The acclimation capacity of leading edge tree populations is crucially important in a warming climate. Theoretical considerations suggest that adaptation through genetic change is needed, but this may be a slow process. Both positive and catastrophic outcomes have been predicted, while empirical studies have lagged behind theory development. Here we present results of a 30‐year study of 55,000 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) trees, planted in 15 common gardens in three consecutive years near and beyond the present Scots pine tree line. Our results show that, contrary to earlier predictions, even long‐distance transfers to the North can be successful when soil fertility is high. This suggests that present northern populations have a very high acclimation capacity. We also found that while temperature largely controls Scots pine growth, soil nutrient availability plays an important role—in concert with interpopulation genetic variation—in Scots pine survival and fitness in tree line conditions. These results suggest that rapid range expansions and substantial growth enhancements of Scots pine are possible in fertile sites as seed production and soil nutrient mineralization are both known to increase under a warming climate. Finally, as the ontogenetic pattern of tree mortality was highly site specific and unpredictable, our results emphasize the need for long‐term field trials when searching for the factors that control fitness of trees in the variable edaphic and climatic conditions of the far North.  相似文献

The effects of leaf-air vapor pressure deficit (VPD) on the transient and steady-state stomatal responses to photon flux density (PFD) were evaluated in Piper auritum, a pioneer tree, and Piper aequale, a shade tolerant shrub, that are both native to tropical forests at Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, México. Under constant high-PFD conditions, the stomata of shade-acclimated plants of both species were sensitive to VPD, exhibiting a nearly uniform decrease in gs as VPD increased. Acclimation of P. auritum to high light increased the stomatal sensitivity to VPD that was sufflcient to cause a reduction in transpiration at high VPD's. At low PFD, where gs was already reduced, there was little additional absolute change with VPD for any species or growth condition. The stomatal response to 8-min duration lightflecks was strongly modulated by VPD and varied between the species and growth light conditions. In P. aequale shade plants, increased VPD had no effect on the extent of stomatal opening but caused the rate of closure after the lightfleck to be faster. Thus, the overall response to a lightfleck changed from hysteretic (faster opening than closure) to symmetric (similar opening and closing rates). Either high or low VPD caused gs not to return to the steady-state value present before the lightfleck. At high VPD the value after was considerably less than the value before whereas at low VPD the opposite occurred. Shade-acclimated plants of P. auritum showed only a small gs response to lightflecks, which was not affected by VPD. Under sunfleck regimes in the understory, the stomatal response of P. aequale at low VPD may function to enhance carbon gain by increasing the induction state. At high VPD, the shift in the response enhances water use efficiency but at the cost of reduced assimilation.  相似文献

This paper reports the temporal variation (2002–2004) in foliar δ13C values, which are indicative of long-term integrated photosynthetic and water use characteristics, of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) trees in a montane forest at Mongonmorit, NE Mongolia. At the stand, the δ13C value for understory shaded leaves was more negative by 2‰ on average than that for sunlit leaves sampled concurrently from open and sun-exposed environments in a forest gap. The δ13C value of both sunlit and shaded leaves showed pronounced intra- but relatively small inter-seasonal variations. The δ13C value was more positive for juvenile than mature leaves. We conjecture that juvenile leaves may derive carbon reserves in woody tissues (e.g., stems). Regardless of leaf habitats, the δ13C value was also affected by insect herbivores occurred in mid summer of 2003, being more negative in newly emerging leaves from the twigs after defoliation than in non-defoliated mature leaves. This pattern seems to contrast with that for the juvenile leaves in the early growing season. We surmise that the newly emerging leaves used stored organic carbon that was depleted due to fractionation during remobilization and translocation for leaf regrowth. There was also intra- and inter-seasonal variation in the foliar N concentrations and C:N ratios. A good positive (negative) correlation between the foliar δ13C values and N concentrations (C:N ratios) was also observed for both sunlit and shaded leaves, suggesting that the relationship between water and nitrogen use is a crucial factor affecting the plant carbon–water relationship in this mid latitude forest with a cold semiarid climate. Our isotopic data demonstrate that the larches in NE Mongolia exhibits relatively higher water use efficiency with a distinct within-season variability.  相似文献

In the oxidative muscles (musculi laterales superficiales) of crucian carp Carassius carassius acclimated for 6 weeks to either 5 or 25° C, the volume density and the surface density of fibres per tissue did not differ significantly between the control and experimental groups. The correlation ratio (μ2) for these values was below 50, 39·3 and 43·9 respectively. After acclimation to 5° C, the surface density of outer mitochondrial membrane per fibre increased significantly from 0·93 to 1·23m2 cm−3 in the summer population but dropped from 0·94 to 0·67 m2 cm−3 in the winter population. The surface density of outer mitochondrial membrane per mitochondrion increased from 3·24 to 4·52 m2 cm−3 in summer fish. After acclimation to 25° C, the surface density of inner mitochondrial membranes per muscle fibre decreased from 4·04 to 1·79 m2 cm−3 in summer fish and from 3·86 to 1·07 m2 cm−3 in winter fish. The surface density of inner mitochondrial membranes per mitochondrion increased from 14·17 to 15·60 m2cm−3 in summer fish but dropped from 13·91 to 10·67 m2 cm−3 in winter fish. Correlation matrices demonstrate a negative correlation of the surface density of outer mitochondrial membrane per mitochondrion with the volume density of mitochondria per fibre and temperature, suggesting cold-induced proliferation of small mitochondria. It was concluded that short-term cold acclimation increased surface area of the inner mitochondrial membranes in summer fish.  相似文献

对生长在云南西北部丽江及中甸迪庆尖顶羊肚菌进行的野外生态学调查研究结果表明,应顶羊肚菌具有较为广阔的生态适应幅度,在很多不同的生态条件下都能形成了实体,但不同生态条件下形成的子实体具有一定的差异;尖顶羊肚菌对土壤没有特殊的要求,在土壤肥力较好或较差的地域上都能形成子实体;羊顶羊肚菌遗传多样性丰富,采自然野生的实体在形态、大小、色泽等方面都有很大变异。对尖顶羊肚菌生物特性的了解有助于我们对该种真菌进行引种和驯化。  相似文献

Chloroplast thylakoid membranes of higher plants are damaged by freezing both in vivo and in vitro. The resulting inactivation of photosynthetic electron transport has been related to transient membrane rupture, leading to the loss of soluble electron transport proteins and osmotically active solutes from the thylakoid lumen. We have recently purified and sequenced a protein from cold acclimated cabbage, that protects thylakoids from this freeze-thaw damage. The protein belongs to the WAX9 family of nonspecific lipid transfer proteins, but has no detectable lipid transfer activity. Conversely, other transport-active lipid transfer proteins show no cryoprotective activity. We show here that cryoprotectin binds to thylakoid membranes. Both cryoprotective activity and membrane binding were inhibited in the presence of specific sugars, most effectively by Glc-6-S. The binding of cryoprotectin to thylakoids reduced the fluidity of the membrane lipids close to the membrane/solution interface, but not in the hydrophobic core region. Using immobilized liposomes we could show that cryoprotectin was able to bind to pure lipid membranes.  相似文献

The comparative ecophysiology of nine culture isolates of the eulittoral red alga Bostrychia radicans (Montagne) Montague collected at sites from seven states along the east coast of the U.S.A. was investigated. The growth response in relation to different salinity and light conditions as well as photosynthesis-irradiance curves were studied. In addition, the effect of salt treatment on the content of the isomeric polyols d -sorbitol and d -dulcitol was also studied. All isolates grew between salinities of 5.3 and 70 ppt but with quite different optima and maxima. The isolates were all adapted to low light levels, i.e. growth was already recorded at 2.5 μmol photons·m?2·s?1, and growth rates peaked between 40 and 60 μmol photons·m?2·s-1. These low-light requirements were also reflected by the photosynthesis-irradiance curves: all plants had low light compensation points (2.5–9.7 μmol photons ·m?2·?1) and low photon fluence rates for initial saturation of photosynthesis (38.1–84.7 μmol photons·m?2·s?1, indicating that these isolates are “shade-adapted.” Isolates from Florida and Georgia synthesized and accumulated both the osmolytes d -sorbitol and d -dulcitol in increasing salinities, whereas only d -sorbitol was present in plants from North Carolina north to Connecticut. d -sorbitol was always strongly involved in osmotic acclimation. In various isolates from the same location in South Carolina, both polyol patterns were found, i.e. d -sorbitol plus d -dulcitol and d -sorbitol only. All data indicate that B. radicans exhibits a broad salinity tolerance and a low-light preference, which explain the successful colonization of this alga on various intertidal and shaded substrates. The data also clearly indicate intraspecific differences among the nine isolates, which is interpreted as development of different physiological ecotypes.  相似文献

The effect of cold treatment on gene expression in two different barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars has been studied. Cold stress induced a set of new mRNAs as determined by in-vitro translation of coleoptile RNA obtained from control and stressed seedlings. These mRNAs accumulated with different kinetics, and the cold-induced proteins could be grouped into five categories. The first category (a) is represented by a single protein with Mr of 75 kDa that reaches its highest level of expression after 6 h at 5°C. This polypeptide readily accumulates in the plant tissues and it can be detected when proteins separated by two-dimensional electrophoresis are stained with silver nitrate. The other polypeptides appear later during the 1- to 4-d stress period (protein groups b and c), increase (group d), or decrease during the period of treatment (group e). Only minor differences between the two cultivars with different cold-resistance capacities were found when the in-vitro translation products were compared. 目的与方法使用生物组织氧耗测量系统测定了常氧冻伤(FN)、急性缺氧冻伤(FAH)和缺氧习服缺氧冻伤(FHAC)大鼠后肢重度冻伤前后腓肠肌耗氧量的变化,以探讨缺氧习服加重冻伤组织损伤的机理.结果冻前,FHAC组腓肠肌耗氧量降低26.2%.冻后1d,FN、FAH和FHAC组腓肠肌耗氧量为5.93±0.66,4.74±1.87和0.76±0.39[kPa/(g*min)],分别较各自冻前水平降低76.3%,77.9%和95.9%,FHAC组明显低于其余两组;冻后5d三组的耗氧量分别恢复至各自冻前水平的62.8%、44.9%和28.8%,FHAC组仍明显低于其余两组,提示缺氧习服冻伤后骨骼肌代谢率降低更明显,恢复更缓慢.结论缺氧习服和冻伤均使腓肠肌耗氧量明显减少,二者的叠加使缺氧习服大鼠冻后腓肠肌耗氧量进一步降低,表明组织代谢的变化是影响冻伤组织损伤及修复的主要因素之一.  相似文献

People are exposed to heat regularly due to their jobs or daily habits in cold winter, but few studies have reported whether parallel heat and cold exposure and diminish cold acclimation. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of alternating exposure to cold and heat on cold tolerance in eight young males. A daily acclimation program to cold and heat, which consisted of 2-h sitting at 10 °C air in the morning and 2-h running and rest at 30 °C air in the afternoon, was conducted for 14 consecutive days. Eight male subjects participated in a cold tolerance test (10 °C [ ± 0.3], 40%RH[ ± 3]) before (PRE) and after (POST) completing the alternating exposure program. During the cold tolerance test, subjects remained sitting upright on a chair for 60 min. Rectal temperature (Tre) was lower in POST than in PRE during the 60-min cold tolerance test (P = 0.027). During the cold tolerance test, systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressures in POST were lower than those in PRE (P = 0.006, P = 0.005, and P = 0.004). No significant differences in skin temperatures between PRE and POST were found for the cold tolerance test. There were no significant differences in energy expenditure during cold exposure between PRE and POST. Subjects felt less cold in POST than in PRE (P = 0.013) whereas there was no significant difference in overall thermal comfort between PRE and POST. These results suggest that cold adaptation can still occur in the presence of heat stress.  相似文献
