The statistical modelling of count data permeates the discipline of ecology. Such data often exhibit overdispersion compared with a standard Poisson distribution, so that the variance of the counts is greater than that of the mean. Whereas modelling to reveal the effects of explanatory variables on the mean is commonplace, overdispersion is generally regarded as a nuisance parameter to be accounted for and subsequently ignored. Instead, we propose a method that models the overdispersion as a biologically interesting property of a data set and show how novel inference is provided as a result. We adapted the double hierarchical generalized linear model approach to create an easily extendible model structure that quantifies the influence of explanatory variables on the overdispersion of count data, and apply it to farmland birds. These data were from a study within Irish agricultural ecosystems, in which total bird species abundance and the abundance of farmland indicator species were compared on dairy and non‐dairy farms in the winter and breeding seasons. In general, overdispersion in bird counts was greater on dairy farms than on non‐dairy farms, and for total bird numbers, overdispersion was greatest on dairy farms in winter. Our code is fitted using the Bayesian package Rstan, and we make all code and data available in a GitHub repository. Within a Bayesian framework, this approach facilitates a meaningful quantification of the effects of categorical explanatory variables on any response variable with a tendency to overdispersion that has a meaningful biological or ecological explanation.  相似文献

We examined dietary self‐selection and rules of compromise for protein (P) and digestible carbohydrate (C) intake by fifth‐instar Vanessa cardui L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Nymphalini). We presented six fat‐free diet pairs to larvae in a choice trial to determine the ‘intake target’. In addition, we fed larvae seven fat‐free single diets differing in dietary nutrient ratio in no‐choice trials to determine the rules of compromise they exhibit when constrained to a singular, sub‐optimal dietary source. In choice trials, caterpillars regulated nutrient intake to a ratio of 1 protein to 1.09 carbohydrate (1P:1.09C), exhibiting tighter regulation of protein than of carbohydrate. Furthermore, larvae from different diet pair treatments did not differ in pupal mass or stadium duration. In no‐choice experiments, larvae reduced consumption on increasingly protein‐biased diets and increased consumption on increasingly carbohydrate‐biased diets, relative to a 1P:1C ratio diet. Differences in carbohydrate consumption were much greater between no‐choice treatments than differences in protein consumption. Dietary nutrient ratio affected pupal mass when accounting for initial larval mass. Pupal mass decreased as nutrient ratio was shifted off of 1P:1C, but to a greater extent when the ratio was skewed toward carbohydrate. Stadium duration increased as nutrient ratio diverged from 1P:1C, being more pronounced when shifted toward carbohydrate than toward protein. Regulation to near 1P:1C is consistent with results found for other Lepidoptera, and the rule of compromise exhibited by V. cardui is consistent with that expected for a generalist herbivore.  相似文献

Rainstorms are natural hazards, and they create hurdles in many parts of the world. They often cause damages to the life, properties, and human activities. The Qinling Mountains of China are among the few areas that are extremely hit by the rainstorms, but their hazard risks have not fully been assessed. This article takes an attempt to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive spatiotemporal risk assessment for the area. By using the geographic information system-enhanced Analytical Hierarchy Process assessment framework and the comprehensive index model, the rainstorm hazard risks can be evaluated from four different aspects. At last, the comprehensive rainstorm hazard risks have been assessed and zoned. Results indicate that with regional climate change, the frequencies of rainstorm have slightly increased over the past period of 46 years, and rainstorm hazard risks become higher on the whole. As a strong seasonal variation in the rainstorm days, the highest rainstorm hazard risks occur in July annually. The comprehensive rainstorm hazard risks in the southern regions of the Qinling Mountains are obviously higher than those in the northern regions. The Hanzhong and Ankang basins along the Hanjiang River are under the highest risk of rainstorms. The big cities of Xi'an and Baoji, piedmont plain and regions with good transportation, are under the lowest risk. The spatial distribution of rainstorm hazard risk shows that it has certain regulations along the rivers, ridges, and valleys, but it may be affected by the factors of rainfall and human activities. This article is significant for strategic environmental planning and hazard emergency management of the study area as well as in similar climatic regions of the world.  相似文献

Industrial symbiosis (IS) is the process by which by‐products are revalorized and exchanged among distinct business entities. The literature suggests that IS can bring financial, social, and environmental benefits to firms and society. Analytical tools have been developed for uncovering IS arrangements and guidelines suggested for designing IS arrangements where they do not yet exist. Despite these suggested benefits and in spite of these tools, few planned IS arrangements have successfully materialized, with notable exceptions in East Asia. Understanding why IS networks emerge and expand or falter requires both macro‐ and micro‐level analysis. Some explanatory factors have been extensively covered in the IS literature, such as the important role of coordinating organizations. But the analysis of enterprise‐level actions and strategies as well as the conditions in the external environment that act on the enterprises and the network are not as well examined. The article outlines an analytical framework that draws upon insights from research on cleaner production, corporate social responsibility, diffusion of innovation, and the role of the state in development. The framework is consistent with the view that the evolution of IS networks is characterized by “equifinality.” Different networks may achieve IS as a result of quite different combinations of factors. No general theory of IS success or decline is offered because no such theory can be expected. IS emergence, development, and disruption is approached as a problem of sociohistorical analysis. For such phenomena, analytical frameworks provide a common explanatory starting point, but no predictive power.  相似文献

Water transparency is one of the ecological indicators for describing water quality and the underwater light field which determines its productivity. In the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) as well as in the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) water transparency is used for ecological status classification of inland, coastal and open sea waters and it is regarded as an indicator for eutrophication in Baltic Sea management (HELCOM, 2007). We developed and compared different empirical and semi-analytical algorithms for lakes and coastal Nordic waters to retrieve Secchi depth (ZSD) from remote sensing data (MERIS, 300 m resolution). The algorithms were developed in water bodies with high coloured dissolved organic matter absorption (aCDOM(442) ranging 1.7–4.0 m−1), Chl a concentration (0.5–73 mg m−3) and total suspended matter (0.7–37.5 g m−3) and validated against an independent data set over inland and coastal waters (0.6 m < ZSD < 14.8 m). The results indicate that for empirical algorithms, using longer wavelengths in the visible spectrum as a reference band decreases the RMSE and increases the coefficient of determination (R2). The accuracy increased (R2 = 0.75, RMSE = 1.33 m, n = 134) when ZSD was retrieved via an empirical relationship between ZSD and Kd(490). The best agreement with in situ data was attained when ZSD was calculated via both the diffuse and the beam attenuation coefficient (R2 = 0.89, RMSE = 0.77 m, n = 89). The results demonstrate that transparency can be retrieved with high accuracy over various optical water types by the means of ocean color remote sensing, improving both the spatial and temporal coverage. The satellite derived ZSD product could be therefore used as an additional source of information for WFD and MSFD reporting purposes.  相似文献

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), Office of Water, is developing a risk assessment protocol for determining microbiological pathogen risks in water (drinking, recreational, waste waters, etc.). This effort has been conducted in collaboration with the International Life Sciences Institute. A microbiological risk assessment framework was prepared and has been peer reviewed in the open literature and vetted at the USEPA and other federal government risk assessment venues. Some goals in development of the Framework were to make it comprehensive, easy to understand and to use, since it is recognized that improvements to the framework structure and instructional material would facilitate its use. The USEPA's Office of Water wishes to develop improved tools, methods, and approaches for conducting the analysis phase for risk assessments and would like to evaluate its efficacy for a broad range of waterborne pathogens in water/wastewater media. Improved understanding of microbiological survival, infectivity, and virulence factors is needed, especially at the genomic and proteomic levels to accurately assess the occurrence and fate of pathogens in water and to predict what intrinsic factors allow pathogens to be invasive and virulent. Development of improved dose-response models (including animal models) for pathogen exposures focusing on the dynamic circumstances of immunity, secondary spread, and sensitive subpopulations, would be useful additions to the Framework. In the future, USEPA may consider establishing comprehensive pathogen risk assessment guidelines that all its program offices can use.  相似文献
