Drift dispersal of mayfly nymphs in the presence of chemical and visual cues from diurnal drift- and nocturnal benthic-foraging fishes 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
1. The drift of Baetis thermicus nymphs in the presence of chemical, visual and hydrodynamic cues, considered individually and in combination, produced by different predatory fishes was examined experimentally in laboratory streams. Masu salmon ( Oncorhynchus masou ) and freshwater sculpin ( Cottus nozawae ) are typical drift- and benthic-foraging fishes, respectively.
2. Observations of fish swimming in the streams revealed differing diel periodicity between the species; sculpin were nocturnal foragers and salmon diurnal.
3. The drift rate of Baetis by night increased in the presence of chemical cues from sculpin, with other cues having no interactive effects. In contrast, the drift rate increased primarily in the presence of both chemical and, particularly, visual cues from salmon, although no additional effects were found for any non-visual cues. Visual cues could enable Baetis to assess precisely the predation risk from foraging salmon by day, whereas Baetis could not use visual cues to detect sculpin either at night, because of the low light intensity, or during the day, because of the low activity of sculpin at that time.
4. In natural streams, which are often inhabited by several predatory fish employing different modes of foraging, invertebrates may be able to precisely assess the risk and effectively to avoid predators by using cues unique to each. 相似文献

Effects of different fish species and biomass on plankton interactions in a shallow lake 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Thirty-six enclosures, surface area 4 m2, were placed in Little Mere, a shallow fertile lake in Cheshire, U.K. The effects of different fish species (common carp, common bream, tench and roach) of zooplanktivorous size, and their biomass (0, 200 and 700 kg ha–1) on water chemistry, zooplankton and phytoplankton communities were investigated. Fish biomass had a strong effect on mean zooplankton size and abundance. When fish biomass rose, larger zooplankters were replaced by more numerous smaller zooplankters. Consequently phytoplankton abundance rose in the presence of higher densities of zooplanktivorous fish, as zooplankton grazing was reduced. Fish species were also significant in determining zooplankton community size structure. In enclosures with bream there were significantly greater densities of small zooplankters than in enclosures stocked with either carp, tench and, in part, roach. When carp or roach were present, the phytoplankton had a greater abundance of Cyanophyta than when bream or tench were present. Whilst top-down effects of fish predation controlled the size partitioning of the zooplankton community, this, in turn apparently controlled the bottom-up regeneration of nutrients for the phytoplankton community. At the zooplankton–phytoplankton interface, both top-down and bottom-up processes were entwined in a reciprocal feedback mechanism with the extent and direction of that relationship altered by changes in fish species. Structuring of the cyanobacterial community by pelagic fish in subtropical reservoirs: experimental evidence from Australia 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
1. Subtropical reservoirs of Australia are commonly subject to summer blooms of cyanobacteria. The potential for food web manipulation to control cyanobacterial blooms was investigated in Lake Maroon, south east Queensland using enclosures in which the density of the Australian gudgeon Hypseleotris spp. was manipulated. 2. Zooplankton biomass and community structure were strongly affected by fish density. A size dependent predation effect of Hypseleotris on zooplankton was observed at ambient fish densities, and the community shifted towards a dominance of copepod juveniles and nauplii. Substantial increases in the populations of Ceriodaphnia and calanoid copepods were observed at low fish densities and in the absence of fish. 3. At ambient fish densities total phytoplankton and the proportion of cyanobacteria were maintained at levels similar to those prevailing at day 0. Total phytoplankton and the proportion of cyanobacteria decreased substantially at low fish densities and in the absence of fish. Chlorophytes became dominant in the ‘no fish’ treatment and the grazing‐resistant species Oocystis and Dictyosphaerium were significantly higher than at ambient fish densities. 4. The experiment demonstrated a strong positive relationship between Hypseleotris density and cyanobacteria, and the results suggest that subtropical reservoirs may be suited to food web manipulation as a means of controlling summer cyanobacterial blooms. 相似文献

Summary During Givetian times, the Jebel Rheris area was situated in a transitional zone at the northern margin of Gondwana, between
the emerged Ougnate High in the north and the Mader Basin in the south. A facies pattern developed from stacked or amalgamated
coral-stromatoporoid biostromes in the northern near-shore area to an alternating biostrome–crinoidal grainstone succession,
which passed over a low angle slope setting towards the south to a pure crinoidal grainstone facies with abundant slumping
structures. Finally in the south, a basinal turbiditic facies evolved. In the shallow sea, biostromes probably developed due
to the lack of a ‘binder guild’ in the fossil community, which hampered the establishment of mound-like structures, stable
enough to resist high-energy storm events. Repeated termination of the coral-stromatoporoid growth is attributed to transgressions.
During suitable conditions, colonisation of the sea floor proceeded in three phases: a) cluster settlement; pioneer communities, mostly consisting of tabulate corals and domical to bulbous stromatoporoids, started growing in laterally
delimited clusters; b) lateral dispersion; from these centres, settlement prograded laterally, until large areas of the sea-floor were covered; c) vertical accretion; the organisms more and more grew on each other, causing a homogeneous vertical expansion. A significant difference of this

Aim Few studies have explicitly considered the recurrent pattern of declining species diversity and increasing geographical range size that exists for numerous taxa across a variety of physical gradients. We extend Stevens’ [ Stevens, G.C. (1996) Journal of Biogeography, 23 , 149] work on Rapoport's bathymetric rule, using a more complete latitudinal assemblage of Northeast Pacific fishes and new data from Northwest Atlantic gastropods, to show that bathymetrical range size and species diversity are not causally linked. Location Fishes from the Northeast Pacific (0°–60° N) and gastropods from the Northwest Atlantic (0°–74° N) distributed from the surface to depths greater than 200 m. Methods Species pools were divided into three bathymetrical subgroups: (1) species restricted to shallow waters, between the surface and 200 m, (2) species that occurred in waters, both shallow and deep of 200 m, and (3) species restricted to waters deeper than 200 m. Median bathymetrical range size and total number of species were plotted against latitude (2° bins) using Stevens’ method, for the entire species pool and individual bathymetrical groups. Results For both fishes and gastropods, the apparent link between extratropical diversity and bathymetrical range size is an artefact resulting from the disproportionately high number of shallow restricted species in tropical latitudes, and the loss of these species in temperate latitudes. Furthermore, the extratropical gradient in gastropod diversity and bathymetrical range size are decoupled by approximately 15°, and while the latitudinal pattern for diversity is consistent across bathymetrical groups, median bathymetrical range size is highly irregular. Main conclusions These results suggests that functional groups can contribute disproportionately to patterns apparent at larger scales and that analysis of ecographical patterns by subregion is a novel approach that can help resolve debates over causality when patterns are seemingly coincident. 相似文献

Diel vertical migration (DVM) behaviour is a predator avoidance mechanism observed within many zooplankton species in the presence of zooplanktivorous fish. A 24-h survey was carried out in June 1998 to investigate diel variation in the vertical distribution of fish, zooplankton and phytoplankton (chlorophyll) in Lake Kinneret, Israel. Fish revealed diel variation in vertical distribution but had no spatial overlap with zooplankton, and consequently no apparent influence on zooplankton dispersal. Zooplankton revealed some diel variation in distribution being affected by thermocline and oxycline position and movement of the internal the internal seiche wave. Cyclopoid species closely follow the movement of the seiche wave implying that, due to their greater motility, they are following conditions that are suitable to them. The Cladocera species and small rotifers only partly, which may be part of their phototaxic behaviour. Physical forces like convection, horizontal and vertical forcing probably have a role in contributing to a homogeneous distribution of the plankton by preventing stratification or interfering with the more motile zooplankton which may be attempting to migrate. 相似文献

Coral species in a similar habitat often show different bleaching susceptibilities. It is not understood which partner of coral-zooxanthellae complexes is responsible for differential stress susceptibility. Stress susceptibilities of in hospite and isolated zooxanthellae from five species of corals collected from shallow water in Okinawa were compared. To estimate stress susceptibility, we measured the maximum quantum yields (Fv/Fm) of in hospite and isolated zooxanthellae after 3-h exposure to either 28 or 34 °C at various light intensities and their recovery after 12 h under dim light at 26 °C. Significant reduction in photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) of photosystem II (PSII) was observed in in hospite zooxanthellae exposed to high light intensity (1000 μmol quanta m−2 s−1), while PSII activity of isolated zooxanthellae decreased significantly even at a lower light intensity (70 μmol quanta m−2 s−1). The recovery of the PSII activity after 12 h was incomplete in both in hospite and isolated zooxanthellae, indicating the presence of chronic photoinhibition. The stress susceptibility of isolated zooxanthellae was more variable among species than in hospite zooxanthellae. The order of stress susceptibility among the five coral species was different between in hospite and isolated zooxanthellae. The present results suggest that the host plays a significant role in determining bleaching susceptibility of corals, though zooxanthellae from different host have different stress susceptibilities. 相似文献

Expression of myofibrillar proteins and parvalbumin isoforms in white muscle of dorada during development 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Several polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis techniques were used to study developmental changes in myofibrillar protein composition and parvalbumin distribution in the myotomal muscle of Brycon moorei . Two myosin LC2 chains and two troponin I isoforms were successively detected. Up to four troponin T isoforms were synthesized. Slow red-muscle myofibrils from adult fish showed no common component (except actin) with larval, juvenile or adult fast white-muscle myofibrils. During growth of B. moorei , two classes of parvalbumin isoforms were sequentially expressed: larval PA I, PA IIa, and PA IIb and adult PA III. In adult fish, the content in Tn T-2 isoform decreased from the anterior to the posterior myomeres, in favour of Tn T-1 and Tn T-4. The parvalbumin content also diminished from the rostral to the caudal muscle. The fast rate of transition from larval to adult isoforms appeared to parallel the extremely fast growth of B. moorei . Sequential expression of these isoforms presumably reflected variations in the contractile properties of the muscle fibres, required by changes in physiological demands of the propulsive musculature. 相似文献
