Aim Do species range shapes follow general patterns? If so, what mechanisms underlie those patterns? We show for 11,582 species from a variety of taxa across the world that most species have similar latitudinal and longitudinal ranges. We then seek to disentangle the roles of climate, extrinsic dispersal limitation (e.g. barriers) and intrinsic dispersal limitation (reflecting a species’ ability to disperse) as constraints of species range shape. We also assess the relationship between range size and shape. Location Global. Methods Range shape patterns were measured as the slope of the regression of latitudinal species ranges against longitudinal ranges for each taxon and continent, and as the coefficient of determination measuring the degree of scattering of species ranges from the 1:1 line (i.e. latitudinal range = longitudinal range). Two major competing hypotheses explaining species distributions (i.e. dispersal or climatic determinism) were explored. To this end, we compared the observed slopes and coefficients of determination with those predicted by a climatic null model that estimates the potential range shapes in the absence of dispersal limitation. The predictions compared were that species distribution shapes are determined purely by (1) intrinsic dispersal limitation, (2) extrinsic dispersal limitations such as topographic barriers, and (3) climate. Results Using this methodology, we show for a wide variety of taxa across the globe that species generally have very similar latitudinal and longitudinal ranges. However, neither neutral models assuming random but spatially constrained dispersal, nor models assuming climatic control of species distributions describe range shapes adequately. The empirical relationship between the latitudinal and longitudinal ranges of species falls between the predictions of these competing models. Main conclusions We propose that this pattern arises from the combined effect of macroclimate and intrinsic dispersal limitation, the latter being the major determinant among restricted‐range species. Hence, accurately projecting the impact of climate change onto species ranges will require a solid understanding of how climate and dispersal jointly control species ranges. 相似文献

Compounds from wild edible mushrooms has been reported to exert biological activities and contribute to the different flavors of mushrooms in our diet. Wild edible Boletus mushrooms are popular in Southwest China. In this study, we performed ultra-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-MS/MS) based on widely targeted metabolomics analysis to identify key components. A total of 194 metabolites (113 upregulated, 81 downregulated) divided into 11 groups (49 metabolites in group lipids, 34 in amino acids and derivatives, 30 in organic acids, 18 in phenolic acids, 16 in nucleotides and derivatives, 13 in alkaloids, 6 in flavonoids, 3 in lignans and coumarins, 3 in tannins, 2 in terpenoids, and 20 in others) were found among Boletus bainiugan compared with B. subsplendidus. Through clustering analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), and orthogonal signal correction and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), different metabolites from fruiting bodies were clearly identified. Significant differences were observed in the metabolites between Boletus bainiugan and B. subsplendidus. These metabolites are involved in important biological functions. Our results provide new insights into important metabolites and theoretical basis for the taste difference of two wild edible Boletus mushrooms. 相似文献

Nanodisks (ND) are nanometer scale complexes of phospholipid and apolipoprotein that have been shown to function as drug delivery vehicles. ND harboring significant quantities of the antifungal agent, amphotericin B, or the bioactive isoprenoid, all trans retinoic acid, have been generated and characterized. As currently formulated, ND possess limited targeting capability. In this study, we constructed a single chain variable antibody (scFv)·apolipoprotein chimera and assessed the ability of this fusion protein to form ND and recognize the antigen to which the scFv is directed. Data obtained revealed that α-vimentin scFv·apolipoprotein A-I is functional in ND formation and antigen recognition, opening the door to the use of such chimeras in targeting drug-enriched ND to specific tissues. 相似文献

An abundant supply of cavity-bearing trees is important for maintaining wildlife communities in harvested forests. During harvesting, suitable trees and cavities are directly removed, and the longevity of cavities in retained trees may be reduced by increased exposure to wind and other disturbance factors. We examined patterns of cavity survival in retained trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) trees in harvested stands compared with those in unharvested mature stands by monitoring the persistence of individual cavities. We followed 930 cavities in 3 harvest treatments for up to 17 years in pre-cut and uncut forest, and up to 13 years post-harvest (reserve patches and dispersed retention), in temperate-mixed forests of interior British Columbia, Canada. Average annual cavity loss rates were 5.6% in pre-cut and uncut forest, 7.2% for cavities in trees retained in reserves, and 8.1% for cavities in retained trees dispersed throughout cuts. Correspondingly, median cavity longevity was 15 years for cavities in pre-cut and uncut forest, 10 years for cavities retained in reserves, and 9 years for those in dispersed retention. Risk of loss increased most for cavities in living trees (factor of 2.17), but we found no detectable difference for cavities in recently dead trees and trees with advanced decay. We suggest retention of a range of aspen size and decay classes to allow for future cavity-tree recruitment in harvested stands. Inclusion of wildlife reserves as part of an overall forest management plan will also help to mitigate the effects of windthrow and maintain long-lived cavity resources required by a large portion of forest wildlife. © 2013 The Wildlife Society 相似文献

Mendelian randomization methods, which use genetic variants as instrumental variables for exposures of interest to overcome problems of confounding and reverse causality, are becoming widespread for assessing causal relationships in epidemiological studies. The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how results can be biased if researchers select genetic variants on the basis of their association with the exposure in their own dataset, as often happens in candidate gene analyses. This can lead to estimates that indicate apparent “causal” relationships, despite there being no true effect of the exposure. In addition, we discuss the potential bias in estimates of magnitudes of effect from Mendelian randomization analyses when the measured exposure is a poor proxy for the true underlying exposure. Bioclimate envelope models are often used to predict changes in species distribution arising from changes in climate. These models are typically based on observed correlations between current species distribution and climate data. One limitation of this basic approach is that the relationship modelled is assumed to be constant in space; the analysis is global with the relationship assumed to be spatially stationary. Here, it is shown that by using a local regression analysis, which allows the relationship under study to vary in space, rather than conventional global regression analysis it is possible to increase the accuracy of bioclimate envelope modelling. This is demonstrated for the distribution of Spotted Meddick in Great Britain using data relating to three time periods, including predictions for the 2080s based on two climate change scenarios. Species distribution and climate data were available for two of the time periods studied and this allowed comparison of bioclimate envelope model outputs derived using the local and global regression analyses. For both time periods, the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve derived from the analysis based on local statistics was significantly higher than that from the conventional global analysis; the curve comparisons were also undertaken with an approach that recognised the dependent nature of the data sets compared. Marked differences in the future distribution of the species predicted from the local and global based analyses were evident and highlight a need for further consideration of local issues in modelling ecological variables. 相似文献
