine synthetase and glucose-6-phosphatase were also studied during the whole culture period. Cell leakage, which was detected only in the case of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), occurred through the 4th day along with a concomitant loss of intracellular LDH activity. After 4 days, however, the enzyme activity returned to the initial level. Arginase was maintained throughout the cultivation period and was stimulated 2- to 3-fold within 24 h by NH4Cl. Glutamine synthetase declined within the first 4 h of cultivation and then remained in the hepatocytes with a transitory rise after 2 days. Its activity was also found to be inversely related to the concentration of glutamine in the culture medium up to 4 mM. Glucose-6-phosphatase gradually decreased during the cultivation period, the enzyme activity, however, was stimulated by glucagon within 24 h.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the conditions under which estrogen would promote male-like aggressive behavior in female mice. The results of the first experiment showed that most females chronically exposed to testosterone propionate (TP) in adulthood fought, whereas females similarly treated with estradiol benzoate (EB) did not display aggression. Another experiment found that, when either TP or EB was administered on the day of birth, adult females displayed aggression in response to daily EB injections during adult life. Also, the potentiating effect of neonatal hormone exposure declined over the first 12 days postpartum, as 100% of the Day 0, 75% of the Day 6, and 0% of the Day 12 and 18 TP-treated females fought in response to daily injections of 40 μg of EB in adulthood. The final study showed that, under the test conditions employed, the failure of a chronic adult EB regimen to promote aggression was not due to a competing tendency to display female sexual behavior.  相似文献

High pressure liquid chromatography using a prepacked commercial strong anion exchanger column (mu Partisil 10 SAX, 25 cm x 4.6 mm) was used to separate a mixture of eight estrogen conjugates. Chromatographic conditions using a 0.01 M potassium phosphate or 0.1 M NaCl as solvent in the isocratic mode are described for the separation of estrone glucosiduronate, 17beta-estradiol-3-glucosiduronate, 17beta-estradiol-17-glucosiduronate, estriol-3-glucosiduronate, estriol-16alpha-glucosiduronate, estriol-17-glucosiduronate, estrone sulfate and 17beta-estradiol-3-sulfate. This system gives high resolution of the estrogen conjugates in small eluent volumes in less than 30 min. The advantages of this high pressure liquid chromatographic system over other methods of separation are discussed.  相似文献
