The chromosomal aberration test using a Chinese hamster lung cell line (CHL) was carried out on ptaquiloside and its related compounds, hypoloside B, hypoloside C, illudin M and illudin S. Ptaquiloside induced chromosomal aberrations at doses as low as 4.5 μg/ml (0.0113 mM). The clastogenic effect was ph-dependent. The same activity was observed at a 90-fold higher dose at pH 5.3 in the culture medium compared with the activity at pH 74. or pH 8.0. Both hypoloside B and hypoloside C were also clastogenic at almost the same dose levels as that of ptaquiloside. Illudin M and illudin S were also potet clastogens and induced aberrations at much lower doses than ptaquiloside. These results suggest that the clastogenic effect is involved in the mechanism of carcinogenic potency of ptaquiloside in animals.  相似文献

Summary Heterochromatin differentiation, including band size, sites, and Giemsa staining intensity, was analyzed by the HKG (HCl-KOH-Giemsa) banding technique in the A genomes of 21 diploid (Triticum urartu, T. boeoticum and T. monococcum), 13 tetraploid (T. araraticum, T. timopheevi, T. dicoccoides and T. turgidum var. Dicoccon, Polonicum), and 7 cultivars of hexaploid (T. aestivum) wheats from different germplasm collections. Among wild and cultivated diploid taxa, heterochromatin was located mainly at centromeric regions, but the size and staining intensity were distinct and some accessions' genomes had interstitial and telomeric bands. Among wild and cultivated polyploid wheats, heterochromatin exhibited bifurcated differentiation. Heterochromatinization occurred in chromosomes 4At and 7At and in smaller amounts in 2At, 3At, 5At, and 6At within the genomes of the tetraploid Timopheevi group (T. araraticum, and T. timopheevi) and vice versa within those of the Emmer group (T. dicoccoides and T. turgidum). Similar divergence patterns occurred among chromosome 4Aa and 7Aa of cultivars of hexaploid wheat (T. aestivum). These dynamic processes could be related to geographic distribution and to natural and artifical selection. Comparison of the A genomes of diploid wheats with those of polyploid wheats shows that the A genomes in existing diploid wheats could not be the direct donors of those in polyploid wheats, but that the extant taxa of diploids and polyploids probably have a common origin and share a common A-genomelike ancestor.Contribution of the College of Agricultural Sciences, Texas Tech Univ. Expression of C4-like photosynthesis in several species of Flaveria   总被引:4,自引:2,他引:2  
Abstract Photosynthetic metabolism was investigated in leaves of five species of Flaveria (Asteraceac), all previously considered to be C4 plants. Leaves were exposed to 14CO2 for different intervals up to 16s. Extrapolation of 14C-product curves to zero time indicated that only F. trinervia and F.bidentis assimilated atmospheric CO2 exclusively through phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase. The proportion of direct fixation of 14CO2 by ribulose-I, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) ranged from 5 to 10% in leaves of F. australasica. F. palmeri and F. vaginata. Protoplasts of leaf mesophyll and bundle sheath cells were utilized to examine the intercellular compartmentation of principal photosynthetic enzymes. Leaves of F. australasica, F. palmeri and F. vaginata contained 5 to 7% of the leaf's Rubisco activity in the mesophyll cells, while leaves of F. trinervia and F. bidentis contained at most 0.2 to 0.8% of such activity in their mesophyll cells. Thus, F. trinervia and F. bidentis have the complete C4 syndrome, while F. australasica, F. palmeri and F. vaginata are less advanced, C4-like species.  相似文献

In vivo effect of abscisic acid (ABA) on photosynthetic oxygen evolution was investigated in barley chloroplasts. The most important kinetic parameters of O2-producing reactions were changed. The results show inhibition of the O2-flash yields at ABA concentrations of 10 mol/l and 100 mol/l and an increase in the degree of damping of the oscillations. ABA has a marked effect on the distribution of the oxygenevolving centers in S0 and S1 states and on sum of the centers (S0+S1) estimated according to the Kok model. In addition, the amplitude and the shape of the initial oxygen burst under continuous illumination are also significantly altered. At a concentration of 100 mol/l, ABA strongly inhibits Hill reaction activity measured by DCPIP reduction. The results cannot be explained by the hypothesis of socalled stomata effect. On the other hand, no effects were observed on the investigated parameters in experiments involving ABA applied in vitro to isolated chloroplasts. Manganese in the oxygen-evolving complex is a physiological electron donor to Photosystem II. PS II depleted of manganese may oxidize exogenous reductants including benzidine and Mn2+. Using flash photolysis with electron spin resonance detection, we examined the room-temperature reaction kinetics of these reductants with Yz +, the tyrosine radical formed in PS II membranes under illumination. Kinetics were measured with membranes that did or did not contain the 33 kDa extrinsic polypeptide of PS II, whose presence had no effect on the reaction kinetics with either reductant. The rate of Yz + reduction by benzidine was a linear function of benzidine concentration. The rate of Yz + reduction by Mn2+ at pH 6 increased linearly at low Mn2+ concentrations and reached a maximum at the Mn2+ concentrations equal to several times the reaction center concentration. The rate was inhibited by K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+. These data are described by a model in which negative charge on the membrane causes a local increase in the cation concentration. Patterns of feeding ecology among the living macaques conform poorly with recognized phyletic distinctions within the genus because there is an important ecological division which cross-cuts phyletic groupings. This division, between weed species and non-weed species, is based on the differing abilities of macaques to tolerate and even prosper in close association with human settlements. Based on available information about their ecology in the wild, we tentatively assign macaque species to these two categories. Finally, we consider the implications of our argument for scenarios of the initial spread of the macaques.  相似文献

Alternative life-history styles of Japanese freshwater sculpins revisited   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Synopsis Japanese freshwater sculpins consist of 6Cottus and 1Trachidermus species, with various types of life-cycles, namely, catadromous, amphidromous, lacustrine land-locked and fluvial land-locked. Among them,C. amblystomopsis andC. nozawae have been regarded as sibling species. Because of very similar morphological and ecological adult characteristics they were formerly classified as a single species.C. amblystomopsis mainly inhabits the lower courses of rivers and produces many small eggs from which pelagic larvae are formed. In contrast,C. nozawae lives in the middle or upper courses of rivers and deposits few, large eggs, from which well-developed benthic young emerge, well on the way to the definitive phenotype as fully formed juveniles. These two species have distinctly different life-cycles: amphidromous forC. amblystomopsis and fluvial forC. nozawae. A comparison of the early ontogeny shows that, amongCottus species, the small-egg, amphidromousC. amblystomopsis is altricial, while the large-egg, fluvialC. nozawae is precocial. Assuming thatC. nozawae has been derived phylogenetically fromC. amblystomopsis or its ancestral relatives, it is reasonable to consider that the fluvial land-locked life-history style ofC. nozawae has evolved from the ancestral arnphidromous one through adapting to the upstream habitat by an increase in egg size and consequent truncation of the larval period.  相似文献

Analysis of several populations in a large part of the distribution area of the genusEmilia in Brazil has revealed only two species: the diploidE. sonchifolia and the tetraploidE. fosbergii. The more widely reportedE. coccinea was not found. They show a karyotype constancy in morphology and chromosome number (2n = 10 and 2n = 20, respectively), C-banding pattern and number of secondary constrictions. Some indications were found thatE. fosbergii may be an allopolyploid and that its ancestors had different genome sizes.  相似文献

Evidence concerning the geomorphological evolution of the Western Rift Valley, sedimentation within the valley and comparison of the fossil mammalian faunas of Western Uganda and East Africa indicate that the mountain ranges which now flank the Western Rift were uplifted in three or more stages beginning during the upper Miocene and that they reached climatically important altitudes during the upper Pliocene, at which time they began to modify regional climatic patterns in East Africa. Their main effect was the xerification of conditions over much of the region east of the mountains. The regional climatic effects due to the mountain ranges were themselves modified by global climatic changes related to the onset of the Glacial Period, the two phenomena combining to yield the Present day climatic regime of East Africa. As the climate changed, so did the flora and fauna. Faunal response was of three main kinds: a) dispersal into East Africa of pre-existing forms already adapted to more xeric conditions (many bovids, some cercopithecids), b) autochthonous evolution of forms adapted to mesic environments into forms adapted to more xeric conditions (suids, elephantids, some bovids, hominids), c) displacement of species ranges of those lineages unable to adapt to changing conditions (i.e. local extinctions) (Anancus, Brachypotherium). Autochthonous evolvers, including hominids, adopted two main strategies reflected in their hard anatomy: a) dietary shift (suids, proboscideans, bovids and later Pliocene hominids) and b) locomotor changes (early Pliocene hominids).  相似文献

Evolutionary biology is supposed to be relevant to ethics by a number of authors. Some of them believe that it may provide and justify basic moral values. Others argue that evolutionary biology is relevant only in a negative way. They assume that it reveals the illusory nature of any attempt to justify basic moral values. In this paper one example of either approach is criticized. An analysis of examples can hardly offer sufficient grounds for a general conclusion. Nevertheless I believe that evolutionary theory is of little help when we deal with the most basic ethical questions. Three themes which are often though to provide a link between evolutionary biology and (meta)ethics — altruism, sociality and human nature — do not in fact establish that link.  相似文献
