The association between testosterone and economic risk is not well-understood and is understudied. The present study aimed to further characterize what if any relationship testosterone has with risky economic decisions. To do so, 154 participants (78 men) completed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) (Bechara et al., 1994) and also provided saliva samples, which were assayed for endogenous testosterone levels using radioimmunoassay. High-levels of endogenous testosterone were associated with choosing less frequently from advantageous IGT decks of cards, indicating greater risk taking. The data showed that the effects of testosterone on IGT performance were similar for men and women. High-testosterone women and high-testosterone men made riskier choices than their low-testosterone counterparts of the same sex, and this effect was pronounced in women. Thus, high levels of testosterone are associated with willingness to incur greater risk in both sexes.  相似文献

Callitrichine primates (marmosets and tamarins) often remain in their natal groups beyond the time of sexual maturity. Although studies have characterized the development of female reproductive function in callitrichine offspring, less is known about the male reproductive development. To document reproductive development in male marmosets, we monitored urinary androgen (uA) excretion in males housed in a captive colony of white-faced marmosets (Callithrix geoffroyi). Young male marmosets showed relatively low and stable rates of uA excretion early in life, with elevated production at the end of the juvenile period (9-10 months) and again at the onset of adulthood (16 months). uA levels of adult breeding males were also measured to compare to adult-aged sons. Although breeding males did have higher uA levels than their adult-aged sons, these differences did not reach conventional levels of significance. Evidence from some other reports has suggested that androgen levels of males in other species are influenced by social factors, such as the presence of a sexually receptive female or of dependent offspring. In this study, however, uA levels did not vary, based on their mothers' pregnancy status or the presence of younger siblings in the natal group. Patterns of androgen excretion in the white-faced marmoset roughly reflect those of other callitrichine species. Furthermore, unlike callitrichine daughters, gonadal activity in sons does not seem to be sensitive to within-group social cues.  相似文献

There is evidence that the cognitive skills that enable an individual to evaluate their own physical characteristics and those of others are an important strategy for recognizing a potential rival in intrasexual competition in humans. It has been shown that these strategies are facilitated by steroid hormones such as testosterone (T) and cortisol (C). This study examines whether men recognize as attractive some facial characteristics of other men that the literature reports as attractive to women when observing the faces of other men, under the hypothesis that the presence of these features indicates a potential rival. The characteristics evaluated were facial fluctuating asymmetry (FA), dominance (D), and assertiveness (A). In addition, we investigated whether the recognition of these facial characteristics depended upon the characteristics of the evaluator, that is, of the man's own FA, D, and A, or on the concentration of T and C in saliva. We found that evaluators with greater FA (asymmetric faces) and lower concentrations of C rated the faces of more symmetrical men as more attractive to women and as the most likely to represent potential rivals. Men with asymmetric faces exhibited higher levels of T than low FA males, although the difference was not significant. Conversely, men with low levels of FA (symmetric) identified the faces of more assertive men as the most attractive to women and the most likely to represent potential rivals. We concluded that men with high FA levels are more prone to recognize a potential rival in others according to female preferences, and this identification enables them to reduce the cost of competition.  相似文献

Contest decisions are influenced by the outcomes of recent fights (winner–loser effects). Steroid hormones and serotonin are closely associated with aggression and therefore probably also play important roles in mediating winner–loser effects. In mangrove rivulus fish, Kryptolebias marmoratus, individuals with higher testosterone (T), 11-ketotestosterone and cortisol levels are more capable of winning, but titres of these hormones do not directly mediate winner–loser effects. In this study, we investigated the effects of winning/losing experiences on brain expression levels of the receptor genes for androgen (AR), oestrogen α/β (ERα/β), glucocorticoid (GR) and serotonin (5-HT1AR). The effect of contest experience on AR gene expression depended on T levels: repeated losses decreased, whereas repeated wins increased AR gene expression in individuals with low T but not in individuals with medium or high T levels. These results lend strong support for AR being involved in mediating winner–loser effects, which, in previous studies, were more detectable in individuals with lower T. Furthermore, the expression levels of ERα/β, 5-HT1AR and GR genes were higher in individuals that initiated contests against larger opponents than in those that did not. Overall, contest experience, underlying endocrine state and hormone and serotonin receptor expression patterns interacted to modulate contest decisions jointly.  相似文献

Using the Xiphophorus fish melanoma model, we show a strong male bias for sunlight‐induced malignant melanoma, consistent with that seen in the human population. To examine underlying factors, we exposed adult X. couchianus fish to a single, sublethal dose of UVB and measured circulating sex steroid hormones and expression of associated hormone receptor genes over a 24‐h period. We found that a single exposure had profound effects on circulating levels of steroid hormones with significant decreases for all free sex steroids at 6 and 24 h and increases in conjugated 2‐estradiol and 11‐ketotestosterone at 6 and 24 h, respectively. Whereas ARα expression increased in male and female skin, neither ARβ nor either of the ERs showed significant responses to UVB in either sex. The rapid response of male androgens and their receptors in the skin after UVB irradiation implicates hormones in the male bias of skin cancer and suggests that the photoendocrine response immediately after UV exposure may be relevant to melanomagenesis.  相似文献

Understanding underlying physiological differences between the sexes in circulating androgens and how hormonal variation affects morphology–performance relationships may help clarify the evolution of sexual dimorphism in diverse taxa. Using a widely distributed Australian lizard (Eulamprus quoyii) with weak sexual dimorphism and no dichromatism, we tested whether circulating androgens differed between the sexes and whether they covaried with morphological and performance traits (bite force, sprint speed, endurance). Males had larger head dimensions, stronger bite force, faster sprint speed, and longer endurance compared to females. We found that the sexes did not differ in androgen concentrations and that androgens were weakly associated with both morphological and performance traits. Interestingly, high circulating androgens showed a nonlinear relationship with bite force in males and not females, with this relationship possibly being related to alternative male reproductive tactics. Our results suggest that androgens are not strongly correlated with most performance and morphological traits, although they may play an important organizational role during the development of morphological traits, which could explain the differences in morphology and thus performance between the sexes. One of the primary assumptions of the immunocompetence hypothesisis that testosterone is immunosuppressive. Although many studiesin birds and mammals have supported this assumption, conflictingresults have been reported in a variety of species. We investigatedthe effects of testosterone manipulation on both cell-mediatedand humoral immunity in adult songbirds, European starlings(Sturnus vulgaris). Male and female starlings were wild-caught,housed in the laboratory, and implanted with either empty silasticcapsules or capsules containing testosterone. Six weeks after implantation, humoral immunity was assessed by injecting thebirds with a novel antigen, keyhole limpet hemocyanin, andmeasuring specific antibody responses 10 and 15 days latervia an enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay. Cell-mediated immunitywas assessed 7 weeks after implantation via intradermal injectionof the T-cell mitogen phytohemagglutinin into the wing web and measuring the degree of swelling 24 h later. Antibody responsesto antigenic challenge were significantly suppressed in testosterone-treatedfemales 10 days post-injection and in both sexes 15 days post-injection.Furthermore, there was a significant inverse relationship betweenindividual variability in antibody responsiveness and plasmatestosterone concentrations. Cell-mediated responses to phytohemagglutininstimulation were also significantly suppressed in testosterone-treatedmales compared to same-sex controls. Testosterone treatmentsignificantly increased plasma corticosterone concentrations compared to controls, and the possibility of this effect mediatingthe immunosuppressive effects of testosterone is discussed.The present study is among the first to demonstrate testosterone-inducedsuppression of both cell-mediated and humoral immunity in aspecies of songbird.  相似文献

Secondary sexual characters may have evolved in part to signalresistance to parasites. Avian song has been hypothesized tobe involved in this process, but the role of parasites in modulatingacoustic communication systems in birds remains largely unknown,owing to lack of experiments. We studied the relationship betweenparasitism, testosterone, song performance, and mating successin male collared flycatchers (Ficedula albicollis) by experimentallychallenging their immune system with a novel antigen. We predictedthat a challenge of the immune system would reduce song performance,and that this reduction would be conditional on the size ofa visual sexual signal, the forehead patch that was previouslyfound to reflect resistance. An antagonistic linkage betweentestosterone and immune function would predict that a challengeof the immune system should suppress testosterone level. Animmunological treatment by sheep red blood cells (SRBCs) triggereda decrease in body mass, testosterone level, and song rate,but other song traits were not significantly affected by theantigen challenge. Initial testosterone level was associatedwith forehead patch size and all song traits except song rate.SRBC injection caused stronger reduction in song rate amongmales with smaller forehead patches, and the change in songrate was also predictable by song features such as strophe complexityand length. We show that song rate and other song characteristicsmay be important cues in male-male competition and female choice.These results suggest that parasite-mediated sexual selectionhas contributed in shaping a complex acoustic communicationsystem in the collared flycatcher, and that testosterone mayplay an important role in this process. Parasitism may drivea multiple signaling mechanism involving acoustic and visualtraits with different signal function.  相似文献
