In the subalpine mixed forest of Mt. Ôdaigahara, mid-western Japan, the understory is dominated by dwarf bamboo (Sasa nipponica), which is the major forage of overly populous sika deer (Cervus nippon). In the present study, we monitored the survival and growth of Abies homolepis seedlings over 5years to determine how they responded to the experimental removal of dwarf bamboo and to the exclusion of sika deer and mice (Apodemus argenteus and A.speciosus). Deer and dwarf bamboo reduced the survival of seedlings but had different effects on growth. The stems of seedlings were shorter in the presence of deer, indicating that taller seedlings were apt to be browsed by deer, whereas the diameters of seedlings were smaller in the presence of dwarf bamboo, mainly owing to its shading effect. The presence of mice decreased the number of seedlings germinating in a particular site, but had no effect on seedling survival after germination. There was no significant indirect effect whereby the survival of seedlings was predicted to be facilitated by the decreased biomass of bamboo because of grazing by deer. We supposed that this might be because the direct negative effect of deer was so large as to conceal the positive indirect effect.  相似文献

A case of pedicle and antler abnormality in a 12–14 year old sika stag shot in January 2003 in Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) is presented. The abnormality combines fusion of pedicles and antler bases with subsequent double-head formation. Double-heads result from growth of new antler bone without casting of the previous hard antlers. In consequence, two consecutively formed antlers are present in an individual. The stags skull showed a plate-like osseous structure whose broad and slightly elevated central portion was identified as the fused pedicles. The peripheral parts of this osseous plate constituted the second antler growth of the (former) double-head. A cast pair of antlers, which were fused at their bases, had been found in a neighbouring hunting district in the summer of 2002. The close fit between the casting surface of the fused antlers and the surface of the pedicle/antler structure on the stags skull indicated that the antlers had been grown by this stag and were belatedly cast from his fused pedicles. The fused antlers thus constituted the first antler growth of the double-head. We suppose that the broad connection between the fused antlers and the fused pedicles prevented antler casting at the normal time and thereby caused the double-head condition. The presentation of this antler abnormality is taken as an occasion to discuss the significance of pedicles for the normal casting and regeneration of antlers.  相似文献

The population density of Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon yakushimae Kuroda and Okada) in an evergreen broad-leaved forest in Yakushima, southern Japan, was surveyed over 4years from 1998 to 2001. Two approximately 50ha study sites, Hanyama and Kawahara, were established with a total of 4km of census trails at each site. The estimated densities of sika deer at the two sites were 43–70 deerkm–2 at Hanyama and 63–78 deerkm–2 at Kawahara, although these values might be underestimates. The adult sex ratio (number of adult males:number of adult females) ranged from 0.6 to 1.0 at Hanyama, and from 0.4 to 0.9 at Kawahara. Mean group size was 1.9 deer (male group, 1.5 deer; female group, 1.6 deer; mixed group, 3.6 deer). The population density of sika deer was relatively high compared to other sites in Japan, with the exception of very small (<10km2) islands. Possible explanations for this naturally high density of sika deer in an evergreen broad-leaved forest in Yakushima are discussed.  相似文献

In the Burwash area of north-central Ontario, Canada, expansion of the Trans-Canada highway from 2 to 4 lanes was accompanied by installation of a range of wildlife collision-mitigation infrastructure (e.g., exclusion fencing, underpasses). To assess the overall effectiveness of these measures, we monitored the spatial distribution and mortality rates of elk (Cervus canadensis) prior to and following highway expansion, distinguished by season (winter, snowfree) and corridor-type (highway, railway). We measured herd-level risk by the proportion of positions falling within 200-m railway and highway buffer zones using Bayesian methods. Spatial analysis confirmed that there was a distinct northward shift in the winter distribution of elk following construction, situating the elk past the north end of the exclusion fence. This increased the herd's exposure to highway traffic by 3.6 times (proportion of points before = 0.0041 ± 0.002 [SE], after = 0.0147 ± 0.003, P = 0.005), and resulted in a more than 2-fold increase in elk road mortality from 0.6 elk/yr/20 km during 8 years prior to implementation to 1.5 elk/yr/20 km during 8 years after implementation. Exposure to railways remained unchanged and consistently higher than highway exposure regardless of season (e.g., post-mitigation, winter proportion of points = 0.0453 ± 0.005), matched by consistently high mortality counts (proportion of points before = 6.4 elk/yr/20 km, after = 6.6 elk/yr/20 km). Our results demonstrate that while wildlife-vehicle collision mitigation is generally beneficial to wildlife and humans, failure to account for the local characteristics of wildlife populations can lead to suboptimal mitigation designs that reduce their effectiveness and lead to unintended wildlife impacts.  相似文献

  1. There is growing evidence that prey perceive the risk of predation and alter their behavior in response, resulting in changes in spatial distribution and potential fitness consequences. Previous approaches to mapping predation risk across a landscape quantify predator space use to estimate potential predator‐prey encounters, yet this approach does not account for successful predator attack resulting in prey mortality. An exception is a prey kill site that reflects an encounter resulting in mortality, but obtaining information on kill sites is expensive and requires time to accumulate adequate sample sizes.
  2. We illustrate an alternative approach using predator scat locations and their contents to quantify spatial predation risk for elk (Cervus canadensis) from multiple predators in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada. We surveyed over 1300 km to detect scats of bears (Ursus arctos/U. americanus), cougars (Puma concolor), coyotes (Canis latrans), and wolves (C. lupus). To derive spatial predation risk, we combined predictions of scat‐based resource selection functions (RSFs) weighted by predator abundance with predictions that a predator‐specific scat in a location contained elk. We evaluated the scat‐based predictions of predation risk by correlating them to predictions based on elk kill sites. We also compared scat‐based predation risk on summer ranges of elk following three migratory tactics for consistency with telemetry‐based metrics of predation risk and cause‐specific mortality of elk.
  3. We found a strong correlation between the scat‐based approach presented here and predation risk predicted by kill sites and (r = .98, p < .001). Elk migrating east of the Ya Ha Tinda winter range were exposed to the highest predation risk from cougars, resident elk summering on the Ya Ha Tinda winter range were exposed to the highest predation risk from wolves and coyotes, and elk migrating west to summer in Banff National Park were exposed to highest risk of encountering bears, but it was less likely to find elk in bear scats than in other areas. These patterns were consistent with previous estimates of spatial risk based on telemetry of collared predators and recent cause‐specific mortality patterns in elk.
  4. A scat‐based approach can provide a cost‐efficient alternative to kill sites of quantifying broad‐scale, spatial patterns in risk of predation for prey particularly in multiple predator species systems.
