We investigated territorial behavior and circulating testosterone (T) levels in a multiple-brooded population of the European stonechat, a socially monogamous passerine bird with biparental care. Between arrival at and departure from the breeding territories, we (1) quantified behavior of both sexes in response to a simulated territorial intrusion (STI) of a male conspecific and (2) measured plasma T concentrations in males and females. Male response scores to a STI and male T concentrations varied with phase, but there was no temporal association between plasma T levels and the intensity of territorial behavior. During both two sexual and two parental phases, at least half of the tested males showed aggressive responses. About 20% of the tested males responded with courtship prior to laying of the first clutch, but none of the males courted during later phases. Age had a positive overall effect on male plasma T. Females also reacted to the STI of a male, but their responses did not vary with breeding phase. Female plasma T varied with phase, being elevated during production of the first but not of the second clutch. As with males, female responses to the STI were not correlated with T levels. Responses of pair partners were positively correlated with each other. We conclude that modulation of male territorial aggression with breeding phase is not regulated by changes of plasma T concentrations. In light of other studies showing reduced male aggression by pharmacological inhibition of cellular actions of T, we propose that T is permissive for male territorial aggression, but does not mediate short-term changes associated with breeding phase. The function of the high female plasma T concentrations during formation of first clutches could be related to the production of eggs with high concentrations of androgens.  相似文献

The androgen hormone testosterone (T) mediates vertebrate aggression in many contexts and according to the Challenge Hypothesis is up-regulated during social challenges. While originally applied to challenges experienced by breeding adults, we show for the first time that T is similarly up-regulated during deadly sibling aggression in young birds. When two nestling Nazca boobies hatch, one--usually the older chick--virtually always kills the other chick by pushing it from the nest. We compared concentrations of T, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA; a precursor of T), and corticosterone (Cort; a stress hormone) of chicks at various stages. T was elevated during fights in both chicks in two-chick broods, but not before and after fights, and not in chicks lacking a nest mate. DHEA was elevated 1 day after hatching and declined with age but appeared not to vary in concert with aggression. Cort did not vary across fighting and nonfighting periods. In conjunction with an earlier study [Tarlow, E.M., Wikelski, M., Anderson, D.J., 2001. Hormonal correlates of siblicide in Galapagos Nazca boobies. Horm. Behav. 40:14-20], these results indicate that T is temporarily up-regulated around the time of fights, as predicted by the Challenge Hypothesis. Our data suggest a general role for T during challenges at any time in life, not just during breeding.  相似文献

White shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone) held in 35 per thousand seawater were challenged with Vibrio alginolyticus at a dose of 3 x 10(5) colony-forming units (cfu) shrimp(-1), and then placed in water containing concentrations of Cu2+ at 0 (control), 1, 5, 10 and 20 mg l(-1). Mortality of shrimp in 5, 10 and 20 mg l(-1) Cu2+ was significantly higher than those in 1 mg l(-1) Cu2+ and the control solution after 24-96 h. In another experiment, L. vannamei which had been exposed to control, 1, 5, 10 and 20 mg l(-1) Cu2+ for 24, 48 and 96 h were examined for THC (total haemocyte count), phenoloxidase activity, respiratory burst (release of superoxide anion), phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency to V. alginolyticus. Copper concentrations at 1 mg l(-1) or greater for 24h resulted in decreased THC, phenoloxidase activity, phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency, whereas copper concentration at 20 mg l(-1) caused significant increase in respiratory burst of L. vannamei. In conclusion, concentration of Cu2+ at 1 mg l(-1) or greater increased the susceptibility of L. vannamei to V. alginolyticus infection by a depression in immune ability. The release of superoxide anion by L. vannamei exposed to 20 mg l(-1) Cu2+ was considered to be cytotoxic to the host.  相似文献

An important goal of protein design is to understand the forces that stabilize a particular fold in preference to alternative folds. Here, we describe an extension of earlier studies in which we successfully designed a stable, native-like helical protein that is 50% identical in sequence to a predominantly beta-sheet protein, the B1 domain of Streptococcal IgG-binding protein G. We report the characteristics of a series of variants of our original design that have even higher sequence identity to the B1 domain. Their properties illustrate the extent to which protein stability and conformation can be modulated through careful manipulation of key amino acid residues. Our results have implications for understanding conformational change phenomena of central biological importance and in probing the malleability of the sequence/structure relationship.  相似文献

The challenge hypothesis posits that male testosterone levels increase in the presence of fertile females to facilitate mating and increase further in the presence of male rivals to facilitate male–male competition. This hypothesis has been supported in a number of nonhuman animal species. We conducted an experiment to test the challenge hypothesis in men. Thirty-four men were randomly assigned to view high-competitive or low-competitive male rivals at high and low fertility within their partner's ovulatory cycle (confirmed by luteinizing hormone tests). Testosterone was measured upon arrival to the lab and before and after the manipulation. Based on the challenge hypothesis, we predicted that a) men's baseline testosterone would be higher at high relative to low fertility within their partner's cycle, and b) men's testosterone would be higher in response to high-competitive rivals, but not in response to low-competitive rivals, at high relative to low fertility within their partner's cycle. Contrary to the first prediction, men's baseline testosterone levels did not differ across high and low fertility. However, consistent with the second prediction, men exposed to high-competitive rivals showed significantly higher post-test testosterone levels at high relative to low fertility, controlling for pre-test testosterone levels. Men exposed to low-competitive rivals showed no such pattern (though the fertility by competition condition interaction fell short of statistical significance). This preliminary support for the challenge hypothesis in men builds on a growing empirical literature suggesting that men possess mating adaptations sensitive to fertility cues emitted by their female partners.  相似文献

The challenge hypothesis predicts that plasma testosterone (T) concentration is high when male-male competitions are high and decreases when males are engaged in paternal care. In monogamous species, T concentration increases at the beginning of the breeding period and decreases after egg laying. According to the challenge hypothesis, increasing competition should also lead to T increase. The aim of our study was to test this hypothesis. In a first experiment, we measured the T profile of domesticated canaries housed with their mate in separated cages without competition. In a second one, we created a competition by housing male and female domestic canaries together (in an aviary) and emphasized this competition by limiting food access. We also studied social status effect. Our results showed no effect of social status in both sexes and no differences in female's T concentration. Concerning males, we obtained a clear monogamous T profile from the ones housed in a low competition situation and a polygamous profile from the others housed in high competition situation. Thus, our results support the hypothesis of the plasticity of the mechanisms controlling T concentration according to environmental conditions.  相似文献

Keeping and breeding Dall's Sheep (Ovis dalli) in Leipzig Zoo between 1982 and 2009 are reflected and analysed. Seven animals were brought into the collection. 60 specimens were kept so far. The species hast turned out to be difficult in Middle-Europe‘s climate but nevertheless is manageable and reproductive. The rearing rate (animals have reached at least the age of 1 year) is 40%. Remarkable veterinarian treatments for keeping the stock healthy and especially for ensuring the breeding are described. For sure, deep engagement of keepers, veterinarians and curators is needed to keep this species successfully. Hopefully a lot of colleagues will take this as a challenge to increase numbers in Europe by joining the group of holders of this splendid wild sheep.  相似文献

Males of many vertebrate species are typically more prone to disease and infection than female conspecifics, and this sexual difference is partially influenced by the immunosuppressive properties of testosterone (T) in males. T-induced immunosuppression has traditionally been viewed as a pleiotropic handicap, rather than an adaptation. Recently, it has been hypothesized that suppression of sickness behavior, or the symptoms of infection, may have adaptive value if sickness interferes with the expression of T-mediated behaviors important for male reproductive success. We conduct a classic hormone replacement experiment to examine if T suppresses sickness behavior in a seasonally-breeding songbird, Gambel's white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii). Triggered experimentally by bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), sickness behavior includes decreased activity, anorexia, and weight loss. Gonadectomized (GDX) males that were treated with silastic implants filled with T exhibited suppression of behavioral and physiological responses to LPS compared to GDX and sham-GDX controls given empty implants. Sickness responses of control groups were statistically indistinguishable. T-implanted birds had significantly higher plasma T than control groups and levels were within the range associated with aggressive interactions during male-to-male contests. These findings imply that suppression of sickness behavior could occur when T is elevated to socially-modulated levels. Alternatively, it is possible that this suppressive effect is mediated through a stress-induced mechanism, as corticosterone levels were elevated in T-implanted subjects compared to controls. We propose that males wounded and infected during contests may gain a brief selective advantage by suppressing sickness responses that would otherwise impair competitive performance. The cost of immunosuppression would be manifested in males through an increased susceptibility to disease, which is presumably offset by capitalizing upon limited reproductive opportunities.  相似文献

Fungal species causing fruit rot of jackfruit have been isolated from seven different locations of Birbhum and Burdwan districts of West Bengal, India. Each isolate showed more or less similar microscopic characteristics. A representative strain VBAM1, isolated from a severely infected jackfruit was identified as Rhizopus stolonifer by 28S rDNA sequence homology. Increased reducing sugar content in pectin broth indicates pectinase production by the pathogen. The pathogen was not inhibited by ⩾500 μg/ml of Mancozeb and Bavistin. Copper oxychloride, Blytone 50% a.i. showed antifungal activity at comparatively lower concentration (200 μg/ml). Two rhizospheric bacterial strains, Burkholderia cenocepacia VBC7 and Pseudomonas poae VBK1, and three different strains of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis can produce significant zones of inhibition against the pathogen in dual culture overlay plates. They induced mycelia breakage of pathogen as evidenced from scanning electron micrographs. When applied to whole plants, the strains reduced or prevented disease and when applied postharvest to Rhizopus inoculated fruit delayed and/reduced disease incidence. These agents were also re-isolated from the applied surfaces and survived for long time when mixed with suitable carrier base indicating stability in a formulation over time.  相似文献
