Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) pipes are considered to be immune for boring organisms. However, inspection of the offshore cooling water conduits of Lumut combined cycle power plant, Malaysia show that ABS pipes may not necessarily be immune for wood boring pholads, Martesia striata. M. striata caused heavy damage by drilling holes in ABS pipes used (about 5 years) for transportation of hypochlorite from the station towards the intake domes. Hole sizes ranged from 3 to 19 mm2 with an average of 11 mm2. Unlike other boring animals (e.g. Lithophaga), M. striata penetration is not assisted by chemical dissolution of the substrates and therefore, attack is not limited to calcium carbonate substrates. In this context, material like low dense concrete and rocks, wood, PVC, ABS, etc. is subject to attack of M. striata. The effect of four cooling strategies on cooling performance of a hybrid personal cooling system (HPCS) incorporated with phase change materials (PCMs) and electric fans in a hot environment (i.e., Tair = 36 ± 0.5 °C, RH = 59 ± 5%) was investigated. Twelve healthy young male participants underwent four 90-min trials comprising 70 min walking and 20 min resting periods. Cooling strategies adopted in this work were CON (control), PCM-control (PCMs were removed at the end of exercise), Fan-control (fans were switched OFF during the initial 20 min) and PCM&Fan-control (fans were turned ON after 20 min exercising and PCMs were removed after the 70-min exercise). Results demonstrated that the control of electric fans could suppress the mean skin temperature rise to 34.0 °C by over 15 min and also cut down the energy consumption of the HPCS from 15.6 W h to 12.1 W h over the entire 90-min trials. Thus, it is recommended that fans should be turned off at the beginning of hot exposure and switched on once participants felt warm. Our findings also showed that the removal of fully melted PCM packs from the HPCS could enhance the evaporative cooling effect brought about by air circulation. The removal of melted PCMs significantly reduced the physical load by 37.3% and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were decreased by 3.5–4.2 RPE units. This could also help quickly restore the PCM energy for future usage. In summary, cooling strategies demonstrated in this work could improve HPCS's overall cooling performance on workers while working in the studied hot environment. 相似文献

Hypothermia is a known approach in the treatment of neurological pathologies. Mild hypothermia enhances the therapeutic window for application of medicines, while deep hypothermia is often accompanied by complications, including problems in the recovery of brain functions. The purpose of present study was to investigate the functioning of glutamate ionotropic receptors in brain slices cooled with different rates during mild, moderate and deep hypothermia. Using a system of gradual cooling combined with electrophysiological recordings in slices, we have shown that synaptic activity mediated by the alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors in rat olfactory cortex was strongly dependent on the rate of lowering the temperature. High cooling rate caused a progressive decrease in glutamate receptor activity in brain slices during gradual cooling from mild to deep hypothermia. On the contrary, low cooling rate slightly changed the synaptic responses in deep hypothermia. The short-term potentiation may be induced in slices by electric tetanization at 16 °C in this case. Hence, low cooling rate promoted preservation of neuronal activity and plasticity in the brain tissue. 相似文献

Vitrification of mouse oocytes: improved rates of survival, fertilization, and development to blastocysts 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Rall and Fahy's (1985) vitrification procedure for the cryopreservation of 8-cell embryos was applied to unfertilized mouse oocytes. Unchanged, this method resulted in a mean of 24.1% of vitrified oocytes fertilizing and developing to blastocysts in vitro. Exposure of oocytes to the cryoprotectant media, but without the vitrification, resulted in 30.8% developing to blastocysts. Modifications to the durations of and media used in the dilution and equilibration steps of the procedure produced a final protocol giving a mean of 55.4% of vitrified oocytes and 72.4% of nonvitrified VS1-exposed oocytes developing to blastocysts; 85.7% of control oocytes develop to blastocysts. Osmotically induced damage was found to be the most important cause of loss of viability in these methods. Cooling of oocytes to 5-8 degrees C during the procedure had no significant effect on their viability. No parthenogenetic activation of oocytes occurred as a result of exposure to the procedure. 相似文献
