Prey consumption rates of piscivorous brown trout Salmo trutta were studied in the Pasvik watercourse, which forms the border between Norway and Russia. Estimates of food consumption in the field were similar to or slightly less than maximum values from a bioenergetic model. The piscivore diet consisted mainly of vendace Coregonus albula with a smaller number of whitefish Coregonus lavaretus . Individual brown trout had an estimated mean daily intake of c . 1·5 vendace and 0·4 whitefish, and a rapid annual growth increment of 7–8 cm year−1. The total population of brown trout >25 cm total length was estimated as 8445 individuals (0·6 individuals ha−1), giving a mean ±  s . e . annual consumption of 1553880 ± 405360 vendace and 439140 ± 287130 whitefish for the whole watercourse. The rapid growth in summer of brown trout >25 cm indicated a high prey consumption rate.  相似文献

The growth of 1-year-old Arctic cisco ( Coregonus autumnalis ) was monitored under laboratory conditions for fish acclimated to one of two temperatures (5 and 10° C) and one of five salinities (6, 12, 18,24, 30‰). Fish were maintained for 43 days at rations of 3% wet body weight per day at 5° C and 5% wet body weight per day at 10° C, with rations adjusted for weight gain every 7–12 days. Fish increased 9–11% in length and 55–71% in weight at 5° C, and 23–27% in length and 141–161% in weight at 10° C. Length and weight increased linearly over 43 days. There was a statistically significant effect of temperature on growth but no statistically significant effect of salinity. Higher growth rates at 10° C were partially attributable to significantly greater gross conversion efficiency at the higher temperature. Over the course of the experiment, the condition (weight per unit length) of all fish increased by 3·2 to 63·6% at 5° C and by 5·6 to 46·0% at 10° C. There was no discernible effect of salinity on condition at either temperature. These results demonstrate that, with salinity acclimation and high food ration, 1-year-old Arctic cisco can grow at equivalent rates across salinities ranging from 6 to 30‰. The ecological implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis An experiment to identify the point of no return of fish alevins and larvae has been made using the proteolytic activity as an index. Larvae of Coregonus pollan and Salmo gairdneri were starved or fed with zooplankton as a control and proteolytic enzymes measured. Studies had been carried out on the local non-migratory whitefish. Spawning behaviour and light conditions on the spawning ground are recorded. After artificial spawning, embryonal development took place under controlled conditions and the larvae were reared. Detailed characteristics of swim bladder creation and differentiation of the digestive tract are given. Distribution and number of pollan larvae near the spawning area and in the open lake were examined. Data are presented concerning the growth rates of larvae and fry in captivity and under lake conditions. Ecological data related to other coregonids are discussed and compared with the present study.  相似文献

Two types of molecular genetic markers were used for genetic identification of species and local stocks of palearctic coregonids (Coregonidae, Salmoniformes, Teleostei). Seven nominate species of whitefishes and ciscoes Coregonus , spp. of Eurasia Arctic Sea basin and inconnu Stenodus leucichthys nelma , represented by specimens from North America were studied. Using restriction analysis of PCR-amplified products of the ND-1 gene of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and allelic composition at several allozyme loci discrimination was successful between C. lavaretus pidschian , Siberian whitefish, C. nasus , broad whitefish, C. autumnalis , Arctic cisco, C. migratorius , Baikal omul, C. peled , peled, and C. sardinella , least cisco. Muksun C. muksun , was indistinguishable from Siberian whitefish. Creatine kinase (CK) isozyme patterns and Rsa , I restriction patterns of ND-1 were the most effective markers allowing discrimination among species. Intra-specific differentiation in mtDNA was found in all species but was much less pronounced than inter-species variation. In several specimens composite haplotypes typical of another species were found that reflect probable gene introgression by hybridization. A combination of mtDNA and nuclear genetic markers is suggested for reliable identification of both typical species representatives and hybrids.  相似文献

Water temperatures from 15.0 to 20.0° C are recommended as the most suitable for sustained production of larval vendace, as indicated by the developmental rates, the instantaneous rates of growth, mortality, and the net biomass gain of larvae reared at eight constant temperatures from 4.8 to 22.1° C. The recommended temperatures are optimal when the available food and photoperiod are not the limiting factors. Temperatures higher than 22.0° C will cause increased mortality, whereas temperatures lower than 15.0° C, although advisable when food is limited, will retard larval growth and development.  相似文献

To understand mechanisms structuring diversity in young adaptive radiations, quantitative and unbiased information about genetic and phenotypic diversity is much needed. Here, we present the first in‐depth investigation of whitefish diversity in a Swiss lake, with continuous spawning habitat sampling in both time and space. Our results show a clear cline like pattern in genetics and morphology of populations sampled along an ecological depth gradient in Lake Neuchâtel. Divergent natural selection appears to be involved in shaping this cline given that trait specific PST‐values are significantly higher than FST‐values when comparing populations caught at different depths. These differences also tend to increase with increasing differences in depth, indicating adaptive divergence along a depth gradient, which persists despite considerable gene flow between adjacent demes. It however remains unclear, whether the observed pattern is a result of currently stable selection‐gene flow balance, incipient speciation, or reverse speciation due to anthropogenic habitat alteration causing two formerly divergent species to collapse into a single gene pool.  相似文献

Parallel adaptive radiation events provide a powerful framework for investigations of ecology's contribution to phenotypic diversification. Ecologically driven divergence has been invoked to explain the repeated evolution of sympatric dwarf and normal lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) species in multiple lakes in eastern North America. Nevertheless, links between most putatively adaptive traits and ecological variation remain poorly defined within and among whitefish species pairs. Here, we examine four species pairs for variation in gill, heart, and brain size; three traits predicted to show strong phenotypic responses to ecological divergence. In each of the species pairs, normals exhibited larger body size standardized gills compared to dwarfs – a pattern that is suggestive of a common ecological driver of gill size divergence. Within lakes, the seasonal hypoxia experienced in the benthic environment is a likely factor leading to the requirement for larger gills in normals. Interestingly, the morphological pathways used to achieve larger gills varied between species pairs from Québec and Maine, which may imply subtle non‐parallelism in gill size divergence related to differences in genetic background. There was also a non‐significant trend toward larger hearts in dwarfs, the more active species of the two, whereas brain size varied exclusively among the lake populations. Taken together, our results suggest that the diversification of whitefish has been driven by parallel and non‐parallel ecological conditions across lakes. Furthermore, the phenotypic response to ecological variation may depend on genetic background of each population.  相似文献
