We study a model of the chemostat with two species competing for two perfectly substitutable resources in the case of linear functional response. Lyapunov methods are used to provide sufficient conditions for the global asymptotic stability of the coexistence equilibrium. Then, using compound matrix techniques, we provide a global analysis in a subset of parameter space. In particular, we show that each solution converges to an equilibrium, even in the case that the coexistence equilibrium is a saddle. Finally, we provide a bifurcation analysis based on the dilution rate. In this context, we are able to provide a geometric interpretation that gives insight into the role of the other parameters in the bifurcation sequence. Lactoperoxidase (LPO) is found in mucosal surfaces and exocrine secretions including milk, tears, and saliva and has physiological significance in antimicrobial defense which involves (pseudo-)halide oxidation. LPO compound III (a ferrous-dioxygen complex) is known to be formed rapidly by an excess of hydrogen peroxide and could participate in the observed catalase-like activity of LPO. The present anaerobic stopped-flow kinetic analysis was performed in order to elucidate the catalytic mechanism of LPO and the kinetics of compound III formation by probing the reactivity of ferrous LPO with hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen. It is shown that ferrous LPO heterolytically cleaves hydrogen peroxide forming water and oxyferryl LPO (compound II). The two-electron oxidation reaction follows second-order kinetics with the apparent bimolecular rate constant being (7.2+/-0.3) x 10(4) M(-1) s(-1) at pH 7.0 and 25 degrees C. The H2O2-mediated conversion of compound II to compound III follows also second-order kinetics (220 M(-1) s(-1) at pH 7.0 and 25 degrees C). Alternatively, compound III is also formed by dioxygen binding to ferrous LPO at an apparent bimolecular rate constant of (1.8+/-0.2) x 10(5) M(-1) s(-1). Dioxygen binding is reversible and at pH 7.0 the dissociation constant (K(D)) of the oxyferrous form is 6 microM. The rate constant of dioxygen dissociation from compound III is higher than conversion of compound III to ferric LPO, which is not affected by the oxygen concentration and follows a biphasic kinetics. A reaction cycle including the redox intermediates compound II, compound III, and ferrous LPO is proposed, which explains the observed (pseudo-)catalase activity of LPO in the absence of one-electron donors. The relevance of these findings in LPO catalysis is discussed.  相似文献

The aims of this paper have been to describe (1) the general structure of the compound eye of the spittle bug Philaenus spumarius, (2) the eye's post-embryonic development, (3) photomechanical changes upon dark/light adaptation in the eye, and (4) how leaving the semi-aquatic foam bubble and turning into an adult affects the organization of the eye. Spittle bugs, irrespective of size or sex, possess apposition type compound eyes. The eye's major components (i.e. facet, cornea, cone and rhabdom) grow rather isometrically from the smallest nymph to the adult. Photomechanical changes can occur during both nymphal and adult phases and manifest themselves through pigment granules and mitochondria migrating to and away from the rhabdom, and rhabdom diameters varying with time of day and ambient light level. When a nymph transforms into an adult, its compound eyes’ dorsoventral axes widen, facet diameters increase, facet shapes turn from circular to pentagonal and hexagonal, the cornea thickens and the rhabdoms become thinner. The agile adults, free from the foam that surrounds the nymphs, can be expected to need their vision more than the nymphs, and the changes in eye structure do, indeed, indicate that the adults have superior visual acuity. A thicker cornea in the adults reduces water loss and protects the compound eye from mechanical and light-induced damage: protection given to the nymphs by their foam bubbles.  相似文献

目的探讨复方嗜酸乳杆菌片联合乳果糖对糖尿病便秘患者脑肠肽水平的影响。方法选择2018年1月-2019年8月在我院内科门诊治疗的糖尿病便秘患者92例,随机分为观察组和对照组各46例。两组均予建立良好生活习惯、饮食调整、适当运动、排便锻炼及药物控制血糖等基础治疗。对照组在此基础上加乳果糖口服液15 mL/次,2次/d,口服。观察组在对照组基础上加复方嗜酸乳杆菌片1.0 g/次,3次/d,温开水服用。两组均连用12周。观察两组治疗前后血清脑肠肽[一氧化氮(NO)、P物质(SP)和血管活性肠肽(VIP)]水平及便秘症状评分的变化,并比较其临床效果。结果治疗12周后,两组血清NO和VIP水平及Wexner便秘症状评分较前下降,血清SP水平较前上升(P0.05),且治疗后观察组变化幅度较对照组明显(P0.05)。观察组临床总有效率为95.7%,明显优于对照组的82.6%(χ~2=4.040,P=0.046)。结论复方嗜酸乳杆菌片联合乳果糖治疗糖尿病便秘患者的效果确切,其作用机制可能是通过调节脑肠肽分泌,减少NO和VIP分泌,促进SP分泌,从而提高结肠传输功能。  相似文献

A brief review of the work on crustacean compound eyes is given. Two main types of eye have been recognized: apposition and superposition. The ontogeny of the eyes of the common prawn Palaemon serratus is examined using a variety of methods: photography of live specimens, histological sections, SEM and TEM. In common with other decapod larvae, the common prawn hatches with apposition eyes having circular lenses packed hexagonally. After metamorphosis the gradual squaring of the eye facets, begun during the larval phase, is completed. This is an essential prerequisite for the functioning of the facultative superposition reflecting optics found in long-bodied decapods (e.g. shrimps, prawns and lobsters) and some Anomura. The possible phylogenetical significance of superposition, reflecting optics is also discussed.  相似文献

Currently available volumes of compounds and biological activity data enable large-scale analyses of compound promiscuity (multi-target activity). To aid in the exploration of structure-promiscuity relationships, promiscuity cliffs (PCs) were introduced previously. In analogy to activity cliffs, PCs were defined as pairs of structurally analogous compounds with large differences in the number of targets they are active against. Hence, PCs reveal small chemical modifications that are implicated in promiscuity. As introduced originally, PCs were identified by applying the matched molecular pair formalism and were thus confined to changes at a single substitution site. Herein, PCs with multiple substitution sites are introduced and a pilot study on a large collection of protein kinase inhibitors is reported, which provide excellent test cases for promiscuity analysis. For dual-site PCs (dsPCs), which dominated the distribution of multi-site PCs, an extended data structure was generated comprising a dsPC and two single-site analogs accounting for individual substitutions. Using a canonical representation, extended dsPCs are intuitive and easy to interpret from a chemical perspective. The analog quartet representing an extended dsPC is rich in structure-promiscuity relationship information and makes it possible to evaluate the potential interplay of chemical modifications implicated in promiscuity. Furthermore, extended dsPCs provide insights into possible experimental causes of apparent differences in analog promiscuity such as varying test frequencies. Hence, the newly introduced PC format should be of interest for exploring origins of compound promiscuity in medicinal chemistry and for formulating experimentally testable target hypotheses for analogs.  相似文献

Summary The generalogical relationships of photoreceptor cells within the compound eye ofDrosophila have been studied using cell labelling, with either3H-thymidine or recessive mutations, during the third larval stage. It has been found that photoreceptor and secondary pigment cells arise from different precursor cells. Under the present experimental conditions, precursors of receptor cells give rise to about 8 elements which differentiate as R cells of two different groups. One of the cells differentiates as R7 and the remaining as any one of the R1 to R6. The last cells behave initially as equivalent, and can differentiate within the same or within different, but neighbouring, ommatidia. The class of R1 to R6 cell in which each one of these elements differentiates, seems to depend on the time of its origin. The implications of these findings for the formation of the ommatidial pattern are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The relative net fitness of a compound chromosome strain of Drosophila melanogaster was about 0.05, compared with the chromosomally normal strain from which it was derived. Based on meiotic considerations alone, the expected relative fitness was about 0.25. There were no significant differences in fertility between the compound and normal strains; the compound strain produced about 28% as many offspring as the normal strain and developed faster than the normal strain in two replicates, and slower in one replicate. The low relative fitness of the compound strain was apparently due to assortative mating, in which normal females discriminated strongly against compound males. Implications for pest control projects are dicussed.  相似文献
