Palms can grow at sites exposed to high winds experiencing large dynamic wind and gust loads. Their stems represent a system of stiff fibrous elements embedded in the soft parenchymatous tissue. The proper design of the interface of the stiffening elements and the parenchyma is crucial for the functioning of the stem. The strategy of the palm to compromise between stiff fibre caps and the soft parenchymatous tissue may serve as a model system for avoiding stress discontinuities in inhomogeneous and anisotropic fibre-reinforced composite materials. We investigated the mechanical, structural and biochemical properties of the fibre caps of the palm Washingtonia robusta at different levels of hierarchy with high spatial resolution. A gradual decrease in stiffness across the fibre cap towards the surrounding parenchymatous tissue was observed. Structural adaptations at the tissue level were found in terms of changes in cell cross sections and cell wall thickness. At the cell wall level, gradients across the fibre cap were found in the degree of orientation of the microfibrils and in the lignin level and composition. The impact of these structural variations in the local material stiffness distribution is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Occurrence of somatic embryogenesis in in vitro cultures of Calamus merrillii and Calamus subinermis, two major largecaned rattan species, was scientifically demonstrated for the first time. Tissue responsiveness varied markedly according to the species and the type of primary explants used when initiated on 10.4–31.2 μM picloram-enriched Murashige and Skoog callus induction media. In C. merrillii, within 6 wk after inoculation, 84% of the leaf and 90% of the zygotic embryo explants produced friable embryogenic calluses, by contrast with those formed by 74% of the root explants. In C. subinermis, callogenesis was observed only 6 mo. after inoculation in 68% of root and 48% of zygotic explants. Leaf explants did not respond at all. Only root-derived calluses developed into nodular embryogenic structures. Irrespective of these initial differences, the further steps of the somatic embryogenesis developmental pattern was similar for both species. Histological analyses established that callus formation took place in the perivascular zones, and could give rise to embryogenic isolated cells from which the proembryos were derived. Reducing the picloram concentration stimulated the maturation process resulting ultimately in the germination of somatic embryos that exhibited bipolar development, despite an apparent lack of starch and protein reserves. The somatic embryo-derived plantlets of C. merrillii, overall more prone to somatic embryogenesis than C. subinermis in the given conditions, were successfully acclimatized to outdoor conditions.  相似文献

Madagascar's palm flora is very diverse (171 species) and has a high degree of endemism (97%). Palm products make an important contribution to the household economy of many rural families, especially in the palm-rich eastern escarpments. Many palms are, however, threatened by overexploitation and habitat destruction. We investigated which palm species were found and used in three villages on the eastern escarpments of Madagascar. The importance local people accorded to each species was compared to the number of its uses, number of people using it, and other aspects of its use. From this comparison it was concluded that even if important palms are used for more purposes than less important palms, they owe their importance to one or two of their main uses. We also investigated if there were any patterns in the distribution of informants' knowledge and whether such patterns could be related to socio-economic factors. There was a positive relationship between knowledge about palms and personal wealth and a negative relationship between distance to the forest and amount of knowledge. The latter can be a sign of an ongoing knowledge erosion. Sustainable use of native palms should be encouraged as it may contribute positively to village economy and knowledge preservation, and may provide incentives for preservation of remaining forest tracts.  相似文献

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive movement disorder caused by the selective and massive loss of dopaminergic neurons (DA) in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). DJ-1 loss-of-function mutations are involved in inherited early-onset PD forms and result in dysfunction of the oxidative stress response. In mice models, DJ-1 loss provokes sensitivity to oxidative insults but does not produce neurodegeneration. Similar results have been found when analyzing Drosophila mutants for the DJ-1 orthologous genes, DJ-1 and DJ-1β. Here, we report the analysis of two new mutations for the Drosophila DJ-1 genes. Both ubiquitous induction of DJ-1 knockdown by RNAi and loss of function of DJ-1β caused by an insertional mutation result in increased sensitivity to paraquat insults, reduced lifespan and motor impairments. However these mutations do not lead to DA neuron loss. Besides, we find that targeted inhibition of DJ-1 function in DA neuron results in certain DA neurodegeneration. Our results, together with findings in other Drosophila DJ-1 mutants, indicate that both Drosophila DJ-1 genes are implicated in the protection against the chemical induced oxidative stress response, but also in fly survival. The differences observed in DA neurodegeneration suggest that the motor impairments exhibited by the mutants could be caused by different pathways.  相似文献

Serenoa repens (Bartr.) Small is a palm native to the southeastern USA. It is a common understory plant in pine communities on both acid sands and alkaline limestone. Roots have only primary growth and range in thickness from 8.0 mm (first order roots from the stem) to 0.8–2.9 mm (ultimate roots of third to fifth order). The thickest roots occur at soil depths >20 cm; fine roots (<1.2 mm) occur at all depths (1–60 cm). Some second and third order roots are negatively geotropic and grow up to the mineral soil surface. The epidermis of all roots has a thick, eventually lignified outer wall. Except for the thinnest, all roots have a single-layered, thick-walled exodermis, which is first suberized and later lignified. Root hairs are never present. A hypodermis composed of several layers of lignified cells (up to 8-cells-thick) is next to the exodermis and forms the outer cortex. Radial series of thin walled and slightly lignified cells sporadically occur in the outer cortex of the thinnest roots, but there are no passage cells in the exodermis, which is continuous. The remaining inner cortex is composed of unlignified parenchyma with air canals and a completely lignosuberized endodermis in old roots. Passage cells were seen the the endodermis of the some of the thinnest roots. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi occur in the outer one-third of the cortical parenchyma adjacent to the hypodermis. Fungal coils, arbuscules and vesicles are found most frequently in the thinnest roots, but also occur sporadically in all root orders. Cells a few mm from the apical meristem are sometimes colonized. At sites of appressoria, coils of AM hyphae occur within an epidermal cell and exodermal and hypodermal cells beneath. Intercellular hyphae with intracellular branch arbuscules (Arum-type) are common in the inner cortex. There is evidence of a dieback of the highest order roots during the winter dry season. Profiles of soil and roots have the highest density of AM spores in the surface 10 cm layer. Total AM spore density ranged from 130 to 1100 spores per 50 g soil in different samples. Glomus spp. dominated followed by Gigaspora spp. The findings are related to a more general understanding of growth and AM colonization in long-lived roots of tropical woody monocotyledons. The microfungi of three palm species were investigated in their natural habitats and in habitats where the palms were cultivated outside their natural ranges. The palms that were selected differed in their habitats and ecology. Archontophoenix alexandrae is endemic to tropical rainforests in Australia, Cocos nucifera is pan‐tropical and Trachycarpus fortunei occurs in warm‐temperate China. Different assemblages of fungi were found in association with palms in temperate regions as compared to those in tropical regions. These differences were more related to climatic influences than to the hosts sampled, as few fungi were host‐species specific. The status of the hosts at the site, i.e. indigenous or introduced, and the degree of disturbance of the habitats within which the palms grew were also influential. When sampled in its natural habitat, Archontophoenix alexandrae had a distinct palmicolous mycota typical of other palms in tropical rainforests. Outside of the palm’s natural habitat, a widely different mycota were recorded that comprised tropical species of a more plurivorous nature. A similar plurivorous assemblage characterized the fungi associated with Cocos nucifera, probably due to the palm’s long history of cultivation. Similarly, plurivorous, but temperate or widespread fungi were associated with Trachycarpus fortunei, both within and outside of its natural habitat. This palm is also highly cultivated. A reduction in palm fungi associated with palms in disturbed habitats has implications for conservation of these fungi. However, it is acknowledged that the data for fungal diversity and distribution is incomplete and fragmentary.  相似文献

城市垂直绿化常用的攀缘植物爬山虎、美国爬山虎、紫藤、常春藤、洋常春藤的净光合速率、呼吸速率、光能利用率及光补偿点等指标进行了测定和分析.结果表明,5种攀缘植物的净光合速率日变化显示出“双峰”。第一峰值出现在10:00~12:00,第二峰值出现在14:00~16:00,“午休”现象明显;呼吸速率的日变化也表现出“双峰”,第一峰值出现在11:00~13:00,第二峰值出现在14:00~17:00;常春藤、洋常春藤、爬山虎、美国爬山虎及紫藤的光补偿点分别为5.73、5.07、9.96、6.40和18.93μmol·m^-2·s^-1;紫藤在强光下的光能利用率较高,其次为美国爬山虎,而在弱光下洋常春藤光能利用率较高,可以认为,紫藤为典型的阳性植物,爬山虎、美国爬山虎为中性植物,常春藤、洋常春藤为阴性植物。  相似文献

 采用实验生态学的方法,在提供不同直径支持物的情况下,对攀援植物苦瓜(Momordica charantia)不同构件层次的形态可塑性反应、生物量积累和生物量配置的变化进行了研究。结果表明:1)支持物直径对植株分枝出现的时机无明显影响,但分枝数量和分枝在主茎上的着生位置受支持物直径影响较大;2)植株个体水平比分枝水平对支持物直径的变化有更灵敏的反应,当支持物直径较大时,植株个体表现出对支持物较强的寻觅能力:主茎伸长受阻,比茎长变大,分枝数量和分枝率增大,分枝长度增加,比叶柄长度增加,根冠比减小;3)分枝形态特征和生物量特征对支持物直径的变化均无显著反应;4)苦瓜植株个体水平上的形态特征变化、生物量配置格局的改变以及分枝行为的变化是植株对支持物有效性变化的响应,有利于增强植株“寻觅”支持物的能力。  相似文献

研究了华南地区有较好开发利用前景的8种城市绿化攀缘植物禾雀花(Mucuna birdwoodianauna)、炮仗花(Pyrostegia venusta)、鸡蛋果(Passiflora edulis)、使君子(Quisqualis indica)、蒜香藤(Pseudocalymma alliaceum)、小花青藤(Illigera paviflora)、龙吐珠(Clerodendron thomsonae)和砾叶粉藤(Cissus rhombifolia)盆栽植株叶片的光合速率-光强响应曲线,叶片部分形态特征和水分关系参数。结果表明,8种植物的Pmax(最大光合速率)、LSP(光合作用光饱和光强)、LCP(光合作用光补偿点)均较低,但在光合有效辐射(PAR)强度达1700μmolm-2s-1下未出现光抑制现象,显示其光合机构具有应对低光及高光强的可塑性。光强的提高会改变ILUE(瞬时光能利用效率)、Gs(气孔导度)、Tr(蒸腾速率)和Ci(细胞间隙CO2浓度)值,高光强下(PAR>500μmolm-2s-1)的Pn(净光合速率)与Gs呈正相关。低Gs和Ci是强光下限制Pn的主要因子。LT(叶片厚度)与水分关系参数(RWC相对含水量,IWUE瞬时水分利用效率,AWLR平均失水速率和RR复水率)之间没有明显的相关性。不同植物的Pmax,ILUE,LA,LT,IWUE和光合色素(Chl叶绿素,Car类胡萝卜素)含量等皆有显著的差别。禾雀花、炮仗花和鸡蛋果的光合作用和水分关系特性优于其余种类,而蒜香藤和小花青藤的这些参数的水平最低。  相似文献

Climbing is an increasingly popular recreational and competitive behavior, engaged in a variety of environments and styles. However, injury rates are high in climbing populations, especially in the upper extremity and shoulder. Despite likely arising from an arboreal, climbing ancestor and being closely related to primates that are highly proficient climbers, the modern human shoulder has devolved a capacity for climbing. Limited biomechanical research exists on manual climbing performance. This study assessed kinematic and muscular demands during a bimanual climbing task that mimicked previous work on climbing primates. Thirty participants were recruited – 15 experienced and 15 inexperienced climbers. Motion capture and electromyography (EMG) measured elbow, thoracohumeral and trunk angles, and activity of twelve shoulder muscles, respectively, of the right-side while participants traversed across a horizontal climbing apparatus. Statistical parametric mapping was used to detect differences between groups in kinematics and muscle activity. Experienced climbers presented different joint motions that more closely mimicked the kinematics of climbing primates, including more elbow flexion (p = 0.0045) and internal rotation (p = 0.021), and less thoracohumeral elevation (p = 0.046). Similarly, like climbing primates, experienced climbers generally activated the shoulder musculature at a lower percentage of maximum, particularly during the exchange from support to swing and swing to support phase. However, high muscle activity was recorded in all muscles in both participant groups. Climbing experience coincided with a positive training effect, but not enough to overcome the high muscular workload of bimanual climbing. Owing to the evolved primary usage of the upper extremity for low-force, below shoulder-height tasks, bimanual climbing may induce high risk of fatigue-related musculoskeletal disorders.  相似文献
