Tree species of Eurasian broadleaved forest possess two divergent trait syndromes with contrasting patterns of resource allocation adapted to different selection environments: short-stature basal resprouters that divert resources to a bud bank adapted to frequent and severe disturbances such as fire and herbivory, and tall trees that delay reproduction by investing in rapid height growth to escape shading. Drawing on theory developed in savanna ecosystems, we propose a conceptual framework showing that the possession of contrasting trait syndromes is essential for the persistence of broadleaved trees in an open ecosystem that burns. Consistent with this hypothesis, trees of modern Eurasian broadleaved forest bear a suite of traits that are adaptive to surface and crown-fire regimes. We contend that limited opportunities in grassland restricts recruitment to disturbance-free refugia, and en masse establishment creates a wooded environment where shade limits the growth of light-demanding savanna plants. Rapid height growth, which involves investment in structural support and the switch from a multi-stemmed to a monopodial growth form, is adaptive in this shaded environment. Although clustering reduces surface fuel loads, these establishment nuclei are vulnerable to high-intensity crown fires. The lethal effects of canopy fire are avoided by seasonal leaf shedding, and aerial resprouting enhances rapid post-fire recovery of photosynthetic capacity. While these woody formations satisfy the structural definition of forest, their constituents are clearly derived from savanna. Contrasting trait syndromes thus represent the shift from consumer to resource regulation in savanna ecosystems. Consistent with global trends, the diversification of most contemporary broadleaved taxa coincided with the spread of grasslands, a surge in fire activity and a decline in wooded ecosystems in the late Miocene–Pliocene. Recognition that Eurasian broadleaved forest has savanna origins and persists as an alternative state with adjacent grassy ecosystems has far-reaching management implications in accordance with functional rather than structural criteria. Shade is a severe constraint to the regeneration and growth of both woody and herbaceous growth forms in consumer-regulated ecosystems. However, these ecosystems are highly resilient to disturbance, an essential process that maintains diversity especially among the species-rich herbaceous component that is vulnerable to shading when consumer behaviour is altered.  相似文献

The obesity epidemic represents an important public health issue in the United States. Studying obesity trends across age groups over time helps to identify crucial relationships between the disease and medical treatment allowing for the development of effective prevention policies. We aim to define subgroups of age and cohort effects in obesity prevalence over time by considering an optimization approach applied to the age‐period‐cohort (APC) model. We consider a heterogeneous regression problem where the regression coefficients are age dependent and belong to subgroups with unknown grouping information. Using the APC model, we apply the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm to develop a two‐step algorithm for (1) subgrouping of cohort effects based on similar characteristics and (2) subgrouping age effects over time. The proposed clustering approach is illustrated for the United States population, aged 18–79, during the period 1990–2017.  相似文献

Understanding the mechanisms of species distribution within ecosystems is a fundamental question of ecological research. The current worldwide changes and loss of habitats associated with a decline in species richness render this topic a key element for developing mitigation strategies. Ecological niche theory is a widely accepted concept to describe species distribution along environmental gradients where each taxon occupies its own distinct set of environmental parameters, that is, its niche. Niche occupation has been described in empirical studies for different closely related taxa, like ant, ungulate, or skink species, just to name a few. However, how species assemblages of whole ecosystems across multiple taxa are structured and organized has not been investigated thoroughly, although considering all taxa of a community would be essential when analyzing realized niches. Here, we investigated the organization of niche occupation and species distribution for the whole ground‐associated invertebrate community of small tropical insular ecosystems. By correlating environmental conditions with species occurrences using partial canonical correspondence analysis (pCCA), we demonstrated that the ground‐associated invertebrate community does not spread evenly across the overall niche space, but instead is compartmentalized in four distinct clusters: crustacean and gastropod taxa occurred in one cluster, attributable to the beach habitat, whereas hexapods and spider taxa occurred in three distinct inland clusters, attributable to distinct inland habitats, that is, grassland, open forest, and dense forest. Within the clusters, co‐occurrence pattern analysis suggested only a few negative interactions between the different taxa. By studying ground‐associated insular invertebrate communities, we have shown that species distribution and niche occupation can be, similar to food webs, organized in a compartmentalized way. The compartmentalization of the niche space might thereby be a mechanism to increase ecosystem resilience, as disturbances cascade more slowly throughout the ecosystem.  相似文献

目的 了解湖北省农村地区住院服务利用的家庭聚集性大小及其分布。方法 以湖北省麻城市2014年新农合住院数据库为基础,利用Excel 2010中的“IF”“LOOKUP”等函数获取样本县区所有农村家庭的住院利用情况;利用面积图和散点图绘出洛伦兹曲线并计算出基尼系数;采用IBM SPSS Statistic 22.0对数据进行描述性统计和方差分析等。结果 3%的家庭利用了19%的住院服务,农村家庭住院服务利用的基尼系数为0.366;高住院服务利用家庭门诊服务利用量(29.2±26.9)低于中等住院服务利用家庭(31.7±23.5);除低住院服务利用个体外,高住院服务利用家庭中住院服务利用成员的住院量都大于其他家庭(N高高9.2>N中高4, N高中2.4>N中中2.2>N低中1.7);高住院服务利用家庭到县医院的驾车时间最短(t44.3<t44.9<t45.2),家庭住院人数最多(N>4.5>N4.4>N3.9)。结论 农村地区住院服务利用存在较大的家庭聚集性,存在一定不合理;门诊服务利用的提高可能会降低住院服务的利用。  相似文献

Recent Hi-C technology enables more comprehensive chromosomal conformation research, including the detection of structural variations, especially translocations. In this paper, we formulate the interchromosomal translocation detection as a problem of scan clustering in a spatial point process. We then develop TranScan, a new translocation detection method through scan statistics with the control of false discovery. The simulation shows that TranScan is more powerful than an existing sophisticated scan clustering method, especially under strong signal situations. Evaluation of TranScan against current translocation detection methods on realistic breakpoint simulations generated from real data suggests better discriminative power under the receiver-operating characteristic curve. Power analysis also highlights TranScan's consistent outperformance when sequencing depth and heterozygosity rate is varied. Comparatively, Type I error rate is lowest when evaluated using a karyotypically normal cell line. Both the simulation and real data analysis indicate that TranScan has great potentials in interchromosomal translocation detection using Hi-C data.  相似文献
