A recent study showed that a critically endangered migratory predator species, the Balearic shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus, rapidly expanded northwards in northeast Atlantic waters after the mid-1990s. As a significant positive correlation was found between the long-term changes in the abundance of this seabird and sea temperature around the British Isles, it was hypothesized that the link between the biogeographic shift and temperature occurred through the food web. Here, we test this conjecture and reveal concomitant changes in a regional index of sea temperature, plankton (total calanoid copepod), fish prey (anchovy and sardine) and the Balearic shearwater for the period 1980-2003. All three trophic levels exhibit a significant shift detected between 1994 and 1996. Our findings therefore support the assertion of both a direct and an indirect effect of climate change on the spatial distribution of post-breeding Balearic shearwater through a trophic cascade. 相似文献

Three new fossils of saprotrophic fungi are presented and described from Baltic amber, dated to Eocene epoch (Paleogene, upper to mid-Eocene). All belong to Ascomycota and are represented by hyphae as well as asexual reproduction structures allowing to assign them to present genera, respectively Periconia, Penicillium and Scopulariopsis. These material provide both the first and the oldest known fossil record of the mentioned taxa, making these data valuable for the knowledge about the evolutionary history of the Ascomycota. 相似文献

The acute administration of pentylenetetrazol (PTZ; 25-75 mg/kg i.p.) failed to modify the specific binding of t-[35S]butylbicyclophosphorothionate ([35S]TBPS) to membrane preparations from the cerebral cortex of the rat. In contrast, the repeated administration of PTZ (30 mg/kg i.p., three times a week for 12 weeks) reduced by 26% the density of [35S]TBPS binding sites without modifying the dissociation constant. This effect was observed 3 days after the last PTZ administration. A parallel reduction of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-stimulated 36Cl- uptake was measured in the cerebral cortex of PTZ-treated rats 3 days after the last injection. The repeated administration of PTZ produced sensitization to the drug, or chemical kindling. In fact, no convulsions were observed in the first week of treatment, but all the animals became sensitized to PTZ by the 12th week. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that chronic treatment with PTZ at a subconvulsant dose causes a decrease in GABA-coupled chloride channel activity that may be related to the chemical kindling produced by this compound. 相似文献

The human α-defensins (HNP) are synthesized in vivo as inactive prodefensins, and contain a conserved glycine, Gly(17), which is part of a β-bulge structure. It had previously been shown that the glycine main chain torsion angles are in a D-configuration, and that d-amino acids but not L-alanine could be substituted at that position to yield correctly folded peptides without the help of a prodomain. In this study, the glycine to L-alanine mutant defensin was synthesized in the form of a prodefensin using native chemical ligation. The ligation product folded correctly and yielded an active peptide upon CNBr cleavage. The L-Ala(17)-HNP1 crystal structure depicted a β-bulge identical to wild-type HNP1. However, dimerization was perturbed, causing one monomer to tilt with respect to the other in a dimerization model. Inhibitory activity against the anthrax lethal factor showed a 2-fold reduction relative to wild-type HNP1 as measured by the inhibitory concentration IC(50). Self-association was slightly reduced, as detected by surface plasmon resonance measurements. According to the results of the virtual colony count assay, the antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus exhibited a less than 2-fold reduction in virtual lethal dose values. Prodefensins with two other L-amino acid substitutions, Arg and Phe, at the same position did not fold, indicating that only small side chains are tolerable. These results further elucidate the factors governing the region of the β-bulge structure that includes Gly(17), illuminating why glycine is conserved in all mammalian α-defensins. 相似文献

In ungulates the process of chemical communication by urinary scent marking has been directly related to reproductive dominance, territorial defense and proximity to resources. The differences in the frequency of urine marking and chemical composition of urine of males Antelope cervicapra before, during and after the dominance hierarchy period were assessed. The variations in the urine marking and its chemical profiles of dominant males (n = 9), bachelors (n = 5) and sub-adult males (n = 5) were compared to find out how the dominance hierarchy influences the confined blackbuck herd under semi-natural captive conditions. The frequency of urine marking is significantly higher (p < 0.001) in dominant males. Twenty-eight major constituents were identified in the urine of dominant males (before, during and after the dominance hierarchy period), bachelor and sub-adult males. Among these, three specific compounds namely, 3-hexanone (I), 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (II) and 4-methyl-3-heptanone (III) were seen only in dominant males urine during the dominance hierarchy period. Based on the behavioural observation and the unique chemical constituents in the urine, it is concluded that the dominant male scent odor suppresses aggression, scent marking, scent production and territorial patrolling activities of subordinate males, through which the dominant male establish their hierarchy and attains success in reproduction. 相似文献

The technology described here allows the chemical synthesis of vaccines requiring correctly folded epitopes and that contain difficult or long peptide sequences. The final self-adjuvanting product promotes strong humoral and/or cell-mediated immunity. A module containing common components of the vaccine (T helper cell epitope and the adjuvanting lipid moiety S-[2,3-bis(palmitoyloxy)propyl]cysteine) was assembled to enable a plug and play approach to vaccine assembly. The inclusion within the module of a chemical group with chemical properties complementary and orthogonal to a chemical group present in the target epitope allowed chemoselective ligation of the two vaccine components. The heat-stable enterotoxin of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli that requires strict conformational integrity for biological activity and the reproductive hormone luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone were used as the target epitopes for the antibody vaccines. An epitope from the acid polymerase of influenza virus was used to assemble a CD8(+) T cell vaccine. Evaluation of each vaccine candidate in animals demonstrated the feasibility of the approach and that the type of immune response required, viz. antibody or cytotoxic T lymphocyte, dictates the nature of the chemical linkage between the module and target epitope. The use of a thioether bond between the module and target epitope had little or no adverse effect on antibody responses, whereas the use of a disulfide bond between the module and target epitope almost completely abrogated the antibody response. In this article results of several published studies are synthesized in order to address the neural system for the determination
of eye and head movement amplitudes of horizontal eye/head gaze shifts with arbitrary initial head and eye positions. Target
position, initial head position, and initial eye position span the space of physical parameters for a planned eye/head gaze
saccade. The principal result is that a functional mechanism for determining the amplitudes of the component eye and head
movements must use the entire space of variables. Moreover, it is shown that amplitudes cannot be determined additively by
summing contributions from single variables. Many earlier models calculate amplitudes as a function of one or two variables
and/or restrict consideration to best-fit linear formulae. Our analysis systematically eliminates such models as candidates
for a system that can generate appropriate movements for all possible initial conditions. The results of this study are stated
in terms of properties of the response system. Certain axiom sets for the intrinsic organization of the response system obey
these properties. We briefly provide one example of such an axiomatic model. The results presented in this article help to
characterize the actual neural system for the control of rapid eye/head gaze shifts by showing that, in order to account for
behavioral data, certain physical quantities must be represented in and used by the neural system. Our theoretical analysis

The effects of diabetes mellitus and circadian rhythm on pharmacokinetics or pharmacodynamics of drugs have been previously separately reviewed. In our previous study, a circadian rhythm has been described in the pharmacokinetics of MTX in streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus (SIDM) rats. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of circadian rhythm on the toxicity of MTX in SIDM rats. The hematologic parameters and serum folic acid levels were measured in control and SIDM groups before and after MTX administration to evaluate its toxicity. We observed that circadian rhythm in basal peripheral WBC counts disappeared after MTX administration in the first hour and were phase shifted on the fifth day. Circadian variations were not observed in the other blood cells. One hour after MTX administration, folic acid levels were high in both groups. However, a circadian rhythm was present only in the diabetic group. The alteration in the rhythm of WBC counts in diabetic rats may originate not only from the effect of MTX but also physiological alterations due to diabetes and/or the varying cell cycle entry rates in the hematopoetic stem cells. 相似文献

The 15N-HSQC spectra of low-spin cyano-met-myoglobin and high-spin fluoro-met-myoglobin were assigned and dipole-dipole-Curie-spin cross-correlated relaxation rates measured. These cross-correlation rates originating from the dipolar 1H-15N interaction and the dipolar interaction between the 1H and the Curie spin of the paramagnetic center contain long-range angular information about the orientation of the 1H-15N bond with respect to the iron-1H vector, with information measurable up to 11 Å from the metal for the low-spin complex, and between 10 to 25 Å for the high-spin complex. Comparison of the experimental data with predictions from crystal structure data showed that the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility tensor in low spin cyano-met-myoglobin significantly influences the cross-correlated dipole-dipole-Curie-spin relaxation rates. 相似文献
