Lilioceris cheni is a successful biological control agent on the invasive yam, Dioscorea bulbifera in many areas in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana. Two biotypes are available for release and come from significantly different centres of origin. The Nepalese biotype was collected at higher altitude and latitude sites, whereas the Chinese biotype was collected at slightly lower latitude and lower altitude. We hypothesised that Nepalese beetles would survive winter better in north Florida and that Chinese beetles would overwinter better in subtropical south Florida. We established sites in Homestead, Fort Pierce, Gainesville and Tallahassee, Florida to gauge the overwintering survival of each biotype. Beetles that overwintered in each site for one to three seasons were collected and followed to assess their reproductive capacity. In the final year of the experiment, we extracted fat bodies to determine effects of biotype and site. Nepalese beetles overwintered significantly better overall. Beetles survived better in the first study year (2013–2014). Both biotypes reproduced very well after surviving winter and beetles in Fort Pierce survived better than beetles in other regions and maintained a higher fat body. Nepalese beetles may have a wider ecological envelope – a decided advantage for a large region such as peninsular Florida. We suggest that current release programmes incorporate Nepalese beetles into their protocol to increase overwinter survival and establishment.  相似文献

Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are eusocial insects and well known for their complex division of labor and associative learning capability1, 2. The worker bees spend the first half of their life inside the dark hive, where they are nursing the larvae or building the regular hexagonal combs for food (e.g. pollen or nectar) and brood3. The antennae are extraordinary multisensory feelers and play a pivotal role in various tactile mediated tasks4, including hive building5 and pattern recognition6. Later in life, each single bee leaves the hive to forage for food. Then a bee has to learn to discriminate profitable food sources, memorize their location, and communicate it to its nest mates7. Bees use different floral signals like colors or odors7, 8, but also tactile cues from the petal surface9 to form multisensory memories of the food source. Under laboratory conditions, bees can be trained in an appetitive learning paradigm to discriminate tactile object features, such as edges or grooves with their antennae10, 11, 12, 13. This learning paradigm is closely related to the classical olfactory conditioning of the proboscis extension response (PER) in harnessed bees14. The advantage of the tactile learning paradigm in the laboratory is the possibility of combining behavioral experiments on learning with various physiological measurements, including the analysis of the antennal movement pattern.  相似文献

Tenderness is considered as the most important quality determinant of meat. Calcium chloride application has been shown to improve tenderness by regulating endogenous proteinases. This study was designed to determine the effect of 300 mM calcium chloride injection on myofibrillar structures, caspase activities and shear force in longissimus muscles of bulls during postmortem storage of 7 days. Myofibrillar fragmentation index was determined as an index of proteolysis occurring in muscle fibers and associated proteins. Maximum tenderness was observed at days 4 and 7 in both treated and control samples. The injection of calcium chloride significantly increased myofibrillar proteolysis and improved tenderness at postmortem days 4 and 7. The treatment reduced caspase-9 activity at 4 h and day 4, whereas those of caspase-8 and -3 activities at days 1 and 4 with respect to control. The improved tenderness and increased myofibril fragmentation with decreased caspase activities suggested that the proteolytic systems activated with calcium chloride injection possibly behave independent of the caspase system.  相似文献

Pavlovian fear or threat conditioning, where a neutral stimulus takes on aversive properties through pairing with an aversive stimulus, has been an important tool for exploring the neurobiology of learning. In the past decades, this neurobehavioral approach has been expanded to include the developing infant. Indeed, protracted postnatal brain development permits the exploration of how incorporating the amygdala, prefrontal cortex and hippocampus into this learning system impacts the acquisition and expression of aversive conditioning. Here, we review the developmental trajectory of these key brain areas involved in aversive conditioning and relate it to pups' transition to independence through weaning. Overall, the data suggests that adult‐like features of threat learning emerge as the relevant brain areas become incorporated into this learning. Specifically, the developmental emergence of the amygdala permits cue learning and the emergence of the hippocampus permits context learning. We also describe unique features of learning in early life that block threat learning and enhance interaction with the mother or exploration of the environment. Finally, we describe the development of a sense of time within this learning and its involvement in creating associations. Together these data suggest that the development of threat learning is a useful tool for dissecting adult‐like functioning of brain circuits, as well as providing unique insights into ecologically relevant developmental changes.  相似文献

We model the vague-to-crisp dynamics of forming percepts in the brain by combining two methodologies: dynamic logic (DL) and operant learning process. Forming percepts upon the presentation of visual inputs is likened to model selection based on sampled evidence. Our framework utilizes the DL in selecting the correct “percept” among competing ones, but uses an intrinsic reward mechanism to allow stochastic online update in lieu of performing the optimization step of the DL framework. We discuss the connection of our framework with cognitive processing and the intentional neurodynamic cycle.  相似文献

There are three basic paradigms of classical conditioning: delay, trace and context conditioning where presentation of a conditioned stimulus (CS) or a context typically predicts an unconditioned stimulus (US). In delay conditioning CS and US normally coterminate, whereas in trace conditioning an interval of time exists between CS termination and US onset. The modeling of trace conditioning is a rather difficult computational problem and is a challenge to the behavior and connectionist approaches mainly due to a time gap between CS and US. To account for trace conditioning, Pavlov (Conditioned reflexes: an investigation of the physiological activity of the cerebral cortex, Oxford University Press, London, 1927) postulated the existence of a stimulus “trace” in the nervous system. Meanwhile, there exist many other options for solving this association problem. There are several excellent reviews of computational models of classical conditioning but none has thus far been devoted to trace conditioning. Eight representative models of trace conditioning aimed at building a prospective model are being reviewed below in a brief form. As a result, one of them, comprising the most important features of its predecessors, can be suggested as a real candidate for a unified model of trace conditioning.  相似文献
