The vegetative and reproductive morphology, culm and rhizome anatomy and seed surface micromorphology ofRhodocoma are described. It is shown that this variation is best contained by recognizing three new species in the genus. These new taxa are described, and the phylogeny of the genus is investigated by cladistic analysis. The environmental parameters and distributions of the species are related to the cladogram. This suggests that the species are at present ecologically separated, and indicates that the speciation may have been sympatric. This is the first support for the hypothesis that sympatric speciation may have been important in the speciose Cape flora.  相似文献

The copepodite antennule development of several harpacticoid families is studied and male antennule development of 5 species is schematically illustrated. The origin of newly formed segments can be determined by seta numbers of segments, relative segment length, furrows indicating previous articulations and by the position of the segment which bears the proximal aesthetasc. At least in some species sexual dimorphism of antennules is present from C II onwards. Females practically reach the adult antennular state at C V whereas males undergo drastic changes from C V to C VI with proximal addition of segments, and often with distal fusions and formation of a unique armature due to functional adaptations in clasping behaviour. No correlation has been found between clasping mode, male antennule type and taxonomic level. In closely related species of the same genus both chirocer and subchirocer antennules are found. The postnaupliar development of the chirocer type can proceed along different ways. Consequently it is suggested that at least chirocer antennules have originated several times independently during harpacticoid evolution.  相似文献

Summary A mathematical theory for computing the probabilities of various nucleotide configurations among related species is developed, and the probability of obtaining the correct tree (topology) from nucleotide sequence data is evaluated using models of evolutionary trees that are close to the tree of mitochondrial DNAs from human, chimpanzee, gorilla, orangutan, and gibbon. Special attention is given to the number of nucleotides required to resolve the branching order among the three most closely related organisms (human, chimpanzee, and gorilla). If the extent of DNA divergence is close to that obtained by Brown et al. for mitochondrial DNA and if sequence data are available only for the three most closely related organisms, the number of nucleotides (m*) required to obtain the correct tree with a probability of 95% is about 4700. If sequence data for two outgroup species (orangutan and gibbon) are available, m* becomes about 2600–2700 when the transformed distance, distance-Wagner, maximum parsimony, or compatibility method is used. In the unweighted pair-group method, m* is not affected by the availability of data from outgroup species. When these five different tree-making methods, as well as Fitch and Margoliash's method, are applied to the mitochondrial DNA data (1834 bp) obtained by Brown et al. and by Hixson and Brown, they all give the same phylogenetic tree, in which human and chimpanzee are most closely related. However, the trees considered here are gene trees, and to obtain the correct species tree, sequence data for several independent loci must be used.  相似文献

The rudimentary atria, and the posterior sperm funnels and sperm ducts, which occur in some species of the Lumbriculidae, are discussed. It is shown that the posterior location of funnels and sperm ducts is the result of a forward shift of the atria, which refutes Stephenson's supposition that the Lumbriculidae is the most archaic family of the present-day Oligochaeta.  相似文献

The Hirudinea have a number of arthropod-like characters, including a true haemocoel and compound eyes. This 'arthropodization' may have bearing on the origin of the arthropod phylum Uniramia. Certain traits shared by Clitellata and Uniramia are interpreted as primitive and compatible with the view that a monophyletic link exists between these two groups: 'internal' fertilization, egg protected by cocoon/chorion, egg yolky with direct development not invoking a planktotrophic larval stage, formation and fate of presumptive areas in early embryology, uniramous lobopodial-like structures and the presence of uniramous mouthparts. Still other traits shared by Hirudinea and Hexapoda are interpreted as advanced and evidence for a paraphyletic relationship between leeches and pterygote insects: oogenesis with nurse cells, cephalization and segmental constancy. It is proposed that a major theme in uniramian evolution is the invasion of land from freshwater by a pre-lobopodial clitellate-like ancestor, the lobopodium being an adaptation to terrestrial locomotion. These views give new significance to the poorly studied fossil segmented worms from freshwater and terrestrial palaeohabitats.  相似文献

The cross-reactivity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 28 nonhuman primates was investigated with ten kinds of Leu series of monoclonal antibodies specific to human T-, natural killer/killer-, and B-cells. The chimpanzees possessed all ten epitopes examined but the orangutan lacked Leu4 and Leu7 epitopes and the gibbons lacked Leu4, Leu7, and Leu12 epitopes. In addition to the above epitopes, the Old World monkeys lacked Leu1 and Leu10 epitopes. The Leu3a/Leu2a cell ratios varied from 0 to 1.56 among the 12 macaque species and this enabled classification of these species into three groups. In the New World monkeys, Leu2a epitope was absent, whereas Leu11a epitope was detected in several species and Leu3a epitope was found only in the owl monkeys. The prosimians expressed only HLA-DR epitope.  相似文献

In spite of the increasing popularity of cladistic methods in studies of primate systematics, few authors have investigated the effects of parallel evolution when such methods are applied to empirical data. To counter the effects of parallelism, cladistic techniques rely on the principle of evolutionary parsimony. When parsimony procedures are used to reconstruct the phylogeny of the Lemuridae, nine highly parsimonious phylogenies can be deduced. Further choice among these competing hypotheses of relationship is determined by the extent to which one embraces the parsimony principle. The phylogeny obtained by the most rigorous adherence to the parsimony principle is one which is wholly consistent with traditional evolutionary classifications of the Lemuridae. Moderate levels of parallelism can lead to the generation of several plausible, alternative phylogenetic hypotheses; less than 25% of the characters analyzed here need have evolved in parallel, yet they are largely responsible for the ambiguity of the nine different lemurid phylogenies. This suggests that phylogeny reconstructions based entirely on cladistic methods do not provide a suitable basis for the construction of classifications for groups such as the order Primates, where the degree of parallelism is likely to be quite high.  相似文献

Summary An ultrastructural comparison of mammalian, reptilian, and amphibian lung alveolar cells, and avian lung atrial cells reveals that morphologically similar cytoplasmic bodies (cytosomes) occur in these cells. The cytosomes, which appear generally as osmiophilic, lamellae-containing, membrane-bound, round bodies 0.3 to 0.5 in diameter, are also similar to bodies occurring in epithelial cells of both physoclistous and physostomatous swimbladders of fishes. Because the function of both lung alveolar and swimbladder epithelial cells is gas-handling, the possibility is raised that the morphologically similar lamellae-containing bodies of these vertebrate cells are functionally identical. One function, suggested by other investigators, is that, in mammalian lungs, these bodies supply a surface-tension lowering material (surfactant). Because several assumptions concerning this proposed function remain unproved, an alternative proposal is speculatively explored. The suggestion is offered that cytosomes contain an antioxidant needed to protect alveolar and swimbladder cells against the toxic effects of the relatively high concentration of oxygen to which these cells are exposed.Supported by a research grant from the American Cancer Society, Oregon Division, Inc.  相似文献

Summary To investigate molecular evolution in a mammalian order with a comprehensive fossil record, we have constructed-globin-like gene cluster maps for members of the order Perissodactyla. Although the arrangement of genes is the same in the five Equidae examined, the tapir and rhinoceros differ from each other and the horse in the position and number of their genes, but not in the arrangement of their and genes. In contrast to morphological work, a dendrogram derived from restriction site maps associates the tapir with the horse rather than with the rhinoceros; however, this phylogeny is not statistically significant. Among the Equidae,Equus caballus emerges as an outgroup, in agreement with data from other disciplines.  相似文献
