Summary On the antennae of Periplaneta americana, 25 chemo-, hygro- or thermosensitive sensilla were investigated electrophysiologically and, after marking, by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. A clear-cut relationship of functional types to structural types was observed. Two different stimulus conducting structures were observed: a) pore tubules which are found only in smooth, single-walled sensory pegs and b) secretion-filled canals which occur only in grooved double-walled sensilla. Temperature and humidity-sensitive receptors occur only in double-walled sensilla with secretion material as the stimulus conducting system. Olfactory sensory cells were found in both types, however, those with a specific sensitivity for short-chain n-alcohols are restricted to single-walled pegs with pore tubules, while those which are most sensitive to short-chain n-acids and amines are found in double-walled sensilla, sometimes together with thermosensitive units. The stimulus conducting systems may control the access of odorous substances to the dendritic membranes and thus contribute to the discriminatory properties of the sensilla.Supported by the Deutsehe Forschungsgemeinschaft (Al 56/6)  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Specificity and sensitivity of gustatory neurones in response to twenty-two amino acids were studied in larvae of Pieris brassicae L. and Pieris rapae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) using electrophysiological methods. Twelve amino acids stimulated a specific amino acid receptor cell in the lateral styloconic sensillum on the maxillary galea of both species, and a further two evoked single unit responses in the same sensillum of P.brassicae only. Histidine, phenylalanine and tryptophane were the weakest stimulants for P.brassicae , but were among the four best stimulants for P.rapae . In both species, eight amino acids were ineffective. Significant differences in stimulatory effectiveness were found between amino acids. Nutritionally essential amino acids were more effective in both species, as in five other lepidopterous species. Similarities with postulated sites for amino acid recognition in the dipteran Boettcherisca peregrina were found.
Concentration-response (C/R) relations were studied for five amino acids. Significant differences were found in saturated response levels. Parameters characterizing C/R relations were estimated using a logistic model. Comparing C/R parameters with phytochemical data on concentrations of free amino acids in a common host plant, Brassica oleracea L., shows that amino acids are effective stimuli at their natural concentrations. The amino acid chemoreceptor seems able to transmit information about concentration differences of amino acids in the plant tissue.  相似文献

Summary The fine structure of the so-called olfactory organ of Octopus vulgaris has been investigated. Electron microscopy shows the superficial layer of the epithelium to consist mainly of cells bearing microvilli. Below this, often very deeply, lie very many large cells, which bear numerous cilia. These cells open to the surface via narrow processes running between the epithelial cells. Although details of their innervation have yet to be established the large cells are assumed to be receptors and these findings are interpreted as evidence that this organ is indeed chemosensory. We would like to thank the staff of the Stazione Zoologica di Napoli for their help and excellent facilities; and the S.R.C. for financial support (a studentship to P.L.W. and grant B/SR/5287 to J.B.M.)  相似文献

We are interested in the effect of receptor clustering on k+, the diffusion-limited forward rate constant for the binding of a ligand to a cell surface receptor. Here we estimate the reduction in k+ when receptors are clustered in various configurations. We obtain two alternative expressions for the flux of ligands into receptors distributed on a surface. Next we show through a variational principle that these provide both upper and lower bounds on the flux when evaluated for trial concentration functions which satisfy only the boundary conditions of the Laplace equation. We use an analogy with electrostatics to calculate rigorous bounds within approx. 10% of the exact result for a variety of planar clusters of hemispherical receptor sites. We also obtain an exact result for the flux into a spheroidal receptor and use this result to obtain bounds on the flux into certain receptor clusters.  相似文献

Summary The aesthetascs of the spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, are hair sensilla located on the lateral filaments of the antennules. Each hair is about 0.8 mm long and innervated by about 320 bipolar sensory neurons, the dendrites of which project as a bundle into the hair shaft. Each of the dendrites develops two cilia. Within a very short distance each of these cilia branches repetitively and dichotomously resulting in 8000 to 10000 outer dendritic segments per hair, or about 20 to 30 branches per neuron. The branches intertwine frequently before running to the tip of the hair. Each hair also possesses inner and outer auxiliary cells. The inner auxiliary cells surround the bundle of dendrites, extending distally to the origin of the ciliary segments. Extensions of these cells project into the bundle of dendrites, separating groups of dendrites into discrete clusters. Outer auxiliary cells wrap the inner ones, but do not extend beyond the base of the hair.  相似文献

Physalia physalis, the Portuguese man of war, consumes mostly fish and fish larvae. Intracellular recordings from nematocyst‐containing cells (cnidocytes) in small pieces of Physalia tentacle were used to quantify the electrical responses to diluted and filtered fish skin mucus, 1–100 x 10‐6 M amino acids, monosaccharides, and nucleosides, and seawater, which were delivered upstream of the tissue. Seawater caused responses (one pulse only) in about 10% of the applications. Fish mucus extract elicited responses in all applications, producing 1–18 depolarizing pulses (20 mV maximum amplitude). The pulses were characteristic of post‐synaptic potentials (EPSPs). Lucifer yellow and biocytin dye injections showed that the cnidocytes were not electrically coupled. Simultaneous records from two cnidocytes following mucus applications were identical. We propose, therefore, that the chemoreceptors are not on the cnidocytes, but are probably on sensory neurons that innervate clusters of cnidocytes. A < 3,000 MW fraction of mucus elicited responses indistinguishable from whole mucus extract. Higher molecular weight fractions caused no response. The various test solutions had lower percentages of response (47–92%) and produced significantly fewer pulses than the mucus extract. We conclude that prey capture in Physalia is facilitated by chemicals present in the mucus covering their fish prey. The chemical stimuli probably sensitize the nematocysts to discharge upon mechanical stimulation.  相似文献

Evolutionary taxonomy has all but succumbed to cladistic methodology, but it continues to exert considerable influence in the realm of higher classification. Some systematists accept cladistic methods in phylogeny inference, but allow paraphyly in formal classifications. Most important, however, many traditional classifications based on paraphyletic groups (e.g. 'Reptilia') remain in force, deeply entrenched in the literature. Cladists have argued that such paraphyletic classifications can mislead comparative biologists into false evolutionary generalizations, but this assertion has rarely, if ever, been supported by example. This paper provides a case study, illustrating in detail the influence of a traditional paraphyletic classification of squamate reptiles on the historical development of ideas regarding the evolution of sensory modes (chemoreception vs. vision) in the group. The paraphyletic classification is shown to have led to false generalizations and incorrect conclusions stemming directly from the fact that the classification did not reflect accurately the phylogeny of Squamata, particularly the cladistic relationships of Gekkota. This study provides direct evidence that evolutionary generalization must be rooted in the branching pattern of phylogeny and not the potentially arbitrary categorical ranks of traditional taxonomies. It further supports recent calls for a truly phylogenctic taxonomy that has as its philosophical core the concept of descent.  相似文献

Trissolcus brochymenae (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) is an egg parasitoid that could be used to control stink bugs like Murgantia histrionica (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), a pest of brassicaceous crops. Before laying their eggs, parasitoid females spend considerable time examining the substrate with their antennae, which are also used during feeding and mating behaviours. This suggests that contact chemoreception plays a prominent role in many aspects of parasitoid ecology. Therefore, we examined the sensitivity of antennal taste sensilla chaetica to several classical tastants including those that are appetitive or aversive. In addition we studied the taste preferences of wasps when presented with these chemicals alone or mixed. The sensilla chaetica of T. brochymenae responded to serial concentrations of sucrose, salts, and quinine, but no concentration-dependent effect was observed when testing sinigrin, a secondary metabolite found in many brassicaceae. However, both sinigrin and quinine inhibited responses to 0.1 M sucrose when mixed with this sugar. Behavioural taste preference assays confirmed that wasps showed a dose dependent preference for sucrose over agarose. In addition, a behavioural avoidance of sucrose solutions containing quinine was observed. This effect was not observed when sinigrin was used as a feeding deterrent. In the two-choice tests the wasp did not discriminate between sucrose solutions mixed with salts and sucrose alone. Further no preference for salts or sinigrin compared to agarose alone was observed. This work represents the first step towards the identification of gustatory receptor neurons implicated in the detection of different types of chemical cues in egg parasitoids.  相似文献
