Management of non-point source pollution is of great importance in the context of coffee agriculture, as this land use often coincides with headwater streams that influence water quality at the basin scale. Sustainability certification programs, such as the Rainforest Alliance (RA), provide management guidelines that promote non-point source pollution control in coffee. One of these practices is the maintenance of shade trees within farms, required by RA at a minimum of 40% shade tree cover. Here we assess the effectiveness of this practice in Tarrazú, a high elevation coffee growing region in Costa Rica. We monitored indicators of non-point source pollution in streams with both high and low shade tree cover. Streams with High Shade Tree Cover (HSTC, N = 5 subwatersheds) had 35–55% cover, approximating or exceeding the RA recommendation of at least 40%; and streams with Low Shade Tree Cover (LSTC, N = 5 subwatersheds), had 18–31% cover. We monitored the ten study streams during the dry (April & December), transition (July), and peak (October) rainfall seasons of 2013, and compared responses using t-tests. We found support for the effectiveness of shade tree cover in controlling non-point source pollution: HSTC streams had significantly (p = 0.042) lower mean annual turbidity and significantly (p = 0.004) lower turbidity during the transition season. HSTC streams also had significantly (p = 0.05) lower conductivity values during the transition period, although this trend was weaker through the year. Subwatersheds with HSTC streams were characterized by a higher percentage of RA-certified coffee than LSTC streams. Our study provides evidence of the benefits of RA shade tree cover criteria for managing water quality within high elevation tropical agro-ecosystems, especially if implemented at the watershed scale. These results contribute to our understanding of the role of agroforestry certification on tropical ecosystem conservation, and are the first account of the effectiveness of a specific coffee certification guideline on non-point source pollution control.  相似文献

Annual row crops dominate agriculture around the world and have considerable negative environmental impacts, including significant greenhouse gas emissions. Transformative land‐use solutions are necessary to mitigate climate change and restore critical ecosystem services. Alley cropping (AC)—the integration of trees with crops—is an agroforestry practice that has been studied as a transformative, multifunctional land‐use solution. In the temperate zone, AC has strong potential for climate change mitigation through direct emissions reductions and increases in land‐use efficiency via overyielding compared to trees and crops grown separately. In addition, AC provides climate change adaptation potential and ecological benefits by buffering alley crops to weather extremes, diversifying income to hedge financial risk, increasing biodiversity, reducing soil erosion, and improving nutrient‐ and water‐use efficiency. The scope of temperate AC research and application has been largely limited to simple systems that combine one timber tree species with an annual grain. We propose two frontiers in temperate AC that expand this scope and could transform its climate‐related benefits: (i) diversification via woody polyculture and (ii) expanded use of tree crops for food and fodder. While AC is ready now for implementation on marginal lands, we discuss key considerations that could enhance the scalability of the two proposed frontiers and catalyze widespread adoption.  相似文献

Odor sensation is a sensory modality of considerable significance in the foraging behavior and interactional organization of ants. In the food bait technology, smell is the basis of attraction, which, in turn, is the line of bait use and a key parameter for judging efficacy. Yet, the currently available baits possess low attractiveness to many ant pests. Hence, strategies to produce ant bait with increased attractiveness are needed. Despite evidence that coffee has a diverse aroma complex that affects the behavior of honey bees and ants, its attraction to house-invading ants has yet to be investigated. In a series of Y-tube olfactometer bioassays, we examined the behavioral responses of Tapinoma indicum (TI), Monomorium pharaonis (MP) and Solenopsis geminata (SG) to various coffee-induced odor stimuli, comprised of extracts from Arabica, Robusta and Liberica. All coffee extracts showed an influence on the behavior of TI, MP and SG workers, with Arabica showed the most significant influence to the tested ants. The workers of TI, MP and SG were more attracted to the odor of 0.01% Arabica extract (ONE), in comparison with 0.05% Arabica extract (TWO) or 0.10% Arabica extract (THREE). Arabica extract mixed with sugar (S) elicited a significant attraction from workers of all three species in a balanced competition with either unsweetened Arabica extract or water. These results indicated that coffee, particularly Arabica, was attractive to the foragers of TI, MP and SG, thus, the use of coffee as a novel stimulus agent seems plausible in ant bait development.  相似文献

To determine whether globally increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations can affect carbon partitioning between nonstructural and structural carbon pools in agroforestry plantations, Populus nigra was grown in ambient air (about 370 μmol mol?1 CO2) and in air with elevated CO2 concentrations (about 550 μmol mol?1 CO2) using free‐air CO2 enrichment (FACE) technology. FACE was maintained for 5 years. After three growing seasons, the plantation was coppiced and one half of each experimental plot was fertilized with nitrogen. Carbon concentrations and stocks were measured in secondary sprouts in seasons of active growth and dormancy during 2 years after coppicing. Although FACE, N fertilization and season had significant tissue‐specific effects on carbon partitioning to the fractions of structural carbon, soluble sugars and starch as well as to residual soluble carbon, the overall magnitude of these shifts was small. The major effect of FACE and N fertilization was on cell wall biomass production, resulting in about 30% increased above ground stocks of both mobile and immobile carbon pools compared with fertilized trees under ambient CO2. Relative C partitioning between mobile and immobile C pools was not significantly affected by FACE or N fertilization. These data demonstrate high metabolic flexibility of P. nigra to maintain C‐homeostasis under changing environmental conditions and illustrate that nonstructural carbon compounds can be utilized more rapidly for structural growth under elevated atmospheric [CO2] in fertilized agroforestry systems. Thus, structural biomass production on abandoned agricultural land may contribute to achieving the goals of the Kyoto protocol.  相似文献

Plant defence mechanisms can reduce the digestive enzyme activity of insect pests. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the production of proteinase inhibitors, lipoxygenase and polyphenol oxidase activity in Coffea arabica (Catuai IAC 15) plants, and the digestive enzyme activity in the pest Leucoptera coffeella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae) after feeding on the plant. The production of proteinase inhibitors was evaluated with L‐BApNA as a substrate. We studied lipoxygenase activity with linoleic acid and polyphenol oxidase activity with catechol substrates, in coffee plants damaged (T1) and not damaged (T2) by L. coffeella. L. coffeella digestive enzyme activity was verified by trypsinlike (substrate l ‐BApNA and l ‐TAME), chymotrypsinlike (BTpNA and ATEE), cysteine proteases (l ‐BApNA) and total protease (azocasein). Proteinase inhibitor production and lipoxygenase and polyphenol oxidase activity in C. arabica increases (P ≤ 0.05) with L. coffeella damage. Our results provide important information that these enzymatic activities may play a role in plant defence processes in C. arabica. Trypsinlike activity increases, whereas chymotrypsin‐like and cysteine protease activity decrease in the midgut of L. coffeella, which acts as a defence mechanism.  相似文献

Agricultural conversion of tropical forests is a major driver of biodiversity loss. Slowing rates of deforestation is a conservation priority, but it is also useful to consider how species diversity is retained across the agricultural matrix. Here, we assess how bird diversity varies in relation to land use in the Taita Hills, Kenya. We used point counts to survey birds along a land‐use gradient that included primary forest, secondary vegetation, agroforest, timber plantation and cropland. We found that the agricultural matrix supports an abundant and diverse bird community with high levels of species turnover, but that forest specialists are confined predominantly to primary forest, with the matrix dominated by forest visitors. Ordination analyses showed that representation of forest specialists decreases with distance from primary forest. With the exception of forest generalists, bird abundance and diversity are lowest in timber plantations. Contrary to expectation, we found feeding guilds at similar abundances in all land‐use types. We conclude that whilst the agricultural matrix, and agroforest in particular, makes a strong contribution to observed bird diversity at the landscape scale, intact primary forest is essential for maintaining this diversity, especially amongst species of conservation concern.  相似文献

The chemotaxonomic relationships between Coffea (subgenus Coffea) species have been poorly studied to date and the compounds tested so far - chlorogenic acids, diterpenoids and purine alkaloids - did not enable the establishment of phylogenetic relationships analogous to those revealed by chloroplast and nuclear DNA studies. In the present study, the relationships between African Coffea species were assessed on the basis of their seed lipid composition. Fatty acids and sterols were determined in 59 genotypes belonging to 17 distinct Coffea species/origins. Principal Component Analysis of fatty acid and sterol data enabled easy identification of the few species for which one or several compounds could serve as a quantitative signature. Hierarchical Clustering classified the Coffea species in seven groups with both fatty acids and sterols. However, while groupings based on seed fatty acid composition showed remarkable ecological and geographical coherence, no phylogeographic explanation was found for the clusters retrieved from sterol data. When compared with previous phylogenetic studies, the groups deduced from seed fatty acid composition were remarkably congruent with the clades inferred from nuclear and plastid DNA sequences.  相似文献

The hot water soluble green coffee arabinogalactans, representing nearly 7% of total coffee bean arabinogalactans, were characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR and, after partial acid hydrolysis, by ESI-MS/MS. Data obtained showed that these are highly branched type II arabinogalactans covalently linked to proteins (AGP), with a protein moiety containing 10% of 4-hydroxyproline residues. They possess a beta-(1-->3)-Galp/beta-(1-->3,6)-Galp ratio of 0.80, with a sugars composition of Rha:Ara:Gal of 0.25:1.0:1.5, and containing 2mol% of glucuronic acid residues. Beyond the occurrence of single alpha-L-Araf residues and [alpha-L-Araf-(1-->5)-alpha-L-Araf-(1-->] disaccharide residues as side chains, these AGPs contain unusual side chains at O-3 position of the beta-(1-->6)-linked galactopyranosyl residues composed by [alpha-L-Rhap-(1-->5)-alpha-L-Araf-(1-->] and [alpha-L-Rhap-(1-->5)-alpha-L-Araf-(1-->5)-alpha-L-Araf-(1-->] oligosaccharides. Rhamnoarabinosyl and rhamnoarabinoarabinosyl side chains are reported for the first time as structural features of plant arabinogalactan-proteins.  相似文献

The knowledge of population structure is important to determine the degree of linkage disequilibrium, which allows the selection of genotypes for association mapping. Using 47 SSR markers, the genetic variability and population structure of 68 accessions of C. arabica (wild and cultivated) and of three diploid species used as reference were evaluated. The analysis was done with the distance method and the structure model. The structure analysis inferred nine subpopulations (k = 9), for which the greatest values of probability were obtained. Three of the groups corresponded to the three diploid species as expected. There were six groups identified within C. arabica. The genetic subdivisions within C. arabica were based on geographical origin, degree of domestication, and dispersal history of coffee. One group consisted entirely of cultivated genotypes, where intense population bottleneck were associated with a founder effect. This was the most homogeneous group, as demonstrated by the reduced distance between cultivars in the dendrogram. Three of the cultivated genotypes, originating from Sudan, were separated into an independent group, presumably due to selective adaptation to a different set of environmental conditions. Another group consisted of genotypes of the type “ennarea” that were grown and cultivated in isolation on the shores of the Tana lake. The semi-wild genotypes clustered into three different groups. This type of analysis provides a strong evidence of population structure in C. arabica. Based on these findings, it is possible to better identify a balanced sample of diverse plants in germplasm.  相似文献
