Crossing experiments revealed that a diploid hybridogenetic fish (genus Poeciliopsis) from the Río Mocorito (Sinaloa, Mexico) is trihybrid. Its haploid maternal genome is inherited clonally (i.e., hemiclonally), and it expresses a mixture of morphological traits found in the closely related species P. monacha and P. viriosa. Its haploid paternal genome is replaced in each generation by mating with males of a more distantly related sexual species, P. lucida. However, expression of mixed (monacha X viriosa) traits by this hemiclone is also consistent with retention of shared ancestral polymorphisms. If true, this hemiclonal lineage would be one of the few examples of an ancient asexual taxon. We used mitochondrial DNA and allozymes to test whether the maternal progenitor of the Mocorito hybridogen was a recent P. monacha X P. viriosa hybrid or a remnant of their most recent common ancestor. Our results clearly link the hemiclonal genome to contemporary P. monacha and therefore support the hypothesis of a recent origin. Additionally, our findings suggest that this unisexual fish may serve as a vehicle for introgression between two allopatric sexual species.  相似文献

Allozyme data suggest that the Rhodes population of Mesobuthus gibbosus is a hybrid population of recent origin. Namely, it is a mixture between an autochthonous population and an artificially introduced population probably from the Greek mainland. All samples were mainly composed of F1 hybrid genotypes and genotypes either fixed for autochthonous or introduced alleles. Back-cross hybrid genotypes were very rare. Mitochondrial DNA analysis, in contrast, revealed only one group of closely related haplotypes that are unique for the Rhodes populations, thus suggesting asymmetric introgression of the two marker classes.  相似文献

Populations of the marble trout (Salmo marmoratus) have declined critically due to introgression by brown trout (Salmo trutta) strains. In order to define strategies for long-term conservation, we examined the genetic structure of the 8 known pure populations using 15 microsatellite loci. The analyses reveal extraordinarily strong genetic differentiation among populations separated by < 15 km, and extremely low levels of intrapopulation genetic variability. As natural recolonization seems highly unlikely, appropriate management and conservation strategies should comprise the reintroduction of pure populations from mixed stocks (translocation) to avoid further loss of genetic diversity.  相似文献

One of the major environmental concerns over genetically modified (GM) crops relates to transgene movement into wild relatives. The pattern of hybridization ultimately affects the scale and rapidity of ecological change and the feasibility of containment. A new procedure for quantifying hybrid formation over large areas is described. Remote sensing was used to identify possible sites of sympatry between Brassica napus and its progenitor species across 15 000 km2 of south-east England in 1998. Two sympatric populations with B. rapa and one with B. oleracea were found over the entire survey area. Every newly recruited plant in these populations in 1999 was screened for hybrid status using flow cytometry and molecular analyses. One hybrid was observed from the 505 plants screened in the B. rapa populations but none of the nine B. oleracea recruits were hybrids. Measures to minimize gene flow are suggested, and a procedure for the post-release evaluation and containment of GM cultivars is proposed.  相似文献

Genetic mapping methods provide a unique opportunity to study the interactions of differentiated genes and genomes in a hybrid genetic background. After a brief discussion of theoretical and analytical concerns, we review the application of these methods to a wide range of evolutionary issues. Map-based studies of experimental hybrids indicate that most postzygotic reproductive barriers in plants are polygenic and that the expression of extreme or novel traits in segregating hybrids (transgressive segregation) results from the complementary action of divergent parental alleles. However, genetic studies of hybrid vigor do not concur in their interpretations of the relative roles of dominance, overdominance, and epistasis. Map-based studies of natural hybrids are much rarer, but the few existing studies confirm the polygenic basis of postzygotic barriers and demonstrate the utility of genetic linkage for detecting cryptic introgression. In addition, studies of experimental and natural hybrid lineages provide compelling evidence that homoploid hybrid speciation has occurred in nature, and that it represents a rapid and repeatable mode of speciation. Data further indicate that this mode is facilitated by strong fertility selection and high chromosomal mutation rates. We recommend that future studies of hybrid genomes focus on natural hybrids, not only because of the paucity of data in this area, but also because of the availability of highly recombinant hybrid genotypes in hybrid zones. Of particular value will be studies of long-lived or difficult-to-propagate organisms, which previously have not been amenable to genetic study.  相似文献

Hybridization with abundant invaders is a well-known threat to rare native species. Our study addresses mechanisms of hybridization between a rare invader, smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) and the common native California cordgrass (S. foliosa) in the salt marshes of San Francisco Bay. These species are wind-pollinated and flower in summer. The invader produced 21-fold the viable pollen of the native, and 28% of invader pollen germinated on native stigmas (1.5-fold the rate of the native's own pollen). Invader pollen increased the seed set of native plants almost eightfold over that produced with native pollen, while native pollen failed to increase seed set of the invader. This pollen swamping and superior siring ability by the invader could lead to serial genetic assimilation of a very large native population. Unlike California cordgrass, smooth cordgrass can grow into low intertidal habitats and cover open mud necessary to foraging shorebirds, marine life, navigation, and flood control in channels. To the extent that intertidal range of the hybrids is more similar to the invader than to the native parent, introgression will lead to habitat loss for shore birds and marine life as well to genetic pollution of native California cordgrass.  相似文献

Theory predicts that homoploid hybrid speciation will be facilitated by selfing, yet most well-documented hybrid species are outcrossers. One possible explanation for this puzzle is that conditions in hybrid populations may favor selfing, even in otherwise outcrossing species. For example, in self-incompatible plants, mixtures of self and interspecific pollen often induce selfing. Here, we examine patterns of mating in three hybrid zones and four “pure” populations of Helianthus annuus and H. petiolaris, wild, self-incompatible sunflower species that are thought to have parented three homoploid hybrid species. Fourteen to 16 maternal families from each pure population and 44–46 maternal families from each hybrid zone were analyzed for seven polymorphic isozyme loci. Maximum-likelihood (ML) methods were used to estimate multilocus outcrossing rates (Tm) and hybridization frequencies for each maternal family, each phenotypic group within each hybrid zone (annuus-like, hybrid, and petiolaris-like), and each population. As predicted for self-incompatible species, all four parental populations have outcrossing rate ML estimates of 1.0. Within the hybrid zones, outcrossing rates were lowest in the H. annuus–like fraction of the population (0.73, 0.72, and 0.74 in the three hybrid zones, respectively), largely intermediate in the H. petiolaris–like group (0.94, 0.90, and 0.94), and highest in the hybrid group (0.97, 0.93, and 0.97). Although outcrossing rates are lower in hybrid zones than in pure populations, it is unlikely that the observed decrease facilitates hybrid speciation because outcrossing rates in the critical hybrid fraction of the population do not differ significantly from 1.0. Dividing the outcrossed pollen pool into intraspecific and interspecific components revealed that maternal plants are largely fertilized by conspecific pollen, confirming an important role for pollen competition as a reproductive barrier. Highly sterile hybrid plants do not appear to discriminate between parental species pollen, but hybrids with higher fertility tend to be fertilized by pollen from the parental group they resemble genetically. Thus, gametic selection leads to substantial assortative mating in these hybrid zones.  相似文献

This paper describes the occurrence of hybridization and introgression in two species of amphibians (the newts Triturus helveticus and Triturus vulgaris ) in mid-Wales, northern France and western France. A single aberrant adult male with intermediate phenotype was found. The multivariate analysis of 14 morphometric and two meristic characters supported its hybrid status. Electrophoretic analysis of 42 protein loci showed a genetic distance of 0.57 ± 0.14 Nei units between the species and revealed 15 diagnostic loci. The aberrant specimen was heterozygous at 11 of those and most likely to be a F1 hybrid. Four marker loci appeared homozygous, suggesting the presence of enzymatically non-active ('null') alleles. The analysis of (maternally inherited) mitochondrial DNA showed the hybrid to be the offspring of a T. helveticus mother (and a T. vulgaris father). This observation does not conform to expectations based on the species composition in the pond from which the hybrid was collected. No F1 hybrids were observed in a large sample (n > 5000) of larvae, recently metamorphosed newts and adults using two diagnostic protein loci. Occasionally alleles characteristic for one species were observed in the gene pool of the other species, suggesting the presence of bidirectional introgression. However, the frequency of alien genes was low (maximally 0.07%) which renders it difficult to rule out alternative explanations conclusively. The increase in total genetic variation in T. helveticus and T. vulgaris due to gene flow between them is negligible.  相似文献

Selected strains of ectomycorrhizal fungi, such as the basidiomycete Laccaria bicolor , are currently being used as inoculants in nurseries to improve growth of forest trees after outplanting. Information is needed on the survival of these introduced strains in forests and their impact on indigenous biodiversity. Dissemination and persistence of an American strain, L. bicolor S238N, were studied 10 years after outplanting in a Douglas fir plantation located at Saint-Brisson (Morvan, France). About 430 Laccaria spp. sporophores were collected over 3 years. Inheritance of nuclear ribosomal DNA, as well as RAPD markers, was characterized in L. bicolor S238N, using a haploid progeny set of 91 monokaryons. More than 50 markers were identified (19 heterozygous and 33 homozygous or cytoplasmic markers), which unambiguously confirmed that the introduced strain was still present in the inoculated plots. Neither selfing ( P < 0.0008) nor introgression with indigenous strains was detected although in vitro interfertility between the American strain and indigenous L. bicolor was identified. No ingress of the introduced genet into adjacent uninoculated plots colonized by various local Laccaria genets was detected. It is proposed that the spatial distributions identified have developed through mycelial propagation of the introduced strain and intraspecific competition with native genets. Although longer-term data is still lacking, the stability of the inoculant strain and the limited disturbance to indigenous populations described support large-scale nursery production of this host-fungal combination.  相似文献
