Abstract Variability in spatial and temporal patterning of flowering by populations of rainforest trees fed upon by honeyeaters and flower-visiting parrots was studied for 2 years in lowland tropical hill forest in Papua New Guinea. All 2200 trees in a 3 ha plot were tagged, identified, mapped and monitored monthly. Of 274 tree species present, 86 flowered during the course of the study; during any given month, approximately 20% of the species flowering that month were visited by nectarivorous birds. Results showed that overall flower resources (total number of species, and number of bird-pollinated species, individuals and flowers) fluctuated during the year, decreased during the dry season and increased during the wet season. In addition, there was a wide range of temporal variation within and among tree species in length and timing of flowering period, percentage of each conspecific population flowering from year to year, and degree of synchrony among flowering conspecifics. Spatial dispersion of tree populations also varied, from clumps to scattered single individuals. Resident bird species were correlated with synchronously flowering trees, whereas nomadic bird species were correlated with asynchronously flowering trees. Resident birds were also associated with smaller blooming displays per tree, whereas nomadic birds were associated with trees that bloomed massively. There was no correlation between avian nomadism and spatial dispersion of tree populations. Thus nomadic birds seem to range in search of rich but unpredictable resources; resident birds may rely more on predictable, but smaller resources.  相似文献

Abstract. We propose a mechanistic model to relate α- and γ-diversity to area per se, moisture status and environmental variation (local and total), and explored the effects these abiotic variables have on species richness per unit area (α-diversity) for plant communities in a network of wetland habitats located in a Mediterranean mountainous region of central Spain. In this study, environmental status is measured as actual evapotranspiration (as an expression of energy), slope and soil wetness, and environmental variation refers to slope variation and soil wetness variation. Species richness per unit area was related to soil wetness, soil wetness variation, ground slope and ground slope variation. There were also positive correlations among moisture status and environmental variation variables. There is a joint effect of slope and soil wetness variation in explaining species richness per unit area of these wetland habitats, but area effects and energy are relatively unimportant. We conclude that species richness per unit area of wetland vegetation can be explained by moisture status and local environmental variation, and that habitat area may not have an important effect. Area could affect γ-diversity directly through random sampling and/or indirectly through increasing β-diversity, and energy may be important in areas with larger energy ranges. Complete surveys of environmental status, local and total environmental variation, and their associated species assemblages are needed to explain the processes that give rise to the rule that larger areas have larger species richness.  相似文献

In the Sierra Nevada, distributions of forest tree species are largely controlled by the soil-moisture balance. Changes in temperature or precipitation as a result of increased greenhouse gas concentrations could lead to changes in species distributions. In addition, climatic change could increase the frequency and severity of wildfires. We used a forest gap model developed for Sierra Nevada forests to investigate the potential sensitivity of these forests to climatic change, including a changing fire regime. Fuel moisture influences the fire regime and couples fire to climate. Fires are also affected by fuel loads, which accumulate according to forest structure and composition. These model features were used to investigate the complex interactions between climate, fire, and forest dynamics. Eight hypothetical climate-change scenarios were simulated, including two general circulation model (GCM) predictions of a 2 × CO2 world. The response of forest structure, species composition, and the fire regime to these changes in the climate were examined at four sites across an elevation gradient. Impacts on woody biomass and species composition as a result of climatic change were site specific and depended on the environmental constraints of a site and the environmental tolerances of the tree species simulated. Climatic change altered the fire regime both directly and indirectly. Fire frequency responded directly to climate's influence on fuel moisture, whereas fire extent was affected by changes that occurred in either woody biomass or species composition. The influence of species composition on fuel-bed bulk density was particularly important. Future fires in the Sierra Nevada could be both more frequent and of greater spatial extent if GCM predictions prove true. Received 5 May 1998; accepted 4 November 1998.  相似文献

Changes in the two-dimensional SDS-electrophoretic patterns of extracts of maturing denuded oocytes of the medaka ( Oryzias latipes ) were surveyed. In oocytes without follicular constituents several proteins became detectable in the area between the acidic and slightly basic proteins on the two-dimensional electrophoretograms, while a few of the protein spots disappeared during the process of oocyte maturation. The former proteins were detected also in oocytes that were induced to mature in vivo without breakdown of the germinal vesicle. Several proteins newly observed in extracts of post-vitellogenic oocytes during maturation after breakdown of the germinal vesicle were also identified by two-dimensional electrophoresis. Of several proteins that exhibited noticeable changes in maturing oocytes, only one spot incorporated 14C-labeled amino acid during maturation, suggesting that post-translational modification of many proteins occurred during oocyte maturation.  相似文献

The effect of the granule structure on the methylation of starch was investigated by comparing the substitution patterns of potato starch methylated in granular suspension and in solution to DS 0.3. Substitution patterns were analyzed by successive digestion with alpha-amylase and amyloglucosidase, fractionation of the resulting malto-oligosaccharide mixture by GPC on a preparative scale, and characterization of the fractions by GLC and MALDI-MS. The mass composition of fractions with intermediate and higher degree of polymerization was indicative of enhanced clustering of substituents in granular methyl starch. On the contrary, the composition of the smaller saccharides was governed by enzyme specificity, which was also reflected in strong deviations in their monomer composition. A sequencing study on selected 'pure' small saccharides confirmed and complemented previous conclusions on enzyme specificity.  相似文献

Aims: Large hurricanes have profound impacts on temperate forests, but owing to their infrequent nature these effects have rarelybeen examined in detail. In 1996, Hurricane Fran significantlydamaged many long-term tree census plots in the Duke Foreston the North Carolina Piedmont, thereby providing an exceptionalopportunity to examine pre- and post-hurricane forest compositionaltrajectories. Our goal was to examine immediate, short-term(0–4 years) and longer term (5 year) hurricane-inducedstructural, spatial and compositional changes in the tree population(stem d.b.h > 1 cm) in the context of our detailed, long-termknowledge of the dynamics of these forests. Methods: We surveyed stem damage and tree mortality in 34 long-term permanentplots (ca. 70-year record; 404–1 012 m2) and 7 large mappedtree stands (ca. 20-year record; 5 250–65 000 m2) representingboth transition-phase, even-aged pine stands and uneven-agedupland hardwood forests. We employed three types of damage measuresto quantify stand-level damage severity: percentage of stemsdamaged, percentage of basal area lost and a ‘stand-leveldamage index’. Second-order spatial analysis (Ripley'sK-function) was used to investigate patterns in tree mortality. Important findings: Our study found hurricane effects on the structural attributesof Piedmont forests to be variable and patchy. Changes in treespecies composition, however, were modest. Uprooting was themajor damage type for the overstory trees [diameter at breastheight (d.b.h.) >10 cm] apparently due to the exposure ofthe crowns to high wind combined with heavy rainfall prior toand during the storm. Saplings, juvenile trees and small trees(1–10 cm d.b.h.) of the understory and midstory were mainlydamaged by being pinned or bent by their damaged large neighbors.Hurricane-induced tree mortality varied weakly among species, was positively correlated with pre-hurricane tree size and remainedup to 2-fold higher than pre-hurricane background mortality5 years after the hurricane. Spatial point pattern analysisrevealed a patchy distribution of tree mortality during thehurricane sampling interval. Hurricane Fran resulted in a dramaticincrease in average gap size from ca. 400 m2 pre-hurricane toca 1100 m2 after the hurricane, whereas maximum gap sizes reached18–34 times larger than the pre-hurricane levels.  相似文献

The function of the ARF-GEF family has drawn great attention recently, especially GNOM and GNL1, owing to their important role in plant development. A homolog of GBF was identified in Nicotiana tabacum, named NtGNL1, which is ubiquitously expressed throughout the tobacco life cycle. In NtGNL1 RNAi plants, irregular orientation of cell division and asynchronous cell development during early embryogenesis disrupted the symmetry of the developing embryo. In addition, root growth in transgenic lines was significantly slower than that in wild-type plants, although the structure of the root tip was largely intact. Pollen germination and pollen tube growth were also inhibited in the transgenic lines, and the tip of the pollen tube presented various aberrant morphologies in one of the transgenic lines. The phenotypes of different NtGNL1 RNAi transgenic lines suggest that the NtGNL1 is likely to be involved not only in embryogenesis and postembryonic development, but also in sexual reproduction; thus, NtGNL1 may play multiple and critical roles in plant development.  相似文献
