Macroscopic chiral objects (boats and planes with turned rudders, shoes, etc.) get separated from their mirror‐image counterparts by motion in achiral media. However, chiral molecules are not enantio‐differentiated without the presence of a chiral environment, which may be due to other chiral molecules in the medium. This article explores the reasons of this micro/macro difference as well as the size borderline between the two regimes. There are two major demarcation lines, both related to the object's chaotic thermal motion. The first one is due to destruction of the necessary spatial orientation by the fast rotational diffusion. Only particles larger than 1 μm can maintain their original orientation for 1 sec or longer. For smaller particles, an additional external orienting factor, e.g., a strong electric field has to be applied. The second limitation is defined by the ratio of the hydrodynamic separation of the enantiomers (which is directly proportional to time) to their displacement due to the translational Brownian motion (which is proportional to square root of time). On the laboratory time scales (up to a year), the chiral objects have to be larger than 0.25 μm to be resolved. On evolutionary time scales, much smaller object could be resolved. We review recent results about the functioning of aquatic carnivorous traps from the genus Utricularia. The use of high speed cameras has helped to elucidate the mechanism at the origin of the ultra fast capture process of Utricularia, at a millisecond time scale. As water is pumped out of the trap, pressure decreases inside the trap and elastic energy is stored due to the change of shape of the trap body. This energy is suddenly released when the trap is fired: the trap door undergoes an elastical instability: buckling, which allows its fast and passive opening and closure. This mechanism is used by Utricularia both to catch preys touching its trigger hairs and to fire spontaneously at regular time intervals. The results leading to this interpretation are reviewed and discussed and suggestions for further work are briefly presented. 相似文献

人类活动导致的景观改变能形成大量的生境缀块和边缘结构,对植物扩散产生重要影响。以植物个体运动生态学——种子扩散模式作为分类依据,对兴凯湖自然保护区游憩带与非游憩带、交通廊道与非交通廊道中动物扩散物种、风扩散物种、无助力扩散物种(包括重力扩散、弹射扩散等短距离扩散的物种)以及全部物种的边缘溢出效应分别进行对比分析。结果显示,游憩带动物扩散物种和全部物种的边缘溢出效应均明显弱于非游憩带;而风扩散物种在游憩带和非游憩带均有大量溢出;无助力扩散物种在这两个实验区的溢出效应均不明显。交通廊道中动物扩散物种的溢出效应显著弱于非交通廊道,但风扩散物种却明显强于非交通廊道;无助力扩散物种在两种廊道类型中同样只有少量溢出,且距离相对较短;总体溢出效应并未发现显著差异。这些结果表明,旅游开发对植物运动生态学产生了影响,最终导致了溢出效应的改变。 相似文献

Clinical gait analysis has proven to reduce uncertainties in selecting the appropriate quantity and type of treatment for patients with neuromuscular disorders. However, gait analysis as a clinical tool is under-utilised due to the limitations and cost of acquiring and managing data. To overcome these obstacles, inertial motion capture (IMC) recently emerged to counter the limitations attributed to other methods. This paper investigates the use of IMC for training and testing a back-propagation artificial neural network (ANN) for the purpose of distinguishing between hemiparetic stroke and able-bodied ambulation. Routine gait analysis was performed on 30 able-bodied control subjects and 28 hemiparetic stroke patients using an IMC system. An ANN was optimised to classify the two groups, achieving a repeatable network accuracy of 99.4%. It is concluded that an IMC system and appropriate computer methods may be useful for the planning and monitoring of gait rehabilitation therapy of stroke victims. 相似文献

In this study, we have analysed heel strike (HS) and toe off (TO) of normal individuals and hemiplegic patients, taking advantage of output curves acquired from various sensors, and verified the validity of sensor detection methods and their effectiveness when they were used for hemiplegic gaits. Gait phase detections using three different motion sensors were valid, since they all had reliabilities more than 95%, when compared with foot velocity algorithm. Results showed that the tilt sensor and the gyrosensor could detect gait phase more accurately in normal individuals. Vertical acceleration could detect HS most accurately in hemiplegic patient group A. The gyrosensor could detect HS and TO most accurately in hemiplegic patient groups A and B. The detection of TO from all sensor signals was valid in both the patient groups A and B. However, the vertical acceleration detected HS validly in patient group A and the gyrosensor detected HS validly in patient group B. 相似文献

Despite the long‐standing interest in nonstationarity of both phenotypic evolution and diversification rates, only recently have methods been developed to study this property. Here, we propose a methodological expansion of the phylogenetic signal‐representation (PSR) curve based on phylogenetic eigenvectors to test for nonstationarity. The PSR curve is built by plotting the coefficients of determination R2 from phylogenetic eigenvector regression (PVR) models increasing the number of phylogenetic eigenvectors against the accumulated eigenvalues. The PSR curve is linear under a stationary model of trait evolution (i.e. the Brownian motion model). Here we describe the distribution of shifts in the models R2 and used a randomization procedure to compare observed and simulated shifts along the PSR curve, which allowed detecting nonstationarity in trait evolution. As an applied example, we show that the main evolutionary pattern of variation in the theropod dinosaur skull was nonstationary, with a significant shift in evolutionary rates in derived oviraptorosaurs, an aberrant group of mostly toothless, crested, birdlike theropods. This result is also supported by a recently proposed Bayesian‐based method (AUTEUR). A significant deviation between Ceratosaurus and Limusaurus terminal branches was also detected. We purport that our new approach is a valuable tool for evolutionary biologists, owing to its simplicity, flexibility and comprehensiveness. 相似文献

The fatty acid composition and some physical properties of intact cells and isolated plasma membranes of two types of mouse myeloid leukemia cell clone grown in culture have been examined. One clone type, MGI+D+, can be induced by the macrophage and granulocyte-inducing protein (MGI) to differentiate into mature macrophages and granulocytes. The other clone type, MGI+D?, could not be induced to differentiate into mature cells. A two-fold increase in the ratio of saturated fatty acid to unsaturated fatty acid was found in the MGI+D? compared to the MGI+D+ clones. The MGI+D? clones produced an unusual polyunsaturated C20:5 fatty acid at 28°C, whereas the MGI+D+ clones did not grow at this temperature. The cells and their isolated plasma membranes were studied by electron spin resonance. The motion of the 5-nitroxide stearate spin label was found to be higher in the intact cells and in the membranes of MGI+D? clones than of the MGI+D+ clones. The cells of MGI+D+ clones showed a similar freedom of motion to normal myeloblasts from the bone marrow. The results indicate that myeloid leukemia cells which differ in their competence to be induced to differentiate into mature cells have different physical properties of their plasma membranes and that this is correlated with their fatty acid acyl chain composition. 相似文献

Mathematical modelling of the directed movement of animals, microorganisms and cells is of great relevance in the fields of
biology and medicine. Simple diffusive models of movement assume a random walk in the position, while more realistic models
include the direction of movement by assuming a random walk in the velocity. These velocity jump processes, although more
realistic, are much harder to analyse and an equation that describes the underlying spatial distribution only exists in one
dimension. In this communication we set up a realistic reorientation model in two dimensions, where the mean turning angle
is dependent on the previous direction of movement and bias is implicitly introduced in the probability distribution for the
direction of movement. This model, and the associated reorientation parameters, is based on data from experiments on swimming
microorganisms. Assuming a transport equation to describe the motion of a population of random walkers using a velocity jump
process, together with this realistic reorientation model, we use a moment closure method to derive and solve a system of
equations for the spatial statistics. These asymptotic equations are a very good match to simulated random walks for realistic

We solved the differential equation describing combined action of DC and AC magnetic fields on thermal motion of ions in a biological macromolecule. The solution showed the occurrence of a new set of resonant peaks for ion oscillations under the influence of magnetic fields. After establishment of steady ion oscillations in the macromolecule interior that is well shielded from the action of small particles of the medium surrounding this molecule, the change in energy of ion thermal motion could be sufficient to alter the conformation state of the macromolecule. On this basis, a diversity of biological phenomena can be explained, including the appearance of the known "frequency" and "amplitude" windows, without any resort to the ideas of participation of cyclotron or parametric resonances in these effects. 相似文献
