Distribution, morphology, and orientation of superficial neuromasts and polarization of the hair cells within superficial neuromasts of the goldfish (Carassius auratus) were examined using fluorescence labeling and scanning electron microscopy. On each body side, goldfish have 1,800-2,000 superficial neuromasts distributed across the head, trunk and tail fin. Each superficial neuromast had about 14-32 hair cells that were arranged in the sensory epithelium with the axis of best sensitivity aligned perpendicular to the long axis of the neuromast. Hair cell polarization was rostro-caudal in most superficial neuromasts on trunk scales (with the exception of those on the lateral line scales), or on the tail fin. On lateral line scales, the most frequent hair cell polarization was dorso-ventral in 45% and rostro-caudal in 20% of the superficial neuromasts. On individual trunk scales, superficial neuromasts were organized in rows which in most scales showed similar orientations with angle deviations smaller than 45 degrees . In about 16% of all trunk scales, groups of superficial neuromasts in the dorsal and ventral half of the scale were oriented orthogonal to each other. On the head, most superficial neuromasts were arranged in rows or groups of similar orientation with angle deviations smaller than 45 degrees . Neighboring groups of superficial neuromasts could differ with respect to their orientation. The most frequent hair cell polarization was dorso-ventral in front of the eyes and on the ventral mandible and rostro-caudal below the eye and on the operculum.  相似文献

The species–area relationship (SAR) has been extensively studied in a wide range of plant communities, but very few studies have directly addressed how plant communities affect the SAR and what are the underlying mechanisms. Many graminoids form distinct tussocks where many other plant species grow, but no study has investigated whether the SAR holds true for the vegetation on tussocks. In four plant communities on an abandoned subalpine pasture in the Swiss National Park, we made releves on 600 tussocks of Carex sempervirens and measured tussock basal area and other tussock traits. In all four communities, species richness on C. sempervirens tussocks was strongly positively related to tussock basal area (R20.74), while other tussock traits explained very little (R2<0.04). Slope and intercept of the SAR on C. sempervirens tussocks differed significantly among the four communities. This was because plant communities affected richness in smaller tussocks (basal diameter <10 cm) but not that in large tussocks (basal diameter10 cm). We conclude that the SAR holds true for vegetation on C. sempervirens tussocks and changes with plant communities. Changes in the SAR on C. sempervirens tussocks are very likely because smaller tussocks are less independent of the plant communities than the larger ones, regarding disturbance or nutrients.  相似文献

Marine vertebrate strandings data can provide insights into the long-term dynamics of cetacean populations, and the threats they face. We investigate whether the spatio-temporal patterns of cetacean strandings around Cornwall, SW Britain, have changed in the past century. Analysis of strandings from 1911 to 2006 (n = 2,257) show that, since the mid-1970s, the relative frequency of strandings of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) and pilot whales (Globicephala melas) has increased significantly. Seasonal peaks in strandings frequencies are apparent, between December and March for harbour porpoises and common dolphins, and between November and January for pilot whales. There were significant positive trends in the number of common dolphin and harbour porpoise strandings, as a proportion of total strandings, over time. Strandings of common dolphins, porpoises and all other species occur more frequently on the south coast of Cornwall. A total of 415 cetaceans were subject to full veterinary necropsy to determine cause of death, between 1990 and 2006, and 253 (61%) of these individuals were determined to have died due to bycatch in fishing gear. Analyses of industrialised fishing pressure in UK waters show the seas around Cornwall to be one of the most heavily fished areas of the UK. We suggest a number of factors that could be responsible for the recent increases in cetacean strandings in southwest UK waters in recent years, including survey effort, as well as abundance and range shifts that are potentially linked with climate change. Although detectable levels of bycatch rate have not increased over time, fisheries interactions are in significant part responsible for mortality patterns and are worthy of more detailed investigation. Many marine protected areas (MPAs), particularly in developing countries, have failed because of a lack of enforcement and monitoring due to limited public funds for conservation. Private investment and management in MPAs offers a potential solution, and has been applied with initial positive results at the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area (SIMCA) in Sabah, Malaysia. Conservation fees charged to visitors to Lankayan Island Dive Resort within the SIMCA have generated a sustainable source of financing to meet the majority of management costs for the conservation area, which is separately managed by a private organization called Reef Guardian. The availability of adequate funds has enabled Reef Guardian to invest in personnel training and surveillance technology to enforce the rules and regulations of the conservation area. In collaboration with government enforcement agencies, Reef Guardian has reduced threats such as illegal fishing and turtle egg poaching. As a result, there is a comparatively high abundance of commercially important fish, and turtle nestings at Lankayan Island have increased. Private management can be effective in conserving biodiversity in MPAs, and may well succeed regionally in suitable locations.

Four microbial communities capable of degrading acetochlor, designated A, D, E, and J, were obtained from acetochlor-contaminated soil and sludge. Acetochlor at an initial concentration of 55mg/L was completely degraded by the four mixed cultures after 4 days. At 80 mg/L acetochlor, more than 99% degradation was observed with D, 84% with A and E, and 88% with J after 9 days. There are primary eight strains of bacteria in community A, three in community D, E, and J, respectively. No single isolate was able to degrade acetochlor efficiently. The acetochlor biodegradation products were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The probable degradative pathways of acetochlor involved dechlorination, hydroxylation, deethoxymethylation, cyclization, carboxylation, and decarboxylation. Propachlor, alachlor, and metolachlor, which are also the main components of the chloroacetanilide herbicide, could be degraded by the four mixed cultures to some degree. Given the high degradation rates observed here, the four mixed cultures obtained may be useful in the degradation processes of acetochlor.  相似文献

We manipulated the number of saprotrophic fungi in either a complex multi-resource substratum (sterilized forest soil), or a single-resource substratum (powdered cellulose). The substrates were inoculated with five common species of soil fungi in all possible combinations (from monocultures to five species in combination). In both substrates, the rate of organic matter decomposition was positively associated with species richness. The effect of fungal diversity was much stronger in the uniform single-resource substrate ( r 2 = 0.455, P  < 0.0001) than in soil ( r 2 = 0.154, P  < 0.0001). The results document that species richness of microbial decomposers strongly affects decomposition processes, at least at the species poor end of the diversity gradient. Both, 'sampling effect' and 'species complementarity effect' contributed to the community response with the latter being much more pronounced in uniform substrate than in soil. This indicates that facilitative interactions are more important than resource partitioning for positive effects of species richness.  相似文献

Although ecologists have speculated that sublethal predation can impact prey dynamics, consequences of these predator effects have seldom been experimentally tested. In soft‐sediment marine communities, fishes crop extended feeding siphons of buried clams, potentially causing clams to reduce their burial depth, thereby enhancing their susceptibility to excavating lethal predators. We simulated cropping of the confamilial clams, Protothaca staminea and Venerupis philippinarum, by removing the top 40% of siphons, which caused each species to burrow 33–50% shallower than conspecifics with intact siphons. To examine subsequent consequences of reduced burial depth, we exposed cropped and intact clams to natural levels of predation in the field. Because of a naturally longer siphon, Protothaca, even after cropping, remained at relatively safe burial depths. In contrast, siphon cropping nearly doubled the mortality rate of Venerupis. Thus, while sublethal predation facilitates lethal predation, this linkage depends on specific life history characteristics, even among ecologically similar species.  相似文献

Aim The conservation of biological and genetic diversity is a major goal of reserve systems at local, regional, and national levels. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources suggests a 12% threshold (area basis) for adequate protection of biological and genetic diversity of a plant community. However, thresholds based on area may protect only a small portion of the total diversity if the locations are chosen without regard to the variation within the community. The objectives of this study were to demonstrate methods to apply a coarse‐filter approach for identifying gaps in the current reserve system of the Psuedotsuga menziesii (Douglas‐fir) forest type group based on current climatic conditions and a global climate change scenario. Location Western United States. Method We used an ecological envelope approach that was based on seven bioclimatic factors, two topographic factors, and two edaphic factors. Multivariate factor analysis was then used to reduce the envelope to two dimensions. The relative density of habitat and protected areas were identified in each part of the envelope based on the current climate and potential future climate. We used this information to identify gaps in the reserve system. Results Although the protected areas occurred in all parts of the envelope, most existed in colder and drier areas. This was true for both the current climate and potential future climate. Main conclusion To protect more of the ecological envelope, future conservation efforts would be most effective in western Oregon, north‐western Washington, and north‐western California.  相似文献

Abstract Results are presented on vascular species richness in three representative alpine plant communities at 1040–1410 m on Mt Burns in the perhumid Fiordland region, a hotspot of alpine plant diversity, in south‐western South Island, New Zealand. Overall species richness was not dissimilar between the three communities in any of the eight plot sizes (mean values of 20.8–24.4 species in the largest plots of 100 m2), even though coefficients of floristic similarity were small (17.9; 23.5) between both low‐alpine communities (snow tussock‐shrubland and snow tussock grassland) and the high‐alpine cushion fellfield. Vascular species richness was generally similar to that in the few other oceanic New Zealand alpine communities for which data are available. The decline in richness from the low‐alpine to high‐alpine zones, revealed in more comprehensive records from two other regions with generally similar oceanic environments, was not recorded, indeed was reversed, on Mt Burns. Whether the recognized biodiversity hotspot of Fiordland has a generally richer high‐alpine flora than other regions in New Zealand needs further examination. The general pattern of alpine floristic richness in relation to elevation, in New Zealand, also prevails in most alpine regions abroad, usually under much more extreme continental environments. This pattern is usually ascribed to the associated decrease in temperature. Both the small size of the land mass and/or associated environmental conditions may be implicated but clarification awaits further data, preferably collected with standardized procedures.  相似文献

Log floating in the 19th to mid 20th centuries has profoundly changed the environmental conditions in many northern river systems of the world. Regulation of flow by dams, straightening and narrowing of channels by various piers and wing dams, and homogenization of bed structure are some of the major impacts. As a result, the conditions for many riverine organisms have been altered. Removing physical constructions and returning boulders to the channels can potentially restore conditions for these organisms. Here we describe the history of log driving, review its impact on physical and biological conditions and processes, and predict the responses to restoration. Reviewing the literature on comparable restoration efforts and building upon this knowledge, using boreal Swedish rivers as an example, we address the last point. We hypothesize that restoration measures will make rivers wider and more sinuous, and provide rougher bottoms, thus improving land-water interactions and increasing the retention capacity of water, sediment, organic matter and nutrients. The geomorphic and hydraulic/hydrologic alterations are supposed to favor production, diversity, migration and reproduction of riparian and aquatic organisms. The response rates are likely to vary according to the types of processes and organisms. Some habitat components, such as beds of very large boulders and bedrock outcrops, and availability of sediment and large woody debris are believed to be extremely difficult to restore. Monitoring and evaluation at several scales are needed to test our predictions.  相似文献
