Summary We studied the influence of diet composition and breadth on the subsequent acceptability of three novel plants to sixth instarSchistocerca americana. Rearing diets of equal breadth differing in composition, and diets differing in breadth, significantly altered first meal length on some but not all of the test plants. These effects on palatability altered and at times reversed the palatability hierarchy of insects reared on different diets. The effects of rearing insects on broad diets were not produced by exposure to the plant odors alone, but apparently required contact with a diversity of plants while feeding. Switching diets for 24 h prior to testing did not alter preferences induced by rearing diets. The relationship of these patterns to induced preferences in other insects, and some possible mechanisms for generating induced preferences, are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The linkage relationship of 11 bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) seed proteins (including phaseolin), 9 enzyme loci, and theP locus were analyzed in backcross and F2 progenies by use of the software package Mapmaker. The progenies were obtained by crossing the breeding line XR-235-1 and the cultivar Calima. Allelic differences for seed protein loci were detected with SDS-PAGE and those for enzyme loci with starch gel electrophoresis and activity stains. The seed coat color of Calima is a red/beige mottled pattern and that of XR-235-1 is white. Segregation at theP locus was followed by recording the phenotype of the BC1S1 and F3 seed. A linkage group comprising ca. 90 cM was detected with the following gene order:Est-2 — 11 —Pha — 8 — (Spe/Spg) — 24 — P — 9 — (Spa/Spv) — 16 —Spba — 22 —Mdh-1. In addition, another linkage group was detected: (Spd/Spf/Sph) — 5 -Spca.   • 1 Butterflies of Battus philenor were tested for their preferences for nectar sugars and amino acids in an outdoor cage experiment.
  • 2 The butterflies clearly preferred both sucrose and fructose over glucose. They also preferred sucrose over fructose.
  • 3 No other preferences were found to be statistically significant, although male butterflies tended to prefer a plain sugar solution over a sugar solution containing a mixture of amino acids: females consumed both of these solutions in almost equal proportions.
  • 4 The results are discussed with respect to nectar composition of butterfly pollinated flowers, flower preferences, physiological and reproductive aspects of butterflies.

Summary Total endosperm proteins extracted from both several common wheat cultivars and some intervarietal substitution lines derived from them were fractionated according to their molecular weight in a high resolution one-dimensional gel electrophoresis. The four donor cultivars and the recipient one — Chinese Spring, possessed differentially migrating protein bands in the fractions of high molecular weight (HMW) glutenins and gliadins. Several of these bands were identified for the first time in this study. By utilizing intervarietal substitution lines the control of the HMW glutenins and gliadins by chromosomes of homoeologous group 1 was either reaffirmed or, for the new bands, established. Several HMW gliadin subunits showed a considerable variation in their staining intensity in the intervarietal substitution lines indicating that their expression was dependent on the genetic background.This paper is based on a portion of a dissertation to be submitted by G. Summary Aneuploid stocks, which included Triticum aestivum/alien, disomic, chromosome addition lines, wheat/alien, ditelosomic, chromosome addition lines, and the available aneuploids of Chinese Spring wheat, were used to locate genes that influence milling energy requirement (ME). Genes that affected ME were found on all seven homoeologous chromosome groups. The addition of complete wheat chromosomes 1B, 1D, 2A, 2D, 5B, 6B, 7B and 7D increased ME. Positive effects were also found in specific chromosome arms: 1BS, 2DS, 5AS, 5BS and 6BL. Wheat chromosome 3B conditioned low ME and the gene(s) responsible was located on the short arm. Other negative effects were attributed to wheat chromosome arms 4BL, 4DL, 5DS and 6DS. Alien chromosome additions that conferred high ME included 2H, 5H, 6H and 7H of barley, Hordeum vulgare and 2R, 2R, 4R, 4RL, 6R, 6RL and 7RL of rye, Secale cereale. Those that conferred a low ME included 1H ch of H. chilense, and 6u and 7u of Aegilops umbellulata, 5R and 5RS of S. cereale and 5R m and 5R mS of S. montanum. Although the control of ME is polygenic, there is a major effect of genes located on the short arms of homoeologous group 5 chromosomes.  相似文献

A model is used to study quantitatively the impact of a good genes process and direct natural selection on the evolution of a mating preference. The expression of a male display trait is proportional to genetic quality, which is determined by the number of deleterious mutations a male carries throughout his genome. Genetic variances and covariances, including the covariance between the preference and male trait that drives the good genes process, are allowed to evolve under an infinitesimal model. Results suggest that the good genes process generates only weak indirect selection on preferences, with an effective selection intensity of a few percent or less. If preferences are subject to direct natural selection of the intensity observed for other characters, the good genes process alone is not expected to exaggerate the male trait by more than a few phenotypic standard deviations, contrary to what is observed in highly sexually selected species. Good genes can, however, cause substantial exaggeration if preference genes are nearly selectively neutral. Alternatively, direct selection on preference genes, acting on mating behavior itself or on the genes' pleiotropic effects, can cause mating preferences and male display traits to be exaggerated by any degree. Direct selection of preference genes may therefore play an important role in species that show extreme sexual selection.  相似文献

The common inhibitor (CI) has been studied morphologically and electrophysiologically in the fifth thoracic ganglion of crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). It has a large soma and possesses two separate dendritic fields arising from distinct integrative segments.In vitro preparations display motor outputs ranging from tonic activity to fictive locomotion. The CI's tonic firing frequency increases as more excitors are recruited, and displays two peaks of frequency during fictive locomotion, one during stance, the other during swing.Paired intracellular recordings have been used to demonstrate the different central synaptic connections received or made by the CI. At least 27% of the proximal excitors receive monosynaptic connections from the CI corresponding to post-synaptic depolarizations of small amplitude mediated by GABA. However as they do not change the overall activities of the excitors which receive them, they may be used for local inhibition within the dendrites. Besides, electrical synapses between several proximal excitors and the CI may synchronize their activity.The CI receives synaptic connections arising from interneurones. Some are direct either by inhibitory monosynaptic connections or by electrical couplings whereas others arise through polysynaptic pathways. All these connections are functionally significant in the control of the CI firing activity and in its motor coordinations.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test the influence of sex, age, social rank, matriline membership, posture, and visual and tactual motor control on manual preferences inSaimiri sciureus. A well-established social group of 12 squirrel monkeys, aged 2 to 14 yrs and consisting of two matrilines with social rank known for each animal, was presented with four different food-reaching tasks and assessed for hand preferences with a minimum of 100 reaches per animal. Frequency of occurrence of hand preferences at the group level and degree of hand preferences at the individual level depended on posture and on whether the reaching act took place under visual or tactual guidance. Sex, age, social rank, and matriline membership were not found to determine frequency of occurrence, direction or degree of hand preferences with the exception of one task in which a significant negative correlation between the degree of hand preference and age was found. Nine out of 12 monkeys showed task-dependent changes in the hand they used preferentially while only three animals preferred the same hand in all four tasks. Significant preferences for the use of right or left hand on a given task were distributed almost equally between individuals. Thus, the results of this study suggest task-specific demands like posture and/or whether reaching was visually or tactually guided to be the major correlates of hand preferences in food-reaching tasks in squirrel monkeys.  相似文献

The results of a series of experiments conducted in our laboratory on the ornamental common carp (koi), aimed at optimizing heat-shock chromosome-set manipulation procedures, are described. The timing of heat-shock initiation was expressed in the relative unit of embryological age (0) in order to standardize this parameter, the absolute time for heat-shock initiation being calculated from duration of one 0 at two different pre-treatment water temperatures. Heat shocks were applied within the periods of 0.05–0.60 0 and 1.20–2.20 0 which, respectively, cover the successive phases of the 2nd meiotic division and the 1st cleavage. The highest production of diploid gynogenetic offspring was observed when heat shocks were initiated at 0.15–0.25 0 and at 1.5 0, after insemination, corresponding to anaphase of meiosis-II, and metaphase of the 1st cleavage, respectively. Similar results were obtained irrespective of the different pre-treatment water temperatures, thus confirming the possibility of standardizing heat-shock timing by 0.  相似文献

Suppression of phaseolin and lectin accumulation in common bean resulted in higher concentrations of bean seed polypeptides with apparent molecular weights of 54 kDa and from 70 to 84 kDa on SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Polypeptides of 54 and 56 kDa segregated as products of different alleles. Genes for the 54/56 kDa bands and phaseolin were estimated to be 26.2±3.7 map units apart. The 54 kDa band phenotype manifested by SDS-PAGE consisted of from one to three polypeptides of 54 kDa MW on 2D gels, and the 56 kDa phenotype consisted of one polypeptide of 56 kDa plus two minor polypeptides of 54-54.5 kDa molecular weight. The pKI of these polypeptides was approximately 5.25. The methionine content of the 54 kDa polypeptides of the cultivar Great Northern Star was 1.6±0.1 g/100 g protein, which was not statistically different from the value (1.5±0.1%) obtained for phaseolin isolated by the same procedure. F2 seeds deficient for phaseolin and lectin contained as much total N per g as wild-type seeds and were not shrunken, but contained 50% more free amino acids. F2 seeds from two of the three populations contained from 8 to 13% less methionine per mg total N.  相似文献
