The present work was performed to examine the existence of some relationships between macroscopic and microscopic traits of testis and epididymis in rabbit. The variables studied were live weight (LW), testis length (TL), testis width (TWh), testis weight (TW), testis volume (TV), epididymis length (EL), epididymis width (EWh), epididymis weight (EW), epididymis volume (EV), percentage of seminiferous tubules with presence of lumen (STL), percentage of seminiferous tubules with presence of elongated spermatids (STES), percentage of seminiferous tubules with presence of spermatozoa (STS) and diameter of seminiferous tubules (STD). Measurements began after weaning and continued until males reached 33 weeks of age.Phenotypic correlations between testis and epidydimis traits and the principal component analysis were estimated as the residual correlation from an analysis of variance, including the effects of line, birth-season, age, and the double interactions line × age and birth-season × age.Four principal components (PCs) explained 79% of the total variation. The predominant variables defining the first PC were TL, TW and TV. Epididymis width and STS were located in the second PC. Epididymis weight and EV were important in the definition of the first and third PC. Tubular diameter seems important in the definition of the fourth PC.It has been not found correlation between traits related to either testis or epididymis size and variables related to active spermatogenesis. Therefore, TW and/or TV seemed not to be good markers of maturity.  相似文献

Automated methods for protein structure determination by NMR have increasingly gained acceptance and are now widely used for the automated assignment of distance restraints and the calculation of three-dimensional structures. This review gives an overview of the techniques for automated protein structure analysis by NMR, including both NOE-based approaches and methods relying on other experimental data such as residual dipolar couplings and chemical shifts, and presents the FLYA algorithm for the fully automated NMR structure determination of proteins that is suitable to substitute all manual spectra analysis and thus overcomes a major efficiency limitation of the NMR method for protein structure determination.  相似文献

Animals in social groups need to differentiate between group members and others. In very large groups, such as those formed by many ant species, it is not possible to rely on individually specific cues to identify colonymates. Instead, recognition must be based on the colony-specific cues. Individual ant colonies tend to have a specific chemical gestalt that is maintained by the continual exchange of chemicals between workers. In very large polydomous colonies, the exchange of chemicals may be limited between nests within the colony, resulting in inter-nest variation in colony odour that might hinder identification of colonymates or conspecific intruders. We used near-infrared spectroscopy to explore variation in the chemical profile between and within colonies of the weaver ant Oecophylla smaragdina. We found that differences between colonies were reflected in the position, amplitude and width of spectral peaks, while differences between nests within colonies were reflected mainly in amplitude. Furthermore, in the context of colonymate recognition, the behaviour of the ants themselves was positively correlated with colony-specific spectral characteristics, rather than with nest-specific characteristics. Thus, colony spectra have features that are not obscured by intra-colonial variation and may potentially encode the chemical characteristics used by workers to identify colonymates.  相似文献

Seventy-seven immobilizations were carried out on adult male southern elephant seals at Stranger Point, Isla 25 de Mayo (King George Island) using a combination of Zoletil® (tiletamine and zolazepam) and ketamine in order to obtain biological samples. During 2006/2007, 22 males were immobilized at the beginning of their breeding period (EB), 19 of which were recaptured at the end of breeding (LB). Four were given only once at an unknown stage of breeding (USB) and 18 males were immobilized at the beginning of molting (BM). During 2007/2008, 14 adult males were immobilized at an USB. Zoletil® was administered using an automatic discharge device, whereas ketamine was injected directly with a syringe, and was used only when the initial sedation was not enough to carry out the programmed sampling. The initial mean dose of Zoletil® was 1,387 ± 304 mg, which represented 0.60 ± 0.14 mg/kg, range 0.36–1.05, n = 77. In 47 procedures, an average dose of 1.04 ± 0.66 mg/kg of ketamine was added. Mean immobilization time was 34 ± 14 min. In 25 out of the 77 procedures, males showed apnea, which lasted 8 ± 4 min (range 2–15 min). The necessary doses of Zoletil® and ketamine to attain immobilization differed between stages. For animals taken twice, doses (mg/kg) of Zoletil® and ketamine were significantly higher at the beginning than at the end of breeding. During molting, the doses of Zoletil® given were significantly lower than those used during breeding, although the proportion of animals that required ketamine during molting was significantly higher than during breeding. Zoletil® proved to be a safe immobilizing agent for field work on adult males of this species, given the wide range of doses used without any serious consequences. Furthermore, the addition of ketamine was useful when the initial sedation was not satisfactory or for prolonging the immobilization period in a practical and reliable way.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that waters surrounding reefs with healthy coral populations are more likely than degraded sites to induce planulae to navigate downward and begin benthic probing. In the laboratory, larvae from two brooding Caribbean coral species, Agaricia tenuifolia and Porites astreoides, were introduced to seawater collected at (1) 1 m above shallow, healthy reef with high-coral cover, (2) 1 m above shallow, degraded reef with high-macroalgal cover, and (3) ~400 m ocean-ward of the reef in deep, blue water. Counter to the hypothesis, water from both the healthy and degraded reef caused the larvae to swim downward and begin benthic probing. These results suggest that substances carried in reef waters may contribute to macro-scale habitat selection by planulae and that understanding how these waterborne cues mesh with other stimuli used by planulae to select a settlement site may be valuable for deciphering a site’s recruitment potential for corals.  相似文献

A problem often encountered in multidimensional NMR-spectroscopy is that an existing chemical shift list of a protein has to be used to assign an experimental spectrum but does not fit sufficiently well for a safe assignment. A similar problem occurs when temperature or pressure series of n-dimensional spectra are to be evaluated automatically. We have developed two different algorithms, AUREMOL-SHIFTOPT1 and AUREMOL-SHIFTOPT2 that fulfill this task. In the present contribution their performance is analyzed employing a set of simulated and experimental two-dimensional and three-dimensional spectra obtained from three different proteins. A new z-score based on atom and amino acid specific chemical shift distributions is introduced to weight the chemical shift contributions in different dimensions properly.  相似文献

An approach for the efficient implementation of RN n ν symmetry-based pulse schemes that are often employed for recoupling and decoupling of nuclear spin interactions in biological solid state NMR investigations is demonstrated at high magic-angle spinning frequencies. RF pulse sequences belonging to the RN n ν symmetry involve the repeated application of the pulse sandwich {R ϕ R −ϕ}, corresponding to a propagator U RF = exp(−i4ϕI z), where ϕ = πν/N and R is typically a pulse that rotates the nuclear spins through 180° about the x-axis. In this study, broadband, phase-modulated 180° pulses of constant amplitude were employed as the initial ‘R’ element and the phase-modulation profile of this ‘R’ element was numerically optimised for generating RN n ν symmetry-based pulse schemes with satisfactory magnetisation transfer characteristics. At representative MAS frequencies, RF pulse sequences were implemented for achieving 13C–13C double-quantum dipolar recoupling and through bond scalar coupling mediated chemical shift correlation and evaluated via numerical simulations and experimental measurements. The effect of chemical pretreatments using NaOH, H2O2, and Ca(OH)2 on Empty Palm Fruit Bunches (EPFB) to degrade EPFB lignin before pyrolyis was investigated. Spectrophotometer analysis proved consecutive addition of NaOH and H2O2 decomposed almost 100% of EPFB lignin compared to 44% for the Ca(OH)2, H2O2 system while NaOH and Ca(OH)2 used exclusively could not alter lignin much. Next, the pretreated EPFB was catalytically pyrolyzed. Experimental results indicated the phenolic yields over Al-MCM-41 and HZSM-5 catalysts were 90 wt% and 80 wt%, respectively compared to 67 wt% yield for the untreated sample under the same set of conditions. Meanwhile, the experiments with HY zeolite yielded 70 wt% phenols.  相似文献

This study compared the effects of different bedding depths on the chemical and microbiological characteristics of the bedding material used to raise pigs during growing and finishing. The experiment was conducted in two pens housing 5 pigs from 60 to 145 days of age, with rice husk beddings 0.50 or 0.25 m deep. Four lots of pigs (replicates) were raised over time in each bedding depth: each bedding was used by two consecutive lots. Bedding samples were collected quarterly to determine the most probable number (MPN) of thermophilic and mesophilic bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes. Contents of N, P, K, C, organic, mineral and dry matter, C:N ratio and pH were also determined. The MPN of thermophilic bacteria was higher for the 0.50 m than for the 0.25 m bedding (p < 0.05). The compost of 0.25 m deep bedding had a higher N, P and K content than that from the 0.50 m bedding (p < 0.05). Thus, the use of the 0.25 m deep bedding would be recommended due to its greater agronomical value in comparison with the deeper bedding.  相似文献

This study was aimed to evaluate the combined effects of quercetin and α-tocopherol on lipid metabolism and glycoprotein components in isoproterenol induced myocardial infarction in Wistar rats. Myocardial infarction in rats was induced by isoproterenol (100 mg/kg) at an interval of 24 h for 2 days. Quercetin (10 mg/kg) and α-tocopherol (10 mg/kg) were given to rats as pretreatment for 14 days orally using an intragastric tube. Quercetin and α-tocopherol significantly reduced the levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and free fatty acids in the serum and heart and serum phospholipids and significantly increased the levels of heart phospholipids in isoproterenol induced rats. They also significantly decreased the activity of plasma and liver 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme-A reductase and increased the activity of plasma and liver lecithin cholesterol acyl transferase in isoproterenol treated rats. In addition to this, they also significantly reduced the levels of hexose, hexosamine, fucose and sialic acid in the serum and heart of isoproterenol treated rats. Quercetin and α-tocopherol also showed significant decrease in plasma lipid peroxidation products (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and lipid hydroperoxides). Pretreatment with quercetin alone and α-tocopherol alone showed significant effect in all the biochemical parameters in myocardial infarcted rats. But, combined pretreatment with quercetin and α-tocopherol normalized all the above mentioned biochemical parameters in isoproterenol treated myocardial infarction in rats. Thus, the experiment clearly showed that quercetin and α-tocopherol prevented the accumulation of lipids and glycoprotein components in myocardial infarcted rats by their anti-lipid peroxidative effect. This study also showed that combined pretreatment was better than single pretreatment.  相似文献
