Experimental studies can be useful tools to test plant responses to herbivory and to quantify the impact of potential biological control agents prior to their release. We evaluated the per-capita effect of Ceutorhynchus alliariae and C. roberti, two stem-boring weevils currently being investigated as potential biological control agents for garlic mustard, Alliaria petiolata, in North America. Weevils were released at three different densities in individual and mixed-species treatments onto potted plants of A. petiolata. Damage by C. roberti alone and by both weevils combined caused an increase in the numbers of inflorescences produced per plant. Although plants could compensate for low levels of damage, moderate to high levels of damage by both C. alliariae and C. roberti, individually and in combination, caused a decrease in plant height and a reduction in seed output per plant. The damage inflicted by both weevil species is similar so the overall impact of both species combined can be predicted by summing the impact of each species alone. Provided they are sufficiently host specific, both weevils could be released as biocontrol agents. Because reduced seed production is necessary to suppress A. petiolata populations, both species have the potential to contribute to control of A. petiolata in North America.  相似文献

We examined the influence of crop management (crop density, nitrogen fertilization level) and landscape parameters [areal proportion of oilseed rape (OSR), Brassica napus L. var. oleifera Metzg. (Brassicaceae), and proportions, lengths and distances of various non-crop habitats] on the parasitism of stem weevils (Ceutorhynchus spp.; Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and pollen beetles (Meligethes spp.; Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) by parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). Larvae of host insects were sampled in 29 winter OSR fields located in landscapes ranging from structurally simple to complex. Spatial scales of landscape effects were considered at eight radii (250–2,000 m) centered in the studied OSR fields. Stem weevil parasitism was unaffected by crop management variables but negatively related to roadside strip length at radius 250 m and grassy fallow area at a radius of 500 m. Pollen beetle parasitism was positively related to the crop density and to lengths of roadside strips and hedges within a radius of 250 m. Thousand kernel mass of OSR was positively related to pollen beetle parasitism but unrelated to stem weevil parasitism.

Ceutorhynchus assimilis has been selected as a potential biological control agent of Lepidium draba, which is a Eurasian invasive weed in North America. Preliminary studies indicated specificity of this weevil collected in southern France on L. draba. This result was in discord with the pest status of C. assimilis found in the literature. Host-specificity tests based both on field and laboratory experiments showed heterogeneity in the host spectrum of the weevils reared from different host-plants as determined by larval development. However, no distinguishable morphological differences could be visually detected between the populations feeding on different host-plants. All sampled populations of weevils were polyphagous as adults. Weevils reared from L. draba were specific to this plant for their complete larval development. Conversely, populations living on other wild and cultivated Brassicaceae species were not able to use L. draba as a host plant. Such differentiation is further highlighted by other biological aspects such as plant infestation rates, sex-ratio, duration of larval development, and differences in the timing of their life cycles. These results demonstrate that C. assimilis, an insect species formerly considered as a pest of Brassicaceae, is characterized by its host-range variability, with one population being potentially useful in the biological control of L. draba. Moreover, this example points to the need to test multiple populations of biological control agents in assessing risk.  相似文献

Abstract:  Cabbage seedpod weevil, Ceutorhynchus obstrictus (Marsham) (Col., Curculionidae), is an invasive alien pest that is spreading in North America. To aid with planning for introductions of European parasitoids in North America, we examined the status of the only classical biological control release against this pest in North America, which in 1949 introduced Mesopolobus morys , Stenomalina gracilis and Trichomalus perfectus (Hym., Pteromalidae). Weevils and parasitoids were reared in 2005 from mass collections of seedpods of Brassica napus , Brassica rapa and Raphanus raphanistrum (Brassicaceae) from 18 sites in the Fraser Valley, near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Of the three European parasitoid species that were originally released, only S. gracilis was found. The predominant hymenopterous parasitoid species were Trichomalus lucidus , S. gracilis , Mesopolobus moryoides (Pteromalidae), Necremnus tidius (Eulophidae) and Eupelmus vesicularis (Eupelmidae). These constituted over 97% of the parasitoids reared, although overall parasitism was low. Only M. moryoides is clearly North American in distribution; other than S. gracilis , the remaining species were either accidentally introduced or are Holarctic in distribution. Based on these results, re-releases of M. morys and T. perfectus in North America should be considered as part of a classical biological control programme. However, redistribution of S. gracilis is not recommended at present because of potential conflicts with biological control programmes against weeds. Ongoing re-examination of classical biological control programmes can further our understanding of failure of release programmes, particularly when re-examination can be made in the light of improved taxonomy and systematics of the target and agent species.  相似文献

The cabbage seed weevil, Ceutorhynchus assimilis Payk. [syn. Ceutorhynchus obstrictus (Marsham)] (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a crucifer-feeding insect, is a pest of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.). It is known to be attracted by isothiocyanates, crucifer-specific volatiles that are metabolites of the glucosinolates. The responses of this insect to other electrophysiologically-active volatiles from rape were tested in a linear track olfactometer. Attraction was demonstrated to nitriles (phenylacetonitrile, 4-pentenenitrile and 5-hexenenitrile), which are also glucosinolate metabolites, and to volatiles emitted by a wider spectrum of plant families ((Z)-3-hexen-1-ol and methyl salicylate). Combination of an isothiocyanate mixture with phenylacetonitrile increased attraction, but there was no such increase when the isothiocyanate mixture was combined with methyl salicylate. A mixture of 23 volatiles, emulating an attractive air-entrainment extract of oilseed rape, was not significantly attractive, although a high proportion of weevils (60%) turned towards it. The potential of these volatiles for inclusion into an isothiocyanate-based monitoring system is discussed.  相似文献

Cabbage seedpod weevil, Ceutorhynchus obstrictus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is an invasive alien species that impacts seed production of canola, Brassica napus and B. rapa (Brassicaceae), one of Canada’s major agricultural crops. To determine the need for and potential impact of introduction of one or more natural enemies for biological control it is essential to understand the mortality factors associated with C. obstrictus both in the native range and in the introduced range. Life tables were constructed for Ontario and British Columbia populations to determine the mortality factors affecting C. obstrictus. These were compared with life tables generated in Switzerland, the area of origin of the weevil. Results indicated that introduction of an exotic specialist parasitoid into canola growing regions of Canada would substantially reduce C. obstrictus populations. This study is the first to compare life tables of an invasive pest in the areas of origin and introduction.  相似文献

Ceutorhynchus portulacae (Coleoptera Curculionidae) is identified as a potential natural enemy of Portulaca oleracea, which is a serious crop weed in many countries of the world. Detailed biological studies on its life cycle, fecundity, longevity and mortality factors revealed that the weevil possess positive attributes of successful biological control agents like short life cycle, prolonged longevity, high fecundity, small size, high rate of increase, phenology of attack, multivoltinism and versatile feeding behaviour. Based on the present study, it could be concluded that C. portulacae could contribute considerably to reduce purslane weed in crop fields.  相似文献

Polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP) assays were developed to rapidly and cost-effectively differentiate the morphologically indistinguishable larval stages of three species, Ceutorhynchus alliariae, C. roberti and C. scrobicollis, proposed for the biological control of Alliaria petiolata. A PCR–RFLP using TaqαI restriction enzyme can differentiate the three target species only, while a PCR–RFLP double digestion using the restriction enzymes AluI and TaqαI should enable, based on virtual digestion, distinguishing them from 12 other Ceutorhynchus species associated with A. petiolata.  相似文献

1 The spatio‐temporal distributions of predatory carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) and their potential prey, the larvae of three coleopterous pests, Meligethes aeneus (Fabricius) and Ceutorhynchus spp. [Ceutorhynchus pallidactylus (Marsham), the cabbage stem weevil, and Ceutorhynchus assimilis (Paykull), the cabbage seed weevil], were studied within a crop of winter oilseed rape. The distributions of Collembola were recorded as potential alternative prey. Insect distributions were analysed and compared using Spatial Analysis by Distance Indices. 2 Mature larvae of the pests dropped from the crop canopy to the soil for pupation in temporal succession from May to early July. Their distributions within the crop were irregular and differed with species. 3 Adults of seven species or genera of carabid were abundant and active within the crop during May and June: Nebria brevicollis (Fabricius), Anchomenus dorsalis (Pontoppidan), Loricera pilicornis (Fabricius), Amara similata (Gyllenhal), Asaphidion spp., Pterostichus madidus (Fabricius) and Pterostichus melanarius (Illiger). 4 During May, N. brevicollis was spatially associated with peak numbers of M. aeneus larvae and with Collembola. Anchomenus dorsalis was spatially associated with Ceutorhynchus spp. larvae during two peaks in the abundance of the latter in early and late June. Nebria brevicollis and A. dorsalis coincided in both time and space with larvae of the three coleopterous pests when they were most vulnerable to predation by epigeal predators and are therefore good candidates for conservation biocontrol. 5 The importance of carabid beeetles in the natural enemy complex in winter oilseed rape and their potential for biocontrol of spring and summer pests are discussed in relation to husbandry practices for the crop and its adjacent areas which could be manipulated to promote carabid survival for integrated pest management.  相似文献
